- This BenQ W1070 was sent to me by a viewer who had been trying to get it up and running after it stopped working properly one day. The initial symptoms seemed to be color wheel related. After replacing the color wheel there was no improvement. Once I started to look at it, I found a few little things but I mostly realized the issue was not the color wheel but a power problem.
There was no 5V to the color wheel sensor which is shared with other components in the mainboard. The lack of proper 5V, caused the color wheel to act like it was bad.
The chip I changed was a ADV7612BSWZ HDMI chip.
I tried to use a lamp that I had sitting around but it seems too far gone. I will be rebuilding that lamp as a test lamp. However if you want a new lamp that is built properly and not a cheap knock off but still much cheaper than OEM, you can buy one here.

This is a more uncommon but realistic issue. We suspect the projector was damaged by a power surge that entered via the HDMI port. There will be a short part 3 once the new part arrives.

it took me 5 hours to unscrew the projector and understand that i had the color wheel problem, then I bought a new color wheel for 50 euros on al1express, after 3 weeks I received it. It took me again 5 hours to rescrew the projector but at last my benQ W1070 is coming back for a new ride with clean fans !!!
the failure occured after 400 hours of the second lamp so around 5400 hours.

Hey Frank thanks for the great video i have a benq w1070 and im getting no light from the lamp even after bulb replacement i believe it maybe the ballast but i don't know how i could diagnose it is there a test i can perform on it to see if that's where my no light issue is thanks
Great video, thanks Frank. My W1070 blew its bulb a week ago - there was quite a bang - and I have a replacement lamp arrive which I've swapped in (after vacuuming our any remaining debris). Unfortunately the projector doesn't work properly now... it comes on for enough time to get the Benq loading screen, the Amazon Fire TV home screen and then it glitches, colours go funny and the bulb turns off. I can't then turn off the projector by the remote (or power button) and have to pull the cord. Also, it looks too dim compared with normal before the colours and picture start glitching. Any ideas how I could diagnose and then fix the issue?
Any chance you know the correct part# for a W1070 DMD chip? Struggling to find good info online.
Hi Frank, I have a w1070 not turning on at all. I have a multimeter, I can't see any blown capacitors or anything that looks unusual on the boards. Do you have a video or can offer me any advice on testing the power supply for this projector? Feels wasteful to throw it out without trying to repair it!
what low voltages are you seeing on the header to the mainboard?
I wonder if anyone knows how to clean the dust trapped inside the benq lens. I have stripped the whole lens from the front and from the bacjk where the dmd chip and cleaned inside all mirrors etc but dust still there when you zoom in. Only disappear when focused.

Hi Frank ... got a benq sh910 dlp , bulb not coming on. I do get 103v at bulb plug ... color wheel spins good when pushing power on .. This happened after a bulb popped and broke while on ... figured it just needed bulb but obviously it did more damage. will not power up any lamp i plugged in ... any ideas ? thank you
Hello Frank! Thanks for this great tutorial!!! I have a bit of a problem with my W1070 and i have no clue what is the problem. Maybe you could give me an advice... So the bulb exploded while i was watching a movie. All the panel lights went of. no green red or anything. I thought replacing the bulb would solve it. After I did that, nothing happened. still deal, no lights at all. Do you have any idea what might going on? Could the bulb explosion affect any of the electronics? Any tip would be appreciated! Lightning strike took out my HDMI. Do I replace the entire board? If so where can it be purchased and how easy is replacement?
I would replace the entire board. It's possible that the old one could be repaired but lightening is a nasty problem. It can damage things that seem okay now but start flaking out at random times. Replacement is easy. You don't need to flash or program anything. You can try the company I use. gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com is the contact info. They ship DHL and take Paypal. i have a benq w 770st and cant find the problem.
my old lamp went off after its normal lifespan, the replacement lamp didnt worked either.
first thought was a bad lamp due to shipping, so i got another one today, my beamer is starting but the bulb won't start and the beamer starts giving out red flashes on the lamp indicator as it had died.
any suggestions?
Hi Leutnant! My suspicion would be a color wheel problem first. The startup sequence is, press power button, then fans start, color wheel starts, then lamp starts. If the color wheel or fans do not spin up first, the lamp will never light.
If the color wheel does spin up, and no lamp, then ballast would be my next area to investigate. I have numerous color wheel repair videos. This video may be most helpful for you. I think I have a color wheel problem. How much would it cost for me to have you swap out a color wheel for me or fix the issue. When I turn the brightness up on the projector the colors go from normal to inverted green. Do you have people ship to you for repairs?

Hi Frank, my w1070 doesn't turn on at all after I tried disassembling everything, cleaning color wheel and screen, and putting it back together. At 13:43, I noticed that your mainboard lights turned on when you pressed the switch bypass. My lights don't turn on at all when I do this. Yes, it's plugged in, and power cord has been tested. =) I've double-checked that the bulb is seated properly. As far as I can tell, all connectors to the mainboard are also in place. What do you recommend as next steps?
check the alignment of the low voltage power supply pins that come up into the mainboard. It's easy to offset them and this can happen. also check the thermal breaker connection and any power connections to the power supply.
@@FixitFrank You da man! =) The power supply pins must not have been aligned correctly. Now I have power again. Here goes attempt #2 at trying to clean the dmd. Lots of spots, especially when out of focus and with a dark background. On my first cleaning attempt, I blew some compressed air from a can on them and wiped them with a lens cloth, but still spotty.

