I did not realize that my bathroom cabinets were not real wood, but this method still worked! However the paint brush and roller didn't work the best for us - we ended up using socks and that gave a better texture. Thanks for making this video!
my husband is a wood worker who builds furniture and he uses Gel stains quiet often and they do require a top coat or sealer otherwise the color can be rubbed off or chipped.
thank you!
Would you please share name of the sealer?
Pleas can you share the name of the sealer
Does the top coat have fumes that you need to wear a mask for
Thats if you gel stain clean wood that has never been painted, in this video this cabines were already painted and therefore are sealed already. You just need to be sure they are perfletly clean and no grease , probably light sanding would be better.
I’m transforming my kitchen into an industrial look. I love this idea!
That is exactly the color I want to redo my kitchen cabinets they are wood and have an oak color to them already. I'm so excited to try this out! Thank you for this video ❤
Ditto. My cabinets are oak and I want a darker stain.
Oh my word! I have been putting off remodeling my kitchen because I thought doing the cabinets was going to take a long time. But seeing how quick, east, and affordable it is, I'm definitely going to tackle it sooner rather than later. Thank you so much!
Did you do your kitchen? If so, how did it turn out? Was it as easy as you thought? How does it look?? I would love to know. Thanks in advance 🙏
Loved yur energy !!! Appears so simple to achieve the outcome desired....VIEWED IT 3X and I am sold !!! ONE WOMAN OPERATOR HERE..
That turned out beautiful 😍
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME AND INFORMATIVE CONTENT!! THANK YOU!!!! 😊
I want to say thank you for this upload, I love doing all types of crafts, home designing and DIY projects. You are an awesome teacher and now have a new subscriber. I also want to say I appreciate the way that you explain your DIYs, not only are you very upbeat and pleasant but also the fact that while you're talking through your uploads you explain very well what you're doing and why and a pet peeve of mine is when people are constantly saying uhh uhh or um um throughout their entire video which I didn't hear you do one time. Thank you for that! And I look forward to watching more of your videos
Haha my bad lol ,I'm remoldleing a condo ,I accedintly sent it to u. Anyways how u doing?
Okay Kerri. I love you for this!!!! Thank you.
What an amazing difference color makes! It looks so modern and fabulous. I’ve never used gel stain but I think I’m gonna have to try it!
Thanks so much! I hope you post your before and after pics in the comments. I would love to see it!
Kerri Lawless - just some comments from having followed your video and researching a ton of other sites, that would be helpful for people to know. 1. If using a roller and rolling on gel stain, its likely going to be be pretty thick - depending on whats already on your cupboards, if applied too thick - the gel stain may not dry properly, leaving a tacky mess. It would be helpful to note this for people as well as mention, some best practices around how to fix the problem of gel stain applied too thick and how to correct it. I learnt a ton during the course of this project and through the research, and these are all likely points people should know in the forefront. Thanks
I HOPE it really will be this easy for my kitchen with 29 doors, 13 drawers, plus frames. Looking at other methods with 3 prep/clean steps, 3 coats/wipe/sand, then 1-2 top coats...I'd be dead before its finished! Thanks for all the good tips. 😊
Did you try it?
@@learnandplaywitholivia wish I had now, but "life" happened. Maybe this spring, fingers crossed. Got rabbit-trailed at one point looking at Heritage "one step" that supposedly doesnt need sanding or priming BUT painting light over dark may require as many as 7 coats...pays to read LOTS of comments before committing. Now I'm back to thinking "stain".
That looks amazing
Thanks Barbara
What a great tip! I have a client with honey oak cabinets and our plan was to paint them white. Now I have another option… Thanks!
The light oak is such a dramatic transformation when you use the dark gel stain! It will definitely require two coats, but totally worth it!
I paint a lot of cabinets white though as well. It just depends on what else is in the house.
What so you useto prep the cabinet? Never mind I found your previous replay! Krud Cutter it is! Thank you!!!
Thank you for this.
HERMOSO TRANSFORMACION!
BEAUTIFUL TRANSFORMATION 😃
Thanks love this video so much. I have a very nice wooden bedroom suite but the stain is a reddish brown, it doesn’t go with the color scheme of my apartment, gray toned walls and gray toned hardwood floors. I’ve been wanting to stain my bedroom furniture a darker brown like this. Thanks so much for the video very helpful!! The cabinets look great!
Hi Mak! Thanks so much, I love that you found this video is helpful!!! I’d also love to know how your furniture turns out! 🌸

