I barely use uniques now. After 20 years of playing Diablo 2 for the first time, I'm going crazy with the runewords. I can't believe how I ever was able to play without Stealth for example.
Also for some reason they will not reset if you use a waypoint to go to another town and back! For example Lut Gholein -> Rogue Encampment - > Lut Gholein. It has to be any other waypoint for it to reset all vendor wares. 😊

I just yesterday learned that only hard points on ur synergies affect ur main skill. Equipped wand that gives +skills that synergies with bone spear and realized that this wand didnt increase my bone spear dmg at all lol. So embrassing hahaha.

Thank you for this video. I’m a casual player that took a long break from D2LOD. I looked at guides but did my own thing. Now Im back playing D2R on console. After hours of playing the game, I came to the same conclusion that you did about shopping for runeword bases. Oh, I did find a 2os Splint Armor in Act 3 that I used to make a Stealth runeword. After that, I didn’t find any runeword bases going forward into the later Acts. If I watched your video earlier, it would have saved me time. Subbed! 👍
also for some armors like archon plate if you get a low quality drop you can up it to norm in cube and it'll always get 3 sockets (at larzuk) because it becomes ilvl 1. some other stuff works for this too

As an alternative to flails which have both strength and dexterity requirements you can also give a fresh character a three socket Wirt’s leg, which has no requirements. You cannot make rune words with it but you can put 3x chipped/perfect emeralds or amethysts or Tirs for example.
Here is a pro tip for you: The best way to find elite runeword bases is by farming the chaos sanctuary with 0% magic find. This way you get far less magic items and you'll be pulling in tons of quality bases at the fastest possible speed.
@@DecoyAUT Yes. When weapons and armor drop the game uses you magic find to calculate if the items become blue. Then the game rolls again to see if they become yellow. Then they roll again to see if they become set or unique. So by having 0% magic find you can prevent all this from happening. So let's say you're hunting for an elite sword and you find a bad unique version, with 0% magic find that would have been a white item, which could have had sockets and/or quality.
@@shoopi1234 Cow level is nowhere near as good imo. Chaos Sanctuary drops a ton of good runeword bases. It is the best area by far for it if you have 0% magic find.
@@p0ck3tp3ar Chaos Sanctuary might have good drops, but it's a lot harder. For most people, cow level would be a lot easier (unless you are hammerdin with enigma). They also made Chaos harder in D2r because lower resist curse is back.
I think it should be noted that you should also look for them while having the highest players' number your character can handle without dying all the time or have a very slow clear speed. The higher the players' number->more items drop->better chance to drop a good base. You also get significantly more experience. Also drop chances only change in odd players' number like 1, 3, 5, 7. 4 is the same as 3, 6 is like 5 etc. Only the experience changes and the mosters being somewhat harder to kill

I think an advanced shopping video would be great. My friends and I used to play hardcore with the following rule - you can only use magic items. This led to us really deep diving into the shopping mechanics so we could get our +2 skill 20 ias gloves, or light sentry claws, and actually survive in Hell lol. Shopping is one of the coolest parts of the game imo. Thanks for the great content as always!

My pleb noob advice, try wearing runewords. If nm, then you must be in the 30s range. Those runewords are very good and relatively easy. If you can farm nm countess, then even more so. Edit: spirit sword for self, insight for merc, I guess?

To improve resistances, find amulets, rings, belts, gloves and boots with +20 or +30 resist, or multiple resistances if possible. depending on your character, there are other things that matter, like a good Leaf (Tir Ral staff) for Fire Sorceress, Fire Druid or Fire Traps Assassin. Insight (Ral Tir Tal Sol polearm/missile weapon/staff) is caster support with Meditation aura. White (Dol Io wand) for a Bone Necro. Strenght (Amn Tir melee weapon) Zephyr (Ort Eth missile weapon) is good for a Bowazon. Edge (Tir Tal Amn missile weapons) is a nice bow, very good if you play a Zoo Druid, or a Summon Necro. Smoke (Nef Lum armor) is very good for resistances, but you need some luck for that Lum rune. Pattern (Tal Ort Thul katars) is a new runeword for D2R, quite good for Assassins that like the Martials Arts, or even for Blade Traps. I've never even considered runewords much, even in the original, but having looked at some builds lately, I'm definitely going to start trying to put some things together. My big question though is given that you have said you can shop for socketed gear only in Acts 1 and 2 Normal, are you basically at the mercy of RNG-sus for higher level weapons? For example, I'm running a Werewolf Druid, currently level 8 on Act 1 Normal and I have the runes for Steel but I don't really want to waste it if I can end up putting it into something better later on. Or given that it is only Normal difficulty, should I wait until around Nightmare before I start using runewords at all?
Make It as soon as you can. You will come across more low level runes all the time. The point if low level runewords is to have them as soon as possible to make things easier for you.
My question is, how do you transition from early to mid game into late game if you never find any the better runes or have the materials to make the runeword? The whole sharing loots with other people kind of sucks sometime because you're basically fighting for drops. I feel like some people are running auto loots scripts because items are gone before they even hit the ground. And running solo in hell is tough without a good gear set.

