This is the game I always point to when people say "technical limitations" are the reasons there can't be open worlds in games today. I loved that you could run for literally an hour and never see a loading screen. I played this game with 2 PS2's "dual boxing" with a druid and a warrior using the avatar spell to solo a lot of things. What a great time it was.
I played this game for over 7 years and it's still my favorite game of all time. One thing not mentioned in the video is that the world was seamless and had no zoning. You could literally run from one end of the continent to the other end without a single load screen.
EQOA is the spark that lit my love for MMOs that hasn't ever died down. Been following the revival pretty happily and was psyched to see the multiplayer tests
This was my first MMO. I have so many fond memories. The game was work but that made the rewards only more special. Had such a great time raiding and the planes, guild drama and the loot. I so miss this game.
Best thing about this game was the seamless world. There were no "zones" so to speak, and you could just strike off in one direction and see where you ended up. The world geography made sense and the further North you were the more snow you had, and you had a great desert and swamps to the south.
No loading other than using the coaches to get across the map was great. I was very disappointed with FFXI when you went to a new zone and the game loaded. I remember a few times getting very lost in the world. Eventually they added what zone you were in somewhere in the menus so you wouldn't get so lost. But getting lost was sometimes the best thing as you'd see beautiful landscapes that otherwise you wouldn't see.
James Warner there was loading it was just smoother and seemingly faster if you ran rather than coaches. The coach caused a load screen to pop due to the massive change in location while running would give the PS2 time to prep for the next load in the background without the player realizing that this was taking place. It’s also probably the main reason that so many PS2 dvd drives died while playing this game until Sony addressed the issue in future model revisions. I went through about 4 PS2s that I had to send off to Sony for repair because of this game. It’s how I learned about company RMA processes. Lol.
Randomly I was sent a beta disc in the UK for this after signing my details up for the PS2 Ethernet port. we loved it so much we bought the full game when it was ready. The server for Europe / Australia was called Stonewatchers and that was shutdown early like you said. What we did was bought the Frontiers disc which has the base game + expansion in one disc and we also had to buy NTSC American PS2's and get them shipped over where we were able to play until the day the game died. 😢 So happy you've covered this game on your channel 😉
I miss playing this soo much. To think of all of the time I spent on the game lol. I wish they would update the graphics even more and bring it back. I would so love to play this game. There are no games like this for consoles anymore that is so involved. Good times good times.

TL;DR: As a teen I convinced all my buddies to play EQOA, which was a great experience. It got us the required equipment to play FFXI, all we needed at that point was the PS2 HDD. I have fond memories of EQOA. I lived across town from my childhood friends who lived next door to each other. So when I saw that commercial on TV where everybody was calling each other to "slay the dragon" I somehow convinced them all to convince their parents to buy them the game and the needed peripherals. Thinking about it now, that was quite an amazing feat, being that we were all about 14, and I was the only one with a job who could actually purchase the game, subscription, keyboard, & network adapter myself. We lived in a low income city, maybe that's why it wasn't hard to find all the required equipment for our consoles. .One of my friends was the spoiled kid, so it was no problem for him. One was average. The other was not very well off, so kudos to his parents for getting for him. Granted, for the one not well off, whatever he got, it counted for him and his two brothers. That following summer I remember buying a router, packing up my PS2 & keyboard, biking 30 minutes across town countless times and spending many nights over at my buddies house and having so many LAN parties & staying up all night playing EQOA. All this was just a precursor & training for FFXI... only difference was we all had to buy HDDs for our PS2s.
I always played on the regular disc because it loaded faster into the game and at the coaches. Couldn't use an Ogre or Alchemist though. If I wanted to go to the Ogre town (name?) I had to switch discs. You are correct you didnt have to, it was my choice for faster coaches.
We would start the vanilla game then swap it out with the beta disc of Frontiers. Man I miss that game. My wife made me a hand drawn zone map of it for my birthday shortly before hurricane Katrina hit us. I still have it stowed away somewhere.
This was my first mmo as a kid. Played it alot along with my dad too. We played as a barbarian tank guy named Bambare. We put probably more than the recommended amount of points into strength. Seriously fun times.

The community is still alive and well on Facebook, it’s pretty cool to reunite and get back in touch with old friends and out faces everyone’s characters. This game is definitely the MMO G.O.A.T.
