I’m a long haul truck driver with a Skeletool CX that’s been on my belt loop every single day for 13 years. It’s beat to hell but still going strong. 48 states, over a million miles, thousands of miles of backpacking, and countless household chores. I no longer carry a pocket knife because of this tool.
I have the Leatherman Micra. I have learnt that 90% of my EDC cutting tasks is best served done by scissors than a blade. Additionally, when folded up, there are no sharp edges to catch on fabric. A very underrated multitool.
I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m sure the leather man is higher quality, and has tools that’d be cool when you need them. But I think overall the splice is better, if you’re goi g to go with just one. But if you’re carrying another thing that takes care of the other tools then yeah the micra
The awl is a great tool to use with your screwdriver to pre-drill a small hole to center and start your wood screws. Only needs to be deep enough to start the threads
On the SOG power pint, you don't have to fold out the tool to push the lock tab to close te opened tool. You can unlock the tool by opening (halfway) another tool, and you can close the tool. I love the size of the screwdriver! You can reach deep nested screws (e.g. battery cover screws in toys). It is pretty handy!
pair the powerpint with the 711L EDC ratchet (purchased from Amazon with the bits) and its good enough for most light weight tasks. The 711L ratchet is compatible with standard 1/4" bits and even leatherman flat bits and extender.
I know I'm replying to an older thread, but I wanted to add on to this for anyone watching this video in the future. I've got medium sized hands, and it is very easy for me to open the PowerPint just enough to get my thumb in behind one of the sides to press down on the lock mechanism which allows me to set the tool back into the frame no problem. It is still very much a one-handed tool in that regard because I'm only popping it open maybe an inch to get my thumb in for the press. The PowerPint is my go to EDC multitool.
SOG powerpint is my favorite tool of all time, used to carry the skeletool CX for a year, but was to big for me, then i rocked the gerber dime for about 8-9 months but allways wished it was just a tiny bit bigger, but then found the powerpint and its been in my pocket ever since, a good 5-6 month now. Ive done some mods to it like glued a magnet from a dead laptop to keep it closed so it desent open in my pocket, and ive filled down the bottleopenr to get a flathead driver.
I use a sog powepint in my sling bag.. And use Victorinox 0.6463.94 Nail Clip 580 Camo 66mm on my keys... I also have the leatherman ratcheting Drive kit thing for the sog... Kinda coves everything I need... But other than that I have a nitecore Tiki flashlight and a lighter bro mini for my fire needs lol... And I alway have my QSP canary neck knife or my vosteed raccoon folder (both in 14C28N... My favorite😋)...... O and I use a nite-ize G-Series clip
I got the Wave+, and as i can carry it on my belt, i dont really mind that it is a bit large. But as i dont need it very often, i dont carry it very often. For EDC, i have a keychain with: * Mecarmy "X1S" (tiny rechargeable 10180 battery keychain flashlight in titanium, which has very nice output and runtimes for EDC stuff) * pipe tool (for tobacco pipes) * keychain pipe stand (in the form of a leather "loop") * ExoTac NanoSpark (my favorite firestarter, with compartment for tinder inside) * emergency whistle (for SHTF situations when im hiking) * tiny Gerber folding knife/package opener Most people will think this is WAY too much for a keychain, but i actually really like this size, as: 1 - it doesnt bother me at all 2 - it makes it a lot easier to find my keys when im in a hurry 3 - it gives me a custom selection of the things i may need when im out and about. I think im gonna see if i can expand it with a compass and a flat head screwdriver (for adjusting the flame on my Zippo butane insert).
My boys (and mom) gifted me a Leatherman after I lost my Swiss Army knife around 30 years ago, when there was only a standard model as far as I know. It has ridden in my watch pocket every day since. It hasn't saved my life or anything but if I had a quarter for every time that I used it I'd be a wealthy man. I've even developed the habit of holding it in place with my right hand whenever I run so it doesn't pop out of my pocket. I'd absolutley die if I lost it. I agree that scissors are a must for me, stray nose-hairs etc. as you get older. The pliers, half-serrated blade and file are also go-to's. When other guys go to look for tools I just break out the leatherman and get it done.
