    just want to say a big thank you to Junkie XL, who has very generously opened so many things to the world that we can get a lot of knowledge and "gold" that is very expensive and valuable, which probably not many big composers in the world want to do like you do, Tom. Thank you so much for sharing with us. No wonder you can be so blessed and successful.

    Another super awesome tutorial tip giving video !!! Thanks Tom, to all asking questions about how he has the VSL Libraries connected out, go to some of his earlier "setup" video's he does shed enough light on the way he has things connected there. But basically 1 Main Master machine running Cubase Pro 9.5 (now) and it was at the time talking to [6] Server machines, and all those did was house the Sample Libraries in different variances, I think one was dedicated to his own custom Diva and Zebra stuff / another for the Vienna Strings, Berlin Strings, East West... another was Drum and Percussion, another Woodwinds and Brass, etc etc... much is done in the early setup phase of his rig, and his master template which is loaded all the time, and the custom touch screen lets him dictate to Cubase what's active and a fast way to see what sounds and libraries he is using.... and there's a router and switch that he said would send up to 10GB transfer speeds, The server just hosts the data, the main machine is the director, and points to when and where it needs to pull from. Might be season One of Studio-Time Episode's 1-3... I think the key for the servers is to max out the Ram and SSD drives for speed, his older machines had 128GB of Ram... RAID Arrays just increase the speed nicely.

    First off, thank you for a great video!
    Been thinking a lot about space. Me, along with a lot of other people of course, run my studio in my own home, and space is a primary currency.
    As it stands now, it's more or less a regular home studio. A huge desk, some computer screens, a pair of studio monitors, some controllers/synthesizers, etc.
    I don't want my studio to be an entire room, and am basically looking for any and all tips about how to make the studio more compact and save space.

    The depreciation on server-grade equipment is incredible - I put together a dual-Opteron graphics workstation about a decade ago, and soon discovered that every time one of the big supercomputer / enterprise facilities did their regular upgrades you'd get all these secondhand high-end CPUs flooding the market for next to nothing. I'm still using that (now maxed-out) rig on a daily basis today, it's certainly getting a bit long in the tooth now but I can't believe how well it still holds up!

    • @weird_oscillator
      @weird_oscillator 3 роки тому

      A lot of the bargains you see are lease returns, which is great for the used market. Companies lease their equipment for 4 or 5 years, just like you would a car. When the lease is up, the equipment that gets returned ends up on eBay for a fraction of the cost new. Technology advances so fast that a 4 or 5 ear old machine is considered "obsolete" (even though it's really not), so you get tons of cheap, previous gen hardware on the used market.

    I've installed the London kit panels myself. The "impaling" brackets and screws they come with make two 1/4" holes per bracket... a lot of holes to fill if you're going to move in a year or two. You can use OOK picture hangers instead... they make tiny holes you can patch in a second leaving no trace. You can impale the panels on those OOK hangers.
    You can easily find them (or knock offs) in hardware stores, department stores, or online. I found packs of 50 of the larger ones for around $10.

    Hey Tom, thanks so much for the tips and Your work and commitment! I would be very happy, if You explain how exactly Your Cubase - Pro tools set up works. In an earlier Video You mention, that You use pro tools for Video and dialog; It seems like everyone uses it that way, but I can't find tutorials anywhere about how excactly. So how is the connection, how is the set up (slave, master etc.) how is the Audio connection, how the set up, how the video set up. (for instance in my set up, scrubbing in the video does not work over mmc in protools somehow...) So that would be really great. Thank You! best, ketan

    I am using the cheapest Mac mini as a server - but got it connected via 10 Gbs Ethernet (only Mac mini upgrade I bought) to a 16TB mirrored RAID, a 4TB and a 8TB SSD. I'm using the same network for remote access via a "KVM over IP" set to send HDMI from my main workstation to a screen in my recording room and a webcam, mouse and keyboard signal back - as my main computer produced way too much fan noise when it got really busy. Now I can even do sound recordings with no noise gates and need less treatment.

    Can you show us how you went about setting up the servers? From acquiring, to wiping, to prepping the data, installing and setting up to run your samples?

    • @jonathanbrooker7792
      @jonathanbrooker7792 5 років тому +2

      David Mac - its pretty straightforward though you’ll need patience and be happy tinkering with Windows and hardware for CPU and memory upgrades. Once you have your server sorted simply insert an SSD (minimum of 120GB for the OS) and connect up a USB DVD player. Insert Windows Server 2008 DVD and install. Once installed - takes around a couple of hours, then connect ethernet at the rear, unplug DVD player, configure your static network ethernet settings in Windows then logon to vsl.co.at to buy and download Vienna Ensemble Pro 6 (VEP6) and install. You will also need to do a Windows update to ensure Windows is up to date. Also worth setting up Windows Defender to ensure its antivirus protection is running. Also make sure your ethernet cable connects your server to a router or switch to which your DAW PC is also connected and also your broadband. If you plan to store all sample libraries on your server then you’ll need additional SSDs or HHDs installed ideally in RAID0 for faster load times. Then download and install NI Kontakt 5 and/or 6 and or PLAY. Then you need to build your VEP6 server template / server project with your samples and then you’ll be able to play them remotely from your DAW using the Vienna Ensemble Server plugin. Thats about it, in broad terms. You will also need to purchase the iLOK USB licenser that will allow VEP6 to load and run on the server. VEP6 comes with 3 licenses. For detail on setting up VEP6 there are a number of good videos on the VSL website and UA-cam. You can have as many servers as you like but limited to one VEP6 license per hardware server. One small note is to watxh the power utilisation when running more than a couple of servers. We have 12 in the studio guzzling around 1800watts per hour. Hope that all helps.

