Christopher Judge delivers a stunning performance in this. I still think it would've been funny to hear Terrence Carson reprise his role as the voice of Young Kratos, saying even one or two lines. Then again, Young Kratos remaining silent is also a powerful and good choice.
That was the whole reason I opened this video, I thought they might have given TC a chance to reprise the role again. Especially after how disrespectful they were when they recasted, it would have been cool if they'd at least acknowledge his contributions to the character.
I feel the same, it would have been a nice surprise to see Terrence back, but leaving the young Kratos silent and stoic, letting old Kratos look at who he was and accept what he did and is powerful. The young Kratos does not interrupt or talk back, he silently accepts judgement.

While young Kratos was a flawed and rage fueled man, he also was still inteligent despite it being clouded, it's same inteligence, while older Kratos had wisdom younger Kratos should at least give some arguments back, maybe sound a bit reasonable despite being angry having that inteligence, not supported by wisdom but not weighted down by centuries of regret.
I think these are the seeds for a God Of War 1 remake you can't let that model go to waste and Sony isn't interested in porting the PS2 games to PS5. There's a lot of interest in action games after the success of Hi-Fi Rush, Bayonetta 3, FF16... IMO they're cooking a remake. The younger kratos sitting there menacingly was honestly perfect. The whole scene it felt like he could lash out and attack his elder self at any second.
They're beating a dead horse at this point. This was already all established and brought to a conclusion at the end of Ragnarok. I would have preferred a short story-driven DLC with Atreus and his journey beginning, kinda like an episode/challenge before actually starting his journey overseas to a new realm. Been hoping that Kratos's story is finally done, Atreus becoming the new main protagonist, and the gameplay returning to the more zoomed out and linear hack'n'slash the original trilogy was. Athena is still out there somewhere, don't know if she actually appeared in GoW2016 or just an illusion, probably just an illusion, but she could try to manipulate Atreus and gift/bound him his own chained blades.
“I believe I would like to sit here for a while.” You know, for a guy that’s always on the move, always fighting, always raging. The embodiment of energy and force. It’ll be so fitting if that would have been his final line as a way to end the series once and for all.
Legitimately thought that might be how it was gonna end. Although I'm thankful it wasn't since there's definitely still some stuff left for Kratos as a character.
@@ahairyhooliganNo confirmation that I know of, but I think it’s very likely the next game could center squarely on Atreus and Angrboda (possibly Sigrun as well) venturing into a new pantheon

Christopher Judge as Kratos will go down in history as one of the absolute greatest voice acting performances of our time, across any kind of medium. Every syllable, every word, every grunt or hesitation just pulls you in and doesn't let go.
I love how the whole thing is basically as a monologue in a classic greek theatre composition: Playing between the first and third person, declaming in front of an significant objet, the body movements, the changes in tone and pace... sublime!
I believe this must be the longest speech Kratos evet gave. Perhaps even the first time he did not talk in laconic way. They set this scene beautifully.

Honestly, one thing i thought would have been poetic was that accepting himself as a god of hope and sitting down on the throne again, the ashes of his wife and daughter would have slowly broken off his skin and like the ashes of his new wife, would have blow out away as the curse placed upon him would finally broken
I think not, because it’s more like a psychic scar to him, it’s not an Illness, that’s needed to be cured, his cure is acceptance of what he did, why, and where did that led him.
I think it's worth keeping, less like a curse, and more like a scar, a reminder, so that he never forgets. He can accept the weight, but he can't stop carrying it.
@@Delfegor1 the makers of GOW have said that the ashes of his daughter and wife are actually fading from his body. it was a comment said when God of war 4 came out. its because of this that I thought since it seems him accepting who he was, moving on, learning about love again, learning to feel hope and interact, have friends, family and all that, has slowly released the ashes from his skin. That is why I thought it would be poetic that him accepting himself and his new role could have been acompanied by the ashes of his wife and daughter finally breaking the curse and falling from his skin as the Ghost of Sparta truly does vanish

