You can kill off a character in a good story without tying every loose end in a neat little bow. Sometimes a character failing to fulfil their goals or lacking closure makes for a more impactful story
AoT Spoiler: Like Erwin's death, where he doesn't fulfill his dream of learning the truth of the world. He was a 'slave' to that dream of his, and through death, he was liberated from the shackles of his dream.
agreed, a death that doesn't meet any of these criteria, when written well, is really good at inducing feelings of *despair* in my opinion. in reality, people die all the time before getting closure where they want/need it, rarely on their own terms. this is even truer for people who die fighting others...
Honestly imagine a world where Fox went with the decision to use Juggernaut instead of Quicksilver for the Magneto prison escape. We would have lost the "time in the bottle" bit but how different both the Xmen universe and MCU would have been

Not a single person there left that room without shedding a tear, especially during Tony's death. It was probably my best cinematic experience yet. What would you say was the best character death?
As usual, I use the example of Into The Spider Verse as my bar for excellence. Peter Parker dying at the start to provide a clear motivation to miles, then uncle Aaron doing the same, also adding that his death caused Miles' dad to make the crucial reconnection with him that allowed him to control his powers. These deaths matter. In the same vein as how sex and violence shouldn't be used superfluously, death shouldn't either.
@@firstnamelastname5048 you do realize that ruining the goal of Terminator 2 was literally the point, right? It’s supposed to be the reason why another “skynet” future is made.
Yeah but he’s tasking about Stories mit real life. We like stories bc they give frame and meaning to a confusing world. If I wanted realistic I would be watching nonfiction
Yeah, what kind of bothers me about Tony's death (really Endgame as a whole) is how much it goes for big, cathartic moments over what actually makes sense. For example, Natasha also sacrificed her life to save the world. She gave just as much as Tony, but you wouldn't know it because she doesn't have the big, elaborate funeral where everyone feels sad for her. And it's easy, even understandable, to see why: The MCU was going for a tone of "This all started with Iron Man, so we're seeing an end of an era" & they didn't want that diluted. But does that actually make it right? Tony's death glosses over a lot to make him look like the biggest hero, & in the next movie we're going to see yet another problem caused by Tony's troubling private surveillance & weapons systems. True, he made the sacrifice play, but his legacy outside of that is, at best, a lot more complicated than the movie treats it. But the movie scene is designed to "hit people in the feels," not be realistic, fair to the characters, or explore themes. I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, but the artificial, commercial-like way the MCU treats big, emotional moments kinda bugs me sometimes. Maybe I'm kind of getting away from the point. I get that Quicksilver's death wasn't the best executed, but what Whedon was going for wasn't bad in principle. If you rewatch the movie, there's a clear attempt to get people to like the character so they really feel the tragedy when he dies. And it's clear he can dodge bullets, yes, but he's not in a situation where he needs to dodge bullets, others are being shot & he can't get to them in time while still escaping himself. This is not only shocking, it shows Quicksilver's character and becomes something to build off of for Wanda. To quote another UA-camr (to the best of my memory), "Death scenes aren't impactfull because look how sad everyone is, that makes me feel sad, it's because that character is now gone, any arc they were going through is suddenly cut short, and the survivors are left to pick up the pieces." This is, in principle if not execution, what Whedon was trying to do. With Tony, so far it's about 98% "look how sad this is!" There was kind of a subplot about Spider-Man maybe taking on his mantle, but that was more to introduce the movie's MacGuffin.
@@TheLithp i read the comment and i fully agree, but it sucks that Wanda NEVER EVER speaks about his existence in the movies afterwards again. She just forgets about him.

A core value of Jonathan and Martha Kent is that they encourage Clark to use his powers to help people. But in this movie Jonathan tells Clark that he should have left those children die as oppose to reveal his powers. Can you picture aunt may or Alfred saying that to Peter or Bruce?
@@priyanshuranjan3088 yes actually in rami’s Spider-Man aunt may literally looks Peter in the face and says, “You don’t owe the world a damn thing, you don’t HAVE to be or HAVE TO DO anything” this was the same message Pa Kent was trying to convey, but it didn’t land as well, because it was a little too gray.

