Smash players getting locked out of their house because putting the key in the lock and doing a half circle turn is too hard
Anyways modern is cool I hope that weird throw tech thing with them gets fixed and the characters more gutted by it get their kits working better on modern
This one is funny
An actual funny comment I haven’t seen anywhere else 😂. Good job man
I wheezed
SF6 players when they get into a street fight in real life but they aren't fighting a sexy Chinese woman with thick thighs:
Genuinely, I think that point about the anti-tilt factor of making funny faces with other people is something super overlooked in competitive games. Giving players the opportunity for completely non-gameplay-related self-expression and giving us a way to humanize our opponents turns it from a frustrating struggle against the enemy into a game to be played with other people who love doing the same thing. We need more things like this in all forms of competitive game.
Yeah it's honestly really surprising and amazing how much it legitimately works. Now I'm imagining League or Valorant with game face stuff lool
@@WhyDoimagining val with 10 funny faces all doing weird shit during the long ass loading screens is great
I can’t believe they fight on a street in street fighter, never would have guessed that
You always have to check for yourself. After all, Street Fighter 6 isn't even the 6th Street Fighter game, so half of the title is a lie already. How are people supposed to know the "street fighter" part is telling the truth???
like this but ironically unironically
@@WhyDoquestion everything
I actually thought you fought streets in that game
Thing is, if you had guessed you punch the actual street, I would also not be surprised. 'cos you fight everything from fridges to inanimate cars, so why not the actual ground?
That description of the fun part of fighting games made way too much sense
agreed, by the end I was like "yeah that just about covers everything, how tf"
at first I thought “oh it’s just a silly gag, he’s not actually gonna try to do a good job of explaining” but I was in awe of just how accurate his description truly felt
the only part he missed was that you're also simultaneously doing monkey island swordfighting
Slight nitpick: he forgot about the part where the second game of rock paper scissors is actually played with the rules in reverse
As a traditional fighter, this video was really cathartic. Alot of Hardcore FGC say stupid things like "all you need to draw people in are cool moves!" or "Simplified controls doesnt bring anyone in" or even the REALLY stupid "I dont need single-player content; I just play online" but when SF6, the biggest Fighting game IP out there, decides to try these things, it actually starts bringing people in. SF6 has done so much right even for Traditional fighters, and its great to see that its bringing in people from Smash too cause they did things like...tried to teach people how to play in a single player mode instead of just saying a wall of text in tutorial mode is good enough.
Also I concur with other people saying thats one of the best descriptions of fighter I've ever heard. And also Please put a recording feature in platform fighters. Holy crap. Even trying to play games from the 90's can be painful just cause you dont have it; it takes so much effort to find stuff otherwise.
Seriously. Fightcade mods in a real training mode for a bunch of fighters. Smash needs a real training mode so bad.
FGC fans will do anything but campaign for a comprehensive training mode and good matchmaking. What makes people not stick with fighting games is feeling like they don't know what they're doing and getting blown up every match by people with 4000 wins. Ask me how I know.
SFxT
MvC1
It's difficult to make a recording feature for Smash since any balance change can change things drastically so the replay won't work in newer patches due to it being input based. The solution is to slap a giant (this replay is in version x) and make actual video records rather than input records but Nintendo Online sucks
Imagine admitting you aren't capable of being anything other than mediocre while also being unironic about it and proud?
Hearing Smash players talk about SF like it's a foreign entity is hilarious
Kinda like SF players looking at Modern Control Zangief as a foreign entity
@@spiderturtle5292 TRUE
@@spiderturtle5292 that's not just a foreign entity, it's a god damn eldritch god
“…one of the easiest characters are ken and ryu from smash bros “
@@Robert-gn7ec Ah yes. Ken and Ryu Smash; THE Smash Brothers themselves.
This video is so cathartic. As someone who played Smash and got into traditional fighting games via Guilty Gear Strive, smash and other platform fighters are so behind in some areas. How has no platform fighter at least ATTEMPTED a super meter (besides smash meter that doesn’t count)
Playsation All Stars Battle Royale is a playform fighter with a super meter, it was kinda a banger. I picked sackboy and spammed fans and got cyberbullied
So true, and yet I think it sorta goes the other way too
Fraymakers has an assist meter, so that's close
Well, because they're Brawlers.
"Platform" and "Traditional" "Fighters" are new age terms, they used to just be Fighting Games and Brawlers before (This is not a dig at competitive Smash or me saying it doesn't require skill, please don't burn my house down).
Brawlers are basically a deconstruction of the Fighting Game genre for the sake of creativity and experimentation. They'll remove or add as many things as they want and generally prefer a more casual feel for the sake of attracting bigger audiences. They CAN be used as a bridge over into Fighting Games, though Fighting Games are far off from being a "Party Game" and are almost entirely about intrinsic skill, whereas with Smash you can still pop on 4-16 players, random items and goofy stages and have a blast.
Super Meters were never a thing mostly because Sakurai never viewed Smash as a Fighting Game and never went into it with that intent (Before anyone brings it up, yes, Sakurai DID call it a "Fighting Game".. as an apology after his own fans attacked him for referring to it as a "Party Game"). Sakurai is an old school arcade man and grew up doing what a lot of OG Fighting Game players did, which was hang out at arcades throwing quarters into machines for their turn at dethroning whoever was on a streak on Street Fighter or King of Fighters. Had he wanted to, he very easily could have made Smash more like Fighting Games, but he was invested in making a Brawler and Nintendo themselves did not want a polarizing game that would turn off half their audience, so Smash Bros it was.
