Pre-patch, the only combos into it were weak/late attacks (f-air 1, late n-air, and late up-tilt). There were very few high damage combos that ended with inhale. The change made it possible to combo regular up-tilt into inhale at a many %’s. I think people complain a little too much about the potency of patches. Yeah they're not character defining like smash 4 patches, but they're not really meant to be either. They're just supposed to give low tiers the little jump start they need, and slow down the high tiers a notch or two. Obviously they don't always succeed (wow buffing Kirby's sourspots didn't bump him up a tier?) but they've been good enough mostly.
I do like the patches overall. But seeing great buffs like these, Brawler, etc... I feel like there's so much wasted potential with many characters! It makes me sad that they're so afraid of doing more soft reworks and meaningful changes. I'll never forget when, in Smash 4, Mewtwo (then a low tier) got a huge buff and boom, Abadango WON A MAJOR WITH HIM (Pound 2016.) It was one of the hypest Smash moments I can remember & I hope we see more stuff like that going forward.
@@WhyDo Smash 4 buffs definitely did some great things, but a few of them were sort of at the expense of the character's direction. Mewtwo sure got a helluva lot better, but now what used to be the best Pokemon for fighting with its mind became a maniac rushing around whapping people with its tail. Sure shadow ball and up throw both stayed good, but its direction and theming almost completely flipped (which is ironic because the final smash uses Mega Mewtwo Y instead of X) Tbh the topic is a bit too volatile and iffy on either side for me to say anything worse about these bigger changes though.
Coming to a screen near you in... "The JUICIEST Smash Ultimate Buffs" ... or even "The WILDEST Smash Ultimate Buffs"... I'm saying it will have some adjective, the adjective will be in all caps, and it will include Mr. Douglas Jay Falcon!
Plant also received some pretty nice buffs for his up tilt and down smash through the patches, like up tilt now is a freaking invisible anti-air that can combo pretty darn well! Down smash also comes out faster which makes it a better kill option at ledge (one of plant's biggest strengths). These changes won't make him the best character in the game or anything but they make plant a lot more fun to play as you have fun options to use in neutral! I've been playing plant since he came out and believe me these changes are a lot of fun, I wish Nintendo would do this kind of change to characters more as it adds a flexibility/fun factor to them that give em some spice
young link when he got those buffs a while back really helped fix his main issue, killing. his kill confirms now work at a MUCH higher percent range with it, and raw up smash kills straight up at 110 (on mid weights) which is crazy considering that a 3 frame move can combo into it at any percent (1st hit of back air)
Pit down tilt's changes made him such a better character. It used to send out at a non-combo angle and was slower I think so one of his best tools for combos and kill confirms just didn't exist. Edit: just looked through the patch notes and it looks like 4.0 was smaller frame related buffs and 8.0 is what I'm referring to. It also increased up air's kill potential and rounded him off in other areas
Nobody talks about Samus, a character who got called the worst one in the beginning unfairly, who got some really cool buffed WITH a super healthy side of optimization by her players. Samus is a high tier, yet no one is like "omg, Samus went from being considered worst of the game to a cool high tier", no, everyone is like "I suck online and the only samus experience is against bad spamming samus players".
I legitimately picked up ike after these buffs and never looked back. He's now my absolute favorite character to play in this game, doc is also up there but definitely not on the levels of ike.
I'm really happy with how they dealt with Pokemon Trainer. PT was the Ivysaur show before some of the patches, and with some tuning on the stupid shit Ivy could pull off (down throw up b killed at 75), and some buffs on Zard, the character feels much more like how it was supposed to feel - a team, the optimal way of playing is switching.
14:39 Charizard's Up Throw in Smash 4 patch 1.0.8 I believe it got strenghten as much as Ike's Aether at the ledge. If you instead consider all of Smash 4 patches Charizard's Up Throw wins with no competition killing post patch around 130% earlier than Pre Patch i believe Edit: If you couldn't get it, I'm very interested in Smash balance patches Edit 2: I have done some testing and noticed that due to the different blastzone mechanics I have done my calculations wrong. Charizard Up Throw actually killed around 150%/155% earlier(this time I used Ruben's Smash 4 calculator so hopefully it is right) Mario from the center of FD with no DI. While if we consider one patch it kills 97% earlier from 1.0.6 to 1.0.8
@@WhyDo Yeah Charizard's Up Throw basically didn't exist in Pre Patch days and it was buffed to the second best kill throw in the game(behind Ness' Back Throw)
As a PT main, I’d love to see you talk about how Charizard got some crazy ass buffs around July 2019. They gave him a THIRD kill throw (fthrow), made his nair bigger and better, and made his ftilt INSANELY powerful
I actually wasn't thinking of the Charizard buffs, they're kind of wild. I should definitely try and work them into a script soon because that lizard has SAUCE now. That nair???
