I decided to make my first character a javazon to farm cows for bases. I figure there'd be plenty of sorcs MF'ing, but fewer folks farming bases. It's been a good niche! But after not playing D2 for years and years, I def needed this refresher. This whole series has been ridiculously helpful, thank you sir!
This is exactly what I needed, I still need to take notes on your other video(s) I watched, these videos are definitely going in my playlist! Diablo 2 is such a great game, we are the same age and I grew up playing it with my older brothers who were way better than me and now I can enjoy it even more!
I've beat the game on normal when it first came out, never went to nightmare or hell because I didn't understand it, didn't play it for a while and about 5 years ago saw some of your speed runs, now with d2r you have been my biggest help in understanding this game
i would add a tips to this video. sometimes you find a base that is damaged. low quality. There is a cube recipes to "repair" those, turning them into the normal version of the item. So don't discard an item because it's low quality and it's stats are not the one you wanted. For example, if you find a damaged sacred targe with + 20 all resist. repair it ! because what is actually happening is the cube give you a brand new version of the item, the stats are re-rolled and this time the sacred targe might have +45 all res with a bit of luck. So don't discard El and Eld rune too fast. it's good to have a few on hand as well as chipped gems to repair armor or weapons. And maybe luck out on the re-roll.
didn't know that, actually i never really played with these weird recipes so its very new to me. This game has so much stuff and theory its hard to keep up lol.
Interestingly these recipes are not on the Wikia page for the Horadric Cube, only on the pages for the El and Eld runes, so they're not very well known. I only learned about them a few months ago by randomly reading the page for El rune, despite having played D2 since the early 00s. P.S. why would anyone want to discard a rune, even an El? Just keep and combine them, and after all, even Breath of the Dying requires the El and Eld runes. :D
@@ilyasnopchenko2886 simple, it's a matter of value and time spend. dealing with El rune takes too much time and is not rewarding enough. it takes 27 El to make a single Nef who is the first rune who have a decent value. it's only three rank above El. 3^3=3*3*3=27 gathering 27 rune then do 13 cube upgrade would take some time and would take some room in the inventory. so overall maybe 5 minutes spend at least on doing all the manipulations. If someone would want to try and make a Pul rune from only found El rune. the required amount of El rune would be 3^20=3486784401 and that's 3 billion and half. if i convert this in time the same way as before that would be around 2 billion minutes which is equal to 3 685 years. Good luck with that. So basically, it takes too much time and too much inventory space to be worth it. it might still be ok if you are searching for some Tir rune or simply if you enjoy upgrading stuff ^^
@@pipMcDohl Haha, imagine the pain if El was the only rune ever dropping and the rest having to be meticulously created by combining them. 🙂 For my characters, most of the rune drops are in the Ral ~ Amn range anyway so I'm not starting from scratch. I’m playing nightmare, collecting 4 socket pole arms for insights. I have one of each class that I’m playing simultaneously, so they’re sharing gear in the stashes.
It's cool, personally, that you explained the difference between normal, exceptional, and elite with the bardiche. My very first unique playing D2 at all was Dimoak's Hew. I've always liked those polearms for that reason.
I recently found a 15% Ed max defense (603) 3 socket archon plate on my holy grail. Best find I’ve found so far, better than pretty much any hr, or unique so far
Love this. I've been playing (again after years) since Resurrected came out on PS4 and have been putting off all this big planning for items, but now with my character over lvl. 60 and all 4 of my town inventories filled to max with items that I might want to use, I think it's past due time here to start figuring it out.
Upping Uniques: (How it works) Normally, items with Enhanced Defense start with their MAX_DEF+1 but after Upping an item, it rolls from the Min-Max of the new items defense, regardless of the Enhanced Defense modifier. Upping a Base item to Exceptional (EXC) doesn't just give you the Required level of the EXC item, it also adds a hidden level requirement of +5. Similarly, EXC upgrading to Elite adds a hidden level requirement of +7. This means upping Base item to Elite adds a hidden level requirement of +12 in addition to the Base items level requirement. As an example, Bloodfist Heavy Gloves Requires level 9 and it becomes Bloodfist Vampirebone Gloves Requiring level 59 (vampirebone gloves 47 +12).
One thing worth mentioning regarding bases, not 100% sure it applies to d2r though. People really like superior versions of things. For example a superior archon plate. It can roll up to 15% enhanced defense but on top of that any superior version will start off with the max roll+1 on defense/damage. So any superior version will automatically be at the top level of defense/damage for that particular base. A 15% ed Archon Plate with 3 open sockets will pretty much be the most sought after armor to build an enigma in, and since everyone wants enigmas that puts a lot of demand on that base.