19 and below. I shop for 2 socket poleaxe for strength later and 3 socket poleaxe for malice now. If you get to act 3 at level 20+ you will only find magical items in shops.
A bit nitpicking: Not the act or difficulty decides decides whether you can buy nonmagical gear in ths shops., but the character level. The higher the character level, the less nonmagical gear is available. The thing with normal act 1 and 2 vendors is that the ilvl (which is character level + 4 or +5) of their items are capped at rather low values (12 in normal act 1and 18 in act 2 IIRC) and the chance of something being nonmagical is based on that, so you can get nonmagical gear there with higher level characters as well. However, if you have rushed a low-level character through all of the game (like for getting additional Larzuk and Hellforge rewards), you can shop nonmagical gear with them in later acts and higher difficulties as well. When resetting shop inventories, you have to switch to a different area in the same act. If you go to a different act (or into town in a different act, I'm not sure), the inventory won't reset.
Please help need to find a War scepter plain white or gray base so I can make into runeword rift weapon. It’s seem very hard to find. Any suggestions would help greatly!!! With 4 open socket. Or act 5 vendor be able add 4 open sockets?
I know you keep saying to use larzuk to get socketed base items, but what if I already waste mine? am I left with just farming cow level and/or trying to use the cube recipe to add sockets? or would it be faster to just make a new sorc, get them lore, leaf and stealth and make a firebolt/fireball and speed running to larzuk quest?
Yes they definitely both count towards Runewords as long as they're grey and have the right socket count for the runeword it works :) The same way Pally shields count.
Shako, Magefist, tons of hoto bases and whatnot on hell cows but the monarch just wont show up. "Mow mow .. mow mow mow..." is haunting me in my nightmares.
Quick question gurus of diablo 2: does a paladin shield count as 'shield' for runewords? also, does a circlet count as 'helmet' for runewords? other than runewords, my friend told me to always play on /players 8, does that affect big boss enemies like diablo and mephisto? Yes they do, you can make spirit in any Paladin shield. You can also make any helmet runeword in circlets. /players 8 doesnt work in online for d2r; but if it did, it would affect all monsters and drops (chests)
is insight a high lvl runeword or mid or lower? i want to stick insight on a merc but dont have a really good base weapon to try and get sockets on yet..so i thought trying to buy one with the right amount of sockets from norm..is good or bad idea?
@@jesseroberts1041 normal Countess does not drop Sol rune. Ral Tir Tal Sol is Insight, so either he gets lucky at the Hell forge, or in act 5 normal. else, nightmare Countess, or pure luck till then.

How is a Forgotten Tower for finding bases? I'm in a desperate need for a decent armor for my merc, we're in Hell and in act 5 he's dying constantly so I wanted to find some elite 2-socket heavy armor to make Smoke (don't have any high runes to make anything better, not even Treachery atm).
i want to make an obedience, what about if is superior cude etc but white? and what would be a nice place to learn this kind of stuff because people tell you random stuff i prefer more wiki like stuff but idk about the affixes if is should get some or not. thanks mate!
3 weeks late but Llama is missing out on an important seller! Gheed. Act 1. Normal. 3 socket shield. You can have ancients pledge if you've got a Character through normal already. My druid had ancients pledge very early in act 1 normal. All the way through nightmare. I'm getting completely whooped out the gate of the rogue encampment in hell tho. So Llama... SAVE ME!!
In D2R you can kill everything in the cow level. As soon as you save and quit, you can run back to Tristram and get Wirt's Leg as soon as you don't have one.
@@Majoris239 kind of important thing to discuss considering the items are better in act 3....almost important enough to say you can get white and socketed items from vendors in acts 1, 2 and 3 as long as you are level 19 and below.

Hello, is it possible to carry a rune word several times on the char, e.g. "Spirit" as a sword and once as a shield version? Or is it like any gold item that you can only wear once per char Thx :-)
at that level you dont really need either. i would make a lore then go kill meph until i had all the basic late game gear. you dont need a merc at all for this strategy. search for videos on how to kill meph safely and quickly.
there's a table in diablo2 wiki where you can see what area in the game drops these items. Like llama said, you can get a broadsword base in normal cows which gives 4 sockets when you larzuk quest it. I think, you need to be at least hell or nightmare for these 5 socket base to drop
If I was making a leaf staff, would I want the base to have + fire bolt? For example if the base was +3 fire bolt and then I make it into leave, will it be +6 fire bolt?
Yeah it would add on. The runeword itself is good enough for leveling, that +3 mod would be nice yes. But it won't make a Huge difference. You'll still pwn

For anyone looking for a 2os Wand for White, use a level 17 character. Any suitable bone wands with 18 level skills will be red/unusable at Drognan.
Unless you want a +3 bone spear which is level 20. Doing this exact thing rn and learned about it today haha

you should note, vendor inventories won't reset when you leave town if another player is/stays in town in the same act.
also, note that if/when the other player is/stays in town you have to wait for him/her to leave.

