  • In today's video, Ed Ward breaks down more good information on fighting steelhead, or any big gamefish for that matter. When the fish is running, let them run. When they stop, give it to them. Most people fight their steelhead too lightly, which is understandable. Ed has a better way!

Super true. Some buds and I call it for lack of better words "submitting" the fish. There's a window to do it with most steelhead minus the really hot or big ones after the initial crazy few runs and jumps. It feels like you've been cheated out of an adrenaline filled battle sometimes but its ultimately better for the fish and gets you back fishing faster!

Absolutely spot on. Hopefully these videos you guys are doing help some folks enjoy our steelhead fisheries and keep the steelhead healthy.

Agreed. With springs, you can fight them with everything you've got, and they still won't come in.That quiet moment you speak of,when they are disoriented, yet still have life,is interesting. I'll watch for that.

I actually feel relaxed when I get hooked up.
I hardly lose a Steelhead nowadays.
My biggest problem when I started was I came from bass fishing and off shore saltwater fishing so I was hard hooked setting and lost 7 hookups in a row until a long time spey gut said stop " hooking " them , they will hook themselves, just relax, turn towards the bank and gently lift.
15 years now of Rouge River Steelheading I was taught right from my first Steelhead to never use a net and do what You said in this video....cheers

"If you're passive on a whitetail buck, what you're doing is you're educating him." ~Dan Infalt
Ed Ward is to fly angling for steelhead what Dan Infalt is to hunting whitetail with a bow.