Originally the executive “orange peeler” was designed for pipe cleaning. The back side of executive peeler is razor sharp and works great for opening boxes
I love my powerpint. Best tool i can get because i don't have the money for a Leatherman. I cant stop talking about how much i love this tool. The powerpint is very strong and fun to use. Thanks for the video!
Best combo is a pocket knife with a squirt on your keychain, so it's always with you. If you work in construction daily, i would change that to a more substantial multi tool, such as a skeletool or Wave if i used a multi tool a lot.
I've been carrying the Micra for about 10 years now I buy a new one every 2 years just because the spring of the scissors wears out. I carry it exclusively as an EDC grooming kit, the scissors make excellent finger nail clippers and the built in tweezers are very useful. I pair the Micra with the Leatherman Wingman so pliers are covered. It's a combination that has been working for me for years, so I probably won't be switching anytime soon.
I usually run a full size multitool, Gerber MP600 in a Clip&carry kydex sheath. I keep my Gerber Dime in a small pouch with a Gerber Shard & a Coldsteel Recon 1, that set up for real light minimalist carry. I keep a Leatherman Micra with Grimworkshop micro tools attached to the key ring with a Nitize S beaner. The SAK Bantam is a really good very light carry. It just depends on what environment I'm going to & what I expect to encounter when I get there. Enjoyed this video.
Leatherman signal in coyote tan + bit kits and bit extension + Leatherman Style CS everyday for the past 3 years. Perfect combination for all of my day to day needs
I owned the Wave (stolen) when it came out; purchased a Charge TTI eleven years ago (en route to Leatherman to get repaired); just purchased a Molle Black customized Surge and Free P4. I love the Surge but I like the versatility of the P4. I like my Leathermans for their differences!
On one hand, what a person chooses to carry is obviously a personal choice. But it’s nice to see other people liking and using the tools that work for me. I regularly carry the armbar drive, the dime and I recently picked up the key note to put my keys on my waist. When I need to slim down, I have the Victornox Signature Lite. It has the standard tools but with the pen and a flashlight. It’s not a solid dedicated light but I works in a pinch. 10/10 would recommend. But if he does re-release his version, I’m picking that up quick.
The minichamp is great, but I prefer the rambler. Don’t really miss the extra tools and it’s thinner and less expensive! Great video, definitely need to give more of these a try.
an interesting function I have found for the bottle opener is for blind keepers. I sometimes have to take a blinds down to get to a window for work multiple times a week. the edge keeper that is a metal box style can be a pain to unclasp. the bottle opener is the best thing ive found that doesnt bend or mar it.
For me the Victorinox Explorer is my EDC urban carry, and if I'm going out of the city I'm taking the Victorinox Farmer X due to having a saw. Never felt like I needed one handed opening though.
As for a knife multi tool, I usually carry the True Utility Smartknife+ -Blade, with serrations -built in flatblade screwdrivers -mini pry bar - 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" wrenches built in -1/4" bit holder (for storage), plus bit driver slot in the tip for use -mini file -metric and SAE rulers (almost useless due to short length) It's about $10.00 USD and has more tools and uses than the Gerber Curve, but due to size takes a role of primary pocket knife.
To close a tool on SOG Powerpint you can just partially open any other tool; it will disengage the lock and allow to close both tools easier than open pliers every time.
The best mini SAK is the midnite manager. No doubt about it. It’s much smaller than the mini Swiss champ but doesn’t have the pointless tools like the cuticle thing. You also get a pen and a flashlight. It rocks! i actually use mine all the time, Ito stays on my keys always. Knife law in the UK is really strict but i can ave that on my all the time without worrying about causing offence
Carried the Executive since high-school. I really like the orange peeler, it was a good box opener and flathead. The nail file was a good size 2 Philips head for light work, but I broke mine trying to loosen a really stuck screw.