For Lut I personally just jump into the sewers and out of them to reset the items, way faster than going to another waypoint and loading the whole map

3os shield was super easy for me. But I've been farming for about 100 runs with getting a 4os sword.
Grab a normal crystal sword (white) from normal cows and use your act 5 quest to socket it = 4 socket sword
yeah I watched his other vid on Spirit and Insight, and got a crystal sword on my 3rd norm cow run and took it to larzuk,
I had to use the cube for mine, first one got one os.. Second got 4. Going for a polearm for Insight now

Make It as soon as you can. You will come across more low level runes all the time. The point if low level runewords is to have them as soon as possible to make things easier for you.

My question is, how do you transition from early to mid game into late game if you never find any the better runes or have the materials to make the runeword? The whole sharing loots with other people kind of sucks sometime because you're basically fighting for drops. I feel like some people are running auto loots scripts because items are gone before they even hit the ground. And running solo in hell is tough without a good gear set.
I farm andy and meph hell solo. Youll find things 2 trade eventually. U can farm meph with a naked sorceress, and andy with really basic gear
If your not with a premade group farming runes solo is much better
stuck farming nightmare till you get your runeword pieces or early act 1 hell

19 and below. I shop for 2 socket poleaxe for strength later and 3 socket poleaxe for malice now. If you get to act 3 at level 20+ you will only find magical items in shops.

A bit nitpicking:
Not the act or difficulty decides decides whether you can buy nonmagical gear in ths shops., but the character level. The higher the character level, the less nonmagical gear is available. The thing with normal act 1 and 2 vendors is that the ilvl (which is character level + 4 or +5) of their items are capped at rather low values (12 in normal act 1and 18 in act 2 IIRC) and the chance of something being nonmagical is based on that, so you can get nonmagical gear there with higher level characters as well. However, if you have rushed a low-level character through all of the game (like for getting additional Larzuk and Hellforge rewards), you can shop nonmagical gear with them in later acts and higher difficulties as well.
When resetting shop inventories, you have to switch to a different area in the same act. If you go to a different act (or into town in a different act, I'm not sure), the inventory won't reset.

I know you keep saying to use larzuk to get socketed base items, but what if I already waste mine? am I left with just farming cow level and/or trying to use the cube recipe to add sockets? or would it be faster to just make a new sorc, get them lore, leaf and stealth and make a firebolt/fireball and speed running to larzuk quest?

Yes they definitely both count towards Runewords as long as they're grey and have the right socket count for the runeword it works :) The same way Pally shields count.
Do superior socketed items count for runewords too?

also, does a circlet count as 'helmet' for runewords?

Yes they do, you can make spirit in any Paladin shield. You can also make any helmet runeword in circlets. /players 8 doesnt work in online for d2r; but if it did, it would affect all monsters and drops (chests)
is insight a high lvl runeword or mid or lower? i want to stick insight on a merc but dont have a really good base weapon to try and get sockets on yet..so i thought trying to buy one with the right amount of sockets from norm..is good or bad idea?
About as low level as they get. You can get every rune off of normal countess.

How is a Forgotten Tower for finding bases? I'm in a desperate need for a decent armor for my merc, we're in Hell and in act 5 he's dying constantly so I wanted to find some elite 2-socket heavy armor to make Smoke (don't have any high runes to make anything better, not even Treachery atm).

Gheed. Act 1. Normal. 3 socket shield. You can have ancients pledge if you've got a Character through normal already. My druid had ancients pledge very early in act 1 normal. All the way through nightmare. I'm getting completely whooped out the gate of the rogue encampment in hell tho. So Llama...

In D2R you can kill everything in the cow level. As soon as you save and quit, you can run back to Tristram and get Wirt's Leg as soon as you don't have one.

Yes it's possible to have 2 spirits. Also I'm pretty sure allowing only one unique type is a limitation in d3 but not d2.
I'm a lvl 72 sorc, no helm and I have Ort/Sol should I make Lore Helm or should I keep Sol run for something like Insight for merc?
at that level you dont really need either. i would make a lore then go kill meph until i had all the basic late game gear. you dont need a merc at all for this strategy. search for videos on how to kill meph safely and quickly.

there's a table in diablo2 wiki where you can see what area in the game drops these items. Like llama said, you can get a broadsword base in normal cows which gives 4 sockets when you larzuk quest it. I think, you need to be at least hell or nightmare for these 5 socket base to drop
Normal cows also for the crystal sword with sockets i need both almost done with act 5.
My inventory is full is there a safe place to drop my items for safe keeping for another time.

If I was making a leaf staff, would I want the base to have + fire bolt? For example if the base was +3 fire bolt and then I make it into leave, will it be +6 fire bolt?
Yeah it would add on. The runeword itself is good enough for leveling, that +3 mod would be nice yes. But it won't make a Huge difference. You'll still pwn
