I would argue that hack and slash games are not mindless, comfort food fun. Hack and slash games, even the simplest ones have surprisingly complex and well-thought out combat systems. Not to mention all the auxilary systems going into said combat system at its core mechanics.
You have things like enemy / location variety. Some of them have puzzles (Ala Darksiders 2 and Castlevania Lords of Shadow) Some of them encourage combo variety and style meters to reward expoerience points to unlock new moves through skill progression. (Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, God of War, etc.)
You know these games are pretty technical compared to alot of today's on-rails cinematic games which are more equivalent to this 'comfort food' you describe. God of War 4 and Ragnarok follow that design principle. Dumb, safe, spoiled, boring fun that's only good when you are in the mood for it.
You're actually right. But then again, I haven't played that many modern games so I thought these games I mentioned were simple enough because my friends have told me that a lot of these games I play are too simple for their taste (my friends don't like hack and slash games)
@@leeminchung9 Your friends honestly have no say in the matter. Unelss they've actually played Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, or any of these hack and slash games thoroughly then their opinions are void. You cannot judge something's quality if you have no idea what it's really about.
Perhaps you should encourage your friends to give you a different reason other than: 'Games are too simple and handholdy lol' or sit them in front of Devil May Cry 3, 4, or 5 and have them tell you the games aren't mechanically complex.
True some hack and slash action games are simpler than others, but that still doesn't make their combat systems at all boring or terrible. If you prefer mechanical complexity over spectacle then God of War may not be for you. Try out Bayonetta or DMC. I keep falling back on the holy trinity but it's very true. Hack and Slash games are not simple. hack and Slash games are not boring.
i honestly agree, all of the points touve mentioned are true as most of this hack n slash games have designed combat in an intricate way
from what i heard back in the day that some people dont like hack n slash is how "easy/spammy/button mashy" it is, which is true but in the context of how these gamers play their game, i think why they said it is due to the fact the only goal in their mind when looking at games is to finish it quick, finding the meta, and just skim pass through as they can cheese (this is more apparent now in modern gaming, and with darksouls in mind, i always see this kind of philosophy in every players)
these hack n slash games isnt about just finishing it but rather the creative potential to be stylish action player, by expressing how those protagonist should do the job done
The best part of hack and slash games is that everyone can play and enjoy at their own pace, depending on the difficulty you can challenge yourself to master the combat system or just turn your brain off and start button mashing. So it becomes a comfort food if you want it to, but it can also be a very challenging and rewarding experience if you really want to get better. Not every game in this genre is as balanced, but for the most part the higher difficulties force you to use different tactics instead of spamming attacks, i.e. Chains of Olympus parry system is absurly satisfying on God mode but in Dante's Inferno's higher difficulties you're forced to spam the cross attack from start to finish
1:30 to 1:39 is the most relateable thing, when I feel tired I dont like playing games that require me to use my brain, I only play rythm games since rythm games are just instinct and reaction time.
I’m with you 100% it’s a shame there aren’t as many hack and slash games made nowadays as there were back in the Xbox 360/PS3 era 😢
Which hack-and-slash game do you think would be the most approachable as someone who's looking to give the genre a try?
Great video
BECAUSE THEYRE AWESOME THATS WHY!!!!!!
Oh please, never compare hack and slash with fast food because in their simplicity its an art and many cant see that
great video!
Completely agree
The Doom music does fit coz Hack & Slash games are visually flashy so it makes sense, in fact imagin Doom being a hack & slash game, that genre would fit Doom perfectly, btw what is the doom music called?
I love H&S games, they are flashy, have finisher prompts, have QTEs, action set pieces and most importantly you can pull off sick combos, they don`t all do this but there are the features I like. As for button mashing comment, it`s only a button masher IF you play that way, if you pulling off different combos your not button mashing at that point.
Since you like H&S games, here are some H&S games from 2020 and beyond:
Soulstice
Valkyrie Elysium
Wanted: Dead
Etenights
Stella Blade
Project DT
Project M
Lost Soul Aside
Phantom Hellcat
Arise of Awakener
Granblue Fantasy Relink
Yasuke A Lost Descendent
Shred & Tear: Explosive Kajun
H&S games have been in the decline for some years but now more are being made.
Shouts out to hack & slash games, they are making a comeback!
I finished Soulstice a few months ago and my god it was amazing
I might make a video about Soulstice someday because it has a lot of similarities with the manga series Claymore, one of my favourite manga series
And yes you're right, H&S games are only button mashers if you play it that way. But when you get serious and try to pull off the combos and think of better ways to play it, it's so satisfying and awesome!
Also just to make clear, when I said Doom could be a hack & slash game I mean it could play like Wanted: Dead where it`s a mix of H&S and 3rd person shooting, If doom ever went that path I would so get the game, If I liked FPS Doom would be a game I would get hands down.
@@leeminchung9 When I first saw Soulstice I straight up said Claymore and Berserk and I was sold immediately, even the developer confirmed that he took inspiration from the both of them.
IDK if you have heard but they said they want to be the Italian version of Platinum game which means MORE HACK & SLASH GAMES FOR US. I have the game but I can`t play it due to not having a PS5 yet.
Just to ask (since I like to ask this question) if you had the ability to create your own videogame what would you make?
As for the list Steller Blade is on it, the reason why I'm mention it is coz ppl are upset about the game, all I'll say is if ppl are upset about Steller Blade, ppl are defiantly are going to cry over one of these games on that list...
As for the the games I'm looking forward to on this list , if I had to choose three t would be Project DT, Phantom Hellcat and Yasuke A Lost Descendent.
@vexicution5533 if I had the ability to create a video game, I want Hellsing Ultimate to finally have its own video game adaptation
I've talked about this with some friends before and most of us agree that Hellsing would work well as a hack and slash game with shooting, similar to Devil May Cry
And to top it all off, throughout Hellsing, we see Alucard and Seras fight many different enemies all with different set of abilities. So yeah, a Hellsing video game adaptation would be good
@@leeminchung9 Yh I can see that they are both very similar.
To answer my own question, I have many ideas that I will keep close to my chest but one idea I can share is of a mix of a 3rd person shooter and hack & slash where you play as an female elf with a bow, a bow that can also turn into dual blades.
You will have the ability to customise her from face to body a very deep customisation, my inspiration is from an old game called Hunded: demon forge, and wanted: dead and she will definitely be eye-candy.
Hey man, we care! At least I do :)
Try Gothic 3 with alternative ai turned off.
I agree
U have to try soulstice
💓🔥💓🔥
Dude! Doom IS A HACK & SLASH GAME JUST LOOK AT GAMPLAY SAME RULES, SAME PLAY STYLE
Exactly, it can be considered a sort of "First Person Shoot and Slash" a lot of action games can be considered hack and slash/character action games without having a heavy focus on melee attacks. Simply put, DMC1 was 50% slashing and 50% shooting, first Onimusha also had some ranged weapons, and other stylish action games such as Vanquish, God Hand, Wonderful 101 and even some Resident Evil games have pretty stylish combat systems without having a heavy focus on slashing attacks. That's why some people are getting rid of the H&S tag and started calling them "Character action games" instead
thats precisly what i dont like about hack and slash i feel no progression in skill, its just see an enemy click the hit button many times, my effort is mindless and the character is doing summersaults and all this crazy attacks, just meh not for me
