Ferrari Purosangue vs The Sahara | A V12 in the desert
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 тра 2024
- In 1995, CAR magazine drove a Ferrari 512M to the Sahara desert in what was one of the all-time greatest adventures. Now, nearly 30 years on, we’re retracing our steps in Ferrari’s new Purosangue. With a raised ride height and more than a whiff of SUV about it, this screaming four-door V12 should be the perfect accompaniment to an epic drive. CAR mag editor Ben Miller is your guide.
Chapters:
0:00 - Intro
3:01 - Motorway and first impressions
6:46 - Tech explainer and comparisons with the 512
9:56 - Driving a Purosangue in Marrakech
12:11 - Handling on the mountain roads
18:01 - Verdict
Don't forget to check out how the Ferrari Purosangue faired when we tested it in the snowy Alps and against the Aston Martin DBX707 & Bentley Bentayga!

What car would you take to The Sahara Desert? Comment below!
Purosangue is the one. GTC4 Lusso would be great too.

This is automotive journalism at its finest. Watching this video was truly an immersive experience. I love seeing Ferraris being driven and enjoyed like this on all kinds of roads and different environments. Taking a road trip in the amazing Purosangue to the Sahara desert, that's just absolutely fantastic. I'm so jealous.
Thank you very much 🙏🏻
WOW. You guys at CAR have knocked it out of the park again! 👏🏻 Awesome story, presenting and filming.
Thanks so much!
There’s a good video of Harry Metcalfe repeating this trip also.
I already take my F12 to the Sahara two times driving from Nice, so a Purosangue is not that extrange!! Great content!
Great video of an iconic journey. Ferrari for better or worse seems to be a brand that transcends the automotive world somehow, certainly the greatest engine manufacturer ever. I couldn’t help but think throughout that while the journey was worthwhile, things have changed so much (both country and car being obvious examples here) that this must feel more like a history lesson than a recreation of the test of toughness of journeyer and machine that the original trip was. We are so much more globalised than ever before. It’s time to move on with the world, and the V12 block in this car is a rather fitting demonstration of that - a graceful farewell from Ferrari before hybrid powertrains take over their fleet.
This is the best video I've seen on this channel. Excellent stuff!
I have been busy these weeks but having finally seen this film, it is amazing man, both the Purosangue and Car Magazine are some of the very best offerings at their jobs! ❤️❤️
Thank you!
Love this, remember reading the original story in '95 as a student, love the escapism of a Car road trip
Thanks very much! Be sure to check out the mag stories too - incredible photography.
This video reminds me why I feel in love with car magazines and cars
Wow this is the very best Car magazine video till date.
The editing , sound mixing and Ferrari V12 made an amazing one
Thank you!
The kind of stuff that dreams are made of! 🔥🔥🔥
I remember reading that original article and my jaw dropping… this is a fabulous tribute to the original read! 👏
I have this magazine somewhere. It was a mine blowing article
I also have this issue of this mag in my collection. I do take them out from time to time and browse through. Some interesting reads in there! The last one I re-read recently was the spyshots and predictions for the Rover 800 in the mid-80s. The artist's impressions were spot on!
Magnificent video. Nostalgic for Morocco, went there as an young engineer early in my career, Casablanca. Marvellous. ♡ Great job.
Wow! I remember buying the 512M magizine as a kid!!
VERY well done. You guys have broke the code in communicating in both print and video. Thank you!
That's really kind of you, thanks timdavis1877
Great video guys, excellent videography and presentation
Best video CAR has ever done. Beautifully narrated and shot. So evocative. Thank you.
Excellent reportage, video and photography. Enjoyed this one !
Awesome! Thank you!
This seems like a Ferrari for people who already own a Ferrari and want a daily driver Ferrari
I remember that original story. Some things just stick in your head.
Wonderful review and editing, thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Phenomenally Wonderful Video!!!
Imagine going to the Sahara and that's the max you can have with your car...lose a little traction in some rest area...
Beautiful piece of kit!
It's expensive plus it's basically a bigger GT type vehicle not an off-road type.
Wonderful Video. Thank you 🙏
Good presentation. You could have mentioned the Ferrari FF as well, since Montezemolo started this theme which now evolved to the Purosangue.
I love this soundtrack. I love Purosangue too, but the soundtrack is more accessible.
Well done!!!!!
Great camara work with great comments and what a example of a car.
Many thanks!
Back in 1995 I had a Ferrari 348ts and had this mag and read with interest the story.. strange to be reliving that sat on sofa and watching a high resolution video, having just come back from Marrakesh mountain trekking; lucky I still have a Ferrari in my garage 😄
wow, amazing scenery and good music. very nice viedeo
Thank you very much!
Awesome episode, thank you :o)
Thank you too!
This is the quintessential “stunning and brave” journo UA-cam vid. Hardly dipped its toe in the REAL gravel (and probably a full Ferrari crew out of the picture ready to replace a chrome nut) and still…it’s a remarkable feat of engineering…
I'm afraid to say you're incorrect on this one. 1 presenter, 1 videographer, 1 photographer for the mag, 1 social media content creator and a technician on standby if the car needed seeing to, that's it. We actually did those miles over a week and it really was a long journey from one end of Morocco to the other, not to mention the driving in Europe.
That was Delicious...!
- Gr8 work 👍
Thanks so much Boorock70
Great video!
Thank you ashleyreid7113
Did it overheat and shut down like it did for throttle house in the much cooler weather around maranello? or did they make sure to upgrade the cooling after finding out what you were doing with it.
CAR is the new EVO
Good describe and nice car
That's awesome
What a wonderful review, thanks ! (Can’t help asking myself how Lamborghini feel about this brilliant Purosangue which seems far more sophisticated than their Urus.)
Glad you liked it!
This is beautifully made and it's clearly a cracking car. I just don't get the amazement that it can do things cars a tenth of the price can also do
Ferrari 512 TR did it first in 1992 ! Maranello to Morocco.
My G Sam @Seen through glass in his 360
XM-red label!!!!! My new truck yeah!!!!
Back in the early 80s I worked in Saudi Arabia on the telecoms expansion project which meant I travelled over the entire Kingdom - in my Mazda 626🙄 Watching this video reminds me of the epic journeys I did including 'dune offroading' seeking out telecoms facilities using a map and a compass. So lucky to have grown up with physical experiences, rather than just watching someone elses virtual UA-cam experiences.... #goodolddays
12:12 😱 Scary.
1 min of a desert in the video, nice test!))
1 min of drive on a flat sand what an off roading bych
And do some mud offroad with cullinan vs gls maybach vs bentayga
Who else just watched TGT Sand Job?
It's definitely important to keep the center of density low on a car... don't want it to fly off into the atmosplane if it flips over... :)
Isn't Purosangue capable of offroading? I couldn't see any video related to it's offroad capability.
it's not the first 4-door ferrari, the Sultan of Brunei ordered both a few 456 sedans and a few 456 estates
Look at that engine bay…. I wonder how the engine cool off in a hot summer traffic
It took you a week of driving to get there, it also took me 18 minutes of a 22 minute video to get there too 😂
All about the journey, Wayne…
Would like to see the making of…
Bring it to Namibia - so we can give it a proper drive through - there is too much road in this video. You need more sand and gravel - it’s easy to get here and it will be a proper off-road drive
Driving a supercar to Sahara in 1996 was a big deal. Driving a SUV to Sahara in 2024 is quite a bit less impressive.
The only vehicle I love to drive over my little mustang
so pretty
compare it with another sport suv in mud offroad