The thing about Diddy's recovery pre-patch is that it didn't work properly before. Fully charging it actually made it worse. The distance you flew at full charge didn't compensate for the distance you fell during charging. So it definitely needed a patch.
I think the best thing about Ike's buffs is that he went from using this random move created for smash as his kill move to his most iconic attack from his home game.
Sakurai: “Hey, are you the one responsible for those Ike buffs?” Employee: “Yes, Mr Sakurai, I’m sorry, the Up-B was so overtuned, I…” Sakurai: “Shh, it’s ok… here.” *Hands over Pyra* “….. do it again.”
It's a crime that Doc's Up Special isn't called "Prescription Punch", because he's diagnosing you with pain. Also, the down-tilt buff he got in 7.0.0 was the most excited I was for any character in Ultimate once I saw the amount of buffs that he got. Though in my personal opinion, he needs like two more buffs and then he's complete.
I remember pre patch diddy. Every move had lag up the ass, fully charging the jet pack was actually worse than just pressing it and nothing connected or KO’d.
OK as much as we'll meme on the Sonic buffs, I seriously just want my Spin Charge to work without my opponent falling out of my move.😭 Anyway great video & I totally agree with you. The balancing team of Ultimate should look at an entire fighters moveset & look at what could be buffed & not just underlying issues that are prominent. Case in point Sonic. We Sonic Mains complained for over a year that our Up-Air wouldn't function properly & whilst this buff didn't fix the move, we'll glady take the improved hit consistentency, however Up-Smash was also a bad Sonic move, however we adapted our neutral to not utilise the move, so we stopped caring about it & yet the Up-Smash buffs were not only unexpected for us, but they genuinely gave this move some actual worth in using, like say OoS & as an Anti-Air. Of course Sonic is a Top-Tier that doesn't require the extensive buffs that Ike obtained, however I don't see why the balancing team should focus exclusively on fixing some moves & not buffing others & vice versa. If you aren't gonna redesign a characters moveset to improve them, fuck it just throw whatever you want at the wall & see what sticks lmao.
As an Ike main who, I fully admit, plays very defensive, I preferred pre-8.0 Ike because killing was _much_ more consistent and safer from anywhere on stage. Now it's practically impossible to kill characters who out-frame data you without a hard read or managing to land dtilt or nair at the very strict %s and positions to kill confirm, some of which simply do not work with rage. Don't get me wrong, having dash attack and aether as kill options is nice, but with my playstyle they barely ever come into play. In other words, the patch made Ike less fun for me since I find consistently killing to be more fun that throwing out hard reads.
My personal favorite buff in Smash Ultimate, is the buff that allowed Ryu and Ken to cancel their down smash to specials. That buff was insane imo, You can do some great shield pressure and even shield break set up stuff with that like, fair, to d-smash to Shakunetsu hadoken or Shoryuken with Ryu, or Fair, D-smash to Oosoto Mawashi Geri(Half circle forward) to Inazuma kick for Ken. Plus you can do a lot of damedge with it, and you can kara cancel the move, for example if you kara cancel it into the tatsumaki senpukyaku you get more horizontal distance travel.
I’m gonna put it out there and say, A day never goes by when I don’t wonder why Mario’s down air isn’t a ground pound Would it be good? I dunno, but it just makes sense…
reminds me of how the patches they looked at lucas and said "these moves sure could use more hitstun from the electricity attack effect" and it was silly
You should’ve mentioned Ken and Ryu’s buffs where they can cancel smash attacks to supers and having a very easy attack that leads to different inputs. I think it’s in 7.0.0 update i dunno
I think a pretty interesting video you could make is talking about smash 4 guy fieri, how he changed in ultimate, if you played him back then, the controversy surrounding him back in 4 etc... It would be really interesting
Haha I actually only really played Brawler for fun in 4, I wasn't super interested in him as a character. It was only in Ultimate that he really became awesome to me. If it interests you though, Gaegel made a mod that brought back a (very crazy) version of Smash 4 Brawler to Ultimate and we had a blast playing with it! The video is on his channel: ua-cam.com/video/oXQtr57ys5c/v-deo.html
I thinkt he Ike one is also a really cool balance change because Ike's Up B is his most iconic move, it's essentially his Falcon Punch. It's got a really memorable voice line, a really cool animation and it was moderately useful in his old iterations from Brawl all the way to prepatch Ike. Pre patch Ike was a very 1 dimension and H O N E S T character that turned a lot of old unga bunga Ike mains away from the playstyle because spamming a nigh uncontestable falling nair waiting for a hit confirm was really boring both to play and play against. When they changed him though they grabbed one of his old most iconic and kinda forgotten about serotonin injections and turned it into a core of his kit. Overall I think Ike is a worse character after the buffs but I think he's an infinitely funner character to play as especially because you can work towards his dopamine button as a win condition.