I feel like Troll Nests are a fairly good base to watch out for too. While you can't make Spirit in them, you can make a number of other good runewords in them that are endgame usable.
Wow man I always enjoy listening but I'm surprised to hear new stuff, never knew shields also have different weights. I just tend to chose grim shields for my Rhyme base ideally because of the highest block (I figured it may save me at some point - probably doesn't matter with base dex - looks good anyway)...
I started playing 2 weeks ago (never played the original D2, only D3) and after watching this video I feel like this game is even more complicated than I thought lmao Thanks for the insights though, I will probably come back to this at a later point :D
@Max Payne Just because a game is easy doesn’t mean you are good at it. I’m a souls player and know plenty of people that beat the game but still suck ass at it. Not just gameplay wise but also their stat allocation.
hey llama, loving the guides. as a new comer to the game they are really helpful and very easy to follow through! in that note can you make a quick video on merc gear progression or something similar to that? rn i have tal helm, insight and smoke on my merc but he never stays alive and im not sure on what to upgrade other than runewords that costs more than my whole loadout. thanks!
This is a great point. I'm struggling with my merc too. I have am act 2 merc with prayer aura and I put an insight and stealth on him at first. When that wasn't enough anymore I manged to get him an obedience runeword pole arm and put smoke on him. When that wasn't enough anymore and I didn't have the means to get high runes for stuff like fortitude I tried to get clever and put a treachery armor runeword for the attack speed and fade proc and that worked well then I gave him a unique polearm that had attack speed, damage, life leech and weaken proc and put an amn rune for extra leech(although I think shael would have been better), then tals helmet for another 10% life leech. This has been the best set up I've got for him so far. I use rejuvenation potions on him now too and it helps a lot. I made a cta to help even further. When you are stuck it helps to incrementally get stronger where you can to fight through the tough spots. It adds up. Hope this helps.
HOLY FUCK, after playing for 20 years on and off I never knew If I upgraded a belt Id get more potion slots. This whole time I've been using the good ol +8 goldwrap lmfao!
Ive been searching everywhere online for a comprehensive list that i can refer too while MFing. I will never remember this. Especially a list that includes white items that can be worthwhile to upgrade in cube or with Larzuk.
Been watching all your vids and as a 20 year vet there aren't many things i dont know but there are so many things ive forgotten about over the years. Just like comfort food listening to this
Underrated item, 5 socket double axe, same str req and just as viable for Call to Arms as a 5 socket crystal sword + a great base for a summoner necro's beast runeword.
i like the war axe a bit more str req but more nice looking then the ugly flail or crystal sword but double axe doesn't look that bad either and tbh when u use cta u have the 45/60 str already cause u have a monarch spirit on the side most like
If you care how your character looks search for an armor that you like the look of. Also, superior bases are more expensive to repair and if you don't like to pay 100s of thousands of gold in repair bills (especially as a melee character who gets hit more often) just look for an armor that has higher end defense base for non superior armors (you can check online the defense variations). For weapons, check the range a weapon has so you know how close you have to go to reach a monster to hit it; if you dual wield, always put the shorter range weapon in your main hand. And always check the attack speed base keeping in mind, the faster the weapon is the less base damage it has.
I recently (before Resurrected) did a mostly SSF Zealot playthrough and I used an upgraded Headstriker at the end, worked pretty well. Bosses died super quick.
Some people like Enhance Defense Armours like 15% ed (white and ethereals) and for weapons 15% enhance damage when making runewords. A 15%ed Archon Plate with 3 sockets is sought after for Enigma and a 4 sockets for Chains Of Honour. Ethereal armors with 15%ed are nice for merc armours like Fortitude or Stone. Those armours might be worth some very nice runes too for trade 😀
Hi! I really love your videos and helped me out on my Hardcore. Could you give us the website that you are using to get those great description for D2r items :)
I'm sure that this can apply to any character level, but it would be nice to see some videos that focus more on us players from 20-40-60 level range so that we know how to have the best experience. I'm only able to play maybe an hour a day, so guides for 90+ character things doesn't apply for me personally. Love the content btw and have learned a lot since playing original D2 to D2R.
theres many playthrough/budget videos on his channel. i don't think you've looked cause theres a myriad of exactly what youre asking for on this same channel...
9:39. Can anyone tell me how he gets his Merc armor so high? Is that from the rune word and the base plate itself? Because I didn't even know defense could go that high!
The fortitude states it's +214% defence, but Fortitude is a 200% multiplier, so the base must be a +14% Superior Boneweave, which is also ethereal (+50%). So you add 64% to the item's original defence (which seems to be about 487) to get about 798 base defence for the armour. THEN you apply the 200% runeword bonus to that figure. I suppose a perfect 600 defence Sacred armour could be +15% superior, +50% ethereal = 990 def before applying a runeword, which would get you nearly 3k defence with Fortitude, and there are words that give even more +def.
