Many of you already know we are always looking for new locations to bring you the yachting lifestyle from South Florida, Our weeks always start on Haulover Beach Inlet as I live close to it. The Miami River and Key Biscayne are other locations we visit regularly. I wonder if some of these boats are Test boats for Mercury outboard? I worked at the Ralph Evinrude center in Stuart Florida about a year, until they sold the company! Bummer!!! I was a fiberglass fabrication technician, coming up with new ideas, assisting on existing ones too! I LOVED THAT JOB! On the weekends, they would let us sign out boats for a day, 24’ Hydrasports with either twin 175 , 150, or 200 HP ENGINES. If you were quick enough to get to the weekend list, you could get the CrisCraft 21 footer, beautiful boat for cruising for the day! However, the best part was that they paid for ALL THE FUEL that you used! We just had to fill up the tanks, check oil reservoir containers, and give her a good scrubbing! Some days I’d go through about 50-60 gallons on a Saturday, and this was in 2000! Tellin ya man it was a dream job! Plus, when my own little 25 hp Evinrude OB broke down, It would get fixed for FREE! Now how cool is that? Plus, the pay was great, overtime whenever you wanted it, and 12 hour shifts we got free rib dinners from PJ Clark’s!

Am I required to have Radar? IF YOU HAVE IT YES! Radar is not required on vessels under 1600 GT (33 CFR 164.35), however, Rule 7 states that proper use shall be made of radar equipment if fitted and operational. In other words, whoever has one must use it. The Navigation Rules are not meant to discourage the use of any device, rather they expect prudent mariners to avail themselves of all available means appropriate...
Should you be in a collision how would a judge/jury rule on your contention that the use of radar was impracticable (due to electrical drain, crew shortages, etc.)? Also, if a collision does occur, then there was obviously a risk of collision beforehand. Could the determination of that risk have been made sooner with the use of radar? It is difficult to answer such questions because the circumstances of each case are different.
More importantly, remember that Rule 7 specifies that assumptions shall not be made on the basis of scanty information, especially scanty radar information.