I love this.. I EXACTLY love this scene... This was Really a Great development in Kratos personality and History, As Kratos looked at himself from the past and he was saying to himself that "Rage isnt everything, as there are more choices than the others give to you..." Hes basically looking at himself, and hes forgiving himself.. As His pale Ash skin is going away.. He letted the Bandages go to show that hes free to make his own choices to be a Kind God... To not let Anger once again turn him into a Monster.. Kratos has Truly became a Kind god that instead of Destroying.. He wants to Create, So that others Cannot make the same mistake he did...
I don't think the ashes will ever truly go away, but they will fade. They will be a reminder for him why he can't afford to be that man again, but their fading will show that he is no longer the selfish monster that gave up everyone and everything that matter.
Strip away all of his power and all of his rage, and we have a man, a soldier, who wants to be able to forgive himself for his past failures and let them go. A man who just wants to do better, to be better. For his family, his friends and above all, himself. That is why Kratos is so relatable. Because the hardest thing about the past, is learning to accept it.
This hits hard. Remember folks, you are not your mistakes. It is the nature of a person that matters, not the form you think you are. You will be better.
Would have been interesting/cool if the past Kratos had had a line or two, and used the original VO for continuity. I'm not even saying full conversations, but just a probing question that helps to push current Kratos further along his thoughts. Something like a pointed 'So what am I to you?' little probing questions.
I’m pretty sure there was some bad blood between the original VO and Santa Monica for how things ended between them. Could be wrong but that’s what I recall from watching an interview with him a while back.
I think it would have been great ( despite everything related to fanservice ) a fight between past and current Kratos so he could have defeat once and for all, all the regrets he had. But this is a great ending aswell, from god of war to god of hope, what an evolution
I actually prefer this. I mean he could have just had him defend himself from the younger one, but him just talking, confronting himself and his inner demons to find peace is better imo. This is mostly because it's something Kratos was always avoiding. An Inner reflection is something he never did and it shows character growth since he's actually talking through his own pain. It's therapeutic for a character who never got a guiding hand nor was taught how to resolve things with language and retrospective thinking.
@@renmcmanus Kratos was a LOT more agile back in those days, fueled by a pure blind rage that helped push him forward, And he was an expert tactician, so he knew how to get around most of the problems the other Greek gods gave him,but he still needed a lot of artifacts and gear and occasionally accept help to get as far as he did, Kratos now would will sheerly based on his increased invulnerability and strength he has built up through the ages
So when he Destroyed Greece And No Longe became the war god,He became The God Of Hope when he sacrifices himself To give Hope To the remaining Realms With Other Beings Not just Gods
I find Tyr so underrated here He is helping because he can and so he does, he doesn't judge kratos because he has an open mind and he fights kratos not to test himself but to help him focus because he knows thats what helps him focus. Tyr is a role model, a teacher and someone to be like and to admire everything Kratos belives that he can't be but he can and now that he has excepted that he cann be a god like Tyr. I know it’s been a while since you commented this but, and I know it’s not my place to suggest this, but if you can, maybe try and reach out to your wife, tell her that you’re sorry (and mean it), tell her you love her, and that you regret what you did to her. Don’t expect her to forgive you, and I can’t promise you will ever get back what you once had, but if you have a heart and mind willing to change, I believe anything is possible. But before that can happen, before anyone can forgive you, you have to forgive yourself. I’m eighteen years old, and already have a lot of regrets, mainly due to my political beliefs, I’m afraid that I’ll become someone I’m destined to become, a hateful religious zealot of my own ego, who oppresses those different than myself, people who never choose to be the way that they are, like I never choose to be the way that I am. I could sit here, and allow myself to be overcome by this worthless guilt that only chains me to the past I no longer have control over. But no, i refuse, instead I choose regret, because regret is what paves the way for redemption, for reconciliation, for forgiveness, and for growth. The only promise in life is death, the rest is up to you. Take care mysterious internet person.
I like that they didnt do a final boss against young kratos. He has raged against his past his whole life, fighting and hiding, now he embraces and finally accepts who he was and the mistakes he made. It is time to make peace and move forward unto a brighter future.
It is kinda sad to think that some people want Kratos to just be a ruthless killing machine when the whole point is that he has learned that that path brings nothing but pain and destruction, hence him always wanting to "be better". And him finally accepting his past is the cherry on top to conclude his arc so far
He becomes a philosopher in that moment, still a compromised man, but one who has come to a true understanding. His face and beard profile is presented very much in that way during the second half of the scene.
Yknow, seeing kratos finally and Completely accept himself for all of his traumas that he had during this 10 year+ journey, it is great (Also god damn that final tyr boss fight goes nuts)
kratos fighting his older self is basically taking away all of his development from the nordic saga. remember that kratos spent all of gow 2018 being ashamed of his past and is constantly trying to fight it as a way to sow the wounds he left. But by the end of gow 2018 and throughout the entire ragnarok game…we see Kratos finally accept that his greek era will forever be apart of him despite how hard he tried to fight/hide it in the 2018. Kratos sitting on the throne only proves his strength emotionally and how his connections with tyr, faye, atreus, etc…have only strengthened him and allowed him to accept the worst of his past.
@@noikfkzn5305Apart of me is a little bummed that we didn’t get a fight, but there’s no doubt that this is better in all accounts and fits the story far better. Would’ve a fight between new and old kratos be cool? Absolutely! But I think this is just more fitting for the character.
I know some people wanted a big fight, but I think this is perfect. That's not who he is anymore, and this shows the beginning of his journey and the end of his journey.
The fact that we got his redemption where he actually talked out his own forgiveness instead of a fight is equally as good to me. Who doesn’t have regrets in life and needs to forgiven themselves?
I rewatch this from time to time because it reminds us in our own lives that we can’t erase our sins. We can’t escape what we were. But we must accept what happened and be better. I love how kratos reminds himself “you chose” and then reminds himself that HE MADE THOSE CHOICES. And that he no longer holds the bonds on himself. Kratos knows that he believes that he should not be forgiven. But he has hope.
This is 200% exactly what I was hoping to see in the new series! What an amazing development of character and understanding. Seeing his past for more than the blood, anger, and unforgivable acts he committed and the recognition of his true character unburdened by the rage from his past or the isolation of his present.
I wish they got Kratos' previous VA to cameo as young Kratos, but this is awesome. Also, I'm pretty sure this is the most we've heard him talk and express outside of game play.