Hi Frank, my BenQ W1070 has exhausted the lamp hours and I bought an original Osram bulb, it starts up but the Lamp button is red and won’t display. I have it verified by a technician that the bulb is working fine. They said I need the ‘Key Combinations’ to reset the lamp hours which can be done even when it is not projecting anything from the bulb. I have not been able to to find the correct key combinations. Any idea? Thanks.
They are partly lying to you. Some projectors do stay in protection mode when the timer runs out, but not the W1070. You can only reset the timer when the lamp lights. The W1070 will 100% not shut itself off when the timer expires.
What happened with the old lamp that caused you to replace it?
@@FixitFrank Sorry for the late reply. Even the original lamp seems to be fine according to the technician. He said it has a Chinese firmware and the reset combination is different from my locale firmware. I still have it wrapped and packed nicely in a shelf. Been a hectic time working in a hospital. I hope I will have time tomorrow (Sunday) to bring it out and try some troubleshooting methods again.

Hi frank, great video. I have exactly the same projector as you are repairing in this video. One day when I wanted to use this projector I pressed the power button on projector, the projector not turn on and somethig explode inside. Do you thing it was some capacitor in power suply. Because i checked the lamp and it is no broken at all. Thank you for your answer.
What have you checked so far? There are many things that could cause that. I would probably start checking the color wheel. If there are no LEDs then maybe the power supply but I suspect you heard the color wheel fly apart.
@@FixitFrank Hi thank you for your answer I checked only bulb. when it happened, it was like some explosion inside and the smoke comes out of the projector. Tomorrow I will disassembly the projector to see if there will be some noticeable damage.
FixitFrank, is it possible if you can either provide the 5 wires wiring order from the mainboard to the ballast. This is the wire that send UART signal to the ballast to control the bulb intensity and such. I accidentally ripped the connector and pulled out the wires out of the connector before knowing the colour sequence.

@@FixitFrank Oh, could you please tell me the colour for the other end, where it plugs into the ballast. That is the end that I damaged and do not know the order.
The order of the colours are the same. However, from which pin does the colour start as black

eBay is good. There is no real "OEM" source anymore. Another option is contact the people at Time Projector. Email them with a picture of the model # and let them know you need a color wheel. They ship DHL and take paypal for payment. Good company.

Hi Frank. I have a W1070 that’s completely dead. No lights, sounds etc. Everything inside seems perfect, I’ve reseated the bulb and made sure all the edge connectors are firmly attached. I’m in the uk so I can’t send it to you, can you give me any tips to fix it?
I have to ask the dumb question. Is the lamp cover in place? The safety interlock will defeat the power without the door installed.

@@FixitFrank Aah, that one. No it does nothing. I pressed it in and held it in like on your video when the top panel was off but it did absolutely nothing at all.
@@ravi911uk OK, had to check. That's the first thing that gets in the way. Second is the thermal breaker. It should self reset though.
What happened to it? Did it work one day and not the next? Fuse, power supply, and the interlock switch are the usual suspects. I'm guessing you tried another power cord.
help me please I opened up my projector because when I dropped my projector the glass from the bulb went in the blower fan and when I removed the glass and put the projector back together it won't turn on? what did I do wrong

FixitFrank yeah it’s a w1070 I opened it up again right now to check if everything is plugged in and it is and it shows no lights when I plug it in or when I click the power button

FixitFrank I’m using a PS4 plug to plug turn on the projector it was working 1 month ago and when I got back from vacation I took apart my projector when I put it back and plugged it in I can hear the electricity so I don’t think my plug is messed up
FixitFrank yeah the lamp cover is installed and yeah I think it’s lined up there’s like a small spot and those long pins have to go in

Does it do anything at all? No fans? No other noises?
One thing to check is for a stuck button. Unplug it. The press each button and make sure you feel it click. If not, that might be the problem. If another button is stuck, it wont let the projector see when your main power is pressed. If not, then it will need to be opened up and voltages will need to be checked. Getting a power light and nothing else is unusual.
@@FixitFrank so i opened it today and i checked the bulb is looking good no cracks or black soot, when i do press the power button while holding down the other button i dunno what its called, it doesnt do anything, no fans and no light from the lamp, and the color wheel is not spinning. and no other noises the button feels fine i clicks as a press it
@@xatreyu make sure the door is closed. It won't do anything with the lamp cover removed. If the lamp cover is installed and it's not working, it would need to be checked inside.

It could be a few things. Power supply problem, bad button, firmware, or a mainboard. You would need to be well versed in using a volt meter to search further. If you have a meter and want to try, let me know.

Bypass switch button? I am not familiar with this. What are your symptoms?

@@BananaFlapjacks90 ah ok! I see. You can cut the red/black wires that go to it and the white plug on the powersupply, then solder them together, tape up the connection as its interrupting the line voltage. You could also jump the pins at hte power supply but again keep in mind that the voltage is at line level so protect the jumper appropriately.
