    Whoa. This is the bomb. You’ve solved my consternation over how to refinish a gorgeous but “messy” door.

    I can’t thank you enough for suggesting a roller. I HATE gel stain but it is the only option for a fiberglass door if you don’t want to paint it. It’s like trying to spread glue. Screwed up another fiberglass door and spent three hours stripping it with citrustrip. Saw your suggestion on rolling and bought various textured 4 inch rolls. Ended up using the purple velour roller and it came out fantastic. Looks like leather without all the fake shine. I am so grateful for your video !!!!!
    THANK YOU 😊

    (1) remove the door knob for easier time applying stain in that area (2) strongly recommend a clear / finishing coat (or a stain that includes a polyurethane) so it lasts
    Otherwise this looks great!

    The door looks great, I would consider changing the light-colored weatherstripping to a black. A small detail that will allow the weatherstripping to shadow away. For me, I think it would be easier to remove the door hardware, if not tighten the screws to make sure it doesn't shift in the future.

    Is Crud Cutter a better choice than methyl hydrate? Fabulous finished result by the way!

      @KerriLawless  5 років тому +1

      Hi Kimberly! Not sure about methyl hydrate so I cant give you a comparison. I do LOVE Krud Kutter though! It cleans and deglosses the surface. Just make sure to rinse and let dry before applying an oil based product.

    Kerri can you gel stain a fiberglass door that has never been painted?

    • @KerriLawless

      Hi there, As far as I know, you should be able to. I really don't see a reason that it wouldn't work, but you may want to check out the manufacturer recommendations just to be sure. Thanks so much for watching!

    Her technique is poor because it's too thick and NEVER apply stain with a roller. WOW! Also, remove the hardware for a cleaner completed project. Even with gel stain, it needs to be wiped off. I would like to see the door a year after staining, as I assume it's chipping and not looking great. She needs a top coat to keep out the moister and preserve the finish.

      No need to wipe off gel stain especially if you want a darker look. But I am surprised she didn't put a marine bar in each on the outside.

      I was thinking the same! I would honestly just of removed the door and set It in a covered area, took the hardware off, taped off the whole glass the gone in. Also why not just mix the two Color’s? 🙁

    Hi Kerri,
    I was wondering why you didn’t wipe off the stain after applying it. Did the gel stain completely dry for the second coat the following day, without wiping off the excess stain the first day? I have some experience staining wood projects, but I usually send them over to my finisher. I’m redoing a client’s door soon, and your method seems quickest and cleanest way to go about it. Still hoping to determine if I’ll need to wipe off after letting it sit for 10 minutes or so. Thanks, Kerri!

      That's what you do with Jill stone. You want full coverage although on some wood application some people like the wood to show through

    Don’t you use a a Clear Coat over the stain afterwards? The reason I ask is because I am getting ready to redo our front fiberglass door and 2 sidelights. The original clear coat on the door has been flaking away the last couple of years so I have no choice but to sand it past the bad clear coat. We purchased our complete frame with door and sidelights from the Home Depot my wife tells me 11 years ago. Don’t know if I can mention the brand here. If not clear coating how will your Gel Coat Stain be protected? I just purchased a qt of Minwax Walnut Gel Stain to use and they recommend a Satin Clear Top Coat they manufacture.

      @KerriLawless  4 роки тому +1

      The type of gel stain that I use is extremely durable but yes, a topcoat will definitely help. I usually use a product by Benjamin Moore called “Stays Clear”, but Minwax polycrylic is pretty good as well.

      Kerri Lawless I have to tell you Kerri I like how yours looks without a clear coat to be honest with you. I have to do a little more research. With the cold weather here already I will probably have to wait til Spring anyway. I have no problem going to another brand of Gel Stain if it means I could go without a clear coat which will only eventually crack and chip off again like the original product that came on the Door from the factory. Thanks for responding so quickly.
