Iv been thinking on this, and the question of how to get close to a smaller, faster dragon with a flying city… if your above them they can see you, everything and everyone can see you. so using the clouds/smoke and coming up to attack is possibly the only way to close the distance?
I was caught off guard because logic would say she is too large to sneak over behind a small castle & Rhaenys not notice. But they keep playing musical chairs with episode directors 🤷♀️
@@Disco__YTThey explain that in the books and it os cannon im the series. Meleys is fast but fierce). She would scape the jaws and fire of vaghar because vaghar is huge and slow.
And Rhaenys fastening herself on the sattle is also foreshadowing how Daemon will fight her, as he has flown with Vhagar often and probably knows this tactic very well.
I can read that some people say it doesn't make sense that Rhaenys went back twice after having the opportunity to fly away. The thing is no matter what would make the most strategic sense in those moments doesn't matter. In season 1, she could have ended the war before it started back at Aegon II's coronation. She didn't and Luke died after that because of Vhagar/Aemond. In this episode, she had the opportunity to end the war again and this time she didn't hold back. She died, yes. But Meleys had the advantage on Vhagar, and that gave her even more reason to die trying. And again, Vhagar killed her grandson. So of course it makes sense that she didn't flee the battle.
@@ZaferGazoz-1996Not biologically, but she and Corlys treated him/them like that. Laenor brought them up as his own kids until he left. Meleys didn't do too bad either she badly injured Sunfyre and managed to take Vhagar out of the sky with no injury's to herself or Rhaenys but Vhagar sneaked up on her and got the advantage.
@@wickedwitchoftheeast88 Wrong. Meleys got away but with new holes in her wings and a a mangled leg. She was also flying very slow and not high enough, that’s the only reason Vhagar was able to get her.

@@NtoTheMshe wasn't a pet read the books Meleys was a war dragon not as experienced as Vhagar but a fighter none the less. Meleys and Rhaenys were tactful it was thought out... until the end where you knowing staying out of blindspots didn't end well. Also if Meleys had of surprised attacked Vhagar from above instead of Rhaenys being noble and taking Daemon the outcome would of been so different.
At 1:52 you can tell that her leg is broken just by the way her leg is hanging I think that when vhagar grabbed her the sheer force of the pull may have injured her leg
Only thing is it was meles herself who grabbed vhagars toe and held on. Its why she was able to fly off before hitting the ground because she was in control. It's possible she pulled some muscles or ligaments during the struggle tho
She has complete control over Meleys, unlike the other dragonriders where the dragons are sometimes corrected or push their own will. You can see that this is a real bond and that Meleys trusts Rhaenys. 🖤
Daemon’s bond with Caraxes is even greater. He never needs to tell the Blood Wyrm what to do. Caraxes knows and does it willingly because he’s just as nuts as Daemon.
Love the scene, but it irks me that Vhagar not only managed to hide, but also close the distance that fast without Rhaenys knowing. Top it off by the fact that she flew incredibly close to the only possible thing that could be concealing Vhagar. Maybe a small nitpick, but it makes rewatches a bit less satisfying. I’d have preferred Meleys going back to grab at Vhagar again and Vhagar just managing to close around her neck.
Yeah it doesnt make sense at all, vhagar went to the ground while rhaenys was still in the air, like what was she looking at when not at the only thing threatening her, how can you lose sight of the dragon when it needs to take off on a huge open space
@@jorgbrunner6530 Exactly. It makes absolutely no sense at all. Very poor writing. Not only did it not comport to logic when considering the basic fundamentals of battle, they had already recycled this idea in the previous season, making it uneventful. Though Rhaeynes was far more experienced than Aemond in battle, to not flagrantly lose sight of an explicitly conspicuous opponent, regardless of experience, an enormous opponent like vhagar simply doesn't have the privilege of sneak attacks on their side - unless their hiding in the clouds with the benefit of night on their side like last season - as their sheer size disqualifies them from that benefit. There's no way a slow, old, enormous dragon can discreetly yet rapidly advance on a smaller opponent without their knowledge. Makes no complete sense.

