Morrowind did what no Bethesda game since has done and that is not put a sense of urgency to the MQ,you drop off the package and Caius tells you to piss off and play the game before doing the MQ, no urgent drama right out of the gate where you have to ignore a Daedric Prince or world eater. Then there are the level requirements before advancing,it gave me a real sense of progression for my character.

I remember when I was young, we got our first computer, we got Serious Sam and Duke Nukem and this blank CD case with the morrowind CD. I honestly thought it was a CD for the graphics card for a year or so, so I never put it in. Then one afternoon I was bored, chucked it in and oh man oh man, I ran to my sister and made her watch, and she watched me play for a few hours then she played. It was so exciting!
Fast forward a few months and it was all I was talking about in grade 5, This weird game that no one knew about that i thought was the greatest thing on earth.
I went to a school friends birthday party and bought a copy for him as a present, he didn't play it for a while but I pressured him and after he started playing that was it, we hung out and talked about it constantly.

D Johnson I also played Skyrim before Morrowind, and Skyrim is better. The main reason is that the dungeons in Morrowind are 5 times more samey than Skyrim, way shorter, and too close quarters to sneak around much. Since these games are dungeon crawlers for the most part, this makes Skyrim better.

Turn left after hook rock, strait for 1000 paces then circle around north high mountain pass (not south high mountain or center high mountain) and then stop by the cliff that looks like a big penis. Ye, I was pissed in Oblivion when they added the quest map marker telling you exactly where to go. It made the game stupidly easy with no challenge or depth. If you removed it, it was still possible to find the location by reading your Journal. Skyrim got lazy and just removed the journal and designed all quests around the marker.

    • @exantiuse497

I can't understand why people never seem to realise you *don't have to use every tool the game gives you.* If you want extra challenge, don't use things that remove challenge from the game. I do agree about Skyrim, but that game is dumbed down from Oblivion in more ways than one anyways

In my opinion, morrowind is the best game, because the developers didn't give a shit, they made the world the way they wanted. None of this bullshit about catering to the player. I hate it when the world in video games is specially made for the player. Can't really get immersed. Video game developers should just do their own thing.

@@kapoka5058 Wow its been a looooong time since I posted that comment. Personally some of my opinions have change since I last posted but some have remained. So bare with me. First I love Morrowind, I just think its way overated and its far from the "immersive" gem some claim it to be and quite a wreck in many aspects. However it has by far the best main questline in my opinion. However I still dislike the map/ Journal aspect of the game. Its a smaller game which is why it has no markers and why you talk to people to travel. I just find that personally annoying since it does delay some choices to make in a player position. I also disliked the DLC but I respect anyone who differed in my taste. Its just a game so im not against that. Lastly, while I do admit radiant quest get annoying in Oblivion and Skyrim, I was able to enjoy those games slightly more than Morrowind. Again its just personal taste. I just dislike a lot of things morrowind and lore wise while its great, from a mechanical view I just find it quite low spectrum and dull. But I respect other peoples position on the matter. So im not going to act like an elitist and try to change someones taste on the matter. Anyways thanks for the reply even though its waaaay old on my part.

I played Morrowind back in 2003 and it became *the* game for me and a pal. We'd talk about our discoveries on the phone almost daily. Amazing experience. Nothing afterwards managed to capture this same feeling, and I thought I was just old and jaded and nothing could replicate the feelings of awe I got as a teen.
But then I replayed it in 2017. At one point, I was exploring northwest of Caldera, trying to reach the western shore, but I didn't find a way across the mountains. Then I decided to turn back but didn't find my way back. I walked through the wilderness at the ass end of nowhere, only barren hills around me with the occasional cliffracer squeak breaking the silence, and I realized that I was lost.
And the game allowed it. There was no quest marker to lead me back to the right path. No compass indicators to show me the nearest point of interest. Just me standing there, in the middle of nowhere, having lost my way. And at that precise moment, I felt at home. I had returned to that beautiful captivating world that allowed me to get lost in it. Thank you, Morrowind. You will always have a special place in my heart for this.

