I came over here and I typed in “machine gun Trey “ in the search bar and this came up. I’m sharing this video to prove a point that Trey is talented AF! Thank you for this! We are so fn lucky to live on this earth at the same time as the Phish from Vermont!
Atlanta, GA - 7/23/97...my first Phish show...they played a Ghost that is unparalleled in my mind...this one is pretty damn good and shows the live potential of the song...but, damn, I get chills thinking about that jam...

From what I can recall the Phoenix 97' show was considered to be the best ever version of Ghost..That was my first show when I was 17. I'm still looking for a copy..
The main reason people don't like Phish is that when we try to show them, like referring these sorts of videos or recordings, nothing interesting really happens in the first minute of it. It's really just too foreign for most people who think of music in the way they do about commercial products like Hollywood films. It was great to hear Trey defend the community (original) aspect of music when inducting Genesis. This kind of art isn't consumed or performed, but lived.
1997-11-17 Denver (Live Phish 11) has one of the best Ghosts ever - it goes into a really smooth ambient style jam driven by a beautiful chill bass line. 2003-08-03 (Limestone) (IT) has an excellent Ghost with that alternate rhythm, which is also great
Started a little funky "Penguin in Bondage" to me... I hear Zappa all the time. With a little more rhythm. Either way by 5:57, Trey stands alone amongst my favorite guitarist. More creativity than anyone else I've ever listened to. And a great ability to stand back and let everyone else play.
last comment was directed at jm :) you know it's about to get down-right nasty-dirty-tongue escaping good funk. Be what it is! and it's divine~ love the bassist gordon.............& btw not only can Trey hold a flame to any modern great.........so can paige & phishman! love it! (& prO-BAMA while we're at it)
@layladuane Yes, Derek Trucks has played with Trey a few times. He sat in with Phish for 'Possum' and 'Funky Bitch' on 7/7/1999. Then he played with the Trey Anastasio Band a few years later too.
It's on LivePhish. You can download Ghost .mp3 (free) and then line up the audio in your media player (iTunes) to 5:15:30 or so, it lines up very very good. It's within a couple miliseconds, so it'll be like a real theater with the delay. Makes my day
@goldenchopsticks I think it's actually the Digitech Whammy set to octave mode. You can hear him sweep up into the octave with the pedal at one point then back down a little later. Used this technique much in the 90's.
sweet, i cant believe u got a camera in the prague show. very, very nice stuff though. u r probably one of the two people who have video of this show. fuckin awesome!!
This shit is off the chain, y'all! Around 5:30 begins the Trey Maniachal Head Bob and by 6:00, omg. Someone mop me up off the floor cause I just melted. Trey+Languedoc=auditory ecstasy.
You have to give it up to the rest of the band for being able to hold it all down under that. Even though Trey is shredding balls, you still can feel all of their energy behind it.
I've have this tape. It's to bad it cuts short as it was about to >>> in to Cities. A few years back when first got my hands on this I lived on it for a month.
@MrMeddled How did they play an amazing Ghost on 4-5-96 when the song was debuted in 97? I know Phish is good, but they have not conquered time travel quite yet.
I wish that trey would throw a freak out like this every once in a while nowadays. I didnt really hear much of it at hampton but maybe as he begins to settle in again he will go nuts like this again.

Just....wow. Trey is freakishly talented, incredible guitar work!! Whole jam was 🔥
The delay loop produces a nice spacey feeling and then all hell breaks loose out of nowhere after a nice jam. Blissful chills all over

The 2nd set blew my mind! In all accounts, it was the phunkiest show I have seen in a long time.......
Still haven't heard anything as good as this!
trey has the best vibrato of any guitarist period, raw emotional release. WHat a jam... amazing
Nice...and one month later, 8/7/98 @ Walnut Creek one of most underrated Ghosts of all time was played.

grim, i think everyone here can agree that you are one of the funniest people on youtube. and i mean that in the most insulting way possible ;)
Trey at his best, you can tell cuz he's smiling practically the whole time. This is the epitome of musical virtuosity.
To the trained ear, this is what to live for.
love your thought process~ funkin love phish
From what I can recall the Phoenix 97' show was considered to be the best ever version of Ghost..That was my first show when I was 17. I'm still looking for a copy..
i've never seen trey get so into it before.
pretty incredible.
Its so fun to watch trey just raging it and the look on his face when he knows he's melting faces.
When Trey tears it up like that it makes me see colors!!!