I got this game shortly after I got my PS2 as a birthday present from my future and current wife. This game came with me through marriage, kids, bankruptcy, all that fun stuff LOL. I even have pictures of my son up on my shoulders "helping" me play.
I miss this game like I miss a childhood friend. I played this game for it's entire life cycle even if the last 3 or 4 years I spent most my time in WoW or EQ on PC. I faithfully revisited the game, Named Orggrok Troll DeathKnight on Castle Lightwolf.

i've been following this revival group on fb for what seems like about 10 years now, they have made soooo much progress. I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY THIS GAME AGAIN!
Two of my friends and I would play this game every night after work for about 3 or 4 hours at one of the friends houses. I bought two extra PS2s and copies of the game so we could just leave everything there. We colored coded the PS2s and the Memory Cards because the file EQOA created would only work on that specific PS2. Mixing anything up was a nightmare. I still have everything with the matching stickers on them. It was quiet the setup we had then being broke 19-year-olds. We were really into if for a little over a year but then life starts to happen. We didn't have time for an involved game like that and moved to Champions of Norrath and Return to Arms. A lot of wonderful memories from those games, especially EQOA. We were Halflings (0.5lings as we called them) on PPO. Warrior, Rogue, and Druid are the classes we used and every night we would find someone to join our group, preferably an Enchanter. One specific Enchanter was our greatest ally as he never missed a buff. His name was Aquintas. We were incredibly wealthy as we ran a monopoly in the auction house on Mar's Blessed Alloy.

@@TheNathanNAPALM I can't see it happening. I'd love to try it though. I never took it seriously because it was on console. Loving the new content as always!
I've played just about every big mmorpg since Everquest 1, and I find myself still till this day missing this game. Over the years I wished I could still play it much like Warhammer Online grr! It was way ahead of it's time and a pleasure to play. The pet classes was some of the best ever! I still have my Frontiers disk and logitech ps2 controller/keyboard combo in storage. The keyboard/controller was pricy back then, around $100, but was the best way to play imo.
1 guy got eqoa multiplayer to work. Its great to log in and chat and explore. Game does have many npcs but no leveling, quests, abilities etc. Coaches were just added today but its a huge step.
I loved EQOA I bought all the stuff keyboard and all so i could play on a console It was broken down version but something about playing with a controller i enjoyed I even signed up and was chosen to beta test the Frontier expansion I enjoyed it .
There was no disc swapping. When the expansion came out, all content was on the new (Frontiers) disc. You could play the on old disc when Frontiers came out but you couldn't access any of the new areas.
In my mid 30's and this was my first online game I ever played.. So cool seeing a video of it again.... No joke I use to skate to 711 and grab one of the aol free internet discs just so i can play.. The phone would kick me off the game every time it rang lol
Man, I was REALLY wanting to play this back in the day. I've always looked at EverQuest 1 and this one as some of the best MMORPGs and WoW just doesn't even come close in my opinion. That's just me. I remember seeing a PS2 demo disc that had a video about this on there, and just fantasized about playing games online with people and thought it would be the coolest thing ever! :D
I Beta tested this game, as well as played it from start to finish and it changed my life and my oldest & middle sons too! My middle son was 4 at the time and basically learned how to read by playing the game and doing all the outlined Quests in the EQOA "Bible" guide, lol. I cannot express how severely missed this game is by many people. For a few years I Tri-boxed, with mainly 2 Twin Magicians, and leveled up many toons with them, and just about maxed out CM's. Used to have a controller on each thigh and main, character, "Puller" in hand, fun times. The sad thing is there are many many other people with stories all very similar but yet sony does not care to bring the game back, even after fans had a petition to save it, sad sad story. They could of very easily implemented it on the PS3 or revised it for the PS4. With all the retro remake bullshit that has been going on over the past 5 years, you would think this would be the Holy Grail of remakes. No other game has been able to fill the void that this has left in my heart since shut down in March 2012. But thankfully we have the Return Home Project that has been working tirelessly to bring the game back to form. I’m on the sandstorm everyday! The crack is back!
You never have to swap out discs during play, the Frontiers disc just stayed in (in contained all content). Once you bought Frontiers, you were set (you did not need to original disc).
man, I never knew this game existed! I've had a ps2 since 2011 or so, and if I had known, I'd have bought it! So cool, if it was released now on modern game stations, I'd play it now.