Honestly one of the best car videos I've seen. Reminded me of prime Top Gear. The production, the camera work, the landscape the story just everthing was sensational! And that nice touch of allowing the kids to lean on the car was just *chef's kiss*
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you 🙏🏻
Try with algerien sahara
Guy drives 99% of the video on tar roads. 1% on a FLAT piece or sand driving in a circle.
No dune driving, no crossing the actual desert.
🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦
Mazda called , they want there CX-30 design PDF back
Looks like a Byd at best, no Ferrari genome
no gas station bro
Rebadged Mazda 3.
Design could and should have been better.
It looks more like a Mazda than a prancing horse
Not the first foor Doors Ferrari
its ok Mazda
3:34 ængel gød dominique Lil Young Peso Dinero💲 Lil Young Peso Dominique💲
Morocco does not have a desert at all
Lol realy go educate yourself then
Presenter has more screentime showing his face than the vehicle...found that annoying
Just realizing how ugly license plates are...
LOL "driving in the Sahara," IE doing a few circles in a flat plain. Could do that in just about anything.
Erm no. This is road driving, literally ever car can drive on a road.
Mazda CX30
⚠️ Engine overheated😂😂
a bit of a rubbish choice for the desert, don't you think?
Before I tell you about your new wife I'm going to reflect on your ex-wife for no apparent reason except you took her to the desert once. Oh and on the way we're going to walk down memory lane and rehash what made that ex-wife so great and yet so troublesome. Oh yeah,, I almost forgot, here's the new wife.
The Ferrari is a W12 not V12 , it’s literally a V6 hybrid engine from Toyotas catalogue that goes into the Mazda 6 body and is made by 5 different plants that are real car plants unlike the rest of Ferraris lineup they may or may not be real at time. This excludes the literal track that is designed just for the track and racing, it’s made in Kentucky peice by peice by General Motors and is under the same warranty as the rest of General Motors lineup who maintains the car on the track for the 300k cash price . Not not
Thanks for the laugh! 😂😂😂 Absolutely clueless comment!
Cool vehicle but don't look like a ferrari, and overpriced. Come back 348 all is forgiven 😂😂😂
IT IS A suv. I DONT CARE😂
This "car" is just stupid and overpriced.
Probably the ugliest Ferrari yet! A milestone.
Waste of an opinion!
Please don’t call this abomination a supercar
21:56 that guy in a Duster is going in wrong lane
what is this bullshit ??? you didn't drive the car in the dunes !!! 👎👎👎
