Where would you install a Wi-Fi light switch?
To setup a routine for the front porch light and to be able to turn it on when we are not at home.
To reset your cameras like ring if your away from home and its not working. That is one reason.
The included instructions are less than adequate and your video helped walk me through perfectly. This was a great help!
Glad this video is here, despite the issues I had with stuffing the wires into the hole this was exactly what I needed for the install.
PERFECT. I'm definitely not an electrician and this step by step tutorial assisted me in installing my KASA Dimmer Switch.
Thank you so much. I hooked it up to my inside switch that runs my outdoor Christmas lights. No more remembering to go down the stairs before bed. Merry Christmas to you and yours. 🎄 I was really surprised because we built our house in ‘92 and the electrician actually had neutral wires added.
Thanks for the tutorial. As a result, my kasa switch installation proceeded very smoothly!
Thank you for a very detailed explanation of the install. It makes sense now, can’t wait to get home and install mine.
Super helpful. Very well explained.
This is the most informative video I have watched so far. I immediately subscribed, thank you! Looking forward to your other videos (hoping you have one for replacing a ceiling light)
Thanks for subscribing! I have one on replacing a bulb in the ceiling, but not the fixture: ua-cam.com/video/_xyp2MkThUo/v-deo.html
Great video! Thank you for the walkthrough and thoroughness. It gave me confidence and I was able to install successfully!
Excellent work explaining and demonstrating. I was anxious but found your instructions and tips made it easy. Thank you.
Great to hear!
Just what I was looking for. I have my outdoor string lights on a kasa smartvplug and it works flawless. Now I want to dov the same with my outdoor entrance lights.
Liked and subscribed! Thank you!!
Great video, well done. Setup was easy and made me excited to do more!
Great to hear!
Well done video, thank you!
Great step by step video.
Super helpful to me, I was having problems with neuture terminal connection, thank to you, solved it
Awesome!
Thank you! You helped me get this working.
Glad I could help!
Well explained man thanks a lot.
Sure thing!
You are a life saver
Great video. Thanks!
You bet!
Great Rundown!
Thank you!
Hello thank you so much for this video! My question is this what happens if the load in the line gets switched my contractor put it in went home and now it’s just blinking the light that is, is blinking on and off and the TP Link smart dimmer is in pairing mode or Wi-Fi set up mode but it won’t let me connect my phone to the TV links wireless code and then it asked for a pass word that I don’t know
Great video. Very clear on what you need to do and how to get it done. Going to try this out for myself and switch out all my regular switches. Do you know what to do with a light switch that has 3 switches in 1?
Same question
so do you have the new 2023 versions?
they are wire tail now.
no markings for line and load on the switch wires
Thank you.
I put one of these in today it was my first time trying to do this . At first it was a little tricky for me with the wires but I got a green light and hooked up to my Wifi the only thing is now the light ( flood lights ) will not come on . I am wondering did I do something wrong ? I did black to black neutral to neutral and got a green light but lights still won’t come on . Any suggestions ? Thank you 😊
One note that drove me crazy. I installed a smart switch to control my front porch and the switch was one in a gang of three. When I pulled the existing switches all the white neutrals were tied together as expected. I pulled one the neutral wires and attached it to the new switch. The light blinked on/of every second but would not connect to Wifi. Then I tried another neutral wire and it seemed to work however the next day nothing worked. ONLY when I left all the neutrals tied together and tied the white neutral switch wire into the neutral bundle did everything work as advertised.
Thank you for sharing that. Otherwise worked fine? I have a gang three where I don't need dimmers as they for outside lights... But just want them to be smart (timing etc from phone). Hooe this works for my needs
You always want the neutrals tied together….
Yes all the same colors go together
Quick question...where did you buy your swtich box, please? What I have doesn't match the size of my light switch
hi, is there an external mounting box installation? or junction box.?
Hello, don't know if its been asked, I read on the amazon reviews that some are having problems with multiple lights (not clear if with a 3 way configuration), I presently have 3 led dimmable down lights on a single manual dimmer. Will this switch work with my setup? Thanks
Mine is hooked up to two LED recessed lights and it works just fine. I would think 3 would work but you're right it does seem like there's a limit to this switch based on other comments.