@@wilhemalmodovar8910 dude I get your point but you didn't get mine. Mr Kent don't want to reveal the real identity of his son to the world because this could be really dangerous for him and we all know a father cares for their child at any cost but he should see those kids with the same perspective. If all of them had died that day then that would have been Jonathan's biggest mistake in his life as a father of his son because his son had learnt the lesson that no matter what the situation is, he shouldn't reveal his real identity to the world then how could he can be superman. The greatest hope of mankind. Best Superman stories focus on his humanity which makes us like him. He was raised on earth. He was raised by humans. And his full life of experience was of a human. He is a human first. A human who just so happens to be an alien too. Aunt may never meant to Peter that if anybody is dying he shouldn't save them. It was more about that Peter should concentrate on his own life as things were very bad for him. And Alfred said those words to Bruce because he knows the condition of Bruce that time. and The Gotham needs Batman to live for the next day. Batman's core value is that he values life above anything else because his world was shattered by a random act of violence And he wants to prevent anyone feeling that pain which he felt that day. You are free to say anything but imo the whole father son relationship of Jonathan and Clark never worked for me in man of steel. And sorry for my bad English.

He died because Fox was using Quicksilver in X-Men and they didn’t want to compete with the same character so he was killed off. Not a lot of thought was put into it.
If Disney wanted those rights they could've gotten them, hell, they have them now. The reason they didn't want them is that Joss Whedon wanted to make the movie more "impactful" by killing a character and Quicksilver was the easiest.
@@cyclone313 I never said I thought it was a simple process, all I mean is that for a company like Disney getting more movie rights for a character wouldn't be out of the question if they actually wanted to keep him around.
@@cyclone313 They have spidey, for now, if Disney can convince a big company like Sony to temporarily give the rights to probably the biggest brand that company holds (into the spider-verse and venom show that sony is very interested in the Spidey universe, I mean even the negotiation between Disney and sony were lengthy), they could have gotten the Quicksilver rights as well
When I first saw Iron Man as a kid he was immediately my favorite. I fell in love with the MCU and followed his journey through every movie and when it finally came to seeing his end, I didn’t want it to happen but it felt right.
I think we can all agree that Iron Man is the trademark for how to kill a superhero, which leaves the character with a just ending in the sense of the character arc and leaves the viewers satisfied.
Killing a character with an unfinished arc could also work. It also makes a feeling, usually more realistic than a well grown and finished one. Perhaps it isn't satisfying to see your favourite character to die before they could achieve something, before they save the girl/world and anything between. But don't tell me you don't know someone who could not finish their big life goals. Someone who didn't fulfill THE DREAM. it isn't satisfying but it is realistic. But of course, maybe this was the perfect death in this franchise which targets a certain audience.
This is such a great video. I love Iron Man and RDJ nailed the role. This takes me back to the first Avengers movie. Cap: "You're not the kind of guy to lay on the wire." Tony: "I would find a way to cut the wire."

