  • With the current very popular rumours of Jodie Whittaker's immanent departure, I thought I'd take the opportunity to make the case for Jo Martin as her replacement in this video essay.

The doctor is vain, the doctor is weird, the doctor is childlike, and the doctor is skinny. Jo Martin isn't distinctive or strange looking, she looks like a completely ordinary woman you could meet day-to-day, she isn't thin enough to play the character, and she can't be childlike and authoritative at the same time. While not necessarily "hot", the doctor's incarnations are always distinctive looking enough to stick out like a sore thumb standing in line at a bank, and Jo Martin doesn't at all, I wouldn't blink twice if I saw her in line behind me. Jodie Whittaker does. She looks as surreal in her face and expressions as Capaldi or Smith or Tom Baker. A Ruth Negga or Adelayo Adedayo or Thandie Newton would likely work in this respect just as well as Whittaker.
I suspect the casting director had the idea that being a black person compensates for not being strange-looking or childlike. No. No. No. An ordinary-looking un-childlike overweight doctor doesn't convince, in either male or female form.

@@annaclarafenyo8185 Her not being too childlike is a plus in my book. They keep trying to top themselves in that regard, to the point "Doctory" dialogue has been consumed with one liners and line references to previous stories, when I think a Doctor like 7 is much more called for, esp if we are saddled with Chibnall for a while. That kind of Doctor would play far more to the current era's strengths whereas Jodie seems to almost clash tonally in every scene. A Doctor that can be silly sometimes, but for the most part is serious and scheming... And what we saw of Jo Martin absolutely fits that bill.

When she greets 13 at the buried Tardis, she just had her identity restored, but NOT her full memories. In order to truly hide from the timelords and the Judoon she hid her memories and her identity separately (and it STILL wasn't enough to hide her from the Judoon which shows how awesome they are as trackers.) The real problem is the ridiculous "Chosen One" nonsense in the final episode. I actually admire Jo Martin for forcing me to believe she actually was also the Doctor, even though she is so miscast. I began to believe at the end. That's it.
The whole 'Doctors before the first doctor' and 'Timeless Child' nonsense is absurd, it is extraordinarily destructive, and it turns Dr. Who into Harry Potter. Dr. Who is a self-made story born of socialist Britain. It isn't the "I come from a long line of NOBILITY!" white-Russian fantasy that Harry Potter represents. Pre video comments: 100% agree, here's my own reasoning.
from a storytelling standpoint: i just felt in 1 episode she had more of that doctor charisma than 13 did the majority of her series, and it feels like theres a story to tell with her opposed to 13 at this point who feels like theres only a story to tell about her. Also her tardis is a police box, i just don't see a non-contrived reason for it to be so pre-hartnell.
from a personal/representation standpoint: When I saw Jo Martin announce herself as the doctor I was pretty exited from a representation standpoint. Capaldi will always be my favorite Doctor, but its nice especially in sci-fi to see a lead that looks like me ya know? However, I felt her utilization was really poor. Having her be more of a mayfly doctor, compared to all others having their own eras doesn't score points for me. At least with the War Doctor, he had a whole movie about him, not to mention the Big Finish line. like imagine if 13 was male and Ruth was played by Jodie, sure we have a female doctor, but it's only a cameo type appearance with little weight. Not exactly giving out awards for that.
Then theres her next appearance in the timeless children where she checks all the boxes for the "Magic Negro" stereotype, not to mention she's a fugitive and that connotation of course the one black doctor is falsely or not on the wrong side of the law, just feels to me like they didn't think it through as much as they should have.
That being said if if Jo Martin plays 14 a lot of those issues for me either are removed or at least reduced.
Post video: completely agree about the toxic positivity and the barrage of child bipoc doctors being tortured and murdered. It's especially not great when we're basically told through Ruth and later Ryan (lets not forget what they have in common) that none of that matters cause she still the doctor accept it. Also, Not sure how to feel about that idea that assuming they changed her DNA to make her a time lady/lord after teteun & later the time lords finished with her, she then became a while male for 13 straight incarnations, something just doesn't sit right there

By your definition of the Doctor, until 13, barely any of them qualify under your requirements. Especially when only 3 main doctors have been what most people would argue short. (1,2,7) heck, even 13 isn’t short for the average woman’s height, she’s above it.

I feel that most of the modern Doctors have felt like the Doctor from the first episode. By the end of Rose you could totally buy Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. There were so many great moments in the episode and it was a great re-introduction to the character. Tennant spent most of his first episode in a coma, however he was still able to feel like the Doctor, and the entire scene where he explained that he didn't know who he was yet was great in and out of character (as it was clearly also being used to explain regeneration to new fans). Smith was also brilliant from the start.
The only Doctor's who didn't feel right from the start (IMO) were Capaldi and Whittaker, the only difference is that with Capaldi that was deliberate on behalf of the writers (which is why we had the scene with Smith). However, it wasn't long before you could start to see Capaldi was the Doctor (just that he was very different from the previous ones).
We have had two seasons of Whittaker and she still doesn't feel like the Doctor - she comes across as someone playing the Doctor in a fan film where the writers and directors don't really understand the character. This is made even more apparent when we have Jo Martin come along and own the character from the very start.

