Before I knew anything about car maintenance, I use to blow out my engine air filter with pc duster. I didn't have any clue back then what replacement filter to get, I was dead broke too. I must of used the same one for 7 years. I was also able to change the oil only because I had the correct socket wrench, but never changed the oil filter.

Using an air compressor can cause microscopic small holes in the paper media, allowing dirt passed the filter. The smaller dirt particles actually cause the most damage like cylinder scoring etc. vacuuming every 30k miles won't harm the filter. The more loaded with dirt the better it'll actually filter. The more you change the filter the more damage you'll cause too. As long as you don't get a check engine light for system too rich or a MAF issue you can probably never the replace filter.

Long ago, I once heard the dirtier the filter gets, the better it cleans. I came to your vid cuz I was skeptical again when I brought my daughter’s car in for a simple fix but then they tell you about these other issues like filters. On the farm, we had outer and inner elements, and other pre-cleaner methods. Without dragging on, I let them change the rubber but not the filters for now. During COVID times they can now send a video of their inspection, but I’d still rather hold up those filters myself into the light. I agree with you, corporate greed needs to be in check (by you).

cleaning the filter as long as no rips develop should be ok. a clogged filter will affect HP more than durability. If car runs well day to day then airflow likely sufficient.

I manage a fleet of vehicles that operated in a dust pit essentially. If we replaced when they were dirty then that would be everyday at $150 a piece. What we did was ran one 8x longer than normal, then shipped it back to manufacture for testing. Testing showed that it was still filtering as normal, actually better because the pores we're even tighter but that fuel economy suffered.
    So Vegas you are correct!!!!!

I replace mine every 30K miles, even though the manual says 10K miles. When I checked it at 10K it still looked new, so I waited. One thing that you DO want to do, however, is CHECK the air filter, even if you don't replace it. A couple of times now I have found mice nesting in there and they chewed up the air filter. This, of course, let more dust into the engine. Luckily, I think I caught it in time.