  • @stuckupcurlyguy

What I loved about Morrowind was the mixture of divine and mortal themes. Daedric Princes are real and they interfere in mortal affairs, but they do so by "blessing" mortals with minor trinkets. Mortals wield the tools of the divine and defy the gods. There are "living" gods who are somewhere inbetween gods and mortals, and the player character becomes a sort of "half-divine" with godlike tools, immortality and god-killing power. There are nutty magic phenomena like the Ghostfence, giant mushrooms, floating moons. Yet everything still feels so grounded - you can fly over the Ghostfence, check out every crater on that moon and fly circles around it. Everything has a mundane explanation. The final boss is literally building a new "God" out of brass and rocks. What is mundane, what is magical, and what is divine? Is there a difference? What is apotheosis? It's the perfect setting for the Dunmer, who are a people so stuck in their mythical past and their religious traditions that they can't see how materially poor and societally backwards they still are. Yet some of them are incredibly powerful and wise, the most transcendent people on Tamriel. What a game. Compare that to the cookie-cutter "demonic invasion" in Oblivion and the cookie-cutter "dragon invasion" in Skyrim. Those games still had their moments, but they didn't hit the same thematic sweet point.
Awe is the right word for it.

And the other would just be 2 new games you could not anything from them because there so old. it would be Interesting but they'd rather make elder scrolls 7 because it's less of a head wreck

Exploring is so much more rewarding and less linear too.

Morrowind was so scary as a kid, not just because of the horrific alien-like environments but the true sense that anything could happen.
Playing it through again as a teenager, the feeling was still there, no game since has felt so open to player possibilities.

OBsurdityTV In skyrim, Eso and possibly Oblivion (been too long since I played it) the enemies and items were scaled to the same level as the player or within a range of them. In Morrowind you could screw yourself by taking a silt strider to a high level area right out of the gate and not have the money to port back and not be able to survive. Hell I went to the final dungeon as level 5. Was using a bunch of exploits to survive the way there but it was all endgame enemies instead of level 5 like it would be in the later games.
Other difference is items. In skyrim you can only find items to steal that were at your level range. In Morrowind every placed weapon had its stats set in stone. So you could go find and steal glass and ebony stuff right at the start. If it was intended to be out of the hands of noobs it would require a really high sneak (steal? don't remember what it was back then) to pick the locks and get it. I used to murder a shopkeeper in Balmora right at the start of every playthrough for his ebony spear and shitty dagger that let you summon a bound dagger (on par with deadric back then) at will

OBsurdityTV There's mods that remove the level scaling from Skyrim and do a decent job of balance. Makes the world more interesting becayse you never know what you might find. Especially with Loot randomizers. The ones I use change the possible loot from each enemy type to be more fitting based on what they are. Say a wolf won't drop a weapon but might drop things like rings and jewels that a wolf could swallow. Randomizes the loot within the new set ups so they all have a fitting range of loot they can drop

Okay, lets all be honest here. Coming from Morrowind's open structure (drop you in with very little guidence), and then adding map markers to Elder Scrolls future titles is like the equivalent of taking The Legend of Zelda from Zelda 1 of the open world, go anywhere do anything to Ocarina of Time's more linear structure in a sense. You lost something in the transition. Although not a one-to-one comparison, there is truth in the fact that the player experiences MUCH LESS personal will and immersion. I mean, why would you? Just follow the damn map marker. It brings you Exactly to where you need. It Nerfs the whole open world feeling of feeling all alone, without a North Star anywhere.
    Hand holding ruined Elder Scrolls.

    • @Vipppala
      @Vipppala 6 років тому +17

Did you not read my what i wrote before you replied or what ? Why would i not fast travel, when the world is built with fast travelling in mind and therefor boring and bland. I am not a masochist. When i say i dont want fast travel, its because that means the developers need to put more effort into the world, which in turn means a better, more immersive world, with meaningful and memorable encounters that you will still remember in 5 years 10 years or 20 years in the future. Who in their right mind would put that effort into world creation, when they know that 90% of the people will just fast travel ? NO ONE because its a waste of resources. There are a few in skyrim, but thats not the case with like 90% of the encounters.
As for quest markers.. well guess what the game is built around that too. There are no journal entries on the same level of detail as there were in Morrowind for example that literally served the sole purpose of guiding you to where you had to go, via common sense, landmarkers etc.
The argument "Just dont or You can turn it off" is simply put idiotic. If ticking that option in the settings would suddenly add a similar journal system to the game.. sure i guess u could turn quest and map markers off.