I carry so many different knives. Usually 4 on or near me always. I like my Leatherman Kick in my EDC bag, Some form of 3 to 3 and a 1/2 inch folding blade in my pocket, a Spyderco bug on my necklace and a 2.5 inch fixed blade mounted to the straps on my EDC bag. Pretty much got any situation covered. I do like Victorinox though, just not as every day. I keep a Farmer in my other backpack for camping, bugout, whatever. It is there with some other stuff. Nice video! Oh.. One of my daughters got me my Mirca from ACE hardware years ago. Not sure if they still do knife stuff or not.
I'm an electrician by trade, and I carry a wingman every single day on my belt. I upgraded the pouch because the nylon wasn't cut for my line of work to the leather pouch, but I use it every single day. If I upgrade, I'm looking at a free. I only wish they would have scissors because I use them like crazy!
I really like the size and tool assortment of the Dime, but the pliers are WAY too flimsy. When I got one I bent it by trying to shape think wire. It was likely abuse. My second one I was careful with and bent the pliers anyway trying to twist with them. They seem tough for clamping, but not to twist
Sold my leatherman wave to upgrade to a P2. Once I made the bit driver mod like in your P2 mod video I have never looked back and fell in love with it even more. It’s in my edc rotation every other day depending on the day’s tasks. The P2 is the winner for me!
The squirt is my EDC, own 4 or 5 of them at this point. The scissors are small though well made, but the pliers cut too. Additionally the pliers with a little tweaking can be very precise, I use mine as tweezers having sanded and polished the tips inner surfaces to meet squarely. I'm rarely without one of these and a sharp knife to augment the small but serviceable knife on the leatherman.
Great video. I found that for the Powerpint you can fit a flat Leatherman bit under the pocket clip. I carry in fifth pocket as well and the flat/Phillips bit works with the bitdriver.
I have my Skeletool CX in my pocket and a Micra on my carabiner with my keys nearly every day when I leave the house. They make a good pair. I typically grab my Wave+ when I'm doing work around the yard or using the snow blower for replacing shear pins. The Powerpint has me intrigued!
The one thing I'll say about the Gerber Dime is that the bottle opener is probably the best one I've ever used and not just on compact tools. It just works so damn well.
I use an armbar slim.. screw driver and knife combo!! I use it everyday at work. The no locking screw driver hasn't been an issue because you can turn it 90 degrees and get extra torque.
I have to agree with you there. I myself have a Rambler which I EDC on a Lanyard around my neck each day, barely notice its there and use it fairly frequently. Personally I find the Minichamp bulked up by what I would consider useless tools on an EDC multitool. ( same for most Swiss army knifes tbh). really wish they did custom orders, so much potential for the perfect EDC multitool imo.
I always wished they would do a pS4 with a scissor spring that doesn't snap and metal scales like the micra. So many complaints of that hardened spring bar snapping when not in use.
Gerber Dime is worth its value and more. I was using the Leatherman Products when I was serving in the USAF. Later, Gerber provided multi-tools to us. Both had their Pros and Cons but the Leatherman was my preference. For the cost, the Gerber Dime is a good value.
If you do much camping, the Huntsman Swiss Army knife has a nice saw to make camp gadgets, a lace puller and leather working tools (like a point for sewing leather) to repair heavy fabric or leather items. Also the scissors, toothpick, tweezers and a couple of blades. Cutter and screw driver bottle opener. Not overly thick for having so many tools.
I have a few different multitools that are with me basically every day. I don't have all of the options that most of you have because of local knife laws (which means I can't carry a power pint :( or a wave) But if I am on site, I have my Rebar. When I am at school, my pencil case has a craftsman version of the micra (mostly used for the scissors and nail file/scraper). If I am just out and about, it is all about my juice c2. Other than pliers and screw drivers, for me it is all about the awl and the can opener. I cannot tell you how many times I have actually had to open cans with a multi-tool even though I was at someone's house.
Maintenance fitter and I daily a Skeletool CX. It's amazing and the perfect maintenance tool! I don't go a day without it - at home or at work. Actually... I've got 2!