That one clip of Ten opening the door, when watched with hindsight, completely defines his character.
He opens it slowly and calmly, then smirks. He's calm and patient, but emotional and impulsive. He's also grandiose and sees himself as the centre of everything (that one's more camerawork, though.)
Eleven is also defined by his first couple scenes. Him parading about the TARDIS with his new regeneration encapsulates his raw energy, the dangling from his crashing blue box, barely missing Big Ben (I know that's the name of the bell but I can't remember the name of the tower) shows his action and theatrics.
Twelve, while not my favourite Doctor, also has this. He's sudden, but he takes his time before every move, as shown by the sudden change and him slowly approaching and inspecting Clara.

If -- what the Great Curator said -- it happens THIS soon, and the 13th goes back to the face of "Doctor Ruth," that would be a nice touch.
The Doctor is immortal, and has access to time and space, which makes him/her a god. The powers that be in Gallifrey -- despite being grateful that they got their powers from the Doctor -- were afraid. So they "humbled" the Doctor, making him/her believe that after the 13th life, the Doctor will die, so they alter his/her mind, then kill the Doctor, starting the cycle again, but erasing memories of the last 13 adventures. But, due to the Time War, they couldn't alter the Doctor's mind after the "13th" life, so they had to improvise (the crack). That's my idea, in a nutshell. I doubt that Chibnall had the same idea.

Great video as always. I feel the main thing holding Martin back as Doctor 14 is that we have in essence already seen her debut story, so any "first" story may feel a bit redundant: a 'Clara problem'.
Add that to the ratings doing a good impression of that song about jumping a thousand feet without a parachute and you'd have the issue also of introducing her to a casual or new audience: "She's the new Doctor! Well, ish. Let me tell you about this story no-one watched."
And yet... you're right, she nailed the role absolutely. No questions asked. And it *would* be a huge milestone whereas right now it's a plot point that raises more questions than anything else.
I'm torn. I want it in some ways, but I cannot see it happening because of how it's started.

Thank you for watching, Nick! I doubt they'll actually give her the role, for all the reasons you mentioned and because of how tone deaf a lot of the decisions have been recently. But it's nice to dream about what could have been...

we know the doctor can regenerate the same form as shown when he regenerates as tennant from his severed hand, so maybe if jodie died next to jo martin the doctor would once again regenerate as the same form from jo martin so Jo would be a past doctor(possibly) and a future doctor

Personally I think that they should cast a new Doctor and start a bit fresh because of all the baggage that this era has. I'm not saying don't have another female Doctor or don't have a black Doctor, I think they should simply cast the person who feels the most like the Doctor.
I had already fallen off of Doctor Who by the time that Jodie Whitaker started but I tuned in to see how she would do and she just felt like she was playing dress up. She didn't have that kind of ancient but playful feeling that the Doctor should have. Like an elephant. I don't think she's a bad actor in fact she could have made a fantastic companion she just doesn't have the gravitas to play the Doctor...
The Doctors that do the best have a chameleon quality that makes you believe they have more knowledge and experience then you could possibly imagine but even through all the horrible things they have experienced and all the terrifying things that they know, they choose to live simple joyous moments on adventures but accepts the responsibility that all that knowledge and experience gives them when it comes to helping others.

How do you make the Jo Martin's version a future Doctor... Two very easy ways. The first is in a line back from the end of the 50th Anniversary. "I never forget a face" "You might come back to some old favourites."
    Easy.
The other is a little bit complicated:- Martin's Doctor was always the next Doctor. The Devision are the Time Lord's Capaldi's Doctor banished back in Hell Bent. They simply returned and took over Gallifrey after the events of the Timeless Children (which they used the Master to implement). The Doctor is on the run from them as they see her as a threat. The Devision are looking to quietly take over the universe, but with the Doctor out there it's going to be next to impossible. As for the Timeless Child... In truth it was an old fairytale, of the first Galifreyan to regenerate. The Master was, shock horror, lying and by controlling the Matrix he was able to literally re-write history.

There's also the third option of: why don't we just set the next series of Doctor who *during* Ruth's era? That is to say - we don't get a 14th Doctor next. The revelation of which actor is going to play the 14th Doctor can come after 3 seasons with Ruth during the Division era - or even after a few Division-era Doctors. Maybe we could get a whole season with two Doctors - where Ruth's immediate successor and the 14th Doctor are both "new" at the same time.

