Hi Chet! I'd personally want to thank you so much for making this video, your words resonated heavily with me. Several months back, I had an epiphany that life really is short and my current position (although stable and cushy) has been unfulfilling. From this, I've spent much time planning, setting goals, and building out a path to lead me where I want to be. Reflecting back from when I had that realization to now, I've made tremendous strides. I've finally understood what people meant by "having a motor that drives them" because once I figured out what my passion is, I'd do anything to progress toward it. Even doing things that led to me stepping outside my comfort zone to grow my skills, knowledge, and as a person. Finding that "spark" that starts the fire and shines the way out of the tunnel has been monumental. If I were ever to be in your position and had to leave a piece of advice, it would be to "fail, but fail fast", so that you continuously experiment to find that passion or at least have an idea of what you may or may not be good at. I wish you good luck on your ventures, thanks again Chet!

I absolutely resonate with your sentiment Chet! I'm a thirty year old high school && college drop out, who taught himself programming at the age of sixteen and is also not governed by money. For me, it was the journey of trying to understand the world that is around me. There's just some things money can't buy like the process of success, friendships, and determination to build yourself up to a better state of mind. For me, the escapism programming gave me during my childhood helped me discover my passion. I've always been the type of person to seek out knowledge over power. I remember being five years old and asking my mother questions like: How do power lines work? Where does electricity come from? - You get the point, I was highly inquisitive at a young age. I've always had the innate urge to understand things for myself and not be told. It's probably why I didn't like the tech industry when it came to software development. I felt suffocated and more like a cog in the wheel than an individual. These companies and the industry do everything in their power to min max capitalism and it's led us down a dark path, where the individual must sacrifice for the greater cause, which erodes the talented individual's creativity to release good products. I saw a few rash related comments so I'll just write this in case you're not aware of it. And I wouldn't necessarily mention this if I didn't have a similar condition. A lot of the time these kinds of rashes have to do with more serious underlying medical conditions. Autoimmune issues etc. They have to do with the gut a lot of the time. I start getting rash on my face when I eat milk, sugar, chicken and some other foods. Autoimmune conditions can apparently be healed, or at least kept in check, with adopting a certain strict diet. There are people like Dr. Cynthia Lee and Dr. Berg on youtube who have basically the necessary information when it comes to this thing. I've noticed that when I changed what I eat I also don't get sick the same way as before (and I got sick often). There does seem to be a correlation.
Good for you. To leave such a piece of shit company takes balls. Just like neglect can be considered abuse, the same way Valve released CS2 and the way they don't give a shit about it is truly astounding. The game is almost unplayable with cheaters at every turn. Every match is basically hvh. If they really don't give a shit about CS, just sell the franchise to Riot. I'm sure the game will be in a much better state if Riot was working on it.
I would have left Valve, too, they just don't care about making games anymore, it's all about the $$$. Why actually do work when you can just sell games and make it a thousand times easier and less stressful. They are never going to release Half Life 3.
Try curring out cards, people have had success with that helping with skin conditions or anything processed or high sugar. Thanks for all your work, it be awesome to see what you did next
just so you know, the games you helped shipped are not just "games" but thanks to the accessibility of the source engine and its customizeability, it will live for as long you and me will. these games, half-life 1 and 2, the episodes are GRAN-DI-OSE. gmod gave the game such a lifespan, the source engine has proved to be so stable for so many things. you may not be front and center like figures like gabe, but if valve creates games like these, they will live far longer than most games in the zeitgeist of the public because of how open they are made.
I became a fan of you and Wolpaw after Portal 1, then played Portal 2 and episode 1 and 2 and then, tbh, never really heard anything of you two again, lol. But it's good to hear from you after such a long time via YT algorithm, good luck with your new projects.
Whatever happens at Valve now I cannot foresee or stand behind. To you I'm forever grateful for writing my favourite game series ever and I wish you the best, in whatever form it may be.
Eliminating grains (wheat, corn, barley, rye, rice, millets) and seed oils from your diet may help with rosacea. Sugar as well. NAC and silymarin (milk thistle) to support the liver.
I have rosacea as well and I have to take such good care of my face to make sure I don’t have an outbreak. I also can’t drink alcohol because it will make my entire face red and itchy.
The rosacea was only mildly distracting and only because I didn't recognize what it was. I'm not sure what the best way to deal with that would be, to be honest. A quick aside to address and dismiss it near the start, maybe? As for people whose advice is to just optimize compensation, I guess their main source of "number go up" type satisfaction is from watching their net worth grow? For some people money becomes some kind of high score to be maximized, to the detriment of everything else and just for the sake of it. It does come in handy, though, unlike Internet points that just give you sweet brain juices.
how we measure success says a lot about who we are, sales numbers are much less important than innovating on tech, making unique experiences and building up experience that can be shared with those just starting out.
