BENQ W1070 Disassembly - Changing Lamp and Cleaning Blower Fan After Light Exploded

  • I had the light bulb explode in my BENQ W1070 projector that I use in my media room for both watching movies and sometimes for gaming. After purchasing a new light, the W1070 projector would overheat after a few minutes and turn off.
The problem was that pieces of glass got sucked into the center blower fan, which requires taking most of the projector apart. Since I couldn't find a video of anyone else doing this I thought I'd quickly film how I took it apart and cleaned out the blower and then reassembled the unit into perfect working condition.
Overall this is a great 1080p projector for any media room and I would highly suggest it, although if you are in the market for a new one there is a newer HT2050 or HT3050 out for purchase from BenQ now (links to those below):

Absolutely brilliant and such a perfect and unselfish antidote to all the vile hate on the internet. This is exactly what happened to my projector. I followed your instructions despite being a bit daunted by how complex it looked to do. Found the fan, opened it up and removed secveral chunks of bulb glass. Working once more. Very satisfying thanks to you taking the time to post up this. Thanks once more.

Thank you so much, fixed my W1070+. The bulb exploded 6 months ago but we removed it for cleaning, when we reinstalled it. It came up with the same error code after 3 minutes. After taking the fan out and cleaning it. The projector worked as good as new. Thank you!

Just wanted to say thank you like so many other people here. This was exactly my problem and I was ready to bin the projector. With little experience and watching the video I did pull it all apart and there was a lot of dust and two glass fragments in the fan. Great video and this should give me another 4000hrs of viewing. Well done.

After eight years and a half, my bulb has explode and, I had the same "blower" issue that you explain in your video... thanks to which, i have just fix it, and (once cleaned of little crystal pieces) my projector is runing again... Thanks you very much for your encouragement.
I was in the same situation: exploded lamp, fitted a new one (Osram bulb only), after which the projector would not stay on for more than 3-5 minutes.
I did not really encounter much debris in the bottom fan, but I clean out all parts anyway.
During the first assembly I forgot to connect one cable, but after second attempt all seemed to work fine.
I'd say all in all this took me about 1-1.5 hours.

Great video! Just got done cleaning out my w1070 after a bulb popped. A couple comments....
    1. The black "strap" on the corner of the PCB sits on TOP of the PCB. I noticed when you re-assembled you put it underneath the PCB. I doubt it is a problem, but just thought I should point it out.
    2. A 5mm socket works perfectly for installing and removing the hex head screws around the VGA and RS232 ports.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

    • @NewbComputerBuild
      @NewbComputerBuild  7 років тому +1

Great feedback! I hadn't noticed putting the black strap on top of the PCB, so great catch. And yes thank you, a 5mm socket would have been much more efficient than using the small pliers I used for those hex screws, great to know for anyone who's going to take their unit apart.

We had the same issue, but instead we turned our vacuum into a blower and blew into each vent opening. There were shards of glass and dust that came flying out. I would try this first before taking the projector apart.

Just followed your Video and repaired my W1070. Thanks a lot for putting this online! Damn hidden Fan3 - they really could have made that more accessible.
What also helped me was how to get into the Service menu to check the fan-Speed. Just select the last menu item (info) and press 3x up+down and then enter. In the Service menu on the 2nd item you can find the fan Speeds.

I agree, damn hidden small Fan3. Also it's surprising how even that small fan can affect temperature so greatly that the unit overheats within minutes.

@@NewbComputerBuild Was there mercury in the bulb? If so, did you expose yourself to it? Residue mercury still present will evaporate in the heat and the fan(s) will make it an airborne hazard. Best to run the projector outside for 10 mins and let it cool sufficiently.

I disassembled my projector as you did in this very video - in fact I had my laptop on the table while I did it and watched your video. But I have to say it's not that complicated - once you lose the fear before it, it's pretty straight forward (and backwards when you re-assemble it).
Unfortunately it doesn't fix MY problem, I still get the LAMP-error, so my hope is, that I bought a bad lamp and get a working one in return.
But no matter what the future will bring, I have to say, I'm pretty proud of myself that I did it (and it didn't explode on the first test) because 2 weks ago I would have never thought that I would be able to do that without destroying the entire thing :)
    So thank you anyways :)

I have the same projector and my bulb exploded a few weeks ago. I got about 3500 hours. But I decided to by a Chinese ebay cartridge for $70 rather than $300. It was flickering after 2 minutes and after a few experiments I found that it works only in Cinema Mode. If I change the option to Normal or Bright it flickers. Weird. I also had to clean a the shattered glass out of my unit too. Glad to hear that yours blew up too.

OMG ... my light bulb exploded last week, I ordered a new lamp and ... have the same problem. Projector starts but within a few seconds a get the LAMP signal and nothing happens.
So, it looks like I have to do the same as you did, thanks for the video because I really was like buying a new one and throwing away this one. But now I think I have to try this first ... I mean, after all, I can't make it any worse, can I? Even if it doesn't work (or I'm too dumb to get it reassembled) I'm at the same point as "I have to buy a new one" but THIS NOW is a chance to save a lot of money and getting back the projector I love so much.
Another question ... the fans at the side of the projector - aren't these "normal" fans that will also be used in computers? Haven't you thought about changing them with better fans (more powerful, more silent etc.)? Looks like there is room for optimization :)

Hi, i have exactly same exact problem and i followed it and now the Fan works fine. But unfortunately now the projector complaining about lamp (the lamp indicator goes red and shuts off after a min or so), this is original bulb which was working before i took it apart. I tried to remove and place the bulb again but it did not help. I think i assembled correctly, as the projector powers on, fan is running again.
any idea where it could have gone wrong? and which wiring should i check if it reports a bulb problem?

Tyvm for this great video and links.
My bulb exploded some days ago and i've yet replaced it. Thankfully, it seems all fans are working right (checked in page 2 of service menu, after pressing MENU,ENTER+SOURCE at projectors button panel). After two or three hours of use it seems everything's ok.
Anyway, as I've read that high operating temperatures could be the cause of lamp explosions I checked which temperature was the lamp operating at, and saw it's working around 280-300 degrees (F).
I tried to get info on the recommended or desired operating temp for the lamp but couldn't find anything.
Which range of temperature do your projectors are getting?

Do you think it would be a good thing the replace the fan while you're at it? I mean since your taking the thing apart. I was thinking about changing the fans for ultra quiet Noctua fans. I'm just not too sure about the required RPM and voltage of the fans.

The inlet fan connector detached from the circuit board during my disassembly. Can I repair by soldering or is it time to shop for a new projector?

Of course ppl order at the stupid terminals. You cannot order at the counter anymore. I disagree with all the customer upsides this video states. Ordering at the drive through is at least three times at fast.

Hey, great video. I had the bulb blow out and installed another one but it kept overheating. I followed your video and took out the fan and found a bunch of glass. I put it back together but now it won't power on at all. Any suggestions on what I may have forgotten to plug back in?

Hey - glad you like the video, and it's tough to tell why your unit isn't powering on at all. I'd first check if the new bulb is plugged all the way in? Also make sure the top lid is attached properly as it needs to push down a black button below it to trigger the power buttons to work.
