What are blood proteins, and why should you care about them? Find out in this quick video!

3:51 What do high blood proteins mean?
4:22 High protein in your urine

In this video, we’re going to talk about blood proteins. I’m going to make this very simple so you can get a full understanding of what blood proteins are and why they matter.
There are two primary types of protein in the blood: albumin and antibodies. These represent most of the protein in your blood.
The liver creates albumin. The purpose of this protein is to hold the fluid in your blood. If you have liver damage, you won’t be able to hold fluid in your blood. Instead, the fluid goes out through your urine and into your tissues-also known as edema. Fluid can also build up in the sack in your abdominal area-this is called ascites.
Albumin also helps transport hormones, electrolytes, vitamins, certain drugs, and fatty acids.
The other type of protein is antibodies. Antibodies are produced by immune cells that help you with your immunity. They are Y-shaped proteins that are like receptors. They connect with something called an antigen-this is a piece of a pathogen, like a bacterium, virus, or other foreign substance that doesn’t need to be in the body.
When antibodies connect with antigens, they neutralize a pathogen, tag or identify pathogens, regulate inflammation, and kill off unhealthy cells.
High blood proteins could be a sign of an infection, dehydration, or cancer. High protein in your urine could signal kidney damage, excess protein consumption, too much exercise, drinking too much water, or you’re using creatine.

After watching several hundred of your videos, this is the only one where I felt there was significant ambiguity or confusion. Particularly, the differences between low protein and high protein in terms of diagnosis/determination, cause and treatment wasn't clear enough and detailed enough. This critique aside, I very much appreciate all of the education that you provide, which literally has changed my life substantially for the better! :-)

Thank you Dr. Berg for explaining this. My moms lab work came back with high protein in the blood and she was worried. She mentioned to me that she had drank 4 bottles of water prior to her lab test to make sure she was hydrated enough for the blood draw. This explains why she came back with a high protein . The docs will retest her and I told her to not chug a lot of water and to go back to her normal water intake. Thanks for this video. I love your channel.

Thanks a lot. During intermediate fasting my protein level was 16.8%. I started strength gain exercise at gym and was taking between 200-250gm proteins. After one week when I seen protein level at 16.1% made me concerned. Yup I was drinking 12 glass of water because I was afraid of toxins of protein shake which I take once a day. 100gm from 2 chicken breasts is blessing to cover 1gm/lbs of weight to gain muscles.
Once again thanks for taking time to enlighten us.❤

Thank you Dr. Berg for a great video and explanation 👍. This is 💯 exactly what happened to my son who had Severe Pulmonary Hypertension. Without the double Transplant that was needed it affected his heart ; therefore, he got right heart failure where his heart had enlarged and fluids starting backing up to the lower extremities (edema) and eventually through the tissues in the abdomen (acsites). Even though a tube was inserted in his abdomen to drain the excess fluids it was not enough. He eventually died of kidney failure at age 29.
Thank you 😊 Dr Berg for really showing and explaining that 👍 process as the cardiologists never gave me so much details. My son was born with a lung defect that lead to all the above.. and science is still not there yet. Everyone count your blessings and stay healthy.

The symptoms I get with low Albumin in my blood is swelling and I have stretch marks from retaining so much water very rapidly 40lbs in 2 weeks was my worst experience and I’ll have brain fog which becomes frustrating.

Hello Dr. Berg do you have any videos about nephropathy or improving circulation. I sometimes get numbness or irritated feeling on the outside of my front right thigh to the knee. I even notice the skin seems a bit rougher at times. Maybe it's something to do with my posture bc I do find myself leaning on that side for most things. Granted I could do my physical activity but it's always the same side. Even when I did work out a lot id notice on leg presses my right knee could seems to suffer on occasion and force me to stop. Anyway great stuff as always Dr. I must've lost 25 pounds at least over the last 2 months doing Keto and OMAD.

Good Evening dr/ Berg from Egypt🇪🇬 I wanna ask you a question
A year and a half ago I had food poisoning therefore I took antibiotic for 3 months ,and it appeared that the antibiotic I had been taking caused for me an allergy that makes my skin swells .So after that I changed the medicine and I was cured .But since then I had been suffering from strange symptoms that continued for a year up till now , if I scratched my skin ,some thick swelling lines would appear with high tempreature and go away after 1 minute . I feel that my blood is so hot as well as feeling dizzy ,sleepy and nauseous all day long. After that I went to an immunity doctor to for a checkup .The doctor gave me an anti allergy medicine but the symptoms still won't go away .so I stopped taking the medicine.
Doctor Berg , please inform me about what should I do .

Hello Dr berg, please I need your help, lately the doctor find that I have protein in the blood, and law while blood cells. She said there is nothing to do about, or to correct it, I just need to watch it. Because it may cost damage in the future the leukaemia, she said it’s may happened may not. I asked if there is anything I needed to do to prevent this from happening she said NO. 😢that not sound right for me. Why I need to wait for something to happen? Please 🙏 answer me because she makes me feel bad 😔 she said no diet, no vitamins, and no treatment can help. She said don’t waste your money.