I'm a fan of the Gerber Dime....The pliers are a slight flaw, in that the springs that lock them into place can fail if you put too much pressure on them...But, on the other hand, the tolerances at the tips are so tight that you can use them as stronger tweezers, to extract those splinters and tiny metal slivers, or even hairs! The bottle opener also can be used as a wrench to turn some common sizes of bolts and nuts. I hang it by the bottle opener too, attaching it by a mini carabiner to my keychain.
SOGG PowerPint has been my EDC for a couple of years. I may not be the pickiest guy, but I think the build quality, i. e. : machining w the gears is pretty great. I originally found it the most 'fidgety' to just sling open, but - using the pocket clip - it constantly fell open in my pocket, until I added a tiny magnet to the 'free' end. Now it's not a fidget item, but it solved the extremely annoying in-pocket self-deploying issue, which often made it very difficult to get out, because it would get really jammed up when open in a pocket.
My favorite compact edc is the victorinox manager. I carry it mainly so I can see the look on people's faces when they ask for a pen and I hand them a tiny pocket knife with a retractable pen.
I love my Gerber Armbar. As a traveling aircraft mechanic it has come in very handy. It’s in my pocket every day now. All of our oil is still in metal cans from the 50’s for some reason. The pointed awl has been great for puncturing oil cans to service engines. The screwdriver has been used numerous times to save me a trip to the toolbox in the service van. I carry this and the baby Fenix flashlight every day in my pocket. Would be lost without them.
The Victorinox Midnite Manager is, in my opinion, the absolute best small/tiny EDC option. I have a Mini Champ too, but it doesn't really add any useful capabilities to warrant the added bulk (i.e. the tiny second blade, tiny ruler, orange peeler, and cuticle pusher don't really add much value in my book and make it heavier on my keys). I also really like the SOG PowerLitre, which is very similar to the PowerPint, but with a corkscrew and assist rather than the second blade and file. My biggest gripe about this line, and I believe a major omission on SOG's part, is the lack of a decent sized flathead screwdriver. I've seen some people modify theirs to add one, but we shouldn't have to do that. Although out of production now, the Leatherman Juice CS4 was also excellent, but I admit a bit heavy and lacking in locking tools.
Late reply, but exactly my thoughts on the midnight manager vs the minichamp. I ground off the key ring and it lives in my coin pocket. Very useful. Thinking about modding the pen scale to house the tweezer and/or toothpick.
I have a Victorinox Ranger, it has "CAMPING" written on it with a little wigwam, I've had it about 7 years and couldn't live without it, the only thing it doesn't have is pliers, I've used the needle for a number of things, it's good for helping get splinters out.
Really disappointed Leatherman discontinued the squirt ps4!!!!! Love it, perfect size and tons of capability. Glad I have two! Not sure what I’d replace them with. Ugh.
I still pine for the Leatherman SideClip I had back in the day. I have not carried a multi-tool since I lost mine and found out I can not get them anymore. The biggest thing is how thin it is. 1/2" thick makes for a much more comfortable carry. 2nd is that the screw drivers come out the end and the whole thing opens up so you get incredible reach. Perfect for getting to screws in the bottom of a computer case.
I definitely think the nextool miniflagship deserved to be on this list. It is much better than the gerber dime for example. Although the construction is inferior to the leatherman micra, its scissors are more powerful and for the price it is almost unbeatable. If I lost it, it wouldn't hurt too much, which makes it ideal to carry in your pocket
Hey man, just want to let you know that you don’t have to open powerpint to close a tool. Just pull a different tool half way so it releases the lock and close both tools. Hope this helps
Great video. I've started carrying the Midnight Manager the past few years as a second tool. The pen is one of the most useful parts of it. But love having the quick access to the scissors. It's small enough that when I come home it stays in my pocket while my larger knife goes on my valet.