Tony is always egotistical, but by the end of the first movie, he's already learned and grown so much. The more flawed Tony is at the beginning, the more potential for growth he has, that's just how writing and storytelling work, my friend. He needs to have those flaws so people can identify with his journey.
I got hooked to the mcu from the time i was a little boy and i watched iron man. Whenever i saw Roberts character on screen, it filled me with joy, it made me remember the good memories of my childhood, but seeing Iron man die in the theatre, it made me feel empty, it made me feel like i lost a close friend of mine. @@spectralquill1810 avengers assemble was in the comics way before the mcu so I'm saying that it wasnt a line that came out of the mcu rather it was just something they used in the mcu
"If you're going to kill a character, the last thing you want to do is kill a character who hasn't completed their journey, or better yet leaves behind unanswerable questions" I disagree with this sentiment entirely because such a claim directly asserts that there is only one way you should write when writing is an expression of an individual's own character, journey, personality, and experiences. If someone wanted to write a story around say, the death of a loved one who left behind a lot of unanswered questions and how the characters in the story deal with answering those questions for themselves, then that can be good. Tony Stark's death is a different beast because his death is supposed to be a glorious one that celebrates the character and completes his character arc. But the failure to do that isn't a failure in writing. A character's purpose is to the narrative, and their death only needs to do what's necessary to inform that narrative in relation to the author's motive. That isn't to say that deliberate writing decisions are always good ones, but to argue that leaving loose ends with a character death is something that should be avoided is to misunderstand writing.
Also....I think there is value in killing a character when it seems like they are right in the midst of their journey. People knock 'shock value'.....but death in reality doesn't always happen at meaningful times. Sometimes it comes out of nowhere when you are in mid-sentence. I think there is a harsh, brutal realism to THAT type of killing a character. It doesn't always get to complete their journey and reflect their values and mean something....sometimes people randomly get murdered and leave a lot of unfinished business and an incomplete journey.
@@ChrisPeteG And that can serve to create a strong narrative when handled properly. When a loved one dies with unresolved conflicts, that can serve to create a compelling story for those involved.
He meant when the story or other characters’ arcs aren’t about answering those questions, or completing their journey in their honor. It’s like if you silently crushed an important character with a car in the background and then the credits start rolling, or ends the book or series there.
Comparing any aspect of Iron Man & Quicksilver is very unbalanced in the first place. You'd be better off comparing Iron Man's death to Superman's or Quicksilver's death to the Ancient One's.
Quick Silvers death felt meaningless but to be fair most deaths in general are meaningless most people don't get last words or even know they just died and some deaths are too long some people wait years or months to just die slowly
Quicksilver’s death wasn’t just nothing. It was for setting up Wanda’s entire character. One of her biggest character points is that she has lost everything. They killed Pietro to help drive that plot forward.

This honestly makes me worried about how they're going to treat Black Panther's death in 2. Because if they aren't going to recast they will probably kill him offscreen or something then have some half baked funeral. That's my worry at least. I honestly wish they would recast because they could really do so much for T'Challa's character. Like he's one of Reed Richards best friends so I allways thought he would show up in a Fantastic 4 movie or something.
they'll probably use deepfake or something similar, and I suppose kill him onscreen. With, I suppose again, a new Black Panther taking his place at the end of the movie
@@jay7tennis it's really not all that disrespectful. Recasting isn't dishonoring Chadwicks legacy. The man had done tons of amazing movies. An actor is more then the character he played and a character is more than the actor who played him. It would be more disrespectful if they recasted while he was still alive. Like for instant recasting Johnny Depp from the Amazing Beast movie.
@@siothio while I agree that an actor is more than the characters they play I disagree that the characters are more than the actors who play them. In movies and shows, the characters are given life THROUGH the actors who portray them. Seeing another person in the character portrayed by Boseman would in some ways feel like a whole other character. Each actor brings something different to the characters they portray. It would be best to not let a new actor take away (for lack of better words) from what Boseman did for and in Black Panther. It’s best to let the character die with the one who portrayed him both for the immersion of the story and the legacy of the man.