Rhaenys should have pressed the attack once they had Vhagar on the ground. Letting up, and furthermore taking her eyes off Vhagar were such colossally stupid decisions that it almost breaks character. She had a chance to end the biggest asset the enemy had then and there.
On the ground, Meleys loses all of her advantage in agility and speed and can’t maneuver. Getting into a wrestling match with the strongest dragon in the world means death.
The thing is she could run. Not once but even twice. She knew her chances of winning were close to zero, but she was a warrior, a fearless dragon rider, loyal to her queen and she would have made a great queen herself if fate had not been so cruel. Rip the Queen who never was
It's well known that numbers often prevail over power. With five dragons on Rhaenyra's side, along with the other dragons from Dragonstone, she would easily defeat the Greens, who only have two dragons. If Rhaenyra launched a severe attack plan using all her dragons simultaneously, she would win easily in couple of days.
Most dragons on the black side would not be able to fight Vhagar even together. Only a few would be able to threaten Aemond. If Rhaenyra did this, she would probably lose too much. This is simply not a wise move.
@@Kubu1917 Vhagar is double size of caraxes, so if we got the scenario of vahgar vs caraxes, meleys and syrax, the three will be larger than him, deamon, Rhaenyra and Rhaenys all have more experience in dragon riding than aemond. Rhaenyra and Syrax did practically nothing during the war and are not even half as good at fighting as Aemond with his dragon. It would make more sense to send only Daemon and Rhaenys against Aemond, but then Rhaenyra would be left with weakened protection (and I remind you that the main goal of the blacks is to put Rhaenyra on the throne). The Blacks also have Vermithor, and he would be much better against Vhagar, but without a rider, it makes no sense to send him against Vhagar. Only Daemon is capable of threatening Aemond in any way.