It's nice to have the luxury of being able to fail. Some (if not most) of us can't follow our passion because we have to pay the bills and support a family :P Glad you can do that, tho. I wish I could too.
Chet, I understand your reasoning for leaving valve and that you stand by your decision. With that said, does any part of you regret not being a part of half life alyx?
@@chetfaliszek that's a good point. It might be harder to enjoy the project as a fan if you worked on it. Mr. Newell has said in the past that any time he plays the first half life all he sees are mistakes. Thank you for taking the time to answer. Reminds me I need to play the Anacrusis
Damn it man, I'm TRYING to develop a hard shell around my soul so I can chase money! Worrying less about that sounds nice, and you're killing me over here! (Didn't even know you had a YT channel! Glad I found it. You may not prioritize it, but you should list your stuff on things. ... You know what I mean. Good luck with things.)
Hi, Chet! I was an educator and recently left to make vr games and movies with my friends. As you said, it was probably not the wisest choice financially, but life is too damn short and I'm sick of watching other people have fun. I'm willing to suffer and kick rocks at this point because I was suffering doing something I didn't find fulfilling, so may as well suffer doing something I enjoy haha; to wit, I literally ate broccoli and potatoes for lunch today lmao Thank you for the inspiration, motivation, and insight. I instantly subscribed, and can wait to watch your numbers change with you!
@@chetfaliszek no lies detected, especially in this weather. And yes! I have the good fortune of having a close friend in the same situation as me, and we're both curious about TikTok and UA-cam, so we're making videos and building a VR game chunk by chunk. Its much more fun with a friend, and it's faster to learn that way, too. Failing fast and learning each time! Its hard balancing what we enjoy vs what the algo likes, but I think once we find a sweet spot we could really turn it into something special.
Funnilly enough the main reason I watched this video is because of your rosacea. The video title was second reason. My reaction was "this guy must have seen some serious sh*t." but that really is a compliment. You seem like a cool guy and Valve is amazing but can't stay there forever. Great video! and God bless everyone here
Hello chet I just found your channel right now and it's very facinating to find your channel you as an Ex-employee of Valve, but I never thought I would find one of your videos and that's where I asked myself. Will be a documentary about Valve's downfall? or will be a documentary video about also this type of Video. Is Valve going to collapse or stay the same? It's very nice to hear from you what you think and also it's very good reason why you left Valve because right now the company begins to behave like nintendo. Stay strong and never let yourself down keep the work you love doing as a hobby or interests!
I had no idea you were on UA-cam :O This was a super interesting video to watch, although my circumstances are quite different your experience at valve reminds me of my old job where i knew everything there was to know and was just coasting Not interested in that, it's better to go into something that genuinely interests you and that your passionate about even if it means it's less money for more actual work, it gives me a reason to live :P
What I'm happy about is that more of the Valve creators have used the platforms they have access to, to voice what it was like to work at VALVe and other companies on the games of my formative years. With so many developers and films with behind the scenes extras, I was so interested in the enigma that was Half-Life and Metroid Prime. Years later, we finally got to see what it was like! It helps ground everything. It seems like a dream, but to hear grounded, down-to-earth people talk about a real--not fantasy--experience is rewarding. oh yeah and I also touch my face too much when I'm anxious
2:00 "people say valve doesnt ship games" then present as evidence games released from 1998 and 2004, 2006 and 2012. Unless I missed something all of those games you listed were over 10 years ago. So when people say "valve doesnt ship games" you cut off the part where they also say "anymore" so, good job proving everyones point I guess?

I feel like I won’t get to enjoy what I’m working on until I’m retired from a traditional occupation.
I needed inspiration today and UA-cam said: "I gotcha bro, Chet got something to say to you"
Good for you.
Thanks for all your work, it be awesome to see what you did next
just so you know, the games you helped shipped are not just "games" but thanks to the accessibility of the source engine and its customizeability, it will live for as long you and me will. these games, half-life 1 and 2, the episodes are GRAN-DI-OSE. gmod gave the game such a lifespan, the source engine has proved to be so stable for so many things.
you may not be front and center like figures like gabe, but if valve creates games like these, they will live far longer than most games in the zeitgeist of the public because of how open they are made.
thank you for this video it really helped me open my eyes to some things
Love this video Chet.
thanks!