the acting is so incredible with Christopher judge here giving it his all you can feel the emotions Kratos is going through when he's just talking to himself basically
Kratos means strength in Greek, fitting that a man called Kratos is a God of War but also a god of hope. To stare at your mistakes right in the eyes takes a lot of strength
The choice of acceptance instead of a battle makes alot of sense tbh Killing young kratos Or the illusion of him would only confirm anyones suspicion that he hasnt changed one bit in the sense that he And i quote "Is a monster who kills without cause" The point of the last encounter is to confirm kratos is indeed a better man and wishes to continue on this path (I tried to explain the best i can english is not my first language)
From what I’ve seen from the DLC it really ask us the same questions that Kratos wondered. Was what he did throughout the original God of War just or not, as we can see his legacy was complicated filled with him doing horrible things, realizing the monster he was, and seeking the only thing he had left which was hate and vengeance, and his own death. We wonder, and contemplate a series we once thought of as mindless fun in a serious and nuanced way, showing us how much we grew in our ideals, morals, and ethics from when we were young. In the end Kratos is reminded of what Pandora said about hope and how it was what we fought for when we had nothing else. That was when Kratos began to regain his humanity and what by the end of Valhalla he concluded too, that he made terrible mistakes in his blind pursuit of revenge and destruction but was given a chance through his wife and son to be better and now sits on his throne not as a god of war, but one of hope, as we as the ones who have traveled on this journey with him must keep alive for those we love and care for.

