My folks still live near Sleeps Hill tunnel... Sundays in early 90s, you hear Sir Malcom or the Duke heading to Victor. Was magic to do this run from Keswick. A long but rewarding day.
Such a travesty that the track wasn't dual gauge to Mt Barker Junction, which would allow Steam Ranger to run occasionally between Adelaide - Mt Barker - Victor Harbor. It would be the greatest heritage train trips in the country. I still have fond memories of doing that trip. Even if it was a 2 day trip with overnight accommodation in Victor.
When 520 returns it will be running on our line from Mount Barker to Victor Harbour. 520 "Sir Malcolm Barclay-Harvey" is located up at our Mount Barker Depot currently under restoration: www.fireup520.org/ The locomotive at the National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide is a Sister engine to 520, No. 523 "Essington Lewis".

@@LukeWatson99 if your talking about 523 it is a NRM south Australia & not sure if 523 was operational in 2004. Doesn't look like it 523 is in horrible condition as of 2023 (operating wise)
@@LukeWatson99 @maxhighet4447 523 last ran on the 14th of October 1968 when it failed at Balhannah on an ARHS Tour "Victor Vulcan". 526 "Duchess of Gloucester" came to the rescue and continued hauling the train. 523 never ran again after that trip and entered the Mile End Railway Museum on the 28th of November 1968. In theory 523 would need to same job as 520 a full restoration.
621 has just been put back on its wheels and should return in the future. Brill 60 isn't far away from returning either. Currently under minor restoration.
Nope. Both 520 and 621 reached max speed of 78mph with 500 tons load. so, they might have gone a bit quicker with less load. However, there's others much quicker and those are the heavy Pacific 600 class from SAR system, and possibly S class from Victoria. They can and did go a lot faster BUT due to track restrictions, never officially documented.
@@dj17q ummm 621 struggles to get to 70mph and 520 easily does and even passes 621 by 10 or so mph and the recorded fastest steam loco in Australia is 3801, and if 621 can hold it's "ground" against 3801 520 will fly right to the top as fastest steam loco in Australia. Therefor your wrong

Of course with condition, loadings one can get up quickly than the others. Both with identical boiler pressure and driver wheels so that leaves their power output and weight the deciding factor. Of course they can go a bit quicker with less loadings than they did on their official run 80-90 years ago....at least 85 or 90mph but they are just rumours. Nothing else. As for the fastest steam locomotive it seems you know nothing else except playing with your toy trains. U reckon 3801 is the fastest, oh yeah the streamline does it for you whoo hoo. Sure it is quick BUT not the quickest. Try SAR 600 class heavy Pacific but I guess you’re just a kid not to know that yet. Now 621 most likely has beat this record many times, due to it's more "advanced" tech, due to the present day restorations being done with modern equipment. (I'm talking it's second restoration with Steamranger onwards) So yea, 621 has beat that record before, BUT 621 can't beat it on a regular basis. It's cylinders would not keep up "the tiny pistons in the cylinders" will not be able to take it, 621s cylinders 18.5ins diam x 28ins. Now 520 is another case, the S.A.R 100% recorded time is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 78mph. So faster than 621. And NO I DON'T THINK 3801 IS FASTEST IT'S BLOODY SLOWER THAN 621. AND WTH IS THIS TALK ABOUT THE 600s. 600s GOT NOTHING ON 520 OR 621. 520 WAS MADE TO BE THE IMPROVEMENT AND IT WAS THE IMPROVEMENT. DONE
