BREAKING NEWS 9/18/24: THE LAWSUIT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING LMAOO 😭😭 www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/release/en/2024/240919.html
UPDATE 2/2/24: Apparently Palworld server costs are currently $475,000 PER MONTH. Pocketpair's (only) networking engineer was told to "never let the service go down no matter what ... without regard to cost." This company is insane... twitter.com/WDBTHtGP/status/1753467000683131223
    Correction(s):
    - Ark does let you customize the EXP modifier and some game rules! But I do love the sheer range of settings Palworld offers (day/night duration, whether you drop items on death, etc.), and I think Palworld's design overall does respect your time as far as this type of survival game goes.

This stupid little game is addicting I have it on my Series x and I bought it on steam to play it on my that's where it's getting the majority of it runs surprisingly very well on the legion go very addicting little device the moment I unlocked the ability to give lip monk the little squirrel whatever. His name is a machine gun to sit on my head and shoot people that came to attack my base. It was game over and then I unlocked the assault rifle. Oh man, you know what I'm surprised at the map is actually pretty big. I wasn't expecting it to be this big. There's a lot of areas to explore. There's a lot of things to collect. I am truly truly addicted to this little game. It's literally the only thing I play on my legion if it wasn't for the fact that it has to be online I would be playing it a lot more if it was offline because I take my legion go with me everywhere. I have a bag for it. I get to work early. I play on my legion go outside until the I open the store. I take a lunch break which is roughly about an hour and a half. I play on my legion go. I use my legion goal more than any other device. It is my greatest gaming investment that I've made in a long time. Super happy. I even went out and bought 100 watt charger for the house for the car which is a cigarette lighter. So I'm playing while I'm gaming in the car and I'm charging it. I have a I have a massive 3000 watt battery pack with 65 w charging fast charging so I can be able to play while it charges if ever. I'm going to area where I can't charge it while I play. Truly addicting. I have so many games on there

I've been addicted to Palworld for like 5 days and its crazy seeing all of these pieces of inspiration. They took great parts of several games and mixed it together. That's what great artist do, but it's insane seeing a GAME with so many moving parts, pull it off. Great vid by the way

Thanks! And that's a good point, it's a strangely refreshing kind of... blatant stealing to see in a game. I think for all the controversy (they got hollow knight/BotW ripoffs too) this studio has something special going on. Wishing them the best with any high quality 'heavily inspired' games in the future, since it honestly might be a big untapped market outside of just Palworld. I wonder what crazy genres they can blend

@@WhyDo we've always had imitators as the staple of video game iteration. We call those who follow in the footsteps of the greats "clones" (remember all the "doom clones"?) and we even call genres by the names of the games they imitate (like the classic Metroidvanias, or Rogue-likes). I think people are losing their minds over exactly nothing of substance; if you take something from someone else and you take your time to digest it, to iterate on it, to give your own spin on it, then it becomes yours, and I see Palworld has done exactly that; they have not iterated over the surface appearance of what they copied from (much), but they have trodden genuinely new ground in the gameplay department: this is the first monster tamer where your monsters are a meaningful part of the base building, where they provide automation. You can't find that ANYWHERE else today, and that's huge, on top of all the other things that they have done well. I think Palworld could easily spawn a fair numbers of imitators in turn, a new generation of monster tamers where the monsters do more than just one thing, where they become a meaningful component of other game loops instead of being a self-contained ecosystem.

"Making the most of what they have" seems to be the motto of Palworld! I couldn't fit it in the video for time, but there was a Pocketpair post a couple years back seeking engineers to hire, and I found it very interesting: twitter.com/PocketpairJapan/status/1317109810811203585
"12. Always goes above and beyond the job category. Engineers often decide on plans and specifications.
      13. There is no concept of seniors and juniors.
      14. There is no concept of hierarchy."
If all that's true, it's an environment where it's very easy to allow implementation to influence design, rather than just the other way around, and everyone can have a say in decisions. I suspect that this is what let them do the "dev tool -> front facing feature" trick that you just described!

Apparently the person who compared them has a grudge against Palworld for "endorsing animal abuse" (as if Pokemon already dosent :V) and didnt expect their post to blow up QUITE as much as it did...
Definitely hoping Palworld goes decently hard on replacing the cardboard cutouts with people/an actual plot, which the intro SEEMS to hint towards... there's just jack shit for now outside of the Journal entries and Paldeck entries (alongside map STILL not being complete, despite how massive it is) :V

2:28 "the animation of the pals [carry] more than everything else"
it's true! one of the core concepts of the game, acc to the lead dev/director, was "automation with emotion" -- not just having a base with generic worker grunts, but having workers that emote and express themselves thru animations. thats part of why development took so long: ~20 animations per pal, x 130 pals, is a lot of animation to make! especially for a team that self-professed to "not knowing what a rig was" at first!