Brother this shoutout was amazing to the community of EQOA Players who want to be heard. One thing I believe you are leading people way off on though is saying the reborn state of the game is 4-5 years away, i don't believe you have insight on that part as a close follower of the group I would say the game is not but 2 years away a year if that. HOPE to see MORE from you! #SAVEEQOA #FOREVEREQOA #RETURNHOME
I was in beta test on EQOA. Interestingly there was limited content in beta, and the graphics were actually better than release. They decided, I think, that the lag would be too high when a dozen or so players were in the same place with the beta graphics, so they reduced the polygon count.
Lots of good memories and grind time. Dark Elf Shadowknight. I forgot the terms - but I was high level with the best armor grinding and grinding for many hours for 1 more level. All so you can finally type "DING!" 🤣
@@phillabong520 Yeah I don't remember any of that stuff.. But I do remember creating a new character one time (A wood elf I think), and bumping into another wood elf who was a chick (Or so she claimed), and went on and on about how she had braces... and loved to sucky sucky. 😂 After I was older I was well aware that it was most likely a guy, but me and my friends had fun messing with the "chick". The main healer I used to play with was a 60 something year old lady and she used to go on about how she still road the bull cowgirl style. Many many interesting characters in game and out. 😄
I cant wait for this game to be back, the people working on project Return Home are saints! I bought this game for myself on my 22nd birthday, and was lost in it for the next like 6 years before life got complicated... makes me sad that i missed the end of the games life :(
Sadly the first time I ever heard of this game was when it made the news for shutting down. Here's to hoping that revival group eventually gets something together, it looks like a lot of fun! Good, informative vid on it :). Too bad this was a console-only release and never got ported over before its death, with "Classic" MMOs being all the rage right now it could have easily been brought back by whoever owns EverQuest now for a quick buck.
i miss this game so much, i would put money into this like people did star citizen. my characters name from eqoa was Evilwesley from Castle lightwolf aka the guy who stood by the well in freeport.
Funnily enough this was my first mmo experience, problem was however that i never got past the login screen. As the kid i was i just somehow thought this would just magically work, i bought the game USED from a grocery store that had no idea cd keys were a thing i guess. Sad that i never got to play the game, i just recently found the cd case for the game and decided i'd finally see how it could've been. Only like a year later i would find World of warcraft though and i played the shit out of that instead with some friends of mine.
There was a shaman on my server named Cheesewheels. If you seen him shout “Wheels on the bus go round and round” you run as far as you can cause that man trained xp grind groups all day. Sucked when it happened but was also exciting
I played eqoa for most of its existence. Once the servers were shutdown i put down video games as a whole. Havnt really played any games since. That being said, if eqoa is remade i will be back in heartbeat. I miss this game sooo much .
I remember this only a little. I only played because my brother wanted to play together but he hated playing games on a pc. Still does . I thought it was ok for the time :)
The only regret I have is not playing it more while I had the opportunity. I was fortunate enough to play it as much as I did though, having gotten multiple characters capped and deep into the Class Mastery system. I met a lot of great people, and the game was a positive influence on me while I was growing up. It definitely saddens me to think I'll never go into this world the way it was back then, and that all of the items (CV etc.) that I worked so hard to get are gone forever. I'm hoping that Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen will fill that void of a chill social game with a huge potential for character power growth and character development. The world was so fantastic, and the itemization even better. If this game were to somehow make an official comeback, even if only on the PS store for the newer consoles, I would buy into it in a heartbeat. I don't think it's possible though, as I had read somewhere long ago that the company that was responsible for handling the servers no longer exists, and that a lot of the backend disappeared with it. Very sad that we don't have enough data to even properly emulate it without trying to base everything on peoples memory.
You're wrong about swapping out discs. You had to purchase EQOA Frontiers to access the new areas, and that's all you needed. You did not use the original disc anymore. All of the original EQOA and new areas in Frontiers were on the EQOA Frontiers disc, no swapping discs during play, that's wacked. You should check into the Revival project they now have a test server up and running.
Goodness I'd do anything for them to keep this project going! I swore I read something about them shutting it down back in Feb but I can't find it any where now, so maybe it's still going! I loved this game so much!!!