The Meter isn't there for a reason, but it could totally be implemented. Some games like Playstation Allstars did, though its means of implementation didn't sit right with a lot of people (Metered Supers were the only way to kill opponents and the games devs were woefully underrepresented and under budgeted).
I've been thinking about making a platform fighter with a super meter mechanic, though. But it'll have to wait until I have the time and resources to make it.
Drive Impact is my favourite piece of game design ever; because the best (most satisfying) counter to Drive Impact is to Drive Impact BACK, meaning that new players naturally learn to hold on to it for the sicknasty counter animation and then start learning other mechanics of their own volition
It really is such a well-designed move. At a casual level it's just a big-ass move that's easy to input and ridiculously satisfying to land, but even at higher levels of play it retains importance as a reactable but high-reward option that affects decision making everywhere. They really nailed the design on it.
its very nice to see that when a fighting game actually has content it turns out that they're not that bad and now new people can enjoy it. it is also definitely fun to see them hate the moves everyone else has also hated for years
and i had no idea you could get checkmated into grabs in smash that's terrifying wtf
The checkmate thing straight up haunts me, it's relevant in so many matchups and I wish more people talked about it. Some characters can even checkmate you off of YOUR PARRY.
most infamous one is defiantly melee fox and falco's shine grab confirm, frame one move converters to a grab
It can happen in fighting games, it's what's called a tick throw (a throw as soon as the opponent exits blockstun), but it depends on the other player to set it up and on you to actually tech it, something you can't do in Smash.
@@NightGhost-qs6yw you can definitely escape shinegrab with buffer roll after the shine
@@monchete9934 The thing is, tick throws can be escaped. In Smash, however, you can literally be grabbed _during blockstun._ There is nothing you can do.
I love the caveman discovers fire energy this has, especially the training mode segment.
For whatever reason I never conceptualized modern controls as "Your damage sucks but you have the reaction time of a god" before but now I kinda want to mess around with them more
when the world needed him, he returned
Finally, someone else who understands that trying to use smash training mode is like trying to work out at the gym but your little brother keeps hitting you all the time. Imma go get street fighter now
The training room for SSBU is so lame that people had to rig their own Switches to make it somewhat decent...
It is nearly fucking 3am and I'm watching a video on Modern Controls on a game I already own. I play Classic Controls. There's no reason for me to watch this.. BUTT. The editing, the timing of jokes and all around entertainment makes me laugh my ass off and I want to share it with frieeends. This is easily one of my most favorite videos of SF6 to come out since it's launch. I love it, I love it so much, lawl.
Kintuse why u dedded on shotocord
I would offer Smash as a pretty good fighting game for Smash players, but I'd like to not get canceled by the rest of the fgc
"Street Fighter 6 has a lot of respect for the time that you do decide to put in."
THIS.
With that one sentence, you perfectly summarized our entire experience with SF6, and by juxtaposition, Smash. SF6 makes it the entire point of the game to teach you how to git gud and gives all the tools you'll need to do so. Smash gives you barebones training room, online eldritch horror experiences, the same "How to Play" video from over a decade ago, and broken characters they have no intention on fine-tuning.
One game cares about our experience and I thank SF6 for being it.
More serious fighting game players need to learn to fear, respect, and embrace the raw super punish. Historically that was the job of input-reading single-player boss fights, but now Modern players get to bring that fear to online players.
I mean, the Daigo Parry is always a thing you should keep in the back of your mind is technically possible.
Y’know now that you mention it, my FGC veteran friend was absolutely destroying me as Honda, and my solution to learn how to fight him at home was to play a Honda CPU over and over again.
The fact that going into training mode never even once crossed my mind shows just how much Smash I need to program out of my brain 💀
very happy you got to Ryu From Streets within a minute of the video
"Logitech gaming mouse, modern controls Luke" must be pure anathema to the classic/old school crowd.
This video is what I needed to finally let go of my Smash Player bias and accept that maybe another fighting game is worth paying attention to. Thanks Whydo
Guilty Gear is also a great game to play for any smash players looking to get into fighting games. It has some VERY easy to remember specials and every character has something like a universal anti air or trip setup. It’s a really easy game to pick up which can be good for someone struggling to learn something like Street Fighter or King of Fighters.
Strive was the closest traditional fighting game to really sucking me in before SF6, it's really cool. If it had World Tour quality single player content it'd be perfect and might've really converted me, but sadly the campaign is a literal 4 hour movie haha. I'm sure it's great for series fans but I was 100% the Victorian child being shown a Marvel movie there.
The tutorials were a major step forward however, and in terms of actual gameplay it's absolutely the first FG I'd recommend to my fellow Smash players after SF6.
I play the tall French woman and even she's my sleep paralysis demon.
5:44 I hate it when my opponent builds a wall that stops us from playing rps and tic tac toe and if I don’t want to tear down his pie, he’ll just win at rps more.

