- How to Remove Write Protection from USB Drive in Windows
So you have a USB or Micro SD write-protected in Windows 10 or Windows 11 I will show you how to remove the Write Protected drive. You can use toolkits from EaseUS Partition Master to remove write protection - bit.ly/4cpPKKk Remember their is always a chance your device is broken and also remember that some of these methods will format the drive, so if you have data on the drive that you are trying to recover, be careful on what methods you try.

Can you use this information for dvd
@Britec09 I wish I had thought about you, before breaking 3 sd card mini's about 3 weeks ago, I don't know how or why they did that protected mode, I have nothing to hide
Sir i can't do
My pendrive is not able to format in cmd, mini tool, Rufus etc
Whenever I try it automatically ejects it and don't allow it to format it
I have tried this but it not work, can't format or delete volume
Thanks so much, mine worked, 😌,you earned a subscriber
Thank you for this! The last way of reformatting without downloading software worked as my USB was stuck with write protection.
I downloaded the mini tool but my pendrive it still showing up as read only. I am confused on how to fix it, since it won't give me the option to delete the partition.
I faced this problem: In a U3 portable USB stick I HAVE TWO PARTITIONS, a CDFS and Another, the latter format it in the disk manager, but the CDFS is like a CD Drive, write protected, any idea how to delete the CDFS partition, Has 3 U3 exe files...well?
Thank you, deleting all partitions and creating a new one works for me.
Hey mate your a Effing Genius man been struggling with my 1tb hard drive and i used the cmd prompt followed your steps now I have full access to it again! Thanks alot brother
are u a bot how tf theres no operations tab
I thought i had destroyed by usb and the last piece of software saved me thank you so much
I get this from the command prompt:
DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
See the System Event Log for more information.
yes, me too, tell me if you get any solution
@@thetechistview3180 it was corrupted, had to bin it :(
Thank you so much the diskart part actually fixed my usb stick.
I have a Sandisk flash drive that is write protected. The tutorial didn't help.
I tried reformatting and got the same message "The disk is write protected". It has a Sandisk Secure access.exe file. Not sure if that is the reason.
my case
no idea why this has to be so difficult, thank you for the help
Diskpart says it cleared readonly but it didn't. Downloaded and ran MiniTool Partition Wizard but I don't get a Delete Partition option. I can read the files on the drive, but I cannot modify or delete any. I also cannot format the drive. At a loss as to how to gain access to this drive again. It is unknown by both users as to how the drive got set to readonly in the first place. There is no hardware switch on the drive.
I tried everything you mentioned, but in diskpart, I got the following message:
"DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
See the System Event Log for more information."
I don't know how this got set to write-only in the first place. Very upset about this.
Did u find a solution?
@@Manishnair222 Nope. Doesn't come close to working.
These methods didn't work for me. For the Regedit, I didn't have the option for Read Only. For the Partition Fix solution, my USB wasn't partitioned. It seems as though my USB doesn't want read-permission. How is this possible?
I couldn't tell if the drive was damanged as my device manager view was VERY
different to yours.
I frequently use USB flash drives to boot live Linux operating systems on a PC. I have found it's a nightmare to get the drive back to 'normal' after flashing the Linux image to it; it does something strange to the boot sector. All kinds of weird errors including write protect, unable to unmount and even bad media! Even using CFDISK to delete all partitions doesn't help! I've actually made a disk image of a working empty USB flash drive, and I can flash that if one starts misbehaving and won't let me reformat it properly.
Thank you sir! Your video helped me. I’ve been trying to remove the write protection for over a month. I was able to get it done with the miniTool option. Finally😅
Thank you! It helped me with my USB! Excellent video!
Very good video. I thought it was Michael Caine in his hey days saying "Open the bloody disk!" you also explained it like an Open University Lecturer on BBC 2 in the 70s. Well done and easy to understand!
Lol!😂
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've been chasing that solution for months! I got mine messed up working with Linux. Fixed now!
Tried the all including minitool but the drive is read only so no menu comes up to delete or anything when right clicking on it.. can't be wiped.
What is wrong with an sd card where the files just keep coming back when I delete or even format it?
Thanks for making this video. However my drive still displays read only. Nothing worked. I have tried 2 different adapters and plugged the micro sd card directly into a card read. The card is the camera card from a WYZE camera that is no longer in use. 32gb card. I can't do anything with Minitool Partition Wizard. It shows Read Only and no options are displayed except to backup data. :(
I've been surfing on UA-cam to find a method to remove my write protection on my SD card. None of them work. Please let me know if you have any other methods
Great video! Have a Samsung 64 g USB with Linux OS bootable that only used 2 gigs.