Great video!
Thank you!
Beautiful job!!! Love this video. Every other video I've watched suggests sanding but yours. Of course I'd really like to not have to sand, but I want to make sure that my cabinets will still come out nice. Why do you believe that sanding is not necessary?
I'm also trying to avoid sanding and this video made staining look amazingly easy.
Really enjoy your channel and you earned a new subscriber
Thank you!
I would like to try this! The ends of my cabinets seem to be more of a ply wood or maybe even have a laminate covering the end of the cabinet. Will the stain still adhere to this?
How does this look after a few years? Did you recommend any sanding or sealing?
Very nice.
It looks great! Did you change or paint the backsplash? It looks a little different but maybe it's just the light. Thanks! 😊
Thanks so much! We didn’t change anything else but we did add much brighter light bulbs. They had amber colored Edison bulbs originally and we changed them to soft white. It made such a difference. 🌸

What do you suggest to change oak cabinets to a cherry wood? I see Old Masters has a beautiful Rich Mahagony, would that work alone? Thanks!!
Hey kerri my wife and I love ur videos. We watched your transformation of the cabinets with the old masters dark walnut and provincial stain. Omg came out amazing. Question for u i have a little one with sticky Fingers and want to protect the finish from his hands what do u recommend as a top coat
Polyurethane
Issom Beituni , greetings I want to ask you one question. My cabinets have some water damage do u know if I need to something first before applying the stain ? Thank you
Hey Kerri, love the channel! I am learning a lot. Would I be able to use gray gel stain on top of brand new white cabinets? Or would it be better to use a paint? I do not want the cabinets to look distressed. Thanks!
Hi, I followed your instructions and paint my cabinet. Mine came out dark but beautiful. Thank you for your video.
Awwww...so happy to hear that! And you are welcome! 🥰
Oh my goodness...you did an amazing job!!! It’s just beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing your photo with me. 🥰

@@KerriLawless can you please kindly tell me if I can paint my kitchen tile if I can what color and what kind of paint I need to get?
Unfortunately I would not recommend painting floor tile. I have literally tried everything ever recommended for floor tile and I find that nothing will really last. Sorry, I wish I had better news for you! Maybe there is something out there but I’ve never been able to find anything that really works.
What a difference! Love it!!!!
Thank you!!!!
Does this rub off onto towels of water or something else needs wiped off while generally working in kitchen?
So my cabinetsbare this exact color but i want to go dark like almost black, would you still recommend this gel stain?
I have watched your video and show you using a brush... how do you get lines with applying the stain?
What brand did you use to clean and prep the cabinets?
Do you have to sand the cabinets before staining?
Can I gel stain over previously regular stained cabinets??
What about drying and sticking together the door to the frame? You need a top coat or wipe off the excess stain before the top coat?
Good Job, do you also do it as a job
and if you how much do you charge?
Did you finish with a top coat?
Hi Kerri, I have a question about the gel stain you're using... do you find that in the sunlight it still looks espresso color? I have espresso color kitchen cabinets and they need a bit of sprucing up. I tried the java gel stain and it looks fine until the sunshine in and looks very brown kind of a muddy medium brown and I really don't like it. So now, looking at another gel stain please help! I was really wanting the original looking espresso even when the sunshines into the kitchen like the original stain finish I had
Maybe try a lighter color or more of a translucent?
Hi, I'm wanting to paint my oak color looking cabinets. Something very similar to your color. Can you tell me what you used also do I wipe them after I paint or just let it dry? Your help will be much appreciated!
Wipe
Incredible transformation!
I see you painted the walls around the cabinets a grayish tone. What color was that?
Thank you. Im doing my cabinets. What do I use to wipe cabinets off. There are some greasy and some light stripped from sun coming in..where do I get the gel stain?
TSP (trisodium phosphate) is a good product for that.
@@leeformanek6272 Can I get that at Lowes?
@@priscillas.2111 Yes, ma'am. ☺️
did you ever try this? how did it turn out?
How long did it take to dry?
I have a Oak finish and would also like to go Espresso...will this work for me
did you do it? I have 29 doors, 13 drawers, and frames to do, so I am really looking for "easy"!
Did you seal the cabinets with any topcoat? We're gonna tackle our kitchen cabinets soon .
Do cabinets need to be sanded first?
I believe my kitchen cabinets are not wood (I don't know what the are), so would a gel stain work on them? I absolutely love the espresso color. Thank you.
I don’t think mine are real wood either. Did you ever try staining your cabinets?
Can we do to vanished cabinets and change to white color?
The video starts over midway through, and repeats. Love the tips, but you might want to check the edit. Thanks for sharing!
Can you go from the real dark cabinets to lighter cherrywood?
Looking to darken my garage wood cabinets nearest to black. Or this color if that’s the darkest.
This is amazing! This will save me and my husband about $2500. Thanks for posting! Did you add a top/sealing coat to the stain? Also does it take long to dry?
I actually did not add a topcoat to this but you definitely could. It wouldn’t hurt to add that extra layer of protection: however, this particular gel stain is incredibly durable. I would let it dry a couple of days before adding a topcoat and putting a fan on toward the cabinets will help it to dry.
My favorite topcoat is “Benjamin Moore Stays Clear” It is Acrylic so it can be cleaned up with water, it is non-yellowing and can be applied over an oil based product.
Hope that helps! 🌸
Kerri Lawless thanks so much for your tips and help! :)

Great video! Where can you pick up gel stains? Lowe’s or Home Depot?
They don't sell that exact brand at Lowes or Home Depot -- I purchased it at a local hardware store. I have a link in the description if you want to purchase online!