@@justanothermanontheinternetReally makes me not want the old dev team for the next game. I want a better and active Dev team that won't abandon us after dropping one more DLC character that could be extremely broken.
this might be the video that convinces me to get SF6

As a former smash player who has literally quit the game to watch ( I can't play the game yet unfortunately, soon HOPEFULLY) Street Fighter 6 since day 1, it was very funny seeing you talk about it and I agree with your points on Modern control; this game is for everyone, and glad everyone is crowding in the back alley to watch some Street Fights!
Btw, if I could play right now I am pretty sure my Cammy would be good enough to help with your Blanca problem, but for now just perfect parry, use a specific move like Sand Blast (I think), or drive rush after blocking the attack to close the gap and prevent more Blanca Ball spam
This video was my experience with dbfz. I love smash and probably always will, but god learning a fighting game like that is so refreshing and it just feels so satisfying to play
The reaction super thing is honestly something you'd see in a hidden boss battle or smth
HE IS BACK, finally :)
I WAS WORKING ON A COUPLE THINGS but now I am freed, I have been training Davinci Resolve in the mountains like Ryu so hopefully I can get a biweekly upload schedule soon?!

fun fact, metro city is actually just across the river from new york in street fighter. they both exist. oh and also the ex-mayor literally punched all the crime away.
I’ve been playing street fighter casually for a really long time, and in a way, I got started with modern controls. My first SF game was SF4 on the 3DS, and it had one-button specials. It wasn’t implemented nearly as thoughtfully, but without them I wouldn’t have gotten as into the game as I did.
I am proof that simplified control schemes pull in new players, AND I am proof that players will naturally move on from simplified control schemes when they want to unlock a game’s fullest potential (though I’m still casual trash)
For all the people who are getting into sf6, TRY BOTH, modern is nice but some people like classic more still, and try all the input methods you have (not gamecube controllers you dont have enough buttons) see whats nice to YOU, cuz thats what matters
You totally do have enough on a GameCube controller! The new “Simultaneous Input Assistance” Button allows you to use a GameCube controller perfectly fine!
@@lemoniscence i honestly forgot about that LMAO
I only bought this game because I like Luke's perfect animation. I can't stop playing him this game is cracked.