i also think that she was ready to die fighting that day. Thats why she came back to fight Vhagar and ended up being killed by a ridiculously surprise attack from a very big dragon.
This is a beautiful scene and will be remembered. There is a dreamlike quality to it, the men on the ground are like the dreamer unable to affect the spectacular that is taking place above them only to witness it in horror and awe. Their fate is being decided outside their control.
funny you compare to a T-rex, because that animal was likely a very stealthy predator as well, with elephant like padding on its feet to prevent making any noise while hunting, elephants are also very stealthy animals and big tuskers can traverse the bush without making a single sound and are surprisingly good at hiding themselves
Vhagar is THE ONLY dragon that is fully functional for The Greens. She has to be ruthless because The Greens are sooo overpowered & outnumbered by The Blacks who have Meleys, Caraxes and Syrax.
As a book reader, I was both sad and amused to see just how many fans that have only watched the show say Rhaenys became their favorite character in recent weeks. @@gin.gefilms How can you label as awesome the killing of such an awesome dragon and rider? Nothing awesome in that. Talking about filming direction and emotions, yes, but I'm the lore, no it's the worst. In the books it's better. The three dragons fell to the floor together, no sneaking attacks from the big fat lizard
Rhaenys' only mistake is not attacking immediately after Vhagar hit the ground and Aemond was exposed on her back. Taking to the sky and circling back is the error, not choosing to attack at all. (Her character is a brave, honor-culture warrior, after all.)
It’s more a mistake on the writing front imo, she only made that mistake because the plot demanded that Rhaenys die there. In the books Rhaenys has to fight Sunfyre and Vhagar at the same time which makes her death more believable
Rhaenyra's suspicion (attacking the Rooks Rest by Greens made no sense) was right. The Greens wanted to lure (any) dragons of team Black. They (Aemond/Cole) thought, that the only way to kill black´s dragon/dragons was to use Vhagar. Of course it is dumb and non-tactical thinking (for example: it would have been enough if Caraxes had also arrived). So, Rhaenyra should have sent only spies (and use them much more frequently too) to Rooks Rest and then attacked and ocuppy the low guarded Kings Landing. Until then, Kings Landing was guarded by Vhagar and other smaller dragons.
Bro what do you know anything about war? If the greens capture Rook's Rest(which they did) would cut off the Black's ability to acess the mainland, therefore making them unable supply their allies in the Crownlands, and have no fortress to hold an army. Remember Dragonstone is an island. The Greens knew that losing Rook's Rest would disable the Black's to get to the mainland, which they would have to send a dragon to defend the castle, in response Vhagar was sent to secure victory.
@@majestic8054So why wouldn’t Daemon just have flown on Caraxes to Rook’s Rest from Harrenhal which is incredibly close? Aegon and Aemond would have both been killed essentially ending the war, if the Blacks were given any sense they would have sent another to protect Rhaenys from being doubled out like this
Interesting...on rewatch, it looks like Rhaenys had the upper hand for most of the encounter. If only she had simply finished them when they were knocked onto the ground...
No it wasn’t lol, Rhaenys on Meleys in the books fights Sunfyre and Vhagar simultaneously and still brings Sunfyre down. In the show, Vhagar just one-shots her out of nowhere and she doesn’t even get to fight back.
0:25 When Meleys came back from side of castle and sea for fight i think Aemond noticed that place is good to sudden attack for vhagar (sorry that my bad eng)
Am I the only one confused on how Vhagar was able to get the jump on the Dragon with the most agility? Also doesn’t Meley’s have horns and hardened scales protecting her neck? The kill didn’t seem realistic, at least in the books Vhagar slammed down on both of them using her size which made sense.1 on 1 meleys should be flying circles around Vhagar. I mean cmon Vhagar just woke up from a nap lol
Now that Aemond has used the ambush from below tactic twice, it would be really dope for him to try that on Daemon and Caraxes and it totally fail and Caraxes make Vhagar pay for it.
Quite likely and that wasn’t a sneak attack. They were in a dogfight, rhaenys made the rookie error of losing sight of her bandit and showed bad awareness of her surroundings. Aemond was simply a better pilot and daemon likely trumps him with experience.

Not like she could parachute out of there lol... She just accepted she is dead dont make it over dramatic
@@ausar3852 she could’ve attempted to move her falling position, put Meylys below her to absorb the impact, try to yes unhook herself and land in the trees. Fighting it doesn’t mean beating it.
Soon as I saw the castle looming, all i thought was "Yep. Aemond about to pull the Lucerys Tactic again.."
And he did...again.
Iv been thinking on this, and the question of how to get close to a smaller, faster dragon with a flying city… if your above them they can see you, everything and everyone can see you. so using the clouds/smoke and coming up to attack is possibly the only way to close the distance?
@@Disco__YT its a sound strategy for sure. Power house war dragon like Vhagar can't rely on aerial attacks cause he'll be seen a literal mile away.
He was not her grandson.
@@ZaferGazoz-1996Not biologically, but she and Corlys treated him/them like that. Laenor brought them up as his own kids until he left. Never underestimate an old veteran war dragon, Meley maybe the fastest targeryan dragon but she doesn't have much experience in war unlike Vhagar who already use to it she has advantage not because of her size but her experience, i dunno why everyone is telling vhagar cheated using stealthy attack, bruh it's part of her nature she is a killing machine a predator.
She's a handfed pet that's been used on open fields to burn ground troops.
She has zero experience hunting, let alone other dragons. The show ridiculed Meleys with the decision to change the fight.
@@NtoTheMshe wasn't a pet read the books Meleys was a war dragon not as experienced as Vhagar but a fighter none the less. The show did Meleys justice in that it actually showed what the book mentioned but never happened... one on one Meleys stood a chance of taking on Vhagar.
Yeah it or died for it.
@@jorgbrunner6530EXACTLY
Not nitpicking at all. You’re absolutely right.
Couldn't make girlboss Rhaenys just lose outright, so had to make it a sneak attack.
For such a big dragon Vhagar is a sneaky scamp
Experience.
People don’t understand Aerial combat. This was a dogfight and they had already engaged. It’s no so much he was sneaky, Rhaenys made the rookie error of losing sight of her bandit and showed bad awareness of her surroundings. yeah honestly the best shot yet. the soldiers stopping their attack because of what they are witnessing, and the beautiful fight between the dragons is *chefs kiss*
@Adsper2000 What they mean is have Meleys fry Aemond while he's on the ground and distracted. Fly back around, dive bomb and fry him.
So intense. Beautifully shot. What a show.