I used redit to delete the file, then cmd diskpart to clean and complete format now I'm using the drive as a recovery drive.
Thank you.
How
nothing works for me, ive got a bunch of USBs I cant use anymore because everything that seems to work for others doesnt for me. ive tried partition wizard and it doesn't even let me click on the usb like yours. mine also says read only in red.
when im going to use the wizard, i cant cick right on the disk, it says it is a readonly disk, what should i do with a readonly disk
pls help
after so many videos, ur video First method worked for me thanks Mr.
Min tool doesnt work for me, when i right click on my fd, it does not showing any option, and theres a text saying read only
Thanks this is just what i needed, I'll try this 👍
Welcome
hello britec, i followed every step and i tried to clean it with cmd, but after i entered the command ''Clean'' it still says error and it's write protected, what is the solution for that?
Didn"t Work! 😥
I just used my friends cell phone that had a sim card slot for removable memory and had it format to portable storage instead of internal storage. And that worked.
From 10 videos I watched, this is the only one which helped me! thanks a lot.
Very helpful video. The last method helped formatting my usb stick... Thank you
THX so much for making this you have saved me!
Thank you. Diskpart helped. USB is not write protected right now, so I can format it.
The first command line solution worked for me so far.
Thank you!
My USB flash drive mysteriously got Write protected on its own, I have tons of movies, Tv shows, educational business videos, important personal documents and family photos, window apps, and more. The majority of these files are irreplicable, I been saving and collecting them for years. But now for some odd reason it got Write Protected out of nowhere, I can't rename files, can't copy, paste, delete, defrag or access some files. If I follow these instructions, would it format my flash drive, and delete everything, because I need it fixed but I'm very afraid I'm going to lose everything. I don't have extra storage to backup 60G of files. Please let me know ASAP.
Excellent video, thank you.
A usb became write protected while plugged into my arlo pro base unit, I can read off it but not format it, I'm going to give this ago when I get home Brian, cheers big fella !!
Are you home?
@@Suspended_ Not yet!
I didn't have the Write Protection in my registry. Once i added it I could format the USB drive. Thanks mate
Mini Tool worked for me! many thanks for this video mate!!
You're a life saver sir! the first method worked for me!
I tried the all of the above, none worked, the last tip i used, i got this message: " DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
See the System Event Log for more information. " maybe this usb drive s fate is to the trash can.
same for me same error
Same
@@AwaisKhan-dt5eg i replaced my card reader and was fine
What about Hard drives? All mine suddenly write protected. Win 11 update???
Command prompt worked perfect ! Thanks big guy! 👍
Really other people were just maniupulating for the audience for the views but you helped me sir thank you
Hey man you’ve just earned a new follower mini tool helped thanks a lot😊
Clear and simple. It worked at first try. Thank you!!
you went to disk management and said go to device manager, what am I looking for in device manager?
Thanks, Jim or Tim for the video I have a Sdcard that will not work in my system I cannot read it or write to it, or format it, and windows won't allow me to format it and the SDcard is not Locked I will try your method to see if I can get it working it's a 32gig SD Card from Sandisk, thankyou!
I still haven’t found any method that works on my original Windows install drives. Annoying having to buy a drive if I want to use the latest installer.
Whenever I have a stubborn USB drive that just won't format or un-partition with Windows 10/11 Disk Management, I use my Ventoy USB drive and an old laptop and boot into Hiren’s BootCD based on Windows 10 PE x64. There is a specific type of disk management software included within called AOMEI Partition Assistant that never fails to format, or de-partition any USB flash drive or SD/microSD card
The solution whereby we use diskpart, clean, create partition primary, and format worked for me!
Thank you Britec09, now my USB drive back to normal 👍
Glad I could help
Thank you sir for this amazing explanation. But if you can also explain how to format a cd that is write protected? Thanks again!
Not Working Brain, In partition Wizard It's showing read only
What to do ?
Very informative video Brian, many thanks.
Very welcome
@@Britec09nope for my usb drive sandisk 32 bb drive nothing works. I have so many usb drives and all work fine on any laptop but this drive doesn’t work at all. I can access all data on that drive and watch movies from it too but no software or diskpart works. I tried a low level format utility as shown in several videos but nothing worked 😂. It says disk I/O errors on format and files and partitions are still there. I think sandisk has a certain problem on usb drives. Don’t let it fill up too much or you will loose access to the drive permanently. It permanently turns off write ability on it.