i personally feel like tonys best moment was in that squabble with cap "take off that suit and who are you?" "a genius, billionare playboy" "everything special about you came from a bottle", a quote that i feel really sets tony apart from literally almost every other avenger who was just gifted theit incredible strength, tony built his strength, tony really earned and worked for it, captain had his powers injected, thor was born with his powers, scarley witch, vision, black panther, captain marvel, were all just handed powers
It would be hard to choose between Tony or Natasha. They both have had an amazing evolution and personal story arc in their own right. I would even go as far to say that Natasha's death was a better on-screen moment. She found a family, from a spy to leading the Avengers, and to give it all up, for the mission. To bring everyone back.
One of the greatest movie deaths in my opinion follows this pattern. It’s Merlin, Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The whole movie was leading up to that and it was an emotional moment for Eggsy, Harry and the audience who saw the first movie. I cry even when I think about it.
honestly, for me the most emotional death in the MCU has to be Yondu's in Guardians vol. 2. The moment itself, showing how much Yondu truly cares for Peter and how he was his real father, not Ego, then Peter's speech reaffirming that, and then finally the Ravagers coming to pay their respects... I don't think I've watched that movie a single time without crying. Yondu didn't go out saving the entire world like Tony did, and the whole world didn't mourn him after he died, but he sacrificed himself for the sake of his family, and I think it's just as resonant as Tony's death (if not even more so)
The irony is that the Endgame "And I am Iron Man" wasn't in the original script; Tony just snapped his fingers without a word. It was later suggested, in post-production, by one of the film editors that Tony needed a comeback line to Thanos' "I am inevitable" and that it had to be "I am Iron Man". That impressed the Russos so much that they brought back RDJ specifically to reshoot that scene with that line. And that made all the difference.
RIP Joyce. No fancy monsters. No villanous creeps that were played as comic relief for several episodes before doing the unthinkable. Just the mundane passing of a beloved character and those feeling of helplessness and loss.
Tony Starks death to me is awful to me. He doesn’t get to raise his daughter, doesn’t get to mentor his adopted son, fully repair his relationship with Cap, tons of loose ends.
Go to theaters is the best for a superhero movie because of how loud it gets at the best parts with everyone being hyped I can’t wait for theaters to go to normal for that reason
I agree with most of the video. Great video actually! ^^ Though I can’t believe you said “Other franchises have troubles making character deaths matter” and then show Game of Thrones. (I’m talking about the good GoT, the seasons with Mr Martin) In my opinion Game of Thrones handles exceptionally deaths. Every death of a main character has weight and changes everyone’s fates. They matter AND are memorable. To name three examples: Ned Stark, Khal Drogo, Oberyn Martell... No, a fourth: even the baker’s boy’s death sets Arya in a path of revenge and hate against the Lannisters.
I love how the whole world reacted to Tony’s death in contrast to Natasha. Nobody knew her, but all the people that mattered to her reacted, and that all she would need. Tony was a celebrity, a famous billionaire that will go down in history as their savior. Of course there is a huge difference between the ways these two are mourned, and it’s more meaningful than whatever people are all saying: ‘Natasha deserved more.’ She doesn’t care guys. She only cares about her family and doesn’t need any recognition of the world. It wouldn’t make sense, she’s a spy for goodness sake. It’s meaningful
@@tristanearhart6040 it did add some value to it but that doesn't change that it was a waste, even if they still killed him off it coulda been done much better than the guy faster than literally everything on screen, running laps around superhumans and lasers, gets lit up with bullets lol.

