    It took me months to find a job after uni and when I did they rescinded my offer because they had layoffs. Idk if it’s worse getting laid off or not even having a day on the job 😭 either way they should both be illegal, there were people working at the company for decades that got laid off. Since then I still haven’t gotten another job

      That sounds really tough. It's unfair when job offers get taken back, especially after searching for so long. It's hard to say what's worse, not even getting a chance to start or losing a job after starting. Hang in there, and I hope things turn around for you soon. I'm also a Gen-Xer and I would have to disagree with the Gen-X Microsoft Career Coach. 1-3 years at startups does not make a candidate a "job hopper". 1 year at a startup = 5 years at a regular job because you learn so much. Also, she's not thinking of how much pay you lose when you stay at a job that long. They only give you like 3% raises typically.

    I feel this, got laid off in mid-July, still unemployed. Took a much needed break and did no job searching for the first month and a half or so. Got some interviews but nothing came out of them and it feels like they're getting more and more scarce. Job searching is easily one of my least favorite things to do, as a result I now feel so burned out. At this point doing more then the bare minimum to maintain unemployment benefits each week feels like a monumental task.

      I got so freakin' lucky when I landed my 100% remote software developer role for a defense company, they pissed me off not giving me the security clearance but the work/life balance has been amazing and experience is GOLD. I was applying to TONS of jobs, I gave up for a while. I went back to Indeed one random week and just ended up applying to my current company for a software developer role, recruiter reached out and I had a fairly easy technical interview with no coding challenge.....I was leaving a very toxic and political fintech company and timing was insanely good.
      Keep trying.....it's rough out there but a lot of work with a little luck pays off at some point! I understand as I hate the job search process now too lol. Working as a C#/Blazor developer currently.

  • @anthonyju6392

    Don't you hate it how companies will put out job postings when they aren't actually hiring. They do it for data purposes firstly to know how replaceable their own people are for a certain position and secondly to know how much supply of labor is out there to grab. The number of postings is actually pretty high like more than 50% of all postings you see are either fake or not hiring.
    It is freakin BS and there should be a law against this IMO.

    Some career advice. Asking you to take a paycut like that is disgraceful behavior and you shouldn't tolerate it. Move on immediately. What they were trying to do is to get you to resign so they wouldn't have to pay unemployment. Do not keep contact with scumbags like that. They aren't going to be successful and have lousy morals. Networking with them can never help you. Their friends will be scumbags too, and anyone who they refer you too will assume you are a scumbag by association. Layoffs sometimes happen. Don't take it personal. Just something you have to live with. Anyways read the book From Paycheck to Purpose. That will help you find a better job that you will be happy with a job long term.

      That thought was in the back of my mind but I wasn't sure if they were truly that EVIL when they offered me a pay cut. You're right about keeping my distance from them. They are slowly gaining a bad rep amongst the industry. 😅

      Unemployment is paid indirectly by employers via a tax, not directly per employee. So it doesn't save them money to get you to quit to avoid unemployment. It might save them a voluntarily agreed to severance, but the vast majority of employment is at-will, so any severance is not mandatory and they could just straight lay you off. It's reasonable to say you should never accept a pay cut as a matter of principle, but there are non-nefarious reasons why an employer would reduce your salary (e.g., controlling costs, trying to avoid laying others off, etc.).
      That said, from an employer standpoint, it rarely makes sense to reduce comp. If someone is underperforming or if the position just isn't financially viable at the current comp, reducing comp just creates a spiral. Financially, it usually makes more sense for both parties just to part ways.

  • @nicholaspetitt
    @nicholaspetitt 4 місяці тому +1

    The problem that I have with a "job hopper" accusation is that I do not have control over the length of time that I stay with a company. It is not under my control if I get laid off or restructured. Like sorry? I didn't decide to leave on my own, I got downsized. How is a "job hopping" resume my fault? Maybe companies should manage their labor better so that they don't lay people off after just a couple years into the job / role. Maybe they should be better funded. Maybe companies should do more to retain their workers rather than blame the employee for having a "job hopping," resume. The same older people who don't hire young people are the same ones who will lay your ass off if it saves their department a few dollars or to watch their stock go up.

    • @nicholaspetitt
      @nicholaspetitt 4 місяці тому

      To add, the longer you are unemployed, likely from a job loss you didn't want, the worse it is for your resume so it's a catch - 22. Like, you could hire me so that my "job hopper" resume looks better.

    Everything I’m seeing with the job market rn from people with liberal arts to stem degrees is really making me feel like healthcare is the ONLY path to some sort of job security!!!! Even engineers/engineer degrees are struggling with getting a job! Their salary doesn't keep up with inflation but they know they will never be out of a job because of their loyalty and commitment (even if they were fired it would be an insane payout). 🤞
      Healthcare is similar in a sense that it's stable and not as high paying. I think that our generation is slowly learning that we need and crave stability > a high paying job. 🙌

    Over 3 decades I'd been with 3 startups that made it and whose software products are still in use today. Based on your presentation here, it sounds like it's true, you're not the person for a startup. Chaos and instability is part of the deal, it's not for everybody. Not a criticism.

    • @TechSav18
      @TechSav18  7 місяців тому +1

      Wow that’s amazing! 😮
      I feel like my previous start up has no potential either. A lot of the investors/customers were catching on to their bs.
      I don’t think I’m a start up person either. I’ve learned a lot of great things though from being in several ones. But idk if I want to go back in it again. 😅

      @@TechSav18to be sure, if I were looking for a job now, I'd avoid a startup too. A lot of stuff can happen in the unorganized chaos and at this point I wouldn't want to deal with it no matter what the potential for success might be !

    Please don’t listen to that career coach. That’s abysmal backwards thinking. I’ve had no difficulties getting jobs at big companies even though I’ve only stayed at a job 1.5-3 years each. Each time I left, I got like 30-60% increases. Staying for 5 years minimum is such outdated advice especially when companies have such little incentive to give you raises if you stay. If you have what the companies are looking for (which involves tailoring your resume to their postings), they won’t care that you haven’t worked long at each company.

    • @TechSav18

      It's great to hear about your experiences landing jobs at big companies and getting significant increases. You're absolutely right that the job market has evolved, and companies often prioritize skills over tenure. Tailoring your resume to match what they're seeking is definitely key. Appreciate you watching the video! 💜✨

    me resume from 2017 to now seems like i have been job hopping for 7 years bu these jobs include the 4 years of my life at university I had to go home in the summer and move back in again in the new academic year which means I would need to change jobs pretty quick and also focus on studies..... sometimes I wonder if their wiseness just gone out the window. Surely they would know why , also pandemic, and change of career soo again, they seem to be like narrowminded

    • @TechSav18
      @TechSav18  7 місяців тому

      What I’ve noticed is that small to medium sized companies that are about ~20 years old or less don’t really care about job hopping.
      It’s the ones that have been around for ages filled with thousands and thousands of employees who wonder about job happing A LOT. they are so stuck in their ways and what I’ve come to terms with is that if they don’t realize that times are rough out there, I don’t want to work for them.
      I hope that everything works out for you and I appreciate you sharing your story. You got this. 🤞💜☺️

      Great question! ☺️
      I wouldn’t mind at all!! I wasn’t being paid amazing in tech since I only worked in a startup environment. I would say the pay was on par or ~$10k more per year (which isn’t much of a difference after tax) when compared to healthcare industry.