How do I go about the install if I have 3 black wires on the current switch?
Could you do one by pulling power from an outlet to an led driver?
Great video. QQ: My house is from the 30's and there is some older electrical wiring. I was going to replace the dimmer in my dining room with this but there isn't a neutral wire, just two black wires to work with. Any ideas?
The only option I know of that will work without a neutral wire is the Lutron Caseta line. It's pricy compared to most of the other options, but way cheaper than rewiring!
I have several TP Link outlets that I never had any trouble getting on them on Wi-Fi. Now when I install the kasa HS 220 I go through the process then go to my settings choose the Wi-Fi for tplink for a few seconds and then says it says no Internet connection. I've troubleshoot this for four hours now maybe you have a solution. Thanks
You did good. However I see this will not fix my issue in that I want to install 5 sconce lights plugged directly in the out lets in the wall. What would you recommend? And still be able to have a switch like this to control them all? Thanks
A Wemo plug. Wemo outlet. Or another brand of a smart plug.
I have multiple Wemo smart outlets.
Wemo is linkable to Alexa also for voice control.
Heyy I have only 3 cables ( white black, ground), simple pole ,how can I connect this?
When you have several switches in the box where you are installing the dimmer switch, and 2 sets of bundled white wires, how do you know which bundle to wire the dimmer's neutral switch to?
Same question... Anyone??
@@MStar10 Doesn't matter. Neutral, by definition, is common in the house.
I also have a red wire (3 way control), what should I do?
Remember a wifi switch is ONLY as good as your wifi signal? Put the switch to far from your wifi router you WILL have problems Thanks for the great video
Hello if I have more lines than you have and the ones that come to the switch are red and black how I do it
Hi I have two black wires and a red wire and white. Can I still wire this? Or need a different switch? Thanks for your time!
That red wire should be a traveler so you'll need a version that's compatible with a three-way switch. Looks like the Kasa KS230 kit is what you'd need.
you made it easy to install, thanks
Glad it helped you!
I dont like directly connecting to Wifi. Are there any HUB that support these switches?
can be paired with a hue light? phillips
I dont have a line and load, i just have white black and ground wires. Will this work still?
Please allow me a moment to be a child. I legit laughed at 5:55 when he said "I always like to pull on the nut".
i could not deattach the wall plate from the switch, it prevented me from screwing the switch to the wall. How did you resolve this problem?
Have you noticed that if you set the default brightness very low like say 1% when you turn on the switch it takes several seconds for the light or lights to lit up? Even with the setting of fade on(instant)? If I set the default brightness at 50% or higher then they lit up immediately after pressing the switch. This happens regardless of pressing the switch on the wall or using the app. I have several of the Kasa switches(HS220s and KS220s) and they all behave like this so I think it is normal, but seems strange.
Yes, I have noticed that. I figured it was an issue with the LED bulbs... not enough power to get them started... but you're right, it could be the switch itself.
Can you set it to fade on at a certain time? And is the length of time it take to fade on adjustable?
Yes, can do that by going into the Smart Switch device settings.
Just put mine in Thanks to your video!!! Thank you for such a great video!
now to configure it to Alexa
You are so welcome!
Hi, great video...I am novice at electrical work, I have load, neutral, and hot,, but don't have ground wire. But it will work without ground wire?any advice??
The box should have a ground screw. See if you can wire it to that.
Where can I find the link if I do not have the 3rd wire?
The wires attached to my light switch are black, green and blue (all J-hooked). On the inside, what I believe to be a wire nut (it looks different than in the video) houses a blue, red and black wire. Can anyone point me in the right direction on a type of switch and/or tutorial? Thank you!
Hi, i have 5 of these at my home but I tried installing this one in my office at church and the light was dim and didn’t get bright. Any reason you think this happen?? Thank you.