You sweetie look amazing
Hello kerri,
First and foremost thank you for the videos! I am a first time home owner and I have officially been biten by the DIY bug. One of my first (of many) projects that I would like to tackle would be staining my kitchen cabinets! Seeing that I am completely new to staining I was hoping that you could help she'd see light on some of my confusion. 1st question, in this video you had your helpers wiped off/clean the cabinets where other tend to always suggest some type of sanding (is sanding absolutely necessary). 2nd, I do desire to have a dark finish (as in the video above). . . I noticed that you never wiped off any of the gel stain (even though other videos do still wile off the gel stain) 3rd question, do you need to put a top coat after your have reached your desired color/stain? If so what would you recommend (or is that determined by the brand of gel stain used) ?
Thank you in advance for helping this completely lost no one d DIYer!!
Regards,
Centurium
Hi Centurium, you are so welcome...we love to help! We have started recently cleaning with a product called Krud Kutter. I leave it on about 15 - 30 minutes and then rinse it several times. This thoroughly degreases the surface and takes the shine down quite a bit. Sanding to take the shine down a bit more can’t hurt, but this product adheres very well and I haven’t found it necessary.
I don’t wipe the stain back off when I’m going over a previously finished surface because it is not soaking in like it would on a raw wood surface. This is also another reason why it takes longer to dry between coats...it is sitting on top of the existing surface as opposed to soaking in.
Although this product has always been very durable for me, it will definitely give another level of protection if you add a clear coat. My favorite is Benjamin Moore Stays Clear. I would use the “Low Lustre” sheen for this. Make sure to wait a couple of days after applying the final coat of stain before applying the top coat to make sure that it is thoroughly dry.
One of my favorite things about “Stays Clear” is that it is water based but can be applied over the oil based gel stain as long as it is thoroughly dry. It is extremely durable and dries very quickly. Make sure to apply thin coats of the Clear. Multiple thin coats adhere better than one thick coat.
Hope that helps!!! 🌸
Can I use on red cherry cabinets that are not real wood?
What do you use to clean? My cabinets turn 55 this yr😏
Can you use gel stain on hardwood floors
Is it possible to lighten cabinets this way?
How did you prepare your cabinets before starting to put on the gel stain?
just a good degreasing cleanser
does it matter what brand we use cause locally we cannot find this brand....
So you didn't have to remove the laquer with thinner or anything? And the grain in the wood is still visible afterwards?
I’ve recently started cleaning the sirfaces with a product called krud Kutter which I found after this video and it’s very helpful for cleaning thoroughly and dulling the topcoat a bit. All we did in this case was clean them well with a degreaser. You can’t see the grain very well but it’s not as solid as using paint.
As far as I know from research I have done, gel stain WILL actually adhere without stripping previous varnish/poly/top coat... Traditional liquid stain will NOT. Hope that helps 😊
I have old cabinets that are in great condition! They just look outdated to me. They ar flat with no design or print. With a gloss coat. Would that stain work without taking the gloss off??
Yes it will work. You definitely need to prep them with Krud Kutter. Spray it on, let it sit at least 15 minutes or even a little longer and then rinse them really good. The Krud Kutter. will take the shine down a bit. If they are super glossy it couldn’t hurt to scuff them with sandpaper after cleaning but I’ve never done any heavy sanding and have had great success.