EQOA was my jam played on Hodstock and Proudpine Outpost. Played from Feb 20th 2003-2009 or so. I remember when you had just an compass and they updated it to show your party members as dots on the edge of the compass. EQOA on Ps3-Ps5 would had been way better for having an HDD would had got us way more content. Underfoot was the name of the next expansion but that went to Pc sadly.
6:47 - You didn’t need to swap out discs. You simply needed the Frontiers disc and you would gain access to the additional content frontiers provided. It also slightly improved the character models and performance of the game over the original.
I dont even remember there being a serious character unbalance issue. Every character and class had something that was unique. The class specification quest at level 40 or 45 were notorious difficult. I chose the warrior's bellow branch(AoE heals) as a tank which was a great AoE taunt.
MMO's should be offered to the fanbase as a going concern before sunsetting. I mean imagine burning a rembrandt painting because it was less popular than others in a collection, barmy.
If this game was made and designed for the PS2 hard drive it may have last longer. Also my copy was the base game with the expansion and never had to switch disk. I loved this game.
Fyi Werewolf, Wererat, Weregator, Werelion etc.. You could also become a Werehunter, if you were caught by the npc werehunters in main cities while infected you were immediately transformed and hostile to Every npc lol
lol WoW still today has no idea what the meaning of what real debt was! and to hold a candle stick to trying to work it off, after so many deaths while trying to level, and what the term train was about. This was the first mmo i played on my PS2 except majority of us called this EverC rack because of the addiction of never wanting to log off. my old server was Castle LightWolf and some of the names i was watching through this i wanna say where names i remember seeing around i could swear i may have known. i tryed to go back to EQOA Frontiers a few years ago in hopes of retrieving my toon or toons back but unfortunally it is when i noticed the servers where shut down. But man i do miss the game and been getting the itch to wanna go back to reminance of old times. I do still play WoW still today and still use some of the names i ran with originally from EQOA on there. Would love to see this to be brought back again.
I was confused with starting with original disc, don’t remember why you would do that, but just that there was some reason, but yes the expansion came with old content already on it

Then when you got to the new area , that big tree would kill me haha depending on your faction, that's what I remember. Good times
I never got to play EQOA. A guy I work with did and he liked it!
This was my first mmo, only played it shortly and then moved to final fantasy XI in the summer of 2004. “Her-all-did”
I Beta tested this game, as well as played it from start to finish and it changed my life and my oldest & middle sons too!
Being the first to charm dreadnaught and plvling during frontiers bets on Hagley is my fondest memory of EQOA.
Great video, thanks for posting.
You never have to swap out discs during play, the Frontiers disc just stayed in (in contained all content). Once you bought Frontiers, you were set (you did not need to original disc).
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS!!!!!!!
My pleasure!
I frickin miss this game so much.
man, I never knew this game existed! I've had a ps2 since 2011 or so, and if I had known, I'd have bought it! So cool, if it was released now on modern game stations, I'd play it now.
Best part of the video was the KS drama towards the end = )
Brother this shoutout was amazing to the community of EQOA Players who want to be heard. One thing I believe you are leading people way off on though is saying the reborn state of the game is 4-5 years away, i don't believe you have insight on that part as a close follower of the group I would say the game is not but 2 years away a year if that. HOPE to see MORE from you! #SAVEEQOA #FOREVEREQOA #RETURNHOME
I hope you are right, but just want to set expectations up right, I'd rather give a longer date than a shorter one most of the time
I was in beta test on EQOA. Interestingly there was limited content in beta, and the graphics were actually better than release. They decided, I think, that the lag would be too high when a dozen or so players were in the same place with the beta graphics, so they reduced the polygon count.
Nice! Didn’t know that at all!!
Lots of good memories and grind time. Dark Elf Shadowknight. I forgot the terms - but I was high level with the best armor grinding and grinding for many hours for 1 more level. All so you can finally type "DING!" 🤣
Master Class? Death Knight? Slayer? Good times 😭
So what I'm hearing is -- >> Everquest: Reborn > Everquest OA: Reborn
Absolutely!!
Join “Everquest Online Adventures Re-United” on Facebook if you have one. People from all servers keepin in touch on there 🤙
Funnily enough this was my first mmo experience, problem was however that i never got past the login screen.