Im glad to play the toddler with the rocket launcher. I remember when ikes up b got buffed and i started shitting my pants 100 percent instead of 10 percent of my hits on shield. But when you wield the rocket launcher, you feel powerful.
fun fact, the reason Ike is so buff compared to brawl is because Ike had two games, path of radiance and radiant dawn, which chronologically happen one after the other. in brawl they took the Ike from path of radiance, and later took the one from radiant dawn where he's older and buffer.
I love how after three of my big mains from Smash 4, Corrin, Bowser Jr., and Diddy Kong got nerfed in Ultimate (okay not so much Junior as he already got buffed in the game transition), Sakurai's team just threw a bunch of buffs to these characters to redeem them. Corrin's much more fun to play with, the Junior buffs are very nice (though I might have replaced him with Banjo at this point), and this video might rejuvenate my interest to play more Diddy. On top of all that, all the buffs Mii Brawler got had me interested in using them more and grinding them out to be No. 1 on my characters' Elite Smash GSP standings... before I just did same for Pyra/Mythra. Digression aside, bottom line is that I like these buffs for the characters I play with.
I've quit this game and left the community but I couldn't NOT click on one of your videos. you really do just make the best smash content on the platform
As a Dedede main, the buffs to his uptilt and up air let them kill reliably now and basically gave him two more kill moves which I think helps him keep up with the killing power of other superheavies. I found Dedede he had some strong kills but all of them were extremely slow or hard to hit, so it's nice that he now has "do not be above him" moves that punishes opponents for being in the wrong position around him. Dedede to me felt like he didn't have those kinds of instant threat kill moves that the other superheavies had and I think this puts him more in line with them. Also, finally being able to catch and rethrow gordos at a closer range is a godsend when we were constantly getting hit by our own gordos more than the opponent would. Now if only I could say my boy Ridley got the same love... (please make dragdown fair actually combo into stuff to give us some spice.) It doesn't even combo into jab reliably and it just hurts when you see all the nutty stuff other characters get with dragdowns.

It was one of the hypest Smash moments I can remember & I hope we see more stuff like that going forward.
AHHHH HES BACK edit: congrats on getting sponsored
As an Ike main i can agree that the Aether buff is the best thing to happen in smash history
The Aether buff is like falcon’s side b buff, glorious.

WhyDo: What do you have there?
Ike: A KNIFE!!
WhyDo: NO!
Dude, we cant talk about buffs without mentioning Falcon, he went from "meh, probably bad" to "fuck, dis man scary"

Ngl, that full recovery joke actually made me laugh

That shulk clip at the end is the perfect example of the average min-min player's decision making skills
Your Ike buff analogy had me laughing way too hard. Thanks for making videos that always make me laugh :D
That Ike clip at 15:11 gave me life oml
young link when he got those buffs a while back really helped fix his main issue, killing. his kill confirms now work at a MUCH higher percent range with it, and raw up smash kills straight up at 110 (on mid weights) which is crazy considering that a 3 frame move can combo into it at any percent (1st hit of back air)
Finally they give the appropriate kill power that Ike deserves, for this man swinging a large hunk of iron as his sword.
I like the little hidden jokes you throw in here and there for those who pay attention to the chapter titles
I main Ken.
Version 6.0.0. decided that down smash should be cancelable.
"Why?"
I don't know.
"Useful?"
Very.
"Broken?"
Absolutely.
KIRBAH, I’m trying to get off ledge, but size of my hurtbox keeps getting me Aether’d
I absolutely love the delivery of "stupid shit" at the beginning of Ike's section.
Nobody talks about Samus, a character who got called the worst one in the beginning unfairly, who got some really cool buffed WITH a super healthy side of optimization by her players.