I've carried the SOG Power Pint for about 2 years now and it's a great tool. However, mine had a tendency to open up in my pocket exposing me to the sharp points of the tools. I had to remove all the screws and apply Loc-tite before reinstalling them and tightening them properly. Since doing this it has been a great tool I use almost daily in my profession. I agree wishing SOG would produce a Power Pint with a more premium build feel.
SOG PowerPint is also my favorite multitool. When it comes to the lock, I usually take out another tool and the lock lets go. This is faster than opening the pliers, pressing the lock, etc.
Great video. I've worked in security protecting certain client and stakeholders assets for 30+ years. Sometimes.. I have to drive across states to those stakeholders sites no matter what the weather is. I always have one multi tool with pliers in my bag with other gear and then a 2nd on me. In my bag, I have a old U.S.A. made Gerber, they used to give those out to certain military branches back in the day. But on me, at all times.. I have a very inexpensive multi tool with pliers that I bought for less than $15.00 at the time and I've used it for close to 7 years with no issues. Is it the BEST ? NO. Am I going to rip a part an engine with it? NO. But I tell you one thing.. It's helped me out in more that one time. And if I lose it on site or in between anywhere it's not going to hurt my wallet that much and I can buy another one easy enough.. There is tons of those cheap but useful ones out there. Have a great day.
I'd go just a bit smaller for a keyring knife, and use the Victorinox Rambler. Has most of the useful functions of the Minichamp, and also the correct orientation for the scissors and main blade opposite the ring, but is a lot more compact.
Leatherman Skeletool in my opinion it’s the best EDC multitool. It’s that thing that you forget that your carrying all the time with you till you have to fix something and you get the job done with it. And it’s the most good looking one from all that I’ve seen. Can’t recommend enough.
enjoyed your comparison. Ive found that in EDC theology, as in life, there are two kinds of people: Those that get the mini champ and those that do not. I have heard people wax on about the tools being strange yada yada... But a little creativity goes a long way, that cuticle cutter can be used as a bigger flathead, a prying bar, etc. To me the Mini is the best multi considering ratio of tools to have and size. It is my favorite Swiss Army Knife.
You can unlock the tools on the Powerpint by partially opening another tool on the same side. It presses down on the bar and releases any locked tools.
I personally carry a Skeletool and a Squirt PS4. The squirt is a non-negotiable everyday essential; the skeletool is a "most days but I'll skip it when I want to avoid carrying too much" tool for me and I'll carry a Victorinox Tinker in its place (smaller, lighter, still has a good toolset). But damn, I've had days where I very much regret leaving the skeletool at home. The screwdriver selection plus the size of the pliers seem to be exactly enough to get me out of just about any unexpected situation I encounter in my daily life. Initially I was bummed about the combo edge but I've come to enjoy having the serrations when I need them. On the other hand, some of the tools on the squirt have uses that are almost set in stone. Sometimes a tool helps me improvise a solution for something unexpected, but much of the tools' usage is for recurring tasks. Both are excellent multitools. I could probably carry just one of them (either one) and be fine. But I like both and want to carry both.
As far as the power pints closing, if you just slightly open another tool it will disengage the lock so you can put away whatever tool you were using. Then you have no need to open pliers tool to close the tool. Just a little jack I’ve found
With the SOG powerpint instead of opening it to pres the lock release just open one of the other tools enough so the lock releases and you can close all the tools.
You don't have to open the power pint to unlock a tool. You can unlock a tool one-handed by partially opening another tool which causes the lock mechanism to raise, then you can close them up, nice and neat.
Hey bud, on the PowerPint you don't have to open the pliers to close the other tools. Just start to open any of the other tools on that side of the plier and it will disengage the lock bar on that side.
I’ve been using the Leatherman curl for a few months now. It’s a great size to stick in the pocket without sacrificing feeling big enough to be useful.
Here's a trick for closing the locking tools on the SOG Powerpint. Instead of opening the tool to depress the lock bar, I defeat the lock by partially opening another tool on the same side of the handle. That will disengage the lock from the tool you were using, then just close them both at once.