Palworld executed on what we've all known for years.
Modern games are predatory by design, selling you half-complete thoughts and charging you again and again for the next piece of the puzzle. Or they'll sell you loot boxes until you're blue in the face just so you can try to "keep pace" with the whales in pay-to-win fashion. Or they'll simply release games in a broken state because the devs are overworked and underpaid with not enough time to execute properly.
Palworld isn't trying to push the needle. It's not trying to put money before the gameplay experience. It's giving us the kind of experience like early Blizzard games gave us: a love letter from devs who love games and aspire to make something enjoyable at an accessible price.
I freaking LOVE that these devs did so much with so little in terms of expeprience and budget.
This game gives me hope for small studios and people like me who have all but completely stopped gaming so I can make enjoyable games instead.
I want my kid to enjoy gaming the way I did as a kid: pure joy with reckless abandon, never worrying when I have to fork out another $10, $20, $50 just to continue playing, and never having to feel guarded about the studio trying to rip me off around every corner.

The only reason it’s nearly 100 years for some works is because companies like lobbying more then sharing.

Battle Revolution did remake the models and animations, but they used the old ones as a base, and the game had like no content.
For comparison, X/Y had to make about 600 Pokemon from scratch, as well as a new adventure to go along with them. Ignoring Colosseum, none of the Stadium games also had to make a fully featured, satisfying Pokemon adventure, as well as a bunch of new 3D animations.

Using an AI to generate a blurry picture that might pass as a kitchen from a distance was the best we could do... my only complaint about the whole "rip off this, rip off that" situation with palworld is:
where do people draw the line?
I get some pals are obviously almost 1-to-1 in terms of design with their Pokemon equivalent. Cremis and Evee being basically the same thing.
But when Lords of the Fallen launched, no one was saying "they stole this from Dark Souls" even though 90% of it's gameplay is just Dark Souls. Not Dark Souls with guns, that's Remnant. Just straight up Dark Souls by a different dev studio, under a different name. If people want to argue the "Squint Test" about Palworlds looking indistinguishable from pokemon, I can promise you, I could throw up gameplay of Lords of the Fallen, Elden Ring and Lies of P, have everyone squint and I doubt anyone would be 100% correct in guessing which game is which.
But we call those "Souls-likes", instead of "THEY STOLE FROM DARK SOULS OMG", meanwhile Palworld only shares the designs of, and capturing of, Pals with Pokemon. Everything else is, as you said, from 20 other games, who probably got it from 20 other games before them as well. That new samurai game, whose name I forgot, is literally just Ghost of Tsushima with Assassin's Creed/Spider-man traversal. Wild Hearts was literally just Monster Hunter with Fortnite building. Anyone else see the new Silent Hill 2 trailer and get confused thinking it was RE4? And let's talk about TemTem which everyone seems to forget about when discussing Palworlds and Pokemon.
So while i get the whole: "designs look stolen" argument, considering Nintendo hasn't done anything since the game was announced with those exact same designs present back in 2021, I don't think they plan on doing anything at all because they know they don't have a case. The message they sent was more in regards to the pokemon mod for Palworlds, which Nintendo struck down with the speed of the gods the second it went live. That alone should tell you, Nintendo IS watching, they've done nothing. There is a reason.

I think pokemon suing is pretty limited on a couple factors:
-The game itself is pretty unique on its own standing. Yes its a different hodgepodge of various mechanics, but what game isnt that anymore. Also they cannot say "its just like pokemon" because of 1 or 2 similarities.
-they have to go through and hard prove asset theft or straight up plaigerisim.
And for the most important point:
-Theres also the matter of public opinion. The fact it sold 4 million copies within the first couple days is a blessing for palworld, and also the fact that it runs 1 million concurrent players everyday. If pokemon sues and gets palworld shut down, thats gonna be a very bad pr stunt because theyve just blocked millions of people playing a game they enjoy playing. This coupled with the fact that it raised the standard for this genre of gaming, and if pokemon does sue, it feels like they are trying to remove competition, punishing a rogue company for "raising the bar for standards," and limiting what players should enjoy.