Samus is a high tier, yet no one is like "omg, Samus went from being considered worst of the game to a cool high tier", no, everyone is like "I suck online and the only samus experience is against bad spamming samus players".
that ike really hated that luma
That Ike was me and... I learned Smash 4 by playing my friend who mained Rosa... once I see Luma I can't help myself I GOTTA PLAY VOLLEYBALL
I legitimately picked up ike after these buffs and never looked back. He's now my absolute favorite character to play in this game, doc is also up there but definitely not on the levels of ike.
I'm glad there's still people in this world who still love sonic, dr mario, and Diddy Kong as much as I do
I do indeed read the chapter titles, I checked to see what they were called every time I felt it had transitioned into a new one
you forgot to talk about the Mythra buffs
the character was literally unplayable before but now she is stupid busted
1:38 ahh, my favorite tech: *up-b out of egg*
"It adds this threatening presence to Ike's pressure"
me when I get forward smashed at ledge and killed at 60% in brawl
"idk if people actually read the chapter titles but i like it when the progress bar is all split up like that it looks really cool"
Dr Mario isn't Mario but pissed off, he's Mario but shit
Which is why hes pissed
14:39 Charizard's Up Throw in Smash 4 patch 1.0.8 I believe it got strenghten as much as Ike's Aether at the ledge.
If you instead consider all of Smash 4 patches Charizard's Up Throw wins with no competition killing post patch around 130% earlier than Pre Patch i believe
Edit: If you couldn't get it, I'm very interested in Smash balance patches
Edit 2: I have done some testing and noticed that due to the different blastzone mechanics I have done my calculations wrong.
Charizard Up Throw actually killed around 150%/155% earlier(this time I used Ruben's Smash 4 calculator so hopefully it is right) Mario from the center of FD with no DI.
While if we consider one patch it kills 97% earlier from 1.0.6 to 1.0.8
130%?! I remember that buff but I forgot how absurd it was, god damn!
@@WhyDo Yeah Charizard's Up Throw basically didn't exist in Pre Patch days and it was buffed to the second best kill throw in the game(behind Ness' Back Throw)
It’s been thirty two trillion years....
2:47 cursed Dr. Mario.
Another welcome edition to my inbox. Always excited to see a vid from you, man!
LETS GOOO WHYDO WITH THE SPONSOR GET THAT BAG
I spaced out from a text and all I heard was, "Hey! Maybe that toddler shouldn't have a knife." I died laughing 😂
Sakurai: “Hey, are you the one responsible for those Ike buffs?”
Employee: “Yes, Mr Sakurai, I’m sorry, the Up-B was so overtuned, I…”
Sakurai: “Shh, it’s ok… here.” *Hands over Pyra* “….. do it again.”
17:05 made me cry
I remember pre patch diddy. Every move had lag up the ass, fully charging the jet pack was actually worse than just pressing it and nothing connected or KO’d.
OK as much as we'll meme on the Sonic buffs, I seriously just want my Spin Charge to work without my opponent falling out of my move.😭
Anyway great video & I totally agree with you.
I’m gonna put it out there and say,
A day never goes by when I don’t wonder why Mario’s down air isn’t a ground pound
Would it be good? I dunno, but it just makes sense…
I think it would be cool if it was a stall and fall that you could cancel whenever since you can ground pound cancel in mario
reminds me of how the patches they looked at lucas and said "these moves sure could use more hitstun from the electricity attack effect" and it was silly
15:16 Hey. It was 6 years between Brawl and Smash 4. Ike had a lot of time to get those gains.
My boi Kirby got some NICE buffs.
You should’ve mentioned Ken and Ryu’s buffs where they can cancel smash attacks to supers and having a very easy attack that leads to different inputs. I think it’s in 7.0.0 update i dunno
That's coming up for sure! Just couldn't fit everything into one video :)
I think a pretty interesting video you could make is talking about smash 4 guy fieri, how he changed in ultimate, if you played him back then, the controversy surrounding him back in 4 etc... It would be really interesting
!
Thanks !
Yo that S_sketch transition tho. Fire 🔥

@@WhyDo Vegas Gang for life (even though after effects is WAY superior)
fun fact, the reason Ike is so buff compared to brawl is because Ike had two games, path of radiance and radiant dawn, which chronologically happen one after the other. in brawl they took the Ike from path of radiance, and later took the one from radiant dawn where he's older and buffer.
Digression aside, bottom line is that I like these buffs for the characters I play with.

oh lol I started getting really into Doc and Ike since June 2020, now I know why !
