Finally, a video that shares my unpopular ideas. I've been telling all my friends the past year that boredom is good for you and is the only way for ourselves and our society to progress. And I've found that so many people refuse to accept that fact, because it so so easy to constantly stimulate ourselves. I wrote a NyTimes article about harnessing boredom during quarantine a few years back and wrote about the exact same study you mentioned here. Amazing video, I wish everyone would see this and implement boredom in their lives. If we cannot discover and access our true inner capabilities, we are nothing.

It's absolutely true, though. I've came to the same conclusion while working as a security guard. As long as I had the laptop with me, I would watch movies, play videogames, surf the forums and so on. If I forgot my laptop, I would devour books instead. Like a 500 pages book in a single shift. If I forgot to take both, I would sort all the papers (weren't even my responsiblity) and clean the whole premises. However, when it comes to such basic tasks and simple manual labor, I prefer using audiobooks at the same time. I'm probably not achieving the optimal working or reading (or listening in this case) comprehension, but I prefer it whenever it is actually possible.

yep. boredom really works. usually i have a huge distraction problem, there are days when i am plugged in listening music or watching videos for the entirety of the day, even during the working hours. But on some days when i choose to spend at least 1-2 hours without listening to music in the background or watching videos then the work becomes super easy to do, to the point where turning on the music feels wrong and only distracts me from my work or studies, so i can turn it off no problem. Its like there is a 2 hour buffer zone of boredom that separates my mind from the 'distracted' state and 'focused' state

I find that not all music is equally bad for productivity. Music with lyrics generally is. But ambient easy-to-listen is more like a humm in the background that appears to have some harmony in it. I found myself very engaged with coding when i turned on witcher 3 ost. But the task itslef was also very engaging and i felt myself VERY fulfilled when i finished it.

some points that I found important to note down
overstimulation makes life feel "good enough"
we are living a life directed by impulsivity rather than intentionality
    principles of deep work:
    1. allocate certain hours of the day for only deep work
    2. write down what you want to get down beforehand
    3. take low-stimulation breaks
    4. listen to binaural beats at 40hz

  • @alberloss

In my opinion, the idea of "outworking everyone" and being successful is amplified by social media. 95% of the content in social media preaches that you must get productive, or you'll be mediocre. Perhaps we'll have to use the boredom first to eradicate the subconscious guilt we feel when not working and THEN work on what we want.

    • @sefrautiq
      @sefrautiq 10 місяців тому +13

Yeah, don't really want to outwork everyone, maybe I'd like to compete a bit at most. But overall, all I want is just to have enough financial stability that eradicates my anxiety about paying rent, buying food, affording healthcare and entertainment. If that clause is satisfied then I could happily pursuit the things that I have passion to and socialize. For me it would be perfect.

I don't even touch my phone as a vehicle technician. I just pump out oil changes, tire rotations and services and most of the time I do it as autopilot not even thinking about any distractions. Not sure about outwork but it helps you efficiently complete tasks. Although I'm productive, that boring state can sometimes affect you mentally such as make you feel like you have nothing going on for you; you aren't able to use your creative juices to help you think and get excited about doing anything. There are definitely its pros and cons but I think everything just needs balance and you will no doubt have peace of mind and succeed in whatever you're doing.

It never makes me more infuriated than to be asked or complained about something unimportant while I'm in a flow. My mother is always in a bad mood because of menopause, and never respects my boundary, and constantly asks me about what to cook for dinner or to do the dishes. I know I'm such a dependent asshole for even thinking that this bothers me, but I can't stand but to be angry because it is so hard for me to get into the state of flow, and my day is basically ruined from the point I interacted with her. I have a curated list of music that I listen to in order to get into the flow, but when she angrily bursts into my room, the music that I'm hearing basically becomes useless from that day on because it brings back an angry mood. I know I have to be more independent and rent my own room where I'm distraction free, but I don't feel like I can with her preventing me from doing what I excel.
I tried explaining this to her multiple times, but she never seems to understand the concept of flow as she claims that she never experienced anything like this in her life, and makes fun of me that I look like I'm having a man period.

I would really love to explore the path to mental peace while living in a chaotic environment because that only is the true and real meaning of being in a state of flow. It is childish to demand "perfect peace" in the surroundings in order to meditate, focus or be in a state of flow because mastery in the environment is the real way to finding the flow.

Lately I've been finding myself forgetting things or not being as creative as I was when I didn't have that much stimulation. Every time I go for a long walk or a mediation session, my mind suddenly flows with wonderful ideas and creative views on recent events/issues.
This video confirms that this is indeed what might be the trigger for a healthier and unshackled brain, I will try putting myself in these conditions for some time and will occasionally drop by the comments to keep you updated; see you then.

I don't necessarily agree with productivity being the highest goal but it's always good to think about ways to get stuff done more efficiently. Makes it easier to be lazy too.

This is 100% true, I went on a phone fast for a month and my productivity went over 9000, all the laziness and lethargy went away. I would get extremely bored when I didn't work so I would work often and with intensity and than get bored af, rinse repeat.

What I learned made a video about this, his video was about why less restraint is how you overcome bad habits/procrastination. Instead of using all your restraint to avoid doing something, just put that thing in a place very difficult to reach.

Whenever I'd start to work on homework or something I didn't want to do, I'd feel a strong sense of pain inside me.
When I had been working on something I didn't want to work on for a long time I started to feel lonely and sad.
It didn't get easier, but I got better at it, and now I feel a sense of accomplishment whenever I can get through a period and look back on all the things I did that I never thought I could pull off becasue of my avoidance of those negative feelings.

Thank you for this video. I can relate to a few of your points. Boredom was the main thing that caused me to ruin my life. Doing drugs, wasting time playing games, fapping... all of those behavior's can be tied down to one thing: boredom. My justification was, "But I'm so bored!". I thought boredom didn't lead to anything useful. But apparently, after watching your video, I have learnt that being bored is a prerequisite of being productive.
Attention residue is a real thing. That is why I don't like reading on my phone. I never knew how to explain it but I just liked reading physical books because it allows me to stay focused. By using my phone, there is potential for distraction.

He explained that watching the wall was so boring that just doing intense training became enjoyable.

So basically life consists of hours in a no stimulant/distractions environment so that the only thing left to do is focus on work, punctuated by rest periods where again you dont come into contact with anything too stimulating but instead meditate, go for a walk on your own, or listen to meaningless sounds meant to soothe your brain to get it ready to work again. Wonderful.

I actually already applied it by not clicking off the video to find a new one for after or checking the comments just because sense you were talking about it I recognized that would classify as succumbing to boredom. It really works!

I feel like my time as a moped delivery rider have ruined this for me. I can entertain myself for extensive periods of time (upwards of three hours) by half-dreaming; effectively story writing using my subconscious while my body enters an automatic state which responds to outside stimulation without disrupting active thoughts.

I once had a job with a lot of downtime to do nothing. This was before smart phones and social media so those distractions weren't a thing yet. I read enormous amounts of books and had college coursework done well in advance. The books weren't boring but I was able to accomplish a lot by not having anything else to do and not being distracted.