Morrowind is amaizing. i bought it a week ago and fell in love with it. i must say, before i played morrowind, i hated dunmer so much... because they enslave my favorite (argonian) race and worship daedra(i played oblivion and skyrim at that time),but now they seem to be a proud, with rich history, nation. Personally, i think Vivec is an asshole and killed Nerevar. but really. buy this game or you wont have the true elder scrolls experience. i am currently roleplaying a shadowscale that betrayed his King of Black Marsh because his political views and fled to cyrodil where he was was attacked by argonian agents of the king of bkack marsh. He kills the agents but gets captured later by a group of ,paid by the argonian king, bounty hunters. he is then brought to prison to be executed, but gets released by the Emperor. so far this build is great. he is a night blade. Scot, thanks for the video) i also had some amaizing flash backs from solstheim. brilliant idea for a dlc. it does feed your nostalgia no matter what you played first, skyrim or morrowind.

For the next province we explore in TES, I want that alien feel that Morrowind had. That DOESN'T mean that I want huge mushrooms growing all over the place, or scribs, kwama, netches or anything like that. I want Bethesda to use the lore of the province to their advantage, rather than see it as a a crutch. For Valenwood, lets see these giant moving trees that house cities! For Elsweyr, lets see all the different Khajiit breeds! For Black Marsh, lets experience a deadly swamp that could kill you unless you're damn well prepared! For the Summerset Isles, lets see that glass city of Alinor, and the coral ruins of Cloudrest! Don't just replace all these with an in game explanation of authors exaggerating stuff, or a notable historical figure magically changing something. I HOPE that this is the reason for Bethesda waiting for technology that isn't here yet, to fully realize a province's cultural identity without rewriting it with a medieval fantasy setting

The loading screen pictures were really terrifying with the Hungers and Ogrims - the thought of running into them inside the first family tomb I found (which by themselves were creepy). The shambling of the corprus monsters, and of course I treated the water like lava because the dreugh zooming by scared me shitless as a kid.

Text based narrative is the only way to get deep narrative in games. If they have to do voice over for everything that will cost a shit load of money and most studios won't do it. So I think it actually helps Morrowind a lot that they went for text only in many of the interactions. The thing is, to attract a wide audience they need to dumb down mechanics, and that is what happened in the following iterations. Less dialog, less RPG, less of everything really with a focus on combat

i only watched a friend play back in the day and my roommate pointed out there is graphics mods for it and i should try it, so i bought it on steam, got the mods and damn. starting the game is like getting ready to go on a hike through a different world and it has been since gothic 1 and 2 that i have been so drawn into a game's world. Especially because there arent map markers and all that. When returning to your guild after you completed a mission and some sidequests along the way and empty your inventory / sort things out / sell them off it just feels like you have been on a real walk and you are happy to be home and need some time to recharge to get out there again because there is so much to explore and find out, it's just stunning to me and i love every second of it.

Morrowind is the best game I've ever played on any system. It really left a huge impression on me to this day.
For text-based dialogue, I remember characters in Morrowind to this day, whereas I struggle to recall standout characters in Oblivion/Skyrim. Who could forget "Uncle" Crassius Curio?
The lore and world of Morrowind has not been bettered. I literally remember trying to be a book collector in this game and creating my own library at Tel Uvirith. I remember joining the Tribunal Temple and just being given a book to take the pilgrimages at different sacred locations - learning about the humility of Lord Vivec when he toiled on the Fields of Kummu or wandering inside Ghostgate (scary stuff at first).
    Such an incredible game.

My first Morrowind playthrough was as a Nord. I had no idea the player would be a Dunmer messiah. An odd choice, but it led to some interesting gameplay. House Redoran seemed the best fit.
I agree Morrowind spoiled me with its political complexity, but I think Bethesda was reading it's playerbase. People didn't want to have to do separate games in separate factions. They want to be able to get to the top of every faction in one game, and move on to the next. The same thing can be said for map markers. People don't want to explore; most find it tedious. They prefer to play fetch, unlock their achievements, and move on.

yea it's sad that players want those things... because it undermines the idea of an RPG game.. it stops being an RPG when there are no consequences for your actions, and when exploration is just completely removed.

In Morrowind you could really create your own stories through game play. I remember when i first found the Morag Tong. No wikis or guides, just in game reading books, asking local rumors and bribing inn keepers until i found it. Thats a reward in itself. I think written instructions to "quests" is almost essential to the Elder Scrolls experience. It makes you immerse to the world to the fullest.

