  • In 1930s London, a network of secret underground clubs broke the law to allow gay men to be their true selves, at a time when homosexuality was illegal.
One such club was The Caravan, described as 'London's greatest bohemian rendezvous'. When it was eventually raided by the police in 1934, an incredible love letter was discovered that gives us a unique insight into queer culture at the time.
A BBC Reel video in collaboration with The National Archives.

I remember living in a country where it was so taboo that I had to run off from one group, drop everything and never return to that study group as someone suspected I was gay. I was bullied in school and I had to constantly deny it , try to butch myself up hide and deny. Be mocked at. There are still places out there , if you are ever suspected of being gay and can’t come out deny deny deny and remember don’t give any reaction people move on to the next victim. And just remember you will find a place and friends that will allow you and accept you for who you are one day.

As an older queer far away from England, thank you BBC for publishing this short but fantastic piece. I have retitled it in my mind, “Dear Morris, Love Cyril.”
I hope they made it somehow, but no one did then really.

Very little about open queer expression of love has changed today. At least in my part of the world. It is still a taboo. Life seems like en endless struggle for us.

@@4runnercolorado422You clearly have nothing better to do in your life. Why bother being in the comment section if you want nothing to do with queer culture? If you’re religious in any way a sovereign God would detest obscenities and such foul language.

And yet, they keep saying that Germany was the only country that disliked homosexuals...

...who are "they"? cause in the 1930's being gay was illegal pretty much all over the world. From the modern developing western world, to the ancient colonised eastern world due to the laws brought in from colonnialization throughout the already established historic eastern cultures? Although fun fact, Germany was the only country in europe that had actually intended to physically exterminate them. yet you can't seem to grasp the seveerity of punishments that came out from germany at that time

Our society hasn't understood for years that mental health is a pressing problem...
It's okay to be gay...People should focus on mental health and should not promote hatred towards gays

I don’t know what to make of this comment. Can we as humans have logical reasoning or is that just reserved to higher faculties.
