Natalie Dormer is probably my favorite portrayal of Anne. She really did as much research she could get her hand's on to really feel the energy of the true Anne. As well Fun fact, the production team of the Tudor's wanted for Anne to be blonde (because dormer had blonde hair, but she said she wouldn't do the part unless she dyed her hair darker) because the true Anne is said to have had dark brown, raven black, to even a dark auburn. Which in some later scenes, she has reddish highlights shining through.

Natalie’s performance also benefits from the amount of time she had to develop Anne, as opposed to a 90-120 minute movie. She just IS Anne, all the way.

You remark on the show actually using recorded statements by Anne Boleyn. As far as I recall and this is what made Natalie Dormer's portrayal of Anne Boleyn even better in my eyes, was that she insisted that the downfall part respects the historical record. I think the showrunners wanted to do something a bit different, but she convinced them to respect history.

The second half of this season is like you said, incredibly hard and emotional to watch, but it has a really special place in my heart because it was the first I've seen of this show. I think episode 9 was the first one I watched, and though I didn't know a thing, I still felt the emotional impact. So it was in a way, my true introduction to Anne and The Tudors 🧡
"Henry VIII liked to listen to things that he wanted to hear" You couldn't have described him and the situation at his court more perfectly and accurately 👏🏼👏🏼
The scene at 9:45 was pure gold 😂👏🏼👌🏼
The scenes between the mothers & daughters were so incredibly moving 😢At the end of the one with Anne & Elizabeth when Elizabeth was gleefully looking for the "fishies" in the pond and Anne was crying and caressing her daughter's head because she clearly sensed the danger that was coming her, and therefore her child's, way. Then the sequence between Catherine & Mary and how it turned to be only a dream and how they never saw each other after their separation 😢And to think how this was all inflicted by the very person to whom they should've been able to look to for love and protection!
I so agree about the unnecessary scenes between Anne and the men who were accused of having slept with her. There was zero need for them and for having to come up with something that makes it look like Anne's maids actually believed the rumors. It actually takes away from the brutality and injustice of the real situation because all these women, Jane Parker included (The portrayal of her and George's relation, and the portrayal of his character in general, is just UGH!!), knew that for them, it was cooperate or suffer. Whatever they personally believed, they had no choice.
All the scenes related to Anne's downfall, from her begging Henry with Elizabeth in her arms to the execution of the five men (four in the show), to the constant delays and Anne's reaction to them, to the dream sequence on her last night, were so well done! And the beautiful soundtrack made them even more impactful 🥺The execution scene, some minor details aside, was just *chef's kiss*!! The final walk, the speech, the music, the way Anne carried herself, when Cranmer knelt and the others followed his lead, the human and realistic portrayal of Anne's fear in her final moments...It's honestly the best portrayal of Anne's death on film in my humble opinion. Natalie did a magnificent job! You could tell how she put all her passion and energy into making Anne come to life on screen and trying to do her life and story justice and it showed ❤❤
Thank you for this wonderful review. I'm really enjoying this series. You're always great at picking the scenes you want to highlight and I love your thoughtful and insightful comments. I can't wait for the future installments 💛💛
**P.S. Regarding GoT, if you don't mind my asking, have you only watched the show or have you read the books too? Who is your favourite character(s)? I've watched only S1-4 in full and a few clips of S5-8 but have read the first 5 books in the series and am currently nearing the end of my reread of them, so I got curious when you mentioned the Cersei quote 😂

I've been studying English history from Richard the Lionheart through Henry the Eighth for about 45 years (reading on my own, not via coursework) and had always had a negative perception of Ann. The history is written by the victors and all that clop. Your videos and obvious affection for her have altered my perception completely and am now viewing her as a woman in an impossible situation. I am now very sympathetic to her plight. Was she perfect? No, but she was not as manipulative as she is so often portrayed. This has also caused me to rethink my views of many of the other women who played such an important role in this part of history. Thank you for helping me to see these people as more dimensional than a book can portray.

Really loving these reviews! Anne’s downfall is a hard watch, especially the final episode where she has flashbacks of her childhood running around playing with her father and George and you can see a loving relationship between them there, it’s really heartbreaking.
It also completely contrasts with the Thomas Boleyn in the show that uses his daughter as a tool for power and at one point condemns her to save himself.

The injustice and the monstrosity of Henry VIII was so perfectly conveyed and portrayed. Henry would’ve begun a massive international incident, if not a war, with not just Spain but possibly the Holy Roman Empire and other Catholic nations. Although he thought that he was Heaven’s gift to the 16th century world he was savvy enough that to know that having the rest of Europe and the Pope against him and England wouldn’t work out well. However, Anne, Jane Seymour, Katherine Howard and Catherine Parr didn’t have the protection of royal blood. Who knows what would have happened to Jane if she’d lived after Edward’s birth or Catherine Parr if Henry had decided to take a seventh wife?

Great review I'm curious how you felt about the portrayal of the Boleyn family in this show? It seems to me that the Boleyn family especially George and Thomas Boleyn have been unfairly stereotyped as evil and ambitious people who did not care for their own daughter/sister but more recent research has shown us this was not the case. I want to get my hands on Lauren Mackay's book Among the Wolves of Court soon.

This tv series is what made me interested in the Tudor dynasty and this series to this day is my favorite 🖤 No matter how many times I rewatch this series Anne Boleyn’s fate always makes me cry. Anne is also my favorite of the 6 wives and recently started loving Katherine of Aragon after watching The Spanish Princess because we finally get some of her story rather than portraying her just as the first wife and skipping their story. Going back to talking about Anne I know your stance is that you didn’t like that the writers made her promiscuous because she was too smart but that is something she could have taken advantage of. She could have been smart about being promiscuous and not getting caught. But it is also Hollywood so that sells if they can fit it into the story. I want to believe her innocence and love that she got her last laugh with her daughter being Henry’s successful child but again none of us were there

The great Peter O’Toole as the pope was amazing. However, Brereton wasn’t a priest, nor did he try to kill Anne. James Frain does a wonderful job as well, though Cromwell wasn’t as thin or nice-looking as the actor. Also Cromwell was like 50 at this time. One must have some rather questionable ethics to think that a woman of Anne's social status in the Tudor period somehow deserved to be beheaded for - what would you accuse her of, 'bewitching' and marrying Henry, the poor helpless king who Brexited the Roman Catholic Church and made himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England just to have her?

  • @NolanHawkeyeAnthony

To this day Catholicism has a lot of power, whereas the Church of England, not so much. King Henry torched the monarchy so he could have some strange with Anne, what a disaster