There is a calibration process you can go through in the app to set the dim limit so you might try that
hi i want to know how many light bulbs can i atach to it, i d have to cover a long hallway, of about 20 lights
I can't answer that exactly but I did see that some people have had issues dimming multiple bulbs. Mine controls two and it works just fine. I'd go with something that's from an actual electric company like the Lutron Caseta line. Also, this article helps explain how to determine the max number of LED bulbs on a dimmer: blog.lightbulbs-direct.com/led-dimmer-switch-compatibility/
Can I group different switch’s together and turn the group on and off. Example, “exterior lights only” group?
Yes, you can add a group in the app to control multiple switches and even smart plugs all at the same time.
I do this via Alexa as I can group different lights/switchers from different manufacturers together - I can literally say “Alexa turn house lights on” and every light in the house turns on at 100% brightness. For lamps etc you can use the Alexa plug or a smart bulb, but it gives you some great options in terms of home security.
Mine have 3 black wire. Another 3 white and 3 ground wire.
I hooked it up last night, the power is on, i was able to connect to wifi, light is on but the dimmer doesn’t work. I read alot of comments and peoples have same problem
Does this process change if you have for example a four gang light switch?
Also where can I get a four gang rocker rocker plate that is compatible with the KASA smart switch
Same process. All you need is decora plates… or screw-less decora
I don’t have neutral on mine only ground, load and line. How can I install it without the neutrals?
This wifi switch won't work without a neutral. The only brand I know that will is Caseta: geni.us/jiDqBez
@@TopHomeownerthere’s no other work around
What light bulbs are compatible with this? Can you use any bulb or does it have to be smart as well?
It’s a switch. It controls a lightbulb. Not a smart bulb. No smart bulb needed.
Everything works, except the smart switch is too big to fit completely in the wall socket/box! Seems like I'm not the only one with this problem
I don't have a circuit breaker, just a fuse panel with round screw fuses. Should I just unscrew the fuse to turn power off?
Yes, just unscrew the fuse in that case.
Can this be voice controlled through Alexa and can you tell through Alexa to turn it on 25%? Thank you for your excellent tutorial.
Yes, absolutely. I have Alexa adjust mine all the time
Where does the red wire go to within the outlet? I have all the other 3 and the red cord… please advise
The red wire is typically used for a three-way light (multiple light switches can control the same light). The one in this video is for a single switch only but I think Kasa makes a three-way version too.
Is it working with Siri and homekit ?
I have four wires coming out of my electrical box. Two white and two black will this product work on my electrical box?
Yes, it sounds like you have the neutral wires you need to make it work
Does anyone know how you reset it to connect to the wifi again if it disconnects?
Is the Lutron the cheapest non neutral switch you could find? That’s from $17 right up to $99😊
Yep, thats the only one I could find! Big price difference for sure!
Is it possible to use a cover plate other than the one provided?
Possibly, but it seems like a specialized plate
Hey man! When you "turn the switch off" manually, can you still just reactivate it via the APP? Or is power physically switched off to the light unit.
it can be switched with the app. the "switch" is not a switch. its more of a toggle button. so that means each press is changing what state its in
Yes we operate the switch manually, through Alexa, and the app interchangeably.
Twist your wire connections! We have so many service calls that have loose connections when you don't have a good mechanical connection
Yup
anyone have a link to the 3 way dimmable switch??? or any details
Looks like it's hard to come by right now. I can't find it in stock anywhere.
Does the Wi-Fi have to be 2.4 GHz or can it be 5 GHz? Thanks!
2.4GHz only
For some reason every night at the same time my switch turns off which is shutting off my ring cameras in the front yard. I have not been able to figure out what is causing it to happen. Do you have any ideas because it’s not clear what’s going on in the settings I have two more of these installed they don’t do it
Sounds like the ring camera is getting power through that box. If this didn't happen with your old switch and you have multiple sets of wires in the box, you'll need to identify the wire(s) that go to the light fixture and hook up the other wires with pigtail connections so the power continues though.
@@TopHomeowner Turns out the amazon alexa app was shutting it off. I had to change up the settings and it fixed it. Thanks for responding.
What do you do if wifi lights are not blinking. What do you do
Does it work with SmartThings?
No it doesn't. This is a WiFi only switch and SmartThings uses Zigbee and ZWave protocols. I have a mixture in my house and it's not too bad since we mainly use Alexa to control everything.