I became a fan of you and Wolpaw after Portal 1, then played Portal 2 and episode 1 and 2 and then, tbh, never really heard anything of you two again, lol. But it's good to hear from you after such a long time via YT algorithm, good luck with your new projects.
The teams notifications are infinitely more threatening than rosacea. As a starting indie game developer, loving your thoughts.
i needed to hear that. keep pursuing your passion. btw i also have rosacea in my face. that's twice relatable
Whatever happens at Valve now I cannot foresee or stand behind. To you I'm forever grateful for writing my favourite game series ever and I wish you the best, in whatever form it may be.
Really great stuff man!!
Eliminating grains (wheat, corn, barley, rye, rice, millets) and seed oils from your diet may help with rosacea. Sugar as well. NAC and silymarin (milk thistle) to support the liver.
Dudes that do not subscribe to the big fella, you are missing out.
love the video man.
I have rosacea as well and I have to take such good care of my face to make sure I don’t have an outbreak. I also can’t drink alcohol because it will make my entire face red and itchy.
Very excited to see what you do next. You were a part of valve during their golden era, thanks for all the amazing work you’ve done.
Are you related to Tyler McViker?
"I LIKE WHEN NUMBER GO BIGGER" real interesting stuff here chet
"whatever!" -Chet 🤩
'why did you leave valve?'
'we're all gonna die in the end'
mm, mhm, sage, sage
i respect your outlook and wish nothing but good luck in your future!
omfg the teams notification at 3:32 kill me
The rosacea was only mildly distracting and only because I didn't recognize what it was.
3:31 Who else thought that was their own teams notification
Sorry!
Didn’t know you had a channel. Subbed and hope others in the valve games and adjacent communities discover your channel.
It's nice to have the luxury of being able to fail. Some (if not most) of us can't follow our passion because we have to pay the bills and support a family :P
Glad you can do that, tho. I wish I could too.
Chet, I understand your reasoning for leaving valve and that you stand by your decision. With that said, does any part of you regret not being a part of half life alyx?
Sort of a little but not really, good smart team working on it and it was fun to experience it as a fan.
I'm willing to suffer and kick rocks at this point because I was suffering doing something I didn't find fulfilling, so may as well suffer doing something I enjoy haha; to wit, I literally ate broccoli and potatoes for lunch today lmao
Thank you for the inspiration, motivation, and insight. I instantly subscribed, and can wait to watch your numbers change with you!
First we had broccoli and potatoes saturday... can't got wrong with that combo - but you having fun now?
@@chetfaliszek no lies detected,
especially in this weather.
My reaction was "this guy must have seen some serious sh*t."
but that really is a compliment. You seem like a cool guy and Valve is amazing but can't stay there forever. Great video! and God bless everyone here
0:32 - You like seeing numbers go from 0 to bigger - yeah, Valve isn't the place for you unless bigger = 2!
Hello chet
I just found your channel right now and it's very facinating to find your channel you as an Ex-employee of Valve, but I never thought I would find one of your videos and that's where I asked myself.
I had no idea you were on UA-cam :O
This was a super interesting video to watch, although my circumstances are quite different your experience at valve reminds me of my old job where i knew everything there was to know and was just coasting
Not interested in that, it's better to go into something that genuinely interests you and that your passionate about even if it means it's less money for more actual work, it gives me a reason to live :P
i have no idea how I got here but cool video.
Cool video. Not something you had to say or do :)
Very motivating, thanks man!
just stumbled on this video.. did you work with someone called Dario Casali? old friend of mine!
2:00 "people say valve doesnt ship games" then present as evidence games released from 1998 and 2004, 2006 and 2012. Unless I missed something all of those games you listed were over 10 years ago. So when people say "valve doesnt ship games" you cut off the part where they also say "anymore" so, good job proving everyones point I guess?
if you work at valve for this long I guess you have to be selectively stupid.
Every time he goes "I love Valve" in this video, I hear the silent acknowledgement of this being the actual reason he left.
cookie clicker enjoyer I suppose?
also, sorry for stupid suggestion but Candida and Malassezia may be your "problem" (didnt noticed till you pointed out)
4:25 Bit of an understatement being 27% negative.
Is this a recent thing or answering a question about the past?
OOf... yeah everyone has different causes - even in my own family!
great video, and inspiration
No way is this the guy who made Lethal Company?? I always thought that game had a very Valve-esque aesthetic.
loving the energy
Basically, he's more interested in artistic expression through creating games visually and storytelling than just money.
