I don’t own a winch and have never used one, but I feel informed enough that I would be able to address the basic operation and safety! Great job Tanner! Your content was very well thought out and your presentation was very methodical!
This is really good. I work for a fire department. We recently had a newer firefighter come give a winching class to my shift which is the only reason Im saying this. Don’t run a winch without the engine running. It’s amazing how many young guys I had to explain this to. With that: Know your vehicle, some alternators produce very few amps at idle. Throttling up a little (even if you’re in neutral, holding the brake) will help make sure you don’t starve your winch for power.
Great commentary on proper winching and getting out there and practicing. Also want to mention WLL or working load limits of the components used in winching. Each line, shackle, pulley block, etc has a WLL that needs to be verified for the load it's about to undertake. Thanks Tanner!!
Thank you! This is very helpful. I just installed my winch a couple weeks ago and have never used one before. This definitely gives some ideas. I appreciate your time.
Decided to finally add a Warn winch a week before a big trip. One mile into the trail after a week of rain I found myself having to use it. Great investment if your going to be exploring and traveling.
Jist bought new winch. Bought a 14.5k for the same price as a 13.5k. Probably overkill but hey! The last thing I want to do it hurt someone let alone myself. Thanks for the informative information. Saved to my watch list. Keep doing what you do! I also subbed!
I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks, thanks for sharing your knowledge. Also, how do you recommend adding an extension line And can you field repair a severed line?
I should cash my retirement out and buy a winch👀 Very informative. I have used pulley rigging for barge recovery and have seen arm size shackles break sending the bolt flying. Scary stuff.
Great video Tanner! Thanks for putting this together. Question: Did you say you were doubling your pulling force in the second example? I’ve always understood that you would need to return the working end back to the anchor point (thru a second pulley) to get a 2:1 advantage. One direction change is still 1:1.
I know stepping over a taught winch line is stupid, but seeing folks step on a limp line is painful. Walk around it if you can at least, and I'd personally evaluate the situation carefully, and if it looks ok, step over quickly. Grinding dirt/sand/etc. into the winch line seems risky too. Maybe as a compromise, wrap a line weight or blanket around the winch line and step on that instead of the bare line?
I do not think blindly reaching into an engine bay with a running engine is a good example of how to safely operate a winch. If your winch arrangement requires reaching into the engine bay to freespool, you should shut off the engine first.
You guys realize that winch mounts are IN FRONT of the radiator. So not in the engine bay, no rotating parts are in front of a radiator. Fans, belts, etc are behind the radiator

Thank you so much! I hope it helps if you do get a winch!
I have used my winch 100 of time' and I still learned something here . Thanks
I found this demonstration to be excellent, clear, thorough, and safety first. Thank you.

Very good point. Older land cruisers actually had a high idle switch for winching operation
@@Tanner_Johnson didn’t know this. Very cool.

Great content Tanner! By the way- I was really neat to meet your parents on the last EFRT episode!
Haha. So cool!
This was awesome. Thinking of purchasing my first Jeep with a winch. Instructional videos like this are very helpful.
great timing im just planning on getting a winch
I really like trail talks ... nice work 👌👍
Good video 👍
Nice winching tip video, guys! U guys will never stop inspiring us!

Great video thanks it's really helpful 👏👏👍
Such good content!
Great tips!!
Excellent information 💪💪
Good job Man.
Should a person winch with the hood open and up for safety?
Do you think you may make it to The Big Iron overland rally here in Kansas, September 29th and 30th.
I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks, thanks for sharing your knowledge. Also, how do you recommend adding an extension line And can you field repair a severed line?
Field Repair metal line: sure (splice or wire-rope clips) synthetic/rope line: good luck! about all you can do for that is make a knot
Cool video!! Can I ask what trail you were on at 30 seconds in?

Yup. It’s a 2:1 with the double line pull. If you google winch double line pull it will show some diagrams explaining it.
We want a winch on our Kombi so badly. Would have helped us so many times on our Pan American road trip 😭

15:52 for hot winch action
Did you upgrade the alternator to a higher output?

or maybe he is comfortable knowing not to put his hands on moving engine parts?
@@tattooedmillionair that is what most people who lose a finger in a serpentine belt think until it happens. Why not shut it off?

To my fellow broke af brothers... DO NOT SLIDE YOUR HAND ON A STEEL CABLE... Your soul will exit your body when you catch a burr. 😬. Gloves or not.
🤕 great advice.
Why are we "eliminating metal wherever we can" ?
i want to get into overlanding but this hobby isnt cheap to get into. First step get a truck or SUV
Talking, talking and talking
Great video!! 👏🏻