@@PeterGriffin11 I'll give you Mufasa. It's a pretty good death scene, very powerful and meaningful. It's very different from Tony's though, as Mufasa's death is the turning point of the movie, while Tony's is the conclusion. But both are worth mentionning. Bambi's mom dies off-screen. And you neither see her die, nor the body, she's just gone. Which is still pretty powerful of course, but doesn't fit in the category. And I have not seen I Am Legend, so I cannot comment on it.
Quicksilver death meant a ton. It motivated scarlet witch to almost rip Thanos apart all by her little self, and was a ton of leverage for Wanda vision too
Did you mean to say Phase 4? And by now, WandaVision has cleared out the fact that Evan Peters' Quicksilver was NOT ATJ Quicksilver nor was he ever meant to be a replacement or recast. We don't even know if Evan Peters is still reprising his version of Quicksilver in the MCU or he has been hired to play a completely different character. But I'm glad ATJ Quicksilver is still canon and I hope they come up with a way to bring him back (with all this multiverse and time travel themes already being established in the MCU.)
When IRONHEART revives Tony as her "Jarvis", and then gives the Tony AI the "Vision" treatment, I look forward to seeing your "This is How You Revive A Superhero" video.
One of the best deaths is Dinobot in Beast Wars - planned long in advance by the creative team because they didn't want executive decisions to remove existing characters cause another rushed death to be written in.
The funny thing is, that the Iron Man example is the text book definition of how to kill a character. And it's the exact opposite of what George R. R. Martin does in Game of Thrones. This is why Iron Man's death leaves us somber, but at peace, but Ned Stark's or Rob Stark's death leaves the audience with the gut wrenching feeling. Tony's arc was finished, but this means we as the audience expect the death. Ned and Rob on the other hand have been taken from the middle of their live, it's way closer to reality and therefore hits so much harder.
and then we find out uldren was swayed by a wish-dragon controlled by a hive god of deception that took control of a hidden city. The forsaken story was lit.
Also, they made it matter even when he was gone, look at Spiderman Far from Home, they continued to discuss Tony's Legacy in Peter. As for quicksilver, I've heard some rumors of his actor returning. So maybe he'll become a character who we end up caring about, because he's gotten more time.
The reason tony’s death sticks out is because of his entire arc throughout the mcu has been redemption. He started this saga as a villain and since then he’s been taking step after step to repent for his sins. And then he saved everyone and that’s when he truly earned redemption.
One more thing about Tony’s death that is meaningful is how he was the most likely to die, being a regular human as you put. But Tony wasn’t murdered or killed in battle as one might expect of a regular person amongst gods, but rather it was death thru his sacrifice of his fragile humanity.
Just bc u can dodge handgun bullets doesnt mean u can dodge minigun bullets. Some YT(gubz i think) did the math and doing what Pietro did that caused his death would require like MACH 2 speed.
I would like to hear your take on how Black Widow's death was treated in Endgame. What went right, what went wrong, and what could have been done better.
I personally don’t think thy should have make Endgame I like that they all lost and would have been more interested in how they would continue to live after Thanos had completed his mission.
@@CodysCanvas she is only going to be in that black widow film and thats it for the time being. Its obvious the only reason they have that film is so they can introduce some stupid plotline like how black widow in endgame wasnt actually her and was someone using that face changing mask from the winter soldier or how the ending of black widow links with nick fury who has randomly done something major
I didn’t look at it that way. I looked at the rest of the movie, the final fight, to be for black widow. They were fighting to make black widows death worth it. As the Banner said, he tried to bring her back, but he couldn’t. They saved the world but lost a friend.
@@Protosilver97 it would have been fine but they just acted like she had no family or that noone except the main avengers knew her. It's most likely because they are doing something in black widow relating to it all, it's most likely that she's not actually dead
The death of Cedric in Harry Potter was annoying in the book. It was sort of off screen and not made a big deal of. In the movie his father is screaming “My boy! You killed my boy!” Absolutely heart breaking.
It's just common sense to treat a character with respect. Even if they don't die, treat them with the same respect you would treat a real life hero. I love your point about how death should be an expression of the character who dies. It always makes the death feel meaningful. And not all of Tony's story was tied up - his daughter was left fatherless. You knew that he really cared about her because they showed that early in the film, and it gives his death even more depth because you know he actually had something to lose. A sacrifice is not a sacrifice unless you are giving up something you truly want/need.

As a counter point, they killed off John Connor in the first five minutes of the latest Terminator movie, and that was just plain awful.
@@CrowbornChaos literally ruins the point of terminator 2 saving him , I just ignore everything after judgement day
@@firstnamelastname5048 you do realize that ruining the goal of Terminator 2 was literally the point, right? It’s supposed to be the reason why another “skynet” future is made.
Yes, this. Character doesn't have to be devoid of loose ends to make the audience feel, it just has to be meaningful
As the best handling of violence in a hero story, Invincible takes the cake.
Not everyone completes their "arc" when they die, death comes suddenly and unexpectedly so it feels more realistic when there isn't a goodbye
She just forgets about him.
thats why i admire invincible
Thats one thing I loved about GOT. (SPOILERS IF YOU LIVE UNDER A ROCK) Catlyn and Rob starks (for example) story didn't feel 'done'. They didn't win the war, didn't reunite with their family... They just were killed.
Jonathan kent's death in 'man of steel': that is NOT how to kill a character. That's just suicide
And then it turned out the world was okay with Superman and was sad when he died, so Pa Kent was wrong the whlle time and died for no reason.
@@priyanshuranjan3088 also on more than one occasion alfred has told Bruce to let things be. Let them die. We can’t save them all, and you’re in no condition to save anyone. Yes these few will die, but you will live to fight another day.

