  • Second part in the 3 part series of repairing a viewers BenQ W1070 that seemed to have a bad color wheel. Yet upon deeper investigation, the issue ended up being a bad HDMI chip. The chip was shorted internally. This pulled down the voltage regulator UQ1. After verifying UQ1 was OK, I removed the HDMI chip and the projector began to run correctly (but with no HDMI). The owner OK'd replacing the HDMI chip which will be part 3 of the series. The part number of the problem IC is ADV7612BSWZ.
    Part 3 will be here once I record it(once the chip gets here).

    The most important thing to get out of this series is don't get tunnel vision with an issue. The old adage of 'Thou Shalt Measure Voltages' holds as true today as it did when this term was coined.
    Shotgunning parts by replacing until it works is expensive and wasteful. I could just replace the main-board, but cost (and partly my ego) say repairing the existing board is the way to go.

    Great video Frank. My first projector, that I have repaired, it was the same as this one. It was almost dead. Power button led was very dim and it was blinking, nothing else was coming on. It was the PMD1000 IC and a capacitor that was shorted. This cap it was on the top of the board. It was a capacitor for the PMD1000.

    Hi there. I have watched many of your videos looking for solution to a problem with my benq W1070. I havent found anything like it. But you seem to have the most experience with this type of projectors. My fan nr.4 (its the one next to the speaker) stopped working. I have replaced it but no luck. The new one wont move. I looked through and i found out that the connector on the motherboard got a little burned. The pins on the back of it has melted. I have a little soldering setup at home but this connections are microscopic. I wont even try fixing it. My idea is to connect the fan somewhere else where its easy to get 12v that runs once I power up the projector. I could easily hook it up to the cable of the front biggest fan. Would that work ok? Maybe you have a better suggestion... Thanks

      Unfortunately you can't drive them external from the projector. There is a status wire that repoets the rpms. You'll get a fan failure message. However, you can hard wire the fan to the main board. Just solder those ends in place of the connector. It makes replacement a lot harder but at this point i suspect your fan will last as long as the projector. Replacing the connector is also an option but it can be tricky if you're not familiar with micro soldering. If you are in the US and don't mind shipping me the main board, I can repair and or replace the connector. I have an email listed on the about page if you'd like to get in touch

      @@FixitFrank Hi. I'm in London UK. How much do you charge for something like this? Over here it would cost me too much. No point. This projector is 5 years old. I'm going to need a new one soon. My efforts are only to postpone it. I have disabled the error checking from the service menu. I'm running the projector with the intake fan on external 12V DC power (constant max rpm). It's all good. The only thing is that this way i have to manually switch the fan on and off. If I could connect it to the projectors 12V it would go on and off automatically.

      London? I can still possibly help. I know a guy in Manchester who is good. He also deals in used projectors. I don't want to post his email here but contact him via his ebay store for his info. www.ebay.co.uk/str/panoramatic Let him know I referred you. He watches and posts here sometimes too. He's a solid guy.

      Check the other regulators coming off the PMD1000, see if you have the low voltages on each rail from the PMD1000. HDMI chip failures can cause this to go bad too.

    Hey Frank, I've had my W1070 around 10 yrs now and my second bulb just burst a few days ago. No problem I said, I have a new in box spare sitting on the shelf - so I blew the cobwebs out og the projector and put it in. Now it won't light. I turn it on and get the red 'Lamp' led for a moment, then it shuts down. I double checked and all the motherboard connections are good (I took it off to blow out the dust), the bulb looks good - I'm puzzled. Any thoughts?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Рік тому

      Hi! That is puzzling, I agree. If the old bulb burst/exploded that may have damaged your ballast. One of the reasons the manufacturer recommends replacing them at 2000 hours is to prevent them from bursting during use. The arc points can hit together and damage the ballast. Another possibility is some quartz glass got loose and jammed your color wheel. The color wheel has to spin up first before the lamp will ignite. Also, make sure the lamp door is seated fully or the door switch wont allow power to flow to the power supply. There is also a smaller but non zero chance that your backup bulb sat too long. While they are sealed, they can slowly outgas over the years. It's rare though. I have only seen it a handful of times but I should mention it. I don't see any glaring symptoms unfortunately. It would need some deeper troubleshooting with some voltage tests to narrow it down further. But in the short term, make sure the color wheel is spinning when you press power. If not that might be your culprit.

    • @mlb6d9
      @mlb6d9 Рік тому

      @@FixitFrank Thanks Frank. When I took out the old bulb, I also checked the color wheel and it looks to be spinning freely, nothing jamming it. I made sure the power switch was pressed down and that bulb power socket was fully pressed onto the pins. I've had the new bulb for several years. I'll check out the ballast tonight....Thanks for your advice! I do have a new bulb coming. If that doesn't work and the ballast looks ok, then maybe it's the universe telling me I need to get that newer projector I've been eyeing ;-) I hate to say that because I enjoy fixing things, but circuit boards are out of my wheelhouse.

    Hi Frank
    Wondering if you can help me.
    I have a W1070 which the lamp recently blew in and exploded.
    I purchased a replacement lamp with module and inserted it, but when I plugged in the power cord to fire it up, the standby light doesn't come on and hence no power is evident.
    I gave it a good clean by removing the fans and circuit boards to ensure I got all the glass out.
    In your experience do you have any idea what the problem could be and what further trouble shooting I could try.
    Thanks

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 роки тому

      Make sure you have the lamp cover secure. It will act unplugged unless the door is pushing the interlock switch. Also make sure your new lamp is a decent brand. Amazon is full of knockoffs parading as quality. Most important is the front lens of the assembly. It needs to have the same color coating as the old lamp. If not it can melt the optics.

      @@FixitFrank Hi Frank
      I held down the button you mention and still no power coming through.
      Could there be something else I could check?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 роки тому

      @@clintrowley3740 I do. Check the thermal breaker wire. It's the thing in the blower fan that plugs into the power supply. Make sure it's plugged in. Also make sure the main board is plugged into the low voltage pins properly. It might be worth taking it all apart again and slowly rebuilding. I've had to do that two or three times on occasion. Basically if it had power when you took it apart, it should have power when you reassemble it. Most likely something simple like that thermal breaker wire was missed.

      @@FixitFrank Hi Frank thanks for the reply.
      That's the thing, it hasn't had any power since the lamp blew, no light on the the led buttons, just nothing.
      After the lamp blew and I received the replacement I installed and gave a quick clean out of glass with a vacuum cleaner.
      When it didn't fire up I started searching internet for tips and that's when I came across your videos and started disassembling things to clean and check for other possible causes in the hope it would fire up when put back together.
      Maybe it's the lamp. I thought when I first installed it the socket that connects it to the power didn't seem very snug, not like the original one when I pulled it out anyway, not sure if that could be the reason.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 роки тому

      @@clintrowley3740 ohhh. I missed that somehow. I thought it was working. In that case it could be a few things. However I'd start with that little round fuse near the power plug. If it's more than that, it could be much deeper. Power supply and ballast. But don't worry about that until you verify the fuse. You will need an ohm meter(multimeter).

    Hi, I have same projector stuck in download mode, any pointers?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 роки тому

      It all depends how you got into download mode. Sometimes it can be from incorrect firmware, other times from USB cable issues. Usually you can get out by unplugging the power cord, then hold in Power and Auto on the keypad. While holding them down, plug in the power. The LED should flash 2x (I think). That should work. If not, you might have corrupted the NAND flash and it might need deeper service.