This ending shake my core deep down my spirit. And i understand why they litterally gave it to us. I am not only a fan of God of War, when I was young, and all my family left me, i was wounderimg from friend house to foster house when I leave hell. I lived with crazy people that dont let me quit my home, always making me work, couldnt even do school homework, i found myself in kratos who lost everything but still charge at what he believe. He gave me so much strenght to keep going forward. I was getting beat sometimes just because i had nothing to defend myself than myself. I was enrage for so many years because of that. I had 3 kids now, and i am a good father who always tried to be better ... this hit me with such force when i saw it yesterday... i finally felt like ... i was finally enough, just like him. Thanks for this game to have been at my sides. And for the dedication of the developpers to give this opportunity to myself to face any evil that i had to face in life.
Young Kratos never says a word, and disappears without a moment of fanfare. Because, as much as Kratos would like, he's NOT a different person. There is no evil form of his past to confront, and shout down, and destroy. It's all, always, been him. He says, "you are more than that." And he realizes; "I am more than that." And that means there's no enemy left in himself to vanquish. Just a hope that he, that everyone, can become better.
I love that Kratos projects his pain, his wrong doings, and the worst of himself as Young Kratos, his words directing at “You Chose!” But when he finally realizes what he’s been doing possibly for all of his time in the Norse Lands. He switches to “I Chose” and chose he did, he accepted that he did those things. The first step to moving forward from mistakes and wrong doings, is admitting that you yourself were that person.
"I believe I would like to sit here for a while" If that was the final line that ended the God of War franchise, I wouldn't be disappointed. All good things must come to an end, and that final line from Kratos would be a beautiful way to end such an amazing series.
I feel as if Kratos, was speaking for me about how I view my own self as a man. As men we learn to stop loving ourselves, we reject ourselves and the idea of love and being loved. And yet Santa Monica studios captures the beautiful, interpersonal journey about a man learning to accept himself (reminding all of us to do the same) to me will be one of the greatest works of art in terms of video gaming ever so far. 1000 out of 10 game. Made me look at myself and how to handle my own situations in life differently. Motivates me to become a better man. Made me tear up in appreciation because of the fact that we’re even alive to get to experience something like this in this lifetime. Still don’t know if Spiderman 2 or God of War Ragnarok greatest of all time tho 😭 tuff
Just a note, I may miss other quotes, but he clearly quotes Pandora.... the same quote he came to terms with before he killed his father. "Hope is what makes us strong. It is why we are here. It's what we fight with when all else is lost." That's the funny thing, if you look at the big actions, ignore his history as a soldier; then that's exactly what Kratos was, a monster.
Kratos deserves to rest. I hope at the end of the God Of War series, the final scene is like Jesus taking him into a hug and forgiving him, releasing the pain and torment hes felt over the years. The ash of his wife and daughter fading and him finally feeling peace😭
The most amazing part of this video is Kratos' Demeanor starting from 5:29. Throughout God of war 2018 and God of war Ragnarok, he holds this painful, angry, frustrated look on his face. Even when Atreus was around he looked happy for his son, but not for himself. But after 5:29 you can see his demeanor, his face, the expressions, the way his eyebrows are arched upwards. He feels ... proud. He feels like he has forgiven himself. And that's the way to move forward. He looks freed of the pain and the remorse. He looks full of hope for the future. The pain and remorse is gone from his face, his brows and his eyes. "Open your heart to the world" he did, but now he has opened his heart to himself too. I trully believe that next time when we see kratos, he might be a happy man, laughing and making jokes even in the midst of battle. He will smile when he rebuilds homes for dwarves and midguardians. He will smile when fighting enemies and teaching friends how to fight.
I actually got scared when Young Kratos started to move,we have never been on the opposite side of this menace. We only played as him The fact that we are not fighting him,a giant health bar saying Kratos with red blood letters is a crime. We need to keep asking the devs for an update that lets us fight him,and it should be as epic as the fights with Baldur and Thor(first fight)

Maybe it's not super clear cut as we think, since Strength isn't everything.
2:51 This is what I liked about this part, Kratos is constantly ranting at him and rants how much of a horrible & unforgiving person the new God of War title holder is due to the various atrocities he has done and what he did to get his hands dirty for that seat, and that's until he realized that the new God of War isn't a different person or someone taking his form to mock him, it's *him* and now accepts how he isn't that good of a person he was. Then after learning how to approach certain subjects, he now self-reflects about his actions and what of a horrible person he was, he now accepts his new path of becoming the God of Hope.

@@DarkRei7 Tbf that's the pose Kratos assumed at the end of GoW1 when he finally took the throne of the God of War. So they were probably harkening back to that more than anything. But I would absolutely love to see a remake of the original trilogy with the visuals they have now
The younger kratos sitting there menacingly was honestly perfect. The whole scene it felt like he could lash out and attack his elder self at any second.
i think its more glaring defiantly then menacingly. as if the younger self hears the criticisms of his older self and doesn't care.
I like this development. He’s come to terms with his past, accepted the actions he made, and is ready to keep moving forward.
Like he did in every game prior.
Kratos will *keep moving forward* until all his enemies will be destroyed.

@@ahairyhooligan I think there will, I was just making a wishful comment that this could have been his final line in the series.

