Soft White Underbelly is my all time favorite UA-cam channel. I’ve shared it with my entire family, my friends, even my doctors. Mark Laita does work like no one else on UA-cam, and probably some of the most important work ever. The fact that UA-cam demonetizes his every move is disgusting. They exploit the creators, yet they won’t allow the actual creators to make money to continue good work and bring awareness to the human condition. That’s why I try to find my favorite creators on patreon or their own sites to support them. UA-cam hq epitomizes hypocrisy, yet we can’t let go of it because there’s so much content that is important. Justice is a foreign concept in this world.

In an odd way, I feel bad for Mark. You can tell it’s in his nature to explore others and to want to understand human beings all while wanting the best for them. But by interviewing a set of broken souls, it exposes you to human frailty that inadvertently consumes you. I’m sure he gets a lot of positive experiences, but the negative ones, you can’t tell me this doesn’t play with his spirit. Not sure where Mark is spiritually, but his negative encounters with broken people has the potential of having the cumulative effect of something destructive. I am hopeful that he will continue to do what he does with a strong armored resolve.

Some people have the metaphorical equivalent of rain coats as a spirit. Stuff just slides right off. Those are the kind of people that make the best therapists or pediatric ICU nurses. They can see terrible things and it doesn't haunt them. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those people. I'm more of a sponge. It all stays with me, in my head.

Dogsalway SbarkAtbetamales, I will agree with you. I sometimes think Mark is a bit naive and is sometimes taken advantage of. It surprises me as he's been doing this for a while now. He seems like a super sensitive person and that's a beautiful thing, but like you said, I wonder how it all affects him in the end?

I didn't understand people in worse situations and always believed it was their own fault, whether it was opinions I'd borrowed from my mother or otherwise. I picked up a blue collar job and moved to a low socio-economic area when I became an adult and my understanding of these people totally changed. I'm much more understanding of the situations people find themselves in, and much more sympathetic. It's still a case by case basis, there are some people out there who just think the world owes them something for nothing, but I've met some very genuine people in my neighbourhood that have a story of their own to share.

In 20 years of what is a very happy marriage, that had some rocky moments in the early years, we quickly learned that patient, clear communication, solves more than nagging, yelling, passive aggressive behavior. Luckily we always made a rule, of taking a few minutes, or hours, before talking, if we were angry, to cool down, and then talk about whatever, without the venom. It works! We rarely argue, and even when we have, its not toxic, and always ends in either understanding (from situations based in misunderstanding,) or some degree of compromise, where we are both good with the outcome. No one wins an actual fight, if you have to be mean to someone you love, who loves you too. But, to each their own! Although, there's a reason that we have outlast most of the relationships that our friends/family members have been in. I follow my calm down rule, on the rare occasions that I have conflicts with any loved ones. Because none of them have done anything to deserve how cruel I can be, in extreme anger! You can be forgiven, but you can't take words back!

I've learned soooo much from watching his channel. He brings a face and story to some of the most hurt and trauma filled people and makes them real. When you don't personally know someone who's a drug addict, gang member, prostitute, pimp, etc it's easy to condemn them for what they do and disassociate from thinking of them as being human, someone's mother, father, daughter, son, etc. His passion is helping others to learn to forgive others, have compassion for them and ultimately love them and wanting the best for them. Thank you Mark ❤️

Mark, I, like hundreds of thousands, if not millions of others are absolutely obsessed with SWU in a beautiful way. As soon as I open my eyes the first thing I do is look for a new video that hopefully was uploaded 2 hours earlier and then get my big dose of heavy reality to start my day. I struggle with anxiety and bipolar disorder yet my struggles and anxiety seem so shallow compared to the people who live and die daily on Skid Row and the Tenderloin.
I’ve always been a happy go lucky person most of my life but then I can be completely empathetic towards poor people and especially the homeless. When I was a little girl I was raised baptist and I wanted to grow up and be a missionary to go to Haiti or any other really poverty stricken country and help build homes for the homeless.
Today I’m 42, single mother and a happy atheist but I still have the heart inside that would love to find a way to help the poor. I love what you’re doing. I strongly dislike when people accuse you of exploiting the people you interview, I see that these people are almost desperate for someone to listen to their stories. I think the theme that I gather from your videos on how to have a happy life is to FORGIVE. Thanks for sharing your talent and their stories with the world!

In this interview Mark makes a lot of beautiful existential points regarding acting on our better instincts. In my own experience it is the difference between acting on our own sin nature and cooperating with God's grace. He remarks that he learned these lessons on forgiveness and generosity somewhere as a kid, but admits that he cannot recall when or where. I have learned very similar lessons regarding forgiveness, giving without expecting repayment and unconditional love, but for me the source has always been Jesus Christ. Thank you Mark for making the Gospel so tangible to present day. For me, the Gospel of Jesus is always timeless, relevant and poignant -- and it is nice to hear the tenants of Christ's teaching applied to what matters the most in our present age.

Mark's depth of empathy and compassion is something we should all strive for and he's right about forgiveness. My friend's mother was murdered when he was a teenager by a neighbor - random act. The murderer was caught and sentenced to life. My friend had the opportunity to have his mother's murderer murdered in jail. Years later he was told if he said the word, his mother's murderer would be killed. He said no. He had the opportunity to get revenge but chose not to in the end. I'm not sure I could but I have always had so much respect for him that he could attain that amount of forgiveness. Hate works both ways. I hope love does too

Mark really is living his life like a saint on this earth. Forgiveness and unconditional love. I know I need to learn these, like so many others. When I first began watching his channel, it was very painful to see the challenges and struggles of society’s most vulnerable people. Your vibe attracts your tribe and for whatever reason growing up and as an adult, I’ve always been a person who stands up for the underdog, who is compassionate. Mark is a role model because he doesn’t let his talents and skills go to waste. He does work that actually makes a difference. I do hope he is okay because transference is real. I’m hoping he has enough social and emotional and psychological support to keep him healthy through doing this work. He reminds me of my favorite poem called “Bird Understander” by Craig Arnold.