For some reason the game is just unironically fun… somehow, the sheer amount of shit in it creates a game that is literally the exact sum of its parts. And given how many parts there are, that sum somehow ends up way bigger than you’d expect lol

Glad I finally found a video talking about this. Others are right: Palworld is inspired by pokemon, but it is not a ripoff or plagiarism.
Rimworld's worker system (although many worker systems exist in other games like oxygen not included etc), building systems ripped from survival battle royales and their spin-off genres (fortnite only being the most recent and infamous, rust and dayZ being much more apt comparisons), breath of the wild is an insanely obvious comparison for the climbing mechanic and the opening of the game. You can really just keep going with these comparisons. Pokemon is bottom of the barrel in comparison terms, and it was an insanely smart move to play heavily on the pokemon parody when they made Palworld to drum up interest.
I too was ready to hate on the game if it was just riding pokemon's coattails while being utterly mediocre.
    But it isn't.
There is plenty of meat to this game, and a unique product. If anything, I wish they ripped off harder and a little better. Despite the comparison to rimworld, it lacks the feature of assigning number priorities to specific workers for their different jobs they can do. i.e. if I have a mining and igniting pal, I can't tell it to prefer mining to lighting fires around the base.
Now sure, I can pick the pal up and throw it at a job to assign it until the job is finished, but if that's something like mining an ore node then they finish the job and we're back at the same problem.
This leads to having to make whole separate bases where I do one or two specific things to make things really efficient.
Other times though, the Palworld creators made some insanely smart decisions.
For example, the minecraft mod that added pokemon to the game (forget the name now) was really fun, but had a problem because they imported the catching mechanics straight from the game. Because the game was openworld, and crafting ultra balls was a matter of mining to make pokeballs and not actually training from lower levels to catch higher stuff, you could always just skip from beginning with your level 5 starter straight to level 50 or 60 (whatever the highest level you could find in the wild). You often had decent odds to catch anything at full health, so never needed to fight the level 50 or 60 and could just catch it off the bat with enough balls.
That problem is still marginally present in palworld, but it's much better here for a few reasons.
    1) your character can be killed in palworld. This stops you taking on absolutely everything you see at vastly higher levels because there is a risk of being ages away from a warp spot and having to traipse across the map to get back to your stuff when you die.
    2) The chances of catching higher level stuff is incredibly low, and the resources you use for crafting "pal-spheres" isn't trvival, at least when you start out, and the better spheres get more and more costly in terms of how practical the materials are to get. Sure, there are some ways around this like merchant cheese strats, but this is a pretty effective deterrant to most players who won't think to do that.
    3) even if you catch a much higher level pal, using it decreases the level of the pal until it hits your player level, which is a separate stat that you gain throughout. Ironically, I think this is not only a fantastic mechanic that palworld has come up with, but a fantastic solution to a pokemon series problem has: overlevelling.
If people had the option in game to have a slow player level difficulty designed purposefully in the game which they could turn on to counterract exp-share shenanigans which did the same thing Palworld does and reduces pokemon team levels to your player level, I think you could have a much more fun experience for old players while not doing anything to hurt Game freaks' current approach to recent pokemon entries being inclusive to new ones.
The game has done some really interesting stuff by mashing a bunch of pre-existing ideas, the same thing all good art should do honestly. Nintendo doesn't need people to ride for them and defend them, they have all the money in the world and if they had a case for plagiarism or IP infringement they'll bring the heat.
ALSO it's worth baring in mind that more games competing with pokemon forces nintendo to actually put work in and improve their next title. Pokemon has barely innovated in the nearly 3 decades it has existed, it needs that kick to motivate the greedy CEOs and bosses who don't care to see the game improve for consumers, they just want more of the same pumped out because it sells. Fortunately palworld is providing that boot. Both can and shoul absolutely exist in the same world.

Some part of me absolutely hates that Palworld became so big as "Pokemon with guns", because as a fan of the monstertaming genre (it's all I play besides regular RPGs) the whole pokemon clone thing always felt so... devaluing to genuinely good games just because they had tameable monsters in them. And then along comes Palworld, finally a monstertaming game that takes the world by storm and isn't Pokemon and it's mired in choices that scream "we looked REAL hard at Pokemon design philosophy". It's truly the monkeys paw curling.
And it's not like I can't see it. For a lot of designs I'll give the benefit of the doubt, but there are numerous color palettes ripped straight out of Pokemon. Makes "stop calling an entire subgenre Pokemon clone" sound real hollow. I hate that, not gonna lie.

At their core, open world games and basebuilding games are collectathons. Collect resources, find new areas, use resources to better find new areas and new resources, use new resources, rinse and repeat. The genius of Palworld is that now the Pals are part of that process. Catching them all has a very specific benefit because now enemies aren't just minor to major obstacles for progression or things to be endlessly beaten for resources. Catching pals gives you new resources to help you in all levels of the progression loop. New workers, new ways of working, new ways to combat enemies, etc.

The difference between this game and others with no originality, is that the devs actually know why all the things they stole work, instead of being lazy.