I'm a man. I edc Spirit X and an Explorer on me, Knipex 150 and other tools in my Maxpedition Fatboy Versipack, which is my edc bag since forever! PS Both Spirit X and Maxpedition Fatboy, look like new, even though both, have been through hell!! Best part no2, these both take almost zero maintenance, to keep them at that level! I only clean the bag once a couple of years!
great Vid Taylor, my usual carry is a Victornox Credit card, just fits in my slim wallet (Chums) making for a very simple EDC. I do have a Gerber dime and yes the file is crap! but I do use the package opener all the time .... one question though, on the bottle opener the top has a rotating tube, do you know waht this is for?? or any suggestions for its use. Cheers Bob
Wenger Esquire is an overlooked model too. Slightly larger than the Vic Classic, same tool set (proper nail cleaner vs flat head screwdriver). Better scissors than the Classic. I EDC a stainless steel version.
Apparently this is an unpopular opinion but I would love a Skelatool with scissors instead of pliers. Was given a Style cs years ago and love having the scissors for so many things.
I got the victorinox executive for $12. A guy on fb ordered one and they sent him a box full(like 18). So he sold them to people cheap. I freaking LOVE it!! I’ve used that obscure tool in it a bunch of times. It’s a great size on a small carabiner on my edc bag.
You don't have to open the powerpint to unlock the tool. Just partially lift up on one of the other tools on that same side (20 degrees or so) and it will lift the lock up for you to close them both.
I had the same problem with the skeletool, fell out of my pocket the first day. I actually just use the carabiner end to clip to my pocket instead of the pocket clip.
I too have lost a skeletool to the bad pocket clip. I replaced it though and I have been using the carabiner to clip the tool on the edge of my pocket with the tool hanging inside. I have carried it this way for years no issue, not only is this more secure but is also a bit more stealth
for the Swizz knives you get a very very small flat head that screws into the wine opener... I got it on one a few one my Swizz, you can order them alone. They work on glasses / eye glasses, sunglasses ect, very useful to tighten small screws on things you didn't know needed tightening. and the Swizz got a special knife with a proper nail scissors "Victorinox NailClip". I got one of these for myself and all my siblings, its a good carry always lol
I think the Leatherman Style PS should be on the list. It's become my daily over the Squirt because the handles make the pliers a lot more usable. I can also take it on a plane because it's bladeless. Also, the Rambler is a good alternative to the Minichamp as it has the useful tools and a much cheaper price.
Unfortunately, you can't get a rambler in alox (SwissBianca used to carry one for $250, but I think they don't even have that anymore) which means your rambler is going to be bigger and get more beaten up on your keychain. I wish they made an Alox Vagabond which would be the Rambler with the package opener and very nice second wharncliffe blade while skipping the not-too-useful cuticle pusher and depth guage.
I carry a Wave 90% of the time (for about 17 years now) but I also like the SoG Powerpint when I don't want/need the Wave, I also have a Skeletool and a lot of Victorinox knives but all of them together I only carry them about 5% of the time. The Squirt or Dime are a good idea (and I have/had both) but you can't do much with it before it brakes and that's what happened to at least one of the functions of them. I hate that Leatherman discontinued the Juice before I could buy it and that they don't have any multitool that is the same size with as many functions (like the Powerpint).
That Compact has “Plus” scales, with the extra slot for the pen. Also the bottle opener is also a flat head screwdriver and a can opener, with the wire-stripper notch. Also, it’s an 84 mm model, the Pioneer is 93, and the standard plastic scaled slip-joint models like the Spartan, Huntsman, Champ and Tinker are 91 mm.
I have the sog powerlitre and I found out that there is an easier way to unlock the tools. If you open up another tool on the same side it will disengage the lock.
I have to agree with you on the Powerpint, bought it on 2021, it has what you are most likely to need. For me the powerpint is another example of a jack of all trades master of none. It’s amazing for EDC, not really meant to do some hard work. Quality could really be better in my opinion but it’s not bad. I personally use the scissors more than the pliers, so I mostly carry either the powerpint or a victorinox huntsman with a swissqlip. Cool video as always
BTW what I do when I have to put a tool away on the powerpint with a single hand, just lift another tool from the same side just a little and it disengages the locking mechanism and you are able to close the tool without pressing the locking mechanism.