Well, not the whole series. Just Kratos' part, for now at least.
@@ahairyhooliganNo confirmation that I know of, but I think it’s very likely the next game could center squarely on Atreus and Angrboda (possibly Sigrun as well) venturing into a new pantheon

And even if it's not a "fight," it is definitely a real and just as painful battle in every sense of the word. So I personally, can be happy with this ending. I think not, because it’s more like a psychic scar to him, it’s not an Illness, that’s needed to be cured, his cure is acceptance of what he did, why, and where did that led him.
Well the director did say that it was slowly coming off. Maybe its just the start of everything coming off

"Rage isnt everything, as there are more choices than the others give to you..."
Hes basically looking at himself, and hes forgiving himself..
A God of Redemption. He knows that he doesn't deserve it, but that doesn't stop him
getting that tan back
Very true thank you Nishiki

@beckhornig7910 Well said my friend well said
fear kratos from gow 3 was one of the best bosses in the game

Words are greatest weapon of war.
Yeah that would have become so epic
Strip away all of his power and all of his rage, and we have a man, a soldier, who wants to be able to forgive himself for his past failures and let them go. A man who just wants to do better, to be better. For his family, his friends and above all, himself. That is why Kratos is so relatable. Because the hardest thing about the past, is learning to accept it.
I didnt know a therapy session could get so badass
There's nothing more interesting in a story then having the Hero or Major character confront their past self, to show just how much they have grown.
"Grown" but yes it's is always a welcoming sight seeing a character you know grow and confront their past self.
This hits hard. Remember folks, you are not your mistakes. It is the nature of a person that matters, not the form you think you are. You will be better.
This helps me
Would have been interesting/cool if the past Kratos had had a line or two, and used the original VO for continuity.
It's therapeutic for a character who never got a guiding hand nor was taught how to resolve things with language and retrospective thinking.
if this is the kratos at the beginning of gow 2 he wins, cause he's a full powered god.

I like the meta commentary here with Kratos saying “you are more than what people think of you”
You are more than just a single player experience!! You are the shared developmental male consciousness coming into its own!!
It is kinda sad to think that some people want Kratos to just be a ruthless killing machine when the whole point is that he has learned that that path brings nothing but pain and destruction, hence him always wanting to "be better". And him finally accepting his past is the cherry on top to conclude his arc so far
I was shitting myself until young Kratos disappeared LMAO.
Kratos is confuse and at the same time answering his own questions.
He becomes a philosopher in that moment, still a compromised man, but one who has come to a true understanding. His face and beard profile is presented very much in that way during the second half of the scene.
it is unbelievable how Santa Monica Studios has managed to make what could be argued to be a perfect game, a real masterpiece
Yknow, seeing kratos finally and Completely accept himself for all of his traumas that he had during this 10 year+ journey, it is great
(Also god damn that final tyr boss fight goes nuts)
kratos fighting his older self is basically taking away all of his development from the nordic saga. remember that kratos spent all of gow 2018 being ashamed of his past and is constantly trying to fight it as a way to sow the wounds he left.
Yesss most of the comment in here dont understand this. Its called move on

I know some people wanted a big fight, but I think this is perfect. That's not who he is anymore, and this shows the beginning of his journey and the end of his journey.
so kratos is now the god of hope now?! thats really freaking cool!

Young Kratos looks so menacing

I lived with crazy people that dont let me quit my home, always making me work, couldnt even do school homework, i found myself in kratos who lost everything but still charge at what he believe.

He switches to “I Chose” and chose he did, he accepted that he did those things. The first step to moving forward from mistakes and wrong doings, is admitting that you yourself were that person.

This feels like a Shakespearean monologue. It’s epic, reflective and it perfectly encapsulates the thoughts of the protagonist
Finally, Kratos gets to just chill

Hope you're doing well

Faye really helped this man.
Kratos sitting there. just like how hope is always there waiting for us to discover it again. One day he will move again when needed again.
WAs really hoping to see a debate between Terrence C Carson's Kratos vs Christopher Judge's Kratos. How awesome would that have been?
2:51 This is what I liked about this part, Kratos is constantly ranting at him and rants how much of a horrible & unforgiving person the new God of War title holder is due to the various atrocities he has done and what he did to get his hands dirty for that seat, and that's until he realized that the new God of War isn't a different person or someone taking his form to mock him, it's *him* and now accepts how he isn't that good of a person he was. Then after learning how to approach certain subjects, he now self-reflects about his actions and what of a horrible person he was, he now accepts his new path of becoming the God of Hope.
