  • @possumverde

    It's not random. What the ball does depends on the orientation of the holed side and the type of spin put on it. In general, if the spin is such that the orientation of the holed / smooth sides remains constant, the ball will break in the direction of the smooth side. If the sides rotate with the spin then it will tend to mimic the real baseball pitch associated with that spin (just more exaggerated). The behavior is predictable and (for the most part) controllable.

    Interesting test. I grew up playing Wiffle ball on days when I wasn't playing baseball. Great practice. But, I have an interesting test for you. Compare a Major League pitcher, using a MLB official baseball to a Major League pitcher using a regulation NFHS baseball (bigger seams).

  • @caboose41

    I believe he hasn't lived to the high ceiling expectations he was given, however that doesn't mean he hasn't had an impact bat during his tenure with the Dodgers. From 2006-2011, he averaged around 130 hits, and a .288 batting average, and 70 RBIs per season. That type of production can't just go unnoticed, along with a .994 career fielding percentage at first base. With his current power, I agree that he hasn't done anything big. As an overall player though, I believe he is doing great,

  • @possumverde

    It has a bit to do with doctoring. Scuff balls and spitters rely on drastically changing the wind resistance of part of the baseball. The half of a wiffle ball with the holes creates much more resistance than the smooth side so it acts like an exaggerated version of a doctored ball (holes = scuff, smooth = spit). They could have used a real baseball, but to do it justice they would need a pitcher familiar with using doctored balls and I doubt many would really want to advertise that skill.

  • @travisaurusrex562
    @travisaurusrex562 12 років тому

    what does this have to do with doctored baseballs?

  • @kquan96
    @kquan96 11 років тому

    Yeah is 1/3rd as heavy so it also doesn't have much momentum like a baseball does. Which makes it a lot harder to throw a wiffle ball at that speed than throwing a baseball at that speed.

    Of the five presumed extinct forms, the most - for lack of better choice of words - lethal and deceptive is Koto Ryu. Granted, the last known grandmaster was Seiko Fujita... he died in the early 1960's and left no MALE heir. His niece, however, was extremely proficient. Her son, Saigo Katsugi (died in 1995), passed on her teachings to the person currently considered the grandmaster of this art - and likely the best martial artist on the planet - Akio Katsugi - a woman!

    It's also tougher to hit because a baseball never rises after release. No major league hitter has practiced trying to make contact on a ball going up. It is technically like trying to hit a knuckleball, but 10 times worse.