Lol
Eqoa sandstorm you can play right now!
I played eqoa for most of its existence. Once the servers were shutdown i put down video games as a whole. Havnt really played any games since. That being said, if eqoa is remade i will be back in heartbeat. I miss this game sooo much .
I remember friending a guy called Kaiba wolf. Turns out after I quit playing, he got pretty popular in the game. Everfrost was my server.
I remember this only a little. I only played because my brother wanted to play together but he hated playing games on a pc. Still does . I thought it was ok for the time :)
Blast from the past.. would definitely play it agian.... I still have my copy
Sandstorm server. Now level 35
With cms. Were forms. Pick claws are here too. No boon good Ole default xp.
Yes my memory was mistaken on that! My apologies!
And I have made a new video talking about the Return Home updates! Exciting!
Goodness I'd do anything for them to keep this project going! I swore I read something about them shutting it down back in Feb but I can't find it any where now, so maybe it's still going! I loved this game so much!!!
Yes I believe it’s still going
I wish I tried this when it was live before sounds fascinating
Holy shit. I just saw Frisko.
CLW baby. Can't believe i am seeing people i played with.
By the time I heard of this game it was already over.
I loved this game so much. I wish I could still play it or a newer version. I would just hope that it would be true to the original EQOA.
YES MY CHILDHOOD!!!!!!!
I still have the original PS2 game.
Me too man! 😄
I did the same, till people complained and they nerfed it. My main was always the Dark elf war.
Childhood memories. Remember my halfling richyrich 🤘
MMO's should be offered to the fanbase as a going concern before sunsetting.
I mean imagine burning a rembrandt painting because it was less popular than others in a collection, barmy.
LMAO, My best friend meet his wife playing this game. We stayed in Florida she lived in Alaska.
I also met my wife in EQOA. 😃
come for the intro, stay for the end song
Can you consider making a video about 7th Saga?
Absolutely, haven’t played it
Is a very old game for Nintendo. One of the most difficult, yet most fun games I've ever played. Check some videos, a lot of fun waiting!!
I never knew this game existed back then because I left consoles after PS1.
If you want to see progress on EQOA emulator please look up Dustin Faxon in youtube search.
3 words - Nubja, Ceremonial Vestment and Grimblade😀
If this game was made and designed for the PS2 hard drive it may have last longer. Also my copy was the base game with the expansion and never had to switch disk. I loved this game.
10:03 there's Eliphaz! I would love to track him back down.
Shea Halfling Warrior CLW. I was there at the beginning...
Would be buy it in a heartbeat if it was playable offline.
Fyi Werewolf, Wererat, Weregator, Werelion etc.. You could also become a Werehunter, if you were caught by the npc werehunters in main cities while infected you were immediately transformed and hostile to Every npc lol
Aeric Sparelli and Rea Nekchev 😒
@@phillabong520 Being a Forager Ranger Dire wolf made them soooooooo easy to destroy
I was on Hodstock server, Zeroepyon, Zeroness, Vadel
I played for a while and don’t remember switching cd’s for frontiers.
never did lol you put frontiers in and never had to remove it
lol WoW still today has no idea what the meaning of what real debt was! and to hold a candle stick to trying to work it off, after so many deaths while trying to level, and what the term train was about.
The Best MMO ever released
no doubt
Nothing casual about this game. Hardcore is hardcore. Long live Cosa Nostra on CLW!
Go Marrs Fist! Lol I miss my were guild..
"The mob you idiot!" 😇
Hold on let me switch my DVD! heheheh never did this but it looks wild.
I LOVED EQOA!!!!!!
Glad to hear! Hopefully somebody gets it playable on PC that would be awesome!
Halfling Rogue called Rounder on Ferran's Hope Server...sigh.....I truly miss those days.
can you still play the ps2 everquest online game?
Not currently but a team is working to get it working on ps2 and pc
@@TheNathanNAPALM so the disc is useless
6:53 You did not have to swap discs during play ever. Don't know where you got that information.
I was confused with starting with original disc, don’t remember why you would do that, but just that there was some reason, but yes the expansion came with old content already on it
Greatest MMO ever made.
the 2nd expansion was supposed to be called underfoot they scrapped it for ps2 and released it for pc after the shutdown of European servers I believe