I do not see any stamps of approval for use in US
If WiFi goes out, does the switch start blinking or anything?
No, there are no issues with using the light normally without WiFi.
it works with 220v? Thanks!
Only 110v
I cannot believe I can't find a video of this switch where someone actually activates the switch. Can this switch be used by pressing a button on the switch?
Yes, its kind-of like a paddle switch that when you push in at the bottom, it turns the light on or off. I say "kind-of" because it stays in the same position... theres a spring behind it so when you push it in, the spring pushes it back out. The dimmer is controlled by the top two buttons as well (actual buttons). Hope this helps!
@@TopHomeowner lol, thanks!
Will ot work on a celling fan?
No, it won't unfortunately. Fans draw too much power for this.
Does it work for LED bulbs?
Yes, actually I'm running two Cree dimmable flood lights off of mine. Make sure you get high-quality and dimmable bulbs
What kind of light bulbs do you use?
I installed 125W Cree LED bulbs in this location
so you cant dim the lights from the switch, only the app?
You can dim from the switch too. It has two buttons at the top.
What do you do if theres no neutral wire ?
You have to go with the Lutron Caseta. It's the only smart switch on the market that will work without a neutral wire.
Thanks for glossing over the hassle of getting the switch to actually connect to the software. I've been fighting with it all day.😩
Is it ok to NOT connect the neutral wire?
It requires the neutral wire to function. If you don't have a neutral in the box then this won't work and you'll need to go with the Lutron Caseta line
Painter was getting in and out huh. Call him back and ask why did you paint my outlet wires????
You'd be surprised what you'll find when you start opening things up in a house!
what happens if neutral wire is not present?
If you don't have a neutral wire, the only smart switch solution I've found that will work is the Lutron Caseta
Bro there is no nutual wire in my house switch
In that case, the only option I know that will work is the Caseta line from Lutron.
Installing the plate back on impossible
You didn't explain what kind of light bulbs you already had installed. Your original switch was not a dimmer so did you know your existing bulbs would support dimming? Are they incandescent or LED?
The old bulbs were incandescent so I wanted something more efficient
I followed your instructions to a T and everything went well, and I know nothing about electrical
Could a 13 teen year old do this
I'm a firm believer that age is just a number. That said, I'd still recommend supervision :)
Its not a guess on which black is your hot… the hots are jointed together…. With a stinger coming off of the bundle to the switch (line side)… the load is the single black wire, which jumps up to the fixture
Trois fils sa225
All i see are 3 wires 1 coper ground, one white, and one black
If those are all connected to the old switch, then it should be as simple as disconnecting them from the old and attaching them to the new switch.
@@TopHomeowner This may be incorrect information. It MAY be the old way of wiring switches. The power source is in the light box. black = line (live from light box), white= switched load back to light. ground is still ground. White should have a black sleeve or tape on it to indicate it is being used as a black wire.
So since their is only 3 wires, black is line, white is line and and copper is ground which means it connects to the green on the tp-link. Which also means the white wire on the tp-link is not connected to anything?
@@jhocadsonarchelus786 If the white wire, on the smart switch is not connected to anything the switch will not work. In the situation described above, a smart switch will not work. For a smart switch to work it needs 1-line (power in - black) 1-load (power out - black or red) 1- common (white wire) and 1 ground (bare copper)
Couldn’t get the dimmer to work, it’s at 100 %. I have green, white, black and red wires
Are your lightbulbs dimmable?
Won't connect to wiifi
Do you have a strong wifi signal in that part of the house? I found this video that has some tips as well: ua-cam.com/video/iVDKqoVCDaM/v-deo.html
Check - this will only connect to the 2.4ghz wifi and your router broadcasts in both 2.4 and 5ghz (almost all the smart home stuff only connects to 2.4ghz) what can happen is that it is connecting to the 5ghz network instead of the 2.4ghz and unable to “connect successfully” shall we say. The solution is usually to go into your router (via a web browser using the address in the back of the router) and turn off the 5ghz broadcasting until you have it set up. I do this especially with the Kasa bulbs as they seem to love the 5ghz network even though they cannot use it.
