I've seen some good Number Lines. Festival (you were) 8 and ( I was) Superball 9 come to mind. The Dayton one last fall was great as well! I missed out on Magnaball. It sold out before I got a ticket and I was pissed. I've always felt one of the greatest things about Phish festivals is that they don't sell out, but that one did. Looking forward to Mondegreen.
I fucking love Trey's soloing style. Very vocal but you can hear that he's got an amazing ear, especially on some of his written solos like the one on Billy Breathes
Saw Phish over 150 times and that's the one song I have never heard live. I always heard he had trouble with that solo live and that's why it's rarely played. Although he plays much harder solos regularly in my opinion.
Wow, talk about following the chords and some CAGED soloing going on.. no wonder they get into these 8 minute jazz-odysee solos, such a fun and simple progression. Like a blank pallet ready to be painted.
Jimmy herring, Jerry Garcia , trey Anastácio. Derek trucks, warren Haynes . Jam bands are magical . I've found those bands too late in my life. As time passing the more I love them
TY for all the hard work. If you guys could keep adding the backing chords to the measures that would be great. You did it on that red surfboard video. Seemed like a nice way to incorporate some ear training in. TY
There are a few points (3:35) for example where he flicks over to his bridge pickup for a brief moment while sustaining a note then flips back to neck, any chance you could elaborate on why? I've heard the bridge pickup usually has a bit louder output than neck, is it for that little bit of extra volume?
Trey flips his pickups back and forth about 300 times per song. Watch any extended video of him playing and you’ll see his hand constantly flipping that switch. He knows exactly what tone he’s looking for and when.
His solo on Limb By Limb from The Story of the Ghost is a HUGE lesson in playing through changes and locking in rhythmically really tightly. I love Trey's playing even if the fan base is overwhelming a bit. ua-cam.com/video/-ouWKZapvfo/v-deo.html About 2 minutes and 20 seconds in.
@@j.kyronhanson5644 This is why I won't go to any of their shows. A couple of my buddies are complete Phisheads and that's all they talk about and trade tapes and all that crap. I don't care about that, I just want to hear them play some music without the weird hippie drama BS.
@@tonepoet the crowd at shows is way more fun than most crowds. The bitterness only exists online. I say this with love; as someone who enjoys music, please please don’t let the fans keep you from seeing phish while they’re still around. I’ve seen hundreds of bands but there’s nothing like phish and there never will be.
It's a Languedoc, specifically his 5th, The Ocelot. Impossible to get hold of, go for huge money if any ever come up for sale. There's a well known copy that used to have a pretty bad reputation for stupidly long delays, issues with final instruments etc. that's best avoided.
Most of his best stuff is not in this shoter format, but if you want some nice studio trey to check out, check out the song Miss You or Waiting all night from Big Boat or Billy Breathes from Billy Breathes for really nice soloing from Trey.
For any one interested in how to get the jam band sound , look into modes, mixolydian is the most common rock mode, it's how these type of bands operate
So I'm on a mission to play every mode in every key as a guitarist and organ player. I think Trey is using a host of compositional tricks outside of playing the mixolydian mode to craft his and Phish's sound. How Phish changes keys sounds interesting to me, as do the rhythms and their changes.
Ha another quick story. Went out to run an errand. But something told me to turn around and go home. On the way I see a guy standing there lost. I had just seen Trey on the cover of a guitar mag. This is quite awhile ago. I couldn’t tell for sure but I was pretty sure it was him. I asked him if he needed help. He did. I told him how to get there. Again, pointed to a different guitar tshirt. He said they were playing that night. I think he could tell I’m not a major fan. He thanked me and shook my hand and we went in our way. Strange coincidence because I just had this feeling to turn back. Still it’s a cool Phish story to me.
i’ve always wondered why jam bands are hated, can someone please explain? i’ve never liked the grateful dead, but never enough to write off the entire genre. i freaking love phish tho
I don't know? Sounds kind of "Phishy" to me? Sounds more like one of Jerry Garcia's students! With a little touch of Duane Allman to boot! A sweet sort of southern blues ?
Not sure that the term ‘banal’ is accurate here. While this might not be to your taste musically, the skill and thought behind the improv is undeniable. Based on other things I’ve heard from Phish and Anastasio, it is a bit pedestrian but that might be what he was aiming at

I despise most jam bands, but Trey Anastasio, and Warren Haynes hold a special place in my heart.
How about Jerry?

Levi! Thank you! I love jam bands they are The Best! Trey is great
Thank you!
Thanks!!! This is awesome
you should do a transcription of 1994-era Trey.
I’ve always said that Trey in 94-96 was better at guitar than MJ in 94-96 was at basketball!

I'm a big Trey (and Phish) fan, and I can barely tolerate the rest of the fan base - especially as they come across online. Uggh.

Masters of the art of banal improvisation, no note is ever too interesting or exciting, just perpetual semi-resolutions
