Why I voted for Harris - selfish edition
It sounds like Valve was a pleasant company for you to work at. Hopefully someday I can experience the same sense of community when I join a company someday.
Ok, this one was _specially chaotic_ , I like it. So basically, when you have "unlimited" money (Steam), your true budget is measured in "humans available".
Even other companies with unlimited money - staff up... that's just not the valve way so human resources - literal people - are the most valuable thing in the company.
If it provides comfort through honesty I noticed for like 1/2 a second and immediately stopped caring. I’ve found 99% of people immediately tune out any facial / body issues the diagnosed may be anxious about presenting with in public, because the human brain is built to ignore distractions if they do not signal danger, it’s the same reason your brain tunes out loud talking if you read a book in an office. realizing this made me less anxious about my acne when it was really bad as i realized i was all worried because ONE person was a jerk, when they made up 1/1000th of the people i pass every year; at that scale jerks will be abundant anyway
(those are made up numbers) lol :D
Honestly Chet, if you started a podcast and spoke to different members of the industry every week for an hour I bet it would do very well. I love these story videos.
It's easy to look back at these anecdotes about integral parts of what made L4D interesting and think "Wow, they were so wrong. What were they thinking?!" But it must have been such a new risky territory to walk in. Multiplayer games usually have to be looked at like theme park queues with foam padding and curved edges on absolutely everything.
this sort of ~10 minute story/design vid is super inspiring and insightful ❤
The people who complain about how blocking lets you "never hearing any other opinions outside of your own" I get bombarded with all sorts every day at work, on public transport, when I'm just out and about Do they not have that? Or do they just really really miss having people they see as lesser to bully
Chet, we would love you to play Entropy : Zero 2 sometime and let us know what you think of it. You were going to test it at one point! :) And I loved the episodes btw. They did so much for me. So thank you!
People are less fun about people who wear masks where I live
I remember hearing about people talking about how you needed to put in an hour of ontense exercise before dying anything and then they'd try to sell you some supplement or whatever There's a lot of people who say they have the magic solution to make it work every time but i don't think there are any
Good stuff Chet. I always assumed it was like the High School culture people said it was, so good to hear the alternative.
Thank you so much for the landscape orientation.
I love hearing all of these stories from your time at Valve, it's such a fascinating company. The bit about asking the engineers to try a versus match together was brilliant lol.
It is as buggy as STALKER 1 on release, but I was in those trenches, other than a few crashes the game has played perfectly. Everything I wanted it to be. If you wait, it will only get better.
Wow it's incredible to hear that someone who is leading the project cares about what every team member thinks about the project. Our project directors couldn't care less about what team members think. They just rule that's it. Even if you are right and you have to redo the work multiple times, you would still not get heard. It's politics.
as a fellow not smart person i envy your career and experiences. Love these longer talks
How much veto power does Game Newell have?
Lol amazing typo, not correcting that one 😂
All the power I'd imagine lol
Considering he owns the company... all of it.
This is my favourite video of yours so far. Answers a lot of questions that I had in the back of my mind. I'm so glad Left 4 Dead turned out as amazingly as it did. A question I had is when does music come into projects usually?
firsrt
3:46 for all they know it *is* the end of the world
DoD:S hat? That's awesome
I have an OpenAI shirt from when I beat their bot at TI7. It’s been… interesting seeing its meaning change over the years.
Call it a miss but are those the OVERKILL Software socks? Man, havent seen those in ages!
We have a winner!
Biggest lie I was ever sold was that as I'd get a ton of merch. I've never been more disappointed about the amount of swag I've managed to get from work and industry events.
I would guess the socks are from Overkill / Starbreeze. Probably during the talks of the Left 4 Dead / Payday crossover
That is a winner -was showing them VR actually that week.
that thumbnail looks so silly it's like it's been intentionally photographed to look like that like a painted portrait or smthing, yknow? it's inticing, kinda...
oh... and an MSI backpack which included a Dogtag with the MSI logo... odd choice. Like they wanted my family to know I was a gamer if I got shot.
I got some D-Link socks for reasons... a HP Basballcap, a AMD Ryzen waterbottle and I still have a bunch of TP-Link notebooks.
lmao, I was just playing Episode 2. And yeah, Alyx did thank me. I love these games
Somewhere I've got a shirt of Bumblebee ghostriding on top of Megatron that we made for the team when shipping a Transformer 3DS game... that one's weird.
Ever wonder what the bottom of an Xbox shoe looks like? *Wha-bam*, there it is.
it's fine for me.
Santa Monica Studio sent me a collector's edition of GoW Ragnarok because I did some work for them, along some limited edition prints, a mug, and a ton of PS3 games :D
I have a shirt with the Unity crash popup printed on :)
For the socks, I'm gonna guess from a Nintendo studio, but I really have no clue haha
throw in those mc jordans and you'll be blazin
3:21 Well, I’m very happy to hear that Jameis Winston won a Super Bowl after an undefeated season. I hope the creepy guy with the bloated contract is excised from the Browns expeditiously. Reacting to the actual body of the video though, it is refreshing to hear that Valve’s internal perspective on the games industry is one of fostering growth rather than pillaging it for all it’s worth. With the power a platform like Steam gives them, I do worry about that from time to time, though the company’s behavior typically shows its benevolent side, especially in comparison to most of the big names in the games distribution sector (though they’ve got some catching up to do to be as good for gaming as GOG is <3).
Living the dream
Are you madden? You sound crazy /jk
HL3 confirmed
only cool things i have is a dwarf fortress shirt and a meta quest 2 plushie from a giveaway

Drip drip
Ive got some NES controller print on some socks. Like, its a repeating pattern of the controller all over
i only played one football game on the OG xbox being madden 03 to this day i still cant enjoy games like that but more power to the one's you can
You took down the video talking about that L4D custom map? 1 minute long video or so
? Check shorts? They started moving things.
@@chetfaliszek Ah shit you're right, mb
I'd love to go to sweden one day, sounds like a blast
chet, i hate to be that guy, but I've always been a believer that tf2 will get a final update one day. when do you think valve will have time for it?
True!
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has also had a bit of a rough takeoff.
Has it? All the clips I see make it look beautiful
@chetfaliszek On launch day there were server issues, so very few people could actually get into the game. They have ironed out the issues in a lot of places, but some regions are still having issues.