I really, REALLY hope it's Jo Martin!! Her appearance in Judoon could easily be explained with some clever writing... wait, oh no, Chibs isn't leaving
Edit: Another reason I want Jo to be the 14th Doctor is because of her TARDIS' appearance in Judoon. I don't like that a pre-Hartnell incarnation has the police box TARDIS. It could work if she's a 6B incarnation, but 6B is probably the least likely of the three scenarios.

I feel like Jodie's Doctor as an eternal activist could have worked if the script they gave her wasn't so clunky and preachy. She's a great actor so I have a hard time saying it's her fault and not the script considering that the dialogue of every character is generally cringe inducing.
Part of me thinks it was intentional to make her unlikeable so they'd not have to have another woman but idk it's probably just incompetence.

Okay, you say Jodie's had three seasons, but that's only gonna be 29 episodes. Every other modern Doctor (bar Chris) has had closer to, or upwards of, 40!
She should have had a fourth series. I think someone behind the scenes is panicking, and it may well be Jodie herself.

to be fair, when you consider every Jodie episode is 5 to 10 minutes longer, the actual screen time does end up getting closer to the others even though I suspect it still doesnt reach them.

Just do something bold and have 13 regenerate at the start of the next series without telling us. 2 full series and I still don't know what kind of person she is. I mean given they have now allowed the doctor to literally have no limits. She should be able to get out of any situation by just using the unlimited regeneration energy. Hostage situations should be a non issue going forward unless the villain knows she's immortal. Just have her trade herself over get killed and then let Jo 14 take over. I want to be excited when I see Dr Who again, not feel like they are trying to get me to agree to something I already agree with and you are not getting people who disagree to watch in the first place. So a no nonsense badass doctor who is a little morally flexible and maybe even goes a little power mad by the prospect of being immortal before coming back down to earth so to speak could be a good arc.

I don't think dislike of the 13th Doctor is sexist right off the bat. She's easily the weakest incarnation of the new who era but that doesn't necessarily make her bad. I think she's had some pretty good stories but they've mostly been just okay. I'd love the fugitive Doctor to be the 14th Doctor. It took a matter of seconds for me to recognize her as the Doctor. I haven't felt that instant recognition since Matt Smith.

My thoughts on Jo Martin as the Doctor... just in general I love her as the Doctor. I do not like where they've placed her as a Pre-Hartnell Doctor. I would not like ANYONE being presented as Pre-Hartnell cause it doesn't make any sense. The only place where it does make sense to place her is between Troughton and Pertwee and I hope they write that in at some point in the future.
In regards to the idea of Jo Martin being the 14th Doctor. This both can and can't work. First let me explain why it CAN'T work. The Fugitive Doctor has a very Classic Era looking Tardis interior, doesn't recognize the Sonic Screwdriver, doesn't know that Gallifrey has been destroyed, TWICE, and doesn't recognize 13, all of these facts makes it impossible for her to be a future incarnation of the Doctor. That said there is a Jo Martin can be 14 without contradicting any of the facts I just mentioned and it involves Tom Baker in the 50th Anniversary special. In that episode the Curator is clearly meant to be a future incarnation of the Doctor but he's wearing the face of a past incarnation, the 4th Doctor. He even tells the Doctor that he might find himself revisiting some past incarnations at some point in his future. This can make it possible for Jo Martin to play the 14th Doctor without contradicting all the evidence that points to the Fugitive Doctor being a past incarnation. The incarnation we see in series 12 would still be a past incarnation of the Doctor, that doesn't change, the 14th Doctor would just be regenerating BACK into the Jo Martin incarnation. This way Jo Martin can technically be both a past incarnation and a future incarnation at the same time.
Something I would do to make it clear that the Fugitive Doctor still exists in the past and is not going to come up in the future... given that the Curator was not wearing the 4th Doctor's costume maybe 14 should also have a different costume to set her apart from the Fugitive incarnation. It's also been suspected though never confirmed that the museum they were in was actually the Curator's TARDIS... plus I don't think a future incarnation would ever go back to that classic era looking TARDIS interior. So they should also give her a different TARDIS interior than the one we saw her in during Fugitive of the Judoon. And something else they could do to set the two apart and make it perfectly clear the Fugitive Doctor is still in the past... give 14 a Sonic Screwdriver... and I'd really like her to find the TARDIS sonic cause it still annoys me we only got that for one series and then it was replaced by something that looks like a sex toy.
Anyway... Jo Martin could also play the Fugitive Doctor again along side herself as 14. This could be the first "Multi-Doctor Story" where two incarnations of the Doctor are played by the same actor. We have had an actor playing against himself before but those weren't considered Muti-Doctor stories because both Doctors were the same incarnation... or one was some kind of clone... or one was an entirely different character in the story. Jo Martin playing both the Fugitive Doctor and the 14th Doctor would technically be two different incarnations of the Doctor played by the same actor. In the same way that that the 4th Doctor and the Curator are two different incarnations both played by Tom Baker.