5:35 This is the best explanation of a fighting game I've ever seen and I just wanted to thank you for this before I steal it and use it to explain fighting games to all my friends.
You had me at the tic-tac-toe bit, and while I've seen a couple videos from the Garfield brothers, Lebron Simulator, and Item Breakers 1 videos, I started cracking up how you explained yourself as a cryptid and making SF veterans confused, god this is great writing.
21:23 That knock back is crazy!
I'd been playing fighting games all of my life, but the first one I got serious about learning was smash ultimate. After a couple of months of realizing how hellish that game was, I turned to Street Fighter V. It wasn't my first entry in the series, but it was the first one that I got serious with. I remember the pride of hitting silver and grinding hard to get higher and higher. With the release of Street Fighter 6, I'm so happy to see an influx of players joining in on the games I love so much. Truly the best in the series, hands down.
I've been so many more people playing SF6 from the smash community I'm hoping to see alot more crossovers in the future
I wish the other way around happened as well, although tbf smash online sucks ass so it shard to get involved without people IRL.
I HATE ONLINE IN SMASH. I hate how good SF6 players have it right now. Healthy competitive scene that's arguably getting bigger than Smash, way better online play, WAY better balancing (active Dev team), and so much more.
Bud sounds like a north sentinel island dweller finally figuring out how to use a phone and trying to teach the tribe how to use it
LMAOO I absolutely am! But I'm happy, a bunch of SF6-interested Smashers joined our Discord from this video, and me and my fellow isolated island dwellers are having a blast
I didn’t listen to anything I was distracted of how hilarious his character looks
Your analogy with the RPS, tic-tac-toe, exploding pie, and anti-pie forcefield was genuinely a genius allegory for the poke -> approach -> whiff punish -> poke triangle, skipping it with a jump, and anti-airing a jump. I don't know if you were specifically thinking about that concept but it works almost perfectly.
Was expecting a cursed Guy Fieri avatar here too ngl
talking about how spamming funny faces with the ken made you comrades in arms made me genuinely cry

as someone that plays traditional fighting games this video raised my blood pressure
This is my first street fighter, started on modern and soon after switched to classic, modern is a stupid handicap on skill
Of course it does.
Oh wait you're talking about modern controls not him
Yeah i agree modern controls sucks ASS. But i think its a neccessary evil bc of the BS new players have to go through to play a fighting game
Its so damn hsrd for me to invite people to play a fighting game because of how its inherently designed
My headcanon is that Metro City is Philadelphia
*sees the Statue of Liberty by the Mad Gear scrap heap.*
Yep, Philadelphia. 😁
this video is goated, I've also been a long time smash player and I'm getting interested on street fighter 6 after seeing some gameplay, now I'm really considering getting into it
I want a smash game with both crazy stuff like unblockable set-ups and huge disjoints, but also universal mechanics like staggering opponents when it crashes with a higher priority attack, or some reversal options you can do while in shield-stun
Litterally, Street Fighter 6 is great cause you can set unblockable set-ups and crazy projectiles, but they're not broken because of universal system mechanics that counteract them
This is why Smash will never be a real fighting game to me. It doesn't have this type of balancing and it gets very annoying. I honestly would play a new Smash game with a smaller roster (easier to learn MUs), better online, WAY better balancing, etc.
I will street fight on the streets in my drive impact on the street…thank you WhyDo
Amazing video. Gonna try out modern controls after this
18:49 Ryu definitely deserved to get hit by that UpAir
watching your character move around in anywhere is hilarious
I love it... this guy.. really made me see how good we have it.. some things i have been complaining for years just seems like a god send to smash players. Having smash players playing sf might be the best thing that happend this video gave me life just the humor alone..
Glad to hear you're enjoying the game man! hope it makes you try some other fighting games.
so glad the melee modding community is amazing and we get to use input recording on uncle punch
Not to mention ROLLBACK. And most of that stuff is coded in ASSEMBLY. Melee modders are simply built different.