Meleys is such a top-notch flyer. Time and time again, she displays the best low-altitude maneuvers of any of the dragons despite her size.
Aemond and Vhagar nearly have 0% chance to win over that trio, the three dragons is nearly the same size.
And king aegon ll dragon sunfyre is very very small, rhynera have another dragons that can finish him easily that's include moon dancer, vermax and arax.
Beside the 3 wild dragons on dragon stone that rhaenyra can find riders for them, with all of that rhaenyra can win 100%.
The Greens have 4 dragons though: Vhagar, Sunfyre, Dreamfyre and Tessarion. I'm really excited to see Daeron and Tessarion especially, great duo.

It's three dreamfyre cannot be included because helaena targaryen the mad dreamer is not a warrior and cannot fight with a dragon, and prince daeron lives in old town with his dragon even if we included him it will be 6 to rhynera and 3 to greens beside the wild dragons that rhynera can find riders for them.
@@youssefsaleh8480 Syrax and Rhaenyra would be useless against Aemond and Vhagar. Rhaenyra and Syrax did practically nothing during the war and are not even half as good at fighting as Aemond with his dragon. They would probably be a priority target for attack and would be killed in minutes.
The fact that Meleys didn’t crash on the ground and flew away so fast is crazy
Raneys went back because she wanted to prove her self she wanted to injure vhagar atleast so that it have the blacks more advantage to march on kings landing with the largest dragon hurt badly! Also u can tell she thinks she won’t survive it in parts and I don’t think she planned to survive the battle anyway she new what she was up against and there was the threat that vhagar could

i also think that she was ready to die fighting that day. Thats why she came back to fight Vhagar and ended up being killed by a ridiculously surprise attack from a very big dragon.
Vhagar is an old and massive fighter. She has developed hunting strategies to substitute its lack of agility. Old lions and wolves do the same.
This is a beautiful scene and will be remembered. There is a dreamlike quality to it, the men on the ground are like the dreamer unable to affect the spectacular that is taking place above them only to witness it in horror and awe. Their fate is being decided outside their control.
Vhagar is massive but has managed multiple sneak attacks. Makes her even more terrifying.
This scene is so impactful to me. I love Rhaenys’s character and had so much respect for her honor and grace.
Targyrians thought that they are so powerful with dragons but they became so proud of them and that led to their own destruction
One of the best scenes of any shows ever made
How on Earth does Vhagar, basically a T-Rex with wings, have the highest stealth level in the entire series? 😅
She has more combat experience than all the other dragons combined. As the saying goes, fear an old man in a profession where men die young.
Slow lumbering predators like that usually prefer sudden fatal ambushes like that to make up for their lack of agility, just look at hippos.
funny you compare to a T-rex, because that animal was likely a very stealthy predator as well, with elephant like padding on its feet to prevent making any noise while hunting, elephants are also very stealthy animals and big tuskers can traverse the bush without making a single sound and are surprisingly good at hiding themselves

Best scene of the season. Loved watching Aemond and Vhagar doing their thing
So the Blacks lost their biggest dragon. 😂😂😂