My personal reason why Morrowind is the best, we have enough voice acting to spark our imagination and use their voices while we read various texts in books, scrolls and dialogue. This not only improves your ability to read but, read difficult words both imaginary and real. This game has brought my imagination to life and I personally favor it. I did still 100% the GotY versions of Tes4&5 so, I'm not denying their capabilities at increasing ones faculties. Morrowind also MADE me look for things during quests with no markers, which has helped me in other endeavors when searching for things that either have or do not have some kind of guiding marker telling you exactly where something is.

Had a guy back in the early 2000s who was obssessed with this game and I only saw bits of footage and was never drawn to it, even though I do like RPGs in general. I was playing Morrowind when it came out - and back then we only had HDD and a voodoo 2 card or something like that. So the slow walking speed was actually essential to give the computer the time to build up the environment. My pc was quite fast for that time and Morrowind simply put every computer back then at the edge.

Absent quest marker made you appreciate the world! In Skyrim I can do the quest with one eye fixed on marker and the other one on twitter and I would be still able to complete the quest - that's not how games are supposed to be played. You are supposed to be invested, which also brings immersion and that makes it really fun and satisfying.

Wait, I can understand why some people dislike the combat, but tell me how it is "flawed". For what is it, it works perfectly. N'gasta Kvakis glad to get a reply lol. I forgot about this post because it was so long ago. My favorite things about morrowind was the pure freedom of the world and the set loot. Do whatever you want and go wherever you want. One of my biggest gripes in oblivion was when I finished a bunch of quests and unlocked the blade of woe and chillrend I realized afterward and far too late that since I did these missions at a low level that these "unique" rewards are now forced to do terrible damage for the rest of the game. If I have the balls and skill to sneak or worm my way past all the high level enemies I deserve that daedric dai katana in morrowind. Not to mention the freedom in spell crafting, armor, and weapon choices.
Instead of taking away features to appeal to a more broad audience they should have kept the features and made them more approachable and for goodness sake please, let graphics take a damn backseat for once over gameplay options and features. I'd take 3 more weapon types and 6 more different fighting styles plus a much bigger map over shinier graphics that no matter what will still be outdated within 2-3 years

  • @georgehennon2105
    @georgehennon2105 7 років тому +2

An important part for me, that you didn't mention, was the lack of level and item scaling. Like I could start a new character and immediately go find myself some ebony and daedric stuff. At the same time I would get completely wrecked by the guys guarding that stuff if I didn't run/teleport away. If I was new to the game and didn't know what I was doing, I would probably wander into a shrine filled with high level npcs that would 1 shot me. That's great, and something I experienced numerous times playing this game.
I prefer how the better gear in the game was rare and hand placed in sometimes really hidden spots. Maybe that item you want is guarded by an enemy that's level 20 and geared to the max, whether you're level 1 or level 20. You couldn't just smith thousands of iron daggers or have to wait until you were high enough level for npcs or chests to have the best items. You had to levitate to find a hidden door deep in a cave or swim through a grotto without drowning. That piece of daedric armor you just found in that dark corner? Well there's probably only 1 or 2 of those placed throughout the entire game. Some thought went into placing that item there.
Seriously though, just give me levitate back, so dungeons actually have a vertical element to them again.

So a loooong time ago, for a Christmas present, I got an xbox 360 game called: The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. I just left it on my shelf for a while, while on one day, I was bored, with nothing to do. So I popped in the game and oh man. I have hundreds of hours on Oblivion now. So, then, when I finished all the guilds, the main quests, and some shrine missions, I got another Xbox game. Skyrim. It was awesome. I Thought it was just as good as Oblivion. So then I have maybe a hundred hours on Skyrim. So fast forward a bit, then I find this game: Morrowind for cheap on eBay. So, I thought that it was compatible on the Xbox One, so I might as well give it a shot. So then, I got Morrowind, and I have around 20-30 hours so far, and I’m trying to do the main quest. By far, it has the most immersive gameplay. You couldn’t just fast travel, you had to walk, or ride on a stilt strider. It actually convinced you to explore, find landmarks, old dwemer ruins, or some imperial n’wah fort. It also gives you choices, so you can roleplay as a character. You can be a greedy kajiit, a noble imperial legion officer, whatever you want to be. Morrowind is my favorite game in the series bu far.