the dunking on smash is the most cathartic thing ive watched this year
My one issue with traditional fighting games (as someone who's first fighting game was Tekken) is that it's impossible for me to remember moves and their inputs. I can grab a character, get the inputs in training mode pretty quick and then just forget it all the moment I got the menu. Even when I do remember the inputs, I'll forget them when I pit the game down for even a few days
See I went from marvel vs Capcom to smash as pretty much the only 2 fighting games I invested any time into, and I can say the 2 are honestly very similar, the only difference being that in mvc there are about 6 characters you can play if you want any chance of winning at all. The reason I stopped playing mvc is because one day I completely destroyed a controller because of getting spammed with morridoom by like every single person online in a row and decided it probably wasn't good for my health to keep playing.

It's a shame Killer Instinct (2013) didn't blow up more. It did very similar things to SF6 a decade before. Combo Assist is comparable to Modern in some ways, it's netcode was/is excellent, tons of fun single player modes that actually help learn the systems in a hands-on and contextually relevant way. There is also pretty much no need to lab combos for a beginner, since the system is more streamlined and fluid, with focus of on mind games and situational setups/follow ups, rather than raw execution or learning specific optimal combos.
Plus the characters are far cooler and more unique than in most foghting games, controls are super crisp and the sound desing is insane.
For anyone interested, the anniversary edition just dropped and there is still an active player base. I recommend getting it on Windows store/xbox pass for PC, larger player base with ranked crossplay on PC and Xbox.
It’s funny you made this because one of my best friends always loved smash more than any other fighting game but he tried the af6 demo once and fell in love. We play for hours whenever we’re in a custom room now, it’s amazing
I'm curious how many times you've tried to play other fighting games aside from Smash. I've tried quite a few times and never been able to get into it. SF6 does look like a lot of fun, though...
I tried:
SFV - enjoyed watching it, but it wasn't really for me. The netcode was also a bit wack and at the time the content was severely lacking
DBFZ - was fun with friends locally, I learned how to do combos and stuff, but online was still awful and I don't think the game explained how anime fighters work that well.
GG Xrd Rev 2 - got this to play with a friend and there is a LOT of stuff going on that wasn't explained to me, it's one of the best games to watch I think, but I pretty much had no idea where to even start to improve at it.
Strive - this one was actually pretty great, but I didn't like how the story mode was just a cutscene with 0 gameplay and it didn't quite succeed in pulling me in the same way SF6 managed to.
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - OH GOD OH F
Other than that, mostly meme fighters like Divekick/Footsies and some other anime fighters like Skullgirls that are prob good but I don't have the attention span to learn while getting combo'd for 30 seconds. SF6 just fit my personal brand of ADHD very well, and World Tour + the great training mode got me past that initial barrier where I'm actually having fun.
@@WhyDo You've tried a lot more than me and seem to have similar problems with the ones we both have played. Maybe it's from our mental link as Zachs.
I'll watch that Beginners Guide video and maybe give it a go. Thank you very much for the quick and cohesive reply. Keep up the great work.

While I haven't *played* Smash competitively, or even regularly, since Brawl, I have loved how much Modern controls has let my brain finally make the jump from SSBB to Street Fighter. I've played other FGs, including other SFs, but this is the first one since, again, Brawl that I've been able to actually *play* and dig into. It's been an absolute joy, and seeing this video pop up was very validating.
You hold your tongue about the GC controller though. Greatest controller ever made. If I could find an imitator with a full-sized RS instead of the dinky C-Stick I'd use it for all my non-D-Pad needs, so everything that isn't SF6.
I have many happy memories with GCC but MAN that thing hurts my hands, even with mods! Switched to Box and the hand pain went away. If you're able to use GCC without pain though, it IS the classic...
I've seen 3rd party switch pro controllers that are shaped like GC controllers except with a full size right stick
Sf6 feels so good to play. I didnt enjoy the precursors. It was sooo hard to get into them.
Now i say this as someone who plays tekken and melee which are hard to get into. But those have cool and unique charms. Sf6 just felt like chess.
Sf6 feels like monster hunter. In terms of its story. And thats a good thing.