@@peterwright5311 Ok, I think I have that lol. Armor base (hopefully superior for best) then having it be eth for higher defense, and then adding the runeword itself for the final overall def multiplier! Appreciate it
Great video, however it would be amazing if you could annotate times. I find myself rewatching segments quite a lot but finding the exact timestamp I'm interested in is a pain.
Very insightful video. hoh man can you doa similar video for sets and uniques that one should keep that arent immediatly obvious? my character stashs are all full because i feel like i gotta keep everything. XD i dont know what ill do when ladder actually comes out.
Cryptic Swords are nice because they also have low str requirements (lower than an archon plate). The higher dex requirements are acceptable because most one-handed sword users will already have decent dex for shield block. But then again, they are vastly inferior to phase blades, unless you are filled with +minimum damage stuff. But for spirit runeword, they are good enough.
What happens if you take the regular base upgrade it to an and then socket with larzuk. Like I know depending on clvl / where it's found can dictate this? Like a crystal sword for instance if one had been found in a place which would typically give it only 4os does upgrading the base change this ? Sorry if it's worded badly lol
Great video, really makes that more clear for a newb like me. One more question though: What about SUPERIOR items. Should I use my expensive runes only on superior items? I've read somewhere that this greatly increases repair costs, but why should that even matter? Gold isn't even used as basic unit of trading (runes seem to do that), so it doesn't seem to matter much how much gold you have?
Repair costs matter cuz it might be too grindy/ expensive to even use your item when its durability goes down. If you have to always spend life savings for just one repair that’s kinda annoying I suppose
Also I forgot to mention it but kicksins like to upgrade boots and smiters will often upgrade a Herald of Zakarum (HOZ) for extra dmg.
Do a guide on finding good items in nightmare and hell (ex. Shako) please!
You forgot to mention the Superior item bases, that is the real high end stuff you can't even roll you can just Larzuk for max sockets.

Going over your diablo 2 courses while servers are down, this is useful stuff what I'm always wondering when farming.
Finally! I've been hoarding six-socket items like a madman (probably a habit from playing POE~)
Funny you say that boss, I need a 6os eth pb or zerk axe, if your on soft core pc 😂
@@duncanscoles7245 I have 6os pb with 7ed if you need, softcore eu
Sold a 5socket 14ed phase blade for mal+5 socket phase blade today. I had no idea what was its worth, and almost sold it for a pul.
hey llama, loving the guides. as a new comer to the game they are really helpful and very easy to follow through!
in that note can you make a quick video on merc gear progression or something similar to that? rn i have tal helm, insight and smoke on my merc but he never stays alive and im not sure on what to upgrade other than runewords that costs more than my whole loadout.
Since they dropped Pinhead in Dead by Daylight my first thought of that Kanai's Cube was the Hellraiser configuration cube XD. Thanks for this video!
Best diablo 2 guides I dint watch anyone else
HOLY FUCK, after playing for 20 years on and off I never knew If I upgraded a belt Id get more potion slots.
This whole time I've been using the good ol +8 goldwrap lmfao!
I was thinking the same thing hahaha upgraded right away!
Same. I just found this out last night.
@atombrain111 ... did you watch the video? lol
My dude
If that's the case. You literally played the game without paying attention at all...
It's quite obvious, even if you have low cognitive ability.
Did you mention helms? I may have missed it somehow :(
Ive been searching everywhere online for a comprehensive list that i can refer too while MFing. I will never remember this. Especially a list that includes white items that can be worthwhile to upgrade in cube or with Larzuk.
Been watching all your vids and as a 20 year vet there aren't many things i dont know but there are so many things ive forgotten about over the years. Just like comfort food listening to this
2:55 Loch AH ber ("Loch" pronounced like Loch Ness) :)
I forgot almost everything and you are helping me alot thanks mate! Getting rdy for ladder hehe
Every time I see fortitude I think to myself "El Solo Dolo." I can't unsee it.
lmao
Sounds like if a spanish mother catches you masturbating. "El Solo Dolo!".
Phase Blade is not just desired because it is indestructible, it also has the best base attack speed out of all of them.
Underrated item, 5 socket double axe, same str req and just as viable for Call to Arms as a 5 socket crystal sword + a great base for a summoner necro's beast runeword.
i like the war axe a bit more str req but more nice looking then the ugly flail or crystal sword but double axe doesn't look that bad either and tbh when u use cta u have the 45/60 str already cause u have a monarch spirit on the side most like
@@013chubba For my necro i went for the homonculus with an um rune in it for more resist and +2 curses.