🤙 radical
13 Years! That's gotta be a record!
Truckers rock
I’m going on 5 years, good to know lol
I believe it bro, I carried the same black kershaw leek for probably 5 years, don't carry it much now but it's my first tried and true edc knife
I have the Leatherman Micra. I have learnt that 90% of my EDC cutting tasks is best served done by scissors than a blade. Additionally, when folded up, there are no sharp edges to catch on fabric. A very underrated multitool.
I have a feeling the gerber splice is better
I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m sure the leather man is higher quality, and has tools that’d be cool when you need them. But I think overall the splice is better, if you’re goi g to go with just one. But if you’re carrying another thing that takes care of the other tools then yeah the micra
But also the splice is half the price
As a Machinist the tweezers on the macra are invaluable, all the metal slivers.
Squirt S4 is one step up from Micra. Better built.
I was going to comment the same thing! Good looking out.
pair the powerpint with the 711L EDC ratchet (purchased from Amazon with the bits) and its good enough for most light weight tasks. The 711L ratchet is compatible with standard 1/4" bits and even leatherman flat bits and extender.
This is an incredible tip! Thank you sooo much!
Dude says he Carrie’s it everyday but didn’t know that and none of his stuff looks used lol
For EDC, i have a keychain with:
* Mecarmy "X1S" (tiny rechargeable 10180 battery keychain flashlight in titanium, which has very nice output and runtimes for EDC stuff)
* pipe tool (for tobacco pipes)
* keychain pipe stand (in the form of a leather "loop")
* ExoTac NanoSpark (my favorite firestarter, with compartment for tinder inside)
* emergency whistle (for SHTF situations when im hiking)
* tiny Gerber folding knife/package opener
Most people will think this is WAY too much for a keychain, but i actually really like this size, as:
1 - it doesnt bother me at all
2 - it makes it a lot easier to find my keys when im in a hurry
3 - it gives me a custom selection of the things i may need when im out and about.
I think im gonna see if i can expand it with a compass and a flat head screwdriver (for adjusting the flame on my Zippo butane insert).
I must say I prefer the Super Tinker to the Compact... the screwdrivers do it for me and it's less expensive. Still a great buy.
The orange peeler/pipe cleaner appears in a close-up in the title sequence for the original _MacGuyver._ Mac is using it to lift a cap off something.
Leatherman signal in coyote tan + bit kits and bit extension
+
Leatherman Style CS everyday for the past 3 years.
I have three mini champs and I love every one! I've gone to carrying more pocket size tools than belt design because they're just as handy.
an interesting function I have found for the bottle opener is for blind keepers. I sometimes have to take a blinds down to get to a window for work multiple times a week. the edge keeper that is a metal box style can be a pain to unclasp. the bottle opener is the best thing ive found that doesnt bend or mar it.
My favorite is the Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit, weight is acceptable 210 grams, and works really good.
For me the Victorinox Explorer is my EDC urban carry, and if I'm going out of the city I'm taking the Victorinox Farmer X due to having a saw. Never felt like I needed one handed opening though.
A saw for the city?
@@waltswild out OF the city, not out TO the city🙂
@@pkennethv this makes total sense LOL thanks!
2nd the explorer. It is awesome!
As for a knife multi tool, I usually carry the True Utility Smartknife+
-Blade, with serrations
-built in flatblade screwdrivers
-mini pry bar
- 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" wrenches built in
-1/4" bit holder (for storage), plus bit driver slot in the tip for use
-mini file
-metric and SAE rulers (almost useless due to short length)
It's about $10.00 USD and has more tools and uses than the Gerber Curve, but due to size takes a role of primary pocket knife.
