I went to one of Jims clinics in 08, he broke my habit of blinking, and showed me some great tips. He's an incredible umpire.

Thomas Storff Too bad Jim drank the Richie Phillips Kool-Aid in 1999. He could have been in the Hall of Fame if he hadn't.

David Steinle please explain. I don't know what you are referring to.

Richie Phillips was the president of the umpires' union from 1978 through 1999. In July 1999, he met with most of the MLB umpires in Philadelphia and have them sign letters of resignation which were to be submitted to commissioner Bud Selig and would have been effective September 2 of that season.
Less than a week later, most umpires realized this was a terrible idea and rescinded their letters. Some umpires, however, stuck with Phillips and thus were terminated by MLB. Evans was one of the nine AL umpires at the time who went over the cliff.

Thomas Storff I'm an umpire and I have had a bad habit of blinking. What'd he do to help you?

Greg Rosche he'd have us put our mask on, hold a ball and tap us in the mask with the ball. Everytime we blinked, we'd have to do some sort of calisthenics. Running, pushups, situps, mountain climbers. We couldn't leave camp until we didn't blink ten in a row.

Learning to track a pitch with your eye instead of moving your head is one of the big secrets of being a plate umpire

The former MLB umpire in this video sounds like Jon Stewart imitating George W. Bush.

Not with you yelling at me - hey he is way nicer to you than the coaches and players will be. the other thing is if there is a hole in your defenses YOU WILL GET HIT, AND IT HURTS LIKE HELL. the first thing we learned is you have to be perfect your first and get better every day after, and these are major leagues pitches not high school stuff. I wish we had you tube videos when I started.