Cool video thanks for that! Where can I find this amazing item overview page you use at minute 8:33?
I’ve been so puzzled why people like ethereal items. Thanks lama for clearing this up.
And always check the attack speed base keeping in mind, the faster the weapon is the less base damage it has.
perfectly in time to help me out which bases im gonna farm for before going into hell mode :D
That is a massive waste of time.
@@gregpenismith1248 why that?
What is the name of this wiki u using at 5:28?? Could you tell me please? It would help me a lot.
The reverb is genuinely fking me up,
But fantastic video, thank you
I recently (before Resurrected) did a mostly SSF Zealot playthrough and I used an upgraded Headstriker at the end, worked pretty well. Bosses died super quick.
That's a fun character to play SSF. I love swapping around smite/zeal/charge and having redemption and cleanse, fun stuff.
Great video. I'm a returning player and had no idea about this stuff. Thank you! SUBBED
You know what would be fucking hilarious to watch? llama, DBrunski, and SweetPhil podcast. WhooaH
Thank you for the good insight I am enjoying D2R alot lately.
No mention of bows? What's the best bow base for like faith or harmony ? hydra bow? GMB?
Yeah tips and tricks to get through nightmare and start hell. He's got another video like that I guess about getting ready for hell.
theres many playthrough/budget videos on his channel. i don't think you've looked cause theres a myriad of exactly what youre asking for on this same channel...
Pretty much all you need for normal and nightmare is stealth (tal+eth), lore (ort+sol) helm, and spirit weapons
I have been looking for a video like this. Thanks!,
With all your videos now i have no choice but to Buy D2R and Play again lol. Great vid like all the others
9:39. Can anyone tell me how he gets his Merc armor so high? Is that from the rune word and the base plate itself? Because I didn't even know defense could go that high!
The runeword, the good base and eth all contribute to the high armour.
@@Hellown Exactly what I needed. Tyvm!
@@peterwright5311 Ok, I think I have that lol. Armor base (hopefully superior for best) then having it be eth for higher defense, and then adding the runeword itself for the final overall def multiplier! Appreciate it
@Peter Wright
Superior %ed bonus doesn't work like ethereal. It's the same as magical %ed so it's just added to %ed from the runeword.
hey llama, can you please put the links of the websited you are using in the video description pls?
14:00 wait what, so if you socket a non socket white monarch at Larzuk, will it receive 4 sockets instantly??
Yes. Larzuk always gives max sockets depending on the item lvl and type of item, but a monarch always has max 4os so it is guaranteed.
Hello
Whether you send a link to the page where you check the properties of normal items ? Video 3:30
I finally remembered to like and subscribe
Great video, however it would be amazing if you could annotate times. I find myself rewatching segments quite a lot but finding the exact timestamp I'm interested in is a pain.

Very insightful video. hoh man can you doa similar video for sets and uniques that one should keep that arent immediatly obvious? my character stashs are all full because i feel like i gotta keep everything. XD i dont know what ill do when ladder actually comes out.
Patch 2.4 brings upgrades to set items as well. Same recipe as uniques!
3os, 4os ETH Cryptic sword, are extremely important. Plague, Lawbringer, Oath (for zerker), and several others.
Great, but where can you find the Epic socketed and normal items? Cow Runs on Hell?
What is the website you use for that neat looking spreadsheet of the armors? I can only seem to find the Fandom page.
So a 4s heraldic sheild with 42 all resi, that rolled 35 fcr spirit is a sign from above that I should shelf my sorc and level a hammerdin?
Arent we just using our sorcs to equip hammerdins xD?

D2lod was never dead but I still appreciate resurrected
Cryptic Swords are nice because they also have low str requirements (lower than an archon plate). The higher dex requirements are acceptable because most one-handed sword users will already have decent dex for shield block.
But then again, they are vastly inferior to phase blades, unless you are filled with +minimum damage stuff. But for spirit runeword, they are good enough.
Eth Cryptic Swords are commonly used for Oath runeword to be used by Zealots
What happens if you take the regular base upgrade it to an and then socket with larzuk. Like I know depending on clvl / where it's found can dictate this? Like a crystal sword for instance if one had been found in a place which would typically give it only 4os does upgrading the base change this ? Sorry if it's worded badly lol
what is the program called that he keeps opening
Great video, really makes that more clear for a newb like me. One more question though: What about SUPERIOR items. Should I use my expensive runes only on superior items? I've read somewhere that this greatly increases repair costs, but why should that even matter? Gold isn't even used as basic unit of trading (runes seem to do that), so it doesn't seem to matter much how much gold you have?
Repair costs matter cuz it might be too grindy/ expensive to even use your item when its durability goes down. If you have to always spend life savings for just one repair that’s kinda annoying I suppose