Kerri is a BOSS lady! lol
Thanks for the great video. What color is your gel stain for the cabinet? thanks Duc.
Hello
Are those real wood kitchen cabinet
Can I use this method on cabinets that are lighter??
Yes, we’ve done that many times. Hopefully we will have a video on that process in a couple of months. You can go on our channel and look at how we did a light oak front door. Basically it is the same process you just have to do one more coat to get good coverage.
Ok thank you so much! I’m glad I don’t have to take the doors off. You just saved this first time home owner lots of time and money ☺️
Patrick so happy to hear that!
Hi Patrick, We just started a BRAND NEW Designaholic Facebook Group TODAY and would love to have you join! Here's the link: facebook.com/groups/designaholics/
What brand of gel stain is yours and color please
old masters Provincial and Dark Walnut
To the point below regarding a sealer, after gel stain is dry?
Yes
Are these cabinets raw? Or was the original color sealed?
How does this compare to general finishes gel stain?
Hi there, unfortunately I don’t know the answer to that question. I have never used general finishes. I’ve been using this product for over 15 years now and absolutely love it though!
Do you have to wipe off the excess?
Great question! With a wiping stain you do have to wipe off the excess but with the gel stain and this particular finish, it actually stays on top of the surface instead of soaking in. It takes a couple of days to dry because of that but it is extremely durable! Hope that helps. Thanks so much for watching! 🌸
Kerri Lawless do you need to put a clear top coat on this?
Your voice was very low hard to hear on this video but I am still going to watch much love from Cali.
Hi Christine! A couple of people have said that but it sounds right when we listen to it, so we can't figure out what's going on. Thank you so much for watching!!!
Nice! Did u use a topcoat?
No we didn’t and this gel stain is extremely durable, but it definitely would not hurt. My favorite is Benjamin Moore stays clear. Would probably use a low luster sheen on this
Kerri Lawless thank you! 🙏 😊
Kerri Lawless hii, sorry to bother you, I want to start on my bathroom cabinets and theres a little water damage in some areas should I sand those first and continue with the gel stain, also is there a substitute for the two colors you chose that I could get from walmart or home depot or the like by any chance? I really like the color of the cabinets you guys painted and was hoping I could find some way of getting it!
Hi there! So sorry...just seeing this. If the water damaged areas are rough, then I would sand it to be smooth first. If it is just discolored, the stain should be dark enough that it shouldn’t be noticeable. If you do sand it though, that area will be more porous, and will accept the stain differently so I would sand the entire cabinet if you do have to sand that spot so that the finish will be even.
Also, Old Masters isn’t sold at big box stores, but you may be able to find a smaller paint store locally that sells it.
No top coat/poly?
I’ve used it without a topcoat many times. This product is extremely durable if left to dry before use. Adding a topcoat would always provide additional protection though.
What did you do to prep your cabinets for the stain?
Hi there! I cleaned them with Krud Kutter and wipe them down with water. If you leave the Krud Kutter on for a few minutes before you rinse it off, it takes the sheen down a good bit. This product adheres very well and doesn’t require extensive prep
Kerri Lawless I thought you said this was without sanding?
@@carladenson9258 Oh wow you are right! I did this project months quite a while before we uploaded the video and have done many since then. For this one we didn't sand, I was wrong We do a lot of projects and have done it differently at different times. In all of the different techniques we have tried, we have found that as long as the sheen is not high gloss, this product sticks very well. The sheen on these cabinets was not very glossy which is even better. You should leave the Krud Kutter on for a while before you rinse it off and it will also help with deglossing the surface. This is something we have realized since this video.
Kerri Lawless thank you for the clarification! ❤️
Carla Denson you’re welcome!
Would you recommend sanding on cabinets that have a shiny polish to them, or should this gel stain stick on regardless of sand.
If it is super shiny, it definitely couldn’t hurt to sand them, but if you take the shine down with Krud Kutter, I don’t feel that it is entirely necessary, especially if you add a durable acrylic topcoat. I think you will be fine either way but if you have a greater comfort level with sanding, then I would just give it a light scuff. Just make sure that you sand with the grain and use a grit that is not very coarse so that you don’t create deep scratches. Good luck with your project! Please let me know how it turns out!🌸

are these laminate cabinets cant hear you
No, they are real wood, not laminate. And I’m so sorry about whatever is going on with the sound. I can hear it fine when I play it so I’m not sure what to do to fix it. Thank you so much for watching! 🌸
Got a little tad bit of info… but still searching. Biggest issue is that we have all had a coworker that we would rather beat the ever loving love out of rather than make water on them if they were burning…. Corporate accounts… Nina speaking…
Does this work on laminate "wood" cabinets?
Actually, I would not use this on laminate. It may stick but there’s a really good chance that it won’t and I’ve never tried it to be sure. Chalk paint however will stick it properly prepared. We are about to release a video on chalk painting cabinets so please subscribe if you haven’t already so you won’t miss it.

Staining unfinished cabinets dark .
My gel stain won’t dry
Depending on the weather it can take a couple of days. Also, put a fan on in there as long as there is no dust that will be blown around. That will help it dry faster as well.
Sound , can't hear very well
Oh, so sorry to hear that Marlene. Not sure what is going on with that.
Why not just use their espresso mix?
So no polyurethane finish was needed? I’ve never heard of that… hmmmm 🤔
Bether than kichen
It's gorgeous.Talk about skillful--you are dressed to party instead of "paint" clothes
Did you stain the shelves inside the cabinet too?
No, I don’t ever stain the inside. I don’t find that it’s necessary especially for the amount of work that would be involved. I would say that would just be a preference