Thank you very much. The registry edit worked!
My usb drive is working well but it is encrypted. I dont know how /who enrypted it. Any ways these steps not working for me. If anyone know why its happening please help me ( I converted my usb drive as a Windows instalation pendrive ones, then i revert it into normal one and used it for almost 1 week. After that it suddenly changed as write protected pendrive )
This is the only video that actually helped me out
thank u the CMD clear attribute method fixed it for me
As the video notes indicate the write protection could be the result of the flash drive failing and reverting to read only mode to allow you to recover your data off the device. I have had several flash drives fail like this.
I agree, that is the main cause.
Yep, and then destruction of the device is necessary as you cannot wipe a read only device.
How do you destroy a flash drive so the contents cannot be read? Smashing it or blocking the port
@@jakemeals pull the circuit board from the plastic case and run it through a paper shredder.
@@jakemeals Burn it.
I installed the software and I could delete all the partitions, thank you.
After all this time, finally i found you, thank u 😊
Did everything no result 😔😢
that's disk management not device manager
MiniTool Partition Wizard has zero options to do anything with the stick. it shows that READ ONLY in red.
yep same
Same for me ..did u found the ans
Yeah same here...
Did anyone find solution?
No solution contacted the service centre and replaced it
Worked perfectly. Thanks!
Nothing worked even miniTool says read only and I can't do anything to the drive
I'm kinda stuck on this. I can't remove the partitions because it's set on read only and I can't format it since it has write protection. I can't even clean or scan it properly
I tried every single method here, but to no avail! Do you have any suggestions?!
Thank You!! Finally got this issue sorted
Many thanks Britec. 1 hour later after trying nearly everything to clear "write protect" on a usb drive, then MiniTool Partition Wizard removes "write protect" in less than 5 seconds. Cheers Mate.
how? free version??
Marketing bs
it is not working on me, i tried everything, and still could not format my flash drive, I even use minitool
Tried all of these steps. No worky. Can't run Partition Wizard because it won't run in Vista 32-bit. The final step, formatting in diskpart(cmd) didn't work either. just sat at 0 percent forever. So I guess I'm screwed?
I had the exact same issue you had, on Windows 11. Partition Wizard saved the day. Thanks for the video!
Same here
I just created a partition and everything worked well 👍
It helped. Thanks man, may God bless you.
Hi, Brian. I've managed to clear a few write protected USB thumb drive with diskpart clear all, but it's always nice to see other options, so thanks.
Thanks for watching
I tried the diskpart as admin but nothing
@@watup110875 It worked for me a few times, but I had to use a partition program on the rest.
@@OlettaLiano that was only 3 I couldn't fix, sad didn't have fund for paid, most free I did try failed like the rest, but ol well, more tools for next I guess lol
@@watup110875 Did you try MiniTool Partition Wizard free version? I need to get back to GTA 5 because there's people to runover and cops to guy fight with. LOL
Sadly none of this worked for me, Minitool notes my disk as Read Only in the name block on the left hand side and won't give me a drop down list. Diskpart>clean also fails. The disk has only been used to play music in my car as an auxiliary device
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Thanks - this Video saved what little hair I have left on my head..😁
This guy deserves more, you just got a subscriber
mine says "diskpart has encountered an error: the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" 😟 help??
Thank you the last method works perfectly ❤
Can you send me the this mini tool software link
None of these worked for me sadly
The end Cmd prompt one was the closest to help but it had a error.
Thank you. Until I found this video I tried the command inputs over and over and was told each time that the write protect removal was successful. But format still didn't work. Somehow (I'm no guru) I got to computer management and clicked on the correct drive letter / number.
I could try format from that location and got the message there is an input / output error in the device. Previously I saw no such message.
I was using a card reader with a short cord because my laptop sd card slot doesn't recognize the card.
I changed to a different card reader and finally got success.
Truly helped me. Thanks, brother!
Super 🎉 thank you so much 🙏
Used this software also, still the write protection is not removed.😔
It won't even let me do anything to do the drive in partition wizard :(
Thank you bro!
First method works
CMD always works thanks Brite
When I tried to do clean on cmd it said error
Loved the video bro
Cheers !
I can't click anything in the software it only says read only, can someone help me?
4:55
same problem bro did you successful in removing protection?
Same
Yep...Big thanks for this video.
the minitool helps me a lot,its finally worked
Minitool it's just way better because there's an actual frame to look at and it's really simple to use. Anyways i recovered my USB stick! Nice video!
