    Was helpful. My original dimmer switch had no markings for load vs line and both of those wires were black. So that took a little bit of trial and error.
    One thing that might have helped is if you showed usage of the voltage detector prior to shutting off power so that people would know what they were looking for.

    The wiring was easy, setting up with the KASA app is a pain. I have 3 different styles of switches and about 30 smart bulbs that all scan in through other apps and connect to Alexa seamlessly. This one, with the KASA app has proven difficult. It requests that my wifi is connected to my phone, 2.4 like ally other smart devices, then immediately disconnects my phone from the wifi and connects to the switches wifi. It then tells me it's not connected to the internet, and prompts me to select a network. So I do, my 2.4 network again and try again. It just loops back through this process over and over.

    • @TPLINKTECH

      Unfortunately that is not possible for the video. In practical application what you can do is remove both switches and place a wire nut on each wire. restore power and using a non-contact voltage tester see what wire is energized. This will tell you which box is the primary and where the HS210 should be installed. Turn off the power and then install as direct to complete the setup. If you are not comfortable playing with the electrical wiring we would suggest contacting an electrician.

    • @lammy2886
      @lammy2886 5 років тому +3

      @@bobbybrown614 As an electrician, I can answer this for you...
      TL;DR This dimmer switch needs constant power to work properly, which is something a 3-way (and 4-way) switch configuration doesn't have.
      You could use this in a 3-way or 4-way system , ONLY if you disable (wire straight through) any other switches in the loop and install this on the switch that has the switch leg going to the light (or at the very least, rewire your existing switch wiring to carry the sw. leg or the hot through to the smart switch location). If you do not disable the other switches and someone flips the original other 3-way or 4-way dumb switch (which will not turn the lights on and also at the same time power off your dimmer switch), you will not be able to turn your lights on at all until the flipped switch is returned to the original position and power is restored to the dimmer switch and it is reconnected to wi-fi.
      However, with your admission that you are "not an expert on circuits", I would recommend you seek the services of a qualified electrician (or at least someone who knows what they are doing)....chances are you'll probably have to pay them...which in turn erases any savings from only buying one switch instead of the proper 3-way kit.

      @@lammy2886 Thanks I think I see what you're saying. These switches need constant power for the wifi components to work in them? How does the 2 pack of switches solve that dilemma?

    yeah, these switches are great but they suck in terms of color matching with other wall plates,. as they look so ugly , so off when we use other plates,. i have not seen one matching wall plate, that matches the color of the kasa switches,. also, i noticed that the switch looks so recessed/off from the wall plate, when we use any other wall plate,. did anyone notice this or am the only person,. and if there are n number of users seeing the same, then am not sure why Kasa is silent, and not releasing 1. their own wall plates, and 2. change the color and the the sizing of their switches so that it fits some brands,. I

    • @TPLINKTECH
      @TPLINKTECH  3 роки тому

      We are not silent on this but we don't design products to match with other brands. The reason other can and often do is because often other brands are made by OEM and hence share design and materials with other products. TP-Link and Kasa for the most part are designed and manufactured in house. As for making multi-gang plates we also don't do this because its not part of our design. Also our plates are a snap-on design that may not be compatible with other non-TP-Link switches. This is why we make our products conform with Decora standards so generic plates can be used if you so choose. Though color matching may be a problem in these situations.

Is that your standard to make a switch not to match with ANY other wall plate? Funny that you mentioned about the standards. If you ever tried to plug in your switch in ANY wall plate, you can clearly see that there is a big recess like look, as if your switch is way back in the wall, while the wall plate is protruding towards the front,. very unpleasant to view. If your switches are not intended to be used with ANY other wall plates in the market, then I would agree, as I know it ONLY matches to the plate that was designed for it.. but imagine if people want to use a KASA on a standard wall plate, be it 2,3,4,5 gang, then your SWITCH will be looking like an ORPHAN switch that is left out from the wall plate. I may be wrong, as I have not see a SINGLE wall plate that perfectly MATCHES with KASA switches,. even a standard decora switch will be perfectly FIT with any standard wall plate in the market,.

    • @TPLINKTECH
      @TPLINKTECH  3 роки тому

      @@stevemoody8506 Yes, in fact I use a KC210 in a multi-gang housing. The reason there is a recess is because the Kasa switches are lager than a non-wireless switch, and because the wall box may not be as deep as needed when you take into account the house wiring that also takes up space. This is because they have to be so to house the wireless components. In the newer switches coming out we have done our best to address this but still can't guarantee there won't be any recess.

What I can say is that TP-Link link is a direct manufacture of these products we are not an OEM like many other manufactures out there. As I am sure you are aware OEM make products for multiple companies as a result and because the same materials are used those product tend to match to each other better. TP-Link's products being made in house we likely do not have the same color index these OEMs are using. Also keep in mind that our products are designed to be used primarily in a single-dim with the provided faceplate. The android lady doesn't explain: a) what the green wire is or, more importantly, b) how to install if this is a new switch. I can't take a picture of the "existing" wires when I'm literally wiring up a new switch. And just swapping the colors in the app between off-white and pasty green is completely helpless.

      The Green wire is often the Ground wire. This can often be just a exposed copper wire but also is not required. So if you don't know which wire is ground or if you don't have one you can just cap the wire on the switch and leave it not connected.
      I would caution, though, if you are unfamiliar with electrical wires, we do not recommend doing a self-install. instead we recommend hiring an electrician to install the product for you. This recommendation is out of an abundance of safety.

    The instructions provided by the TP Link app are terrible. This one is not much better. The instructions state to identify the load (to the light) and line (hot from breaker) wires but they then just say to connect the wires to the switch. They don't mention that in very fine print on the back of the switch that the load (red screw) and line (black screw) connections are identified. Took me about 4 UA-cam videos to find someone who actually explained this thoroughly. TP needs to have someone test their instructions. Very poor. BTW, the dimmer switch works very well once installed.

      The video has instructions to label the wires, then later says use said labels to connect the wires to the right screw. Each screw has a label of which wire its intended for. Aside from literally saying connect the live wire to the black screw and the load wire to the red screw the instructions are pretty clear.