The pin on the Victorinox Compact is a sewing pin, also used for resetting your phone/electronic devices. 👍
Too bad Leatherman decided to discontinue Squirt...
I use as my EDC a Gerber Dime, and while too small for some needs… is a remarkable tool for its size! It’s like the Mighty Mouse of multitools.
Carrying either Skeletool or Gerber Suspension. Very handy here at high mountain desert plateau hideout NM. Suspension is heavy but....handy.
Victorinox Manager/Rambler is godly. It's got the most used tools from the mini-champ in a bit smaller package for half the price.
Love my Minichamp but i'll have to give it a look
Totally agree. Minichamp - useless/redundant tools = Rambler/Manager
Agree. Rambler is the less -fluff version of the mini-champ.
Agreed. I've had the same rambler on my keychain with a small s clip for about 20 years. Love the phillips, bottle opener tool.
I always wished they would do a pS4 with a scissor spring that doesn't snap and metal scales like the micra. So many complaints of that hardened spring bar snapping when not in use.
I lost mine but I carried the Gerber Dime for over a year and used it a ton. The scissors were solid
Actually... I've got 2!
I'd personally go with the power pint + some Victorinox depending on the occasion + a main blade/something for self defense.
Definitely advise everyone to try the leatherman Curl out! Been my favorite tool. It’s so light and has a great pocket clip
Which Fenix flashlight you talking about?
Dang, buddy! You need an old fashioned can opener with the triangular edge!
Vic Compact is standard size tool, 91mm. And you can use that pin when working on a metal. Measure, scratch a line and cut. Easy.
I carry a leatherman bond with pocket clip everyday. I have beat it up working on a farm for the last year. It has held up great.
I use the power pint, you don't have to open it to close the tools just pull another tool next to it about a quarter of the way then food it in.
Use magnet
SOG PowerPint is also my favorite multitool. When it comes to the lock, I usually take out another tool and the lock lets go. This is faster than opening the pliers, pressing the lock, etc.
I can't believe I haven't tried that. Thank you!
I came here to say that very thing. No need to open the Powerpint to close the individual tools.
Got a sidekick super cheap and I cant help but to love it, got anything and everything i could need.
There are tons of SAKs at that size. Tinker is probably what you are looking for.
On the compact Angle the bottle opner about 45 degrees does Philips in a pinch and flat 👍wicked tool
Just a little jack I’ve found
I like the PowerPint, but the scissors are hard to use. They're hard to use because they're left handed.
I've had my Micra since 1999, it is simply all that I need usually.
That will disengage the lock from the tool you were using, then just close them both at once.
great comparison but black tools on black background we not visible
You need to try out the Victorinox SwissTool Spirit X. The ergonomics are simply unbeatable.
The awl on the Gerber Armbar Drive makes total sense... it can be used to mark out spots on the wood where you want to put screws in.
Gerber Dime. I find myself using the exterior bottle opener often and it’s nice having the others for emergencies.
ayyy, was just hoping you would upload soon. I bought the Powerpint and it's been very reliable for its compact size
great Vid Taylor, my usual carry is a Victornox Credit card, just fits in my slim wallet (Chums) making for a very simple EDC. I do have a Gerber dime and yes the file is crap! but I do use the package opener all the time .... one question though, on the bottle opener the top has a rotating tube, do you know waht this is for?? or any suggestions for its use. Cheers
Bob
Wenger Esquire is an overlooked model too. Slightly larger than the Vic Classic, same tool set (proper nail cleaner vs flat head screwdriver). Better scissors than the Classic.
I EDC a stainless steel version.
Not going to lie those skulls are pretty sick if I didnt just buy a winter co factor I would be getting a nice wall mount
Apparently this is an unpopular opinion but I would love a Skelatool with scissors instead of pliers. Was given a Style cs years ago and love having the scissors for so many things.
I agree. Would be awesome.
Thanks for this review. I now have a SOG powerpint and i love it! Moded the bottle opener for it to be a bottle opener and flat head driver/prybar
for the Swizz knives you get a very very small flat head that screws into the wine opener...