Unreal! What a great jam!
AT 4:12 Trey knows how he effects those of us in the know. He knows what those sounds do and that is what makes him a master of that instrument.
:) Absolutely
the 6th minute of this video is especially mindblowing.
best i ever heard or seen trey jam as hard as this
this made my weekend, thanks!
Best Ghost jam EVER!!!!
During the worst moments of the middle of a work week, I'll throw on the headphones at my desk and just take this in for ten minutes. Therapy.
great footage and a total shredfest.
Trey absolutely shreds this. Would've been incredible to be in that crowd.
Sick!!! Love it . Thanx!!!
This show is being released on March 25, 2008 as part of the Live Phish Downloads series.
this vid is still the best. everytime i watch it, i puke.
that really went up a notch quick....
Hampton '09 is going to be the best party of our lives!
haha, I love when Trey just goes crazy during a jam, so fun
dude... thank you
I have watched this video too many times to count and Trey's bit from 4:00 to 4:30 is just crazy good.

PSSSSHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! Trey's rippin' while the foundation is and was always so perfect... I thnk my pupils just dialated for like 10 minutes...
Heat. Pure and simple.
Trey plays like Trey... and they charge right into this one. brilliant!
unbelievable! great stuff here
totally worth it
agreed...this is my favorite 'ghost'
Look at trey, he just knows he's a fuckin' boss the way he makes the crowd go crazy with his smooth fiddles of the guitar.
Started a little funky "Penguin in Bondage" to me... I hear Zappa all the time. With a little more rhythm. Either way by 5:57, Trey stands alone amongst my favorite guitarist. More creativity than anyone else I've ever listened to. And a great ability to stand back and let everyone else play.
its true I never realize. Pat's lyricism is definitely evoked here
Damn, don't think I've ever heard this Ghost. Sick version.

Yep, definitely have to have dope to enjoy very much of this...

Only jams from 1997-2000 really have a lot of 'siren' loops.
Fun times...the good (not so) old days!
sweet, i cant believe u got a camera in the prague show. very, very nice stuff though. u r probably one of the two people who have video of this show. fuckin awesome!!
just so good

This is sooo sickkk

I'm seeing them June in Pittsburgh YESSS
agreed. that show is fantastic, and features a really good jam off of Drowned
This is IT!
this grimdeath guy can't be serious. Anyways i think i would have left the cosmos if I had been at this phish show at that moment. Trey is THE man
intense jam with a sweet start/stop at the end. good stuff, especially at 5:54 in when trey hops. He seems to like hoppy things...
This isn't the Ghost, It is the Haunting Sounds Of Phish baby~
where the hell did this version of trey go? this is the trey we all know and love. I want him back damn it!
how the fuck his glasses not fall off
Magnets
Woooow. Face= melted..
This is a sick jam. Trey and his whammy tear it up. It's funny reading youtube comments too, huh?
This is Rock n' Roll!!!!
I agree. 06/18/2009 Tube. Epic for sure
This is machine gun Trey at his most fierce; tongue out, head thrashing, monster stomping shred session.
very nice. trey was rocking.
Phish tour dates on their website. 3 day run at Hamton in March!! WOOOO see you there!
I've have this tape. It's to bad it cuts short as it was about to >>> in to Cities. A few years back when first got my hands on this I lived on it for a month.
Best Ghost EVER!
Also best TWEEZER!
ROCK STAR TREY!!
HELLA SICK
@MrMeddled

love his tone from 98
I wish that trey would throw a freak out like this every once in a while nowadays. I didnt really hear much of it at hampton but maybe as he begins to settle in again he will go nuts like this again.
sometimes when trey jams i imagine him laughing at all the silly kids commenting like this! :)