  • @blakecasimir
    @blakecasimir 5 років тому +2

    A few tips for long cable runs in machine room and similar situations:
    Use CAT6 Ethernet cable, anything less saves mere pennies and you risk signal deterioration potentially slowing down even a gigabit connection. 5E might be ok but 6 is so cheap it makes sense. 6A isn't necessary for a setup like this.
    Audio cables: use balanced and well-shielded cable! Run it physically separately from power cables otherwise you might still get noisy audio.
    USB: use good quality powered hubs and cables from a brand such as Anker. Powered signal boosting might be necessary depending upon distance.
    Computer screen cables: HDMI and display port only run so far, use good quality cables. Invest in signal boosters if necessary.
    I sometimes see server racks listed for sale SUPER cheap on local ads. There are also many options for rack mounted ATX PC cases for those that self build. E.g. Silverstone.

    Great little tips and video. Interesting to see your studio also utilises Dell servers. We’ve 12 in our studio running about 11TB of samples and libraries on VSL VEP6 on Windows Server 2008 and they are super stable. The only slight issue is that Cubase sometimes gets out of sync and can spend hours (if left unchecked) trying to get the Dell’s to re-load the libraries.

      did you contact cubase about your sync issue?

      Dreams and Promises - I did but having found that the only library with this issue is HZ Strings and then contacting Spitfire Audio again, they admitted that the HZ Strings plugin does have a technical issue that creates this problem in certain circumstances. They are trying to fix it for a forthcoming patch update. To me this surely demonstrates that more testing should have been done before it was good enough to sell. Perhaps another example of where marketing has led the way setting impossible deadlines and resulting in shoddy quality and poor customer experience. A mark down for Spitfire Audio they should know better than to sell something this expensive that is not up to the job!!!

      I agree. and that stinks because so many companies sold faulty software over the years including apple just to meat deadlines. they gamble that they can fix it b4 the majority of consumers get too mad and they compensate the really angry ones who wont stay quiet about it or offer free upgrades. ***hint, hint.*** I sold this stuff for 16 yrs. Good luck to you.

    Thanks for the info you 'junkie', you... There is a lot you can do with $1000, but it stops before buying gear and computers... Remember computers are always updating, so if you find a workable pc for around $300-500, you got about 2 to 3 years, tops, before you'll need to upgrade (It's been that way since the advent of the PC, it probably always will be.. I don't know) I work in a 10x10 room. I put up acoustic foam, panels (that I made) much like the ones shown. That helped me to tune the room to an acceptable point, though any square room is a problem for a good tuning. I have a very quiet iMac, but it can't fly 1500 instances of Kontakt (maybe 150 for a short cue). Can't have a template with everything preloaded, so I make my templates on the fly. There are some that I return to often, which helps in time management. I prefer Mac, so creating a more powerful rig is never cheap. No gear that I have makes any significant noise, but putting some of that in a whole different room would definitely cool my workspace down... but I don't have such a room in my tiny apartment. Oh, and treating my room acoustically, helps keep the sound in (so not to bother the neighbors), but outside noise is big problem for me... not sure what to do about that. Also, I consider myself quite busy. I get lots of work and have a good client base, but living in San Diego/SoCal I'm just scraping by every month. Working 18 hr days, sitting down, is not helping the shape of my butt, but I do take a lot of breaks, and I spent $600 on a good chair (a slightly used Aaron chair)... it does make a difference, and was a wise investment. Any extra money that comes along (not very often), goes into a gear fund. My goal is to get into a modular synth rig, and other vintage synths/keys. At this rate, I should be able to do something around 2043... ;) I appreciate your generosity with your info and tips, Tom. Please keep sharing your experiences. It has been helpful. Thank you.

    Hey Tom,
    I am going to build a producerdesk from scratch and was thinking about buying some surface panels in a do it yourself store. You know, the one they use in kitchens to put the sink in?
    Great and verry handy material because it's in wood. What tips do you have on how to integrate a master midi keyboard, pc monitor stand and most of all: cable management.
    Give us your thoughts.
    Cheers Ivan

    I'm not quite ready for the server room, great idea I have run out of space and want to be able to access all my samples and instruments from my laptop which I use as my main workstation as it's so portable, any tips on that would be cool, was wonder how quick they would be accessing from the cloud maybe, if anyone does that directly and it maybe just caches what you currently use