It's interesting that you play Smash! with the flights stick. Despite not being a traditional fighter.
Final Fantasy on a Motorola flip phone sounds amazing
I played it as a kid, I was used to pokemon on my ds, and I was NOT ready for a game where you could run into 0 random encounters for a million steps or go 30 minutes hitting a different random encounter every single step. It taught me what truly evil RNG in a game looked like and made me hate JRPGs for about a decade.
But no microtransactions! So I give it 8/10

Ive never played a traditional fighting game in my life but when sf6 came out, one of my friends who had been playing the series for probably 15 years told me i should get it. It was honestly because of modern controls that i even gave the game a try... and i turned out to LOVE it. I dont have a ton of time to dedicate to the game and i think learning everything on classic controls wouldn't have been fun. So im very glad this modern control system is an option. It helps me to be competitive without giving me an advantage against the people who already know all the combos. It really levels the playing field in a way i don't think any game ever has before.

Dude, Game Face is a Soul Calibur 2 mechanic. The fact that it took 'til now for us to see it again is criminal!
I think a good example for how fighting games work is that it’s a lot like speed chess to you need to know what you’re opponent is going to do and think ahead and attack or defend depending on what they do it’s all about quick movements
About modern controls. I am really glad they put them in the game. But I banged my head against a wall learning inputs for a freaking fan game for like three weeks to learn them. So gosh dang it I'm playing classic controls!
Bro that whole fruit roll up analogy had me like....what??? 😂😂
Modern controls are cool cause they ease you into fighting games. I highly recommend switching to classic eventually tho cause, believe it or not, motion controls are one of the funniest parts of fighting games. These games are some of the most mechanically robust games out there and offer something no other genre can offer. Manually confirming a normal into a super on reaction will always be extremely satisfying. At least give it a solid chance, you might fall in love with them like lots of us have.
Also, motion controls are pretty universal to an extent and you can take this skill to almost any other 2d fighter. It's well worth the time to learn them
Haha, I specifically only use GC controllers for fighting games now. I've tried everything for the last 6 years to get into fighting games (8bitdo, PS4, XBS, FightStick) and I could never really get it until I just used a GC controller (with Gbros Adapter), and maximized the deadzones (so I never jump, or do diagonals accidentally). I'm definitely niche, but for me, I can do all the motion inputs I need and already have decades of muscle memory, and the most important thing is my fingers don't get blisters after 1 hour. Normally I wouldn't recommend an analogue stick for these games, but the othagonal gates and modified deadzones give me the same feedback as a stick! The fight stick was the second best for me, but with the large size (hard to travel with), and the lack of muscle memory, I just wanted something I knew would be reliable and could take a beating without hurting my hands. I enjoy the controller modding scene the GC controller has grown, and I only wish we could get a modern GC controller with an upgraded Dpad, all the shoulder buttons and stick clicks. Until then, it will stay my smash and fighting game controller.
I am absolutely terrified, but if it works for you with no pain, that's awesome. Personally the GCC has caused me so many headaches but hearing you explain it that way, I can ALMOST see it.
I def agree with modding though, modders are the only reason I could keep using GCC as long as I did. They're doing the lord's work
I've using a GCC as well but for basically everything everything since UMVC3/SSFIV and it's been quite good for me as well. The quality of the stick doesn't require a d-pad, you can easily map the dpad to the buttons the gcc doesn't have like L3/R3 for training mode options.
The button layout makes it difficult to press Y and B as well as X and B together but it's very easy to press anything together with A. It's not too difficult to come up with a good controls layout for it.
No way around how much the dpad sucks but the simple solution is to just not use it haha.
I still wonder why you mentioned Subspace Emissary twice at the start...