"If you're going to kill a character, the last thing you want to do is kill a character who hasn't completed their journey, or better yet leaves behind unanswerable questions"
I disagree with this sentiment entirely because such a claim directly asserts that there is only one way you should write when writing is an expression of an individual's own character, journey, personality, and experiences.
@@ChrisPeteG
And that can serve to create a strong narrative when handled properly. When a loved one dies with unresolved conflicts, that can serve to create a compelling story for those involved.

@@siothio while I agree that an actor is more than the characters they play I disagree that the characters are more than the actors who play them. The moment itself, showing how much Yondu truly cares for Peter and how he was his real father, not Ego, then Peter's speech reaffirming that, and then finally the Ravagers coming to pay their respects... I don't think I've watched that movie a single time without crying. Yondu didn't go out saving the entire world like Tony did, and the whole world didn't mourn him after he died, but he sacrificed himself for the sake of his family, and I think it's just as resonant as Tony's death (if not even more so)
Steve’s shield is vibranium.
Hawkeye’s shield is Quicksilver.
Okay but we cannot deny how destroyed Tony looked when Peter turned into dust
The irony is that the Endgame "And I am Iron Man" wasn't in the original script; Tony just snapped his fingers without a word. It was later suggested, in post-production, by one of the film editors that Tony needed a comeback line to Thanos' "I am inevitable" and that it had to be "I am Iron Man". That impressed the Russos so much that they brought back RDJ specifically to reshoot that scene with that line. And that made all the difference.

When IRONHEART revives Tony as her "Jarvis", and then gives the Tony AI the "Vision" treatment, I look forward to seeing your "This is How You Revive A Superhero" video.
Pls marvel don't let that happen
Quicksilvers death lead up to the events of wandavision imho
One of the best deaths is Dinobot in Beast Wars - planned long in advance by the creative team because they didn't want executive decisions to remove existing characters cause another rushed death to be written in.
Real reason why MCU quicksilver couldn't last forever Because Fox didn't want to play nice

Similarly to Cayde 6’s death in destiny 2. He dies by being cade, and making an insult at his attackers expense.
and then we find out uldren was swayed by a wish-dragon controlled by a hive god of deception that took control of a hidden city. The forsaken story was lit.
Characters death in Marvel movies are always emotional. Even Yinsen death in Iron Man made my eyes watery.
Also, they made it matter even when he was gone, look at Spiderman Far from Home, they continued to discuss Tony's Legacy in Peter.
As for quicksilver, I've heard some rumors of his actor returning. So maybe he'll become a character who we end up caring about, because he's gotten more time.
Quicksilver's death was actually pretty dumb. I mean that how can, a person who runs at the speed of light, be dead by BULLETS?!
I grew up with Iron man I shed a couple tears at the theater
The reason tony’s death sticks out is because of his entire arc throughout the mcu has been redemption. He started this saga as a villain and since then he’s been taking step after step to repent for his sins. And then he saved everyone and that’s when he truly earned redemption.
Tony's death was the first time I ever cried in a movie theatre
One more thing about Tony’s death that is meaningful is how he was the most likely to die, being a regular human as you put. But Tony wasn’t murdered or killed in battle as one might expect of a regular person amongst gods, but rather it was death thru his sacrifice of his fragile humanity.
UA-cam really making you work for this video.
Ceasar's death from the recent planet of the apes franchise was perfect too! It's got all the points down perfect
According to me Iron man's, Logan's and Merlin's death were one of the most emotional moments of their respective franchises.
Tony Stark should have been vaporized as soon as he held all the Infinity stones or even died instantly when he did the snap.
The Boys liked that title
I personally don’t think thy should have make Endgame I like that they all lost and would have been more interested in how they would continue to live after Thanos had completed his mission.
Who else was pissed by how they belittled and almost ignored Black Widow's death?? She didn't get even half of that 😩😩😩
@@CodysCanvas she is only going to be in that black widow film and thats it for the time being.
I remember that was going to happen, but it wasn't included because two funerals would be a lot or something like that.
“Is Tony’s death the best on-screen death of all time? No.” I’m sorry, I think you meant “yes”
