    Full Hands On (UNSPONSORED!) Review Here: ua-cam.com/video/-DQjdLu9a18/v-deo.html
    In response to "The Samsung website says 550 Lumens".
    The original listing for the Freestyle said "Brightness: 550 LED Lumens", which can be converted into ANSI lumens by dividing by 2.4, so 550 / 2.4 = 230 ANSI Lumens. Samsung has decided to take away the "LED Lumens" unit in favor of just saying "Lumens". I believe they are doing this to be dishonest/disingenuous, "lumens" by itself could mean LED lumens, light source lumens, or ANSI lumens. To make matters worse the pre-order page now says "Brightness (Nits): 550 Lumens", while Lumens and Nits are not even close to the same thing, so it can't be both.

      Hey, not sure if you know but XGIMI is running a special campaign right now with an extra $100 so you can grab this fantastic projector for $699. For that price point, Samsung looks pretty weak. I also agree that it feels a bit moneygrab from Samsung here, maybe there is something beyond specs that I don't see (ceiling mount?) such as brand recognition or clever marketing?

      It's scumbaggery that these companies try to trick the people that have no clue about the differences. Most other UA-camrs naively repeat the misleading claims and eventually people think that 8,000 lumens is a real thing 😂

    While this is a good spec for spec comparison, I dont think it is the fairest comparison or one that is conclusive. Sure, many projectors have auto keystone, but it's about how well it works. How off axis can the projector go to properly auto adjust, how smart is the colour correction, etc. Would love to see those comparisons before making a conclusion.

    Got all jazzed about it when I first saw it. Preordered immediately and received it this week. Saw your review while I was waiting for it. Almost cancelled due to this review but figured I’d still like to see it.
    Fired it up. The app didn’t recognize the QR code for auto-setup so had to set up manually. Once setup the unit struggled to adjust with keystone and when it did finally square-up it still had background light around the square picture showing the original skewed format. Very distracting. There may have been some way around this but I really didn’t have the patience to find out.
    Airplay crashed three times and the Samsung software interface was painfully slow.
    Picture was ok but auto-focus struggled a bit too.
    Brightness was also just not great.
    Tried running it from two different power banks and it needed more juice to power up. So if I wanted to run remotely without AC I would have had to invest in a better power brick. Can’t believe for the price it didn’t come with its own power pack.
    Disappointed but my expectations were already reset from this video before I received it. Thank you for that. It’s right on par with my short experience with the unit. It’s a shame. The original marketing really made it look cool.
    Had it packed back up within a half-hour and it’s on its way back to Samsung.

    I have to say, I cannot remember the last time I watched a video that told me what NOT to buy. I doubt I'll ever be in the budget projector market as I had wholly moved into the "monitors are brighter and better now that they're bigger" mode until I started watching some of the UST projectors. The Aura has me wondering if I should rethink even though in my application I doubt I'd do 150" or be able to control lighting enough to compete w/ LED TVs that are getting closer to having no bezel at all

    This video is a bit misleading. If you’re looking for the best quality projector for a home theater, sure you want better specs but the freestyle seems to have a combination of all the features at lower specs. The BenQ cannot stream Netflix unless you chrome cast with a laptop and requires a dongle to watch the android TV. The XGiMi and Mars don’t have the same “party tricks” as the freestyle.
    The freestyle seems to have the best ease of use and the most versatile use. Not to mention it automatically color corrects for the background on top of auto correcting for the angle.
    It’s not always about specs. Ease of use and features play a key role. That’s why a large amount of the population pays more for an iPhone at lower specs than an Android.

    It's all about selling a "lifestyle", or rather an aspirational lifestyle. The analogy to Apple iPhone is very apt: these phones are way overpriced, but generate cult like loyalty and excitement due to design, ease of use and lifestyle - it identifies you as "an Apple guy". Not having reviewed the Freestyle yet, I can already tell that Samsung knows how to sell to this market with use case dramatizations that would appeal to the 5% lifestyle crowd (families making over $250K). Unlike the XGIMI or BenQ, Samsung has created a narrative of compelling use cases for attorneys, doctors and UA-camrs to blow on a portable projector for their ski trips or beach home. Think about it: what kind of family would spend silly money (whether $500 or $800, it's silly) on a portable fun projector to carry to their hotel? It's certainly not the family going to Motel 6! I don't disagree with you, just shedding light on the consumer that Samsung is targeting - people who envision themselves having a certain lifestyle. XGIMI did not do a good job selling that lifestyle with their packaging, instead focusing on "performance".

    • @TheHookUp

      There's nothing wrong with spending $800 or $500 on a device like this if they know what they're going into. Also, that 5% example is pretty unrealistic. If they have vacation home, I'm more than certain that those houses are already well equipped. I do agree with points his making in this video, but I really doubt that Samsung is just focusing on life style of that 5%. And more than often, those "dramatization" works way better for median families. Which is why this video exist.

One thing I can credit the Freestyle for is helping me find this video and learning that the 'project onto slanted surfaces' thing isn't brand new, which was definitel hyped up in Samsung's promotion images. I think a lot of projector companies want that to happen, but in order for it to work projectors will need to be sold with ambient light rejecting screens. To be fair BenQ is the only competitor with the ceiling mode that is 720p and not as cheap as others. • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  2 роки тому

      If you want a projector that will perform well even with sunlight you're going to want 2000+ ANSI lumens. The new nebula cosmos laser projectors are probably your best bet, but they are still in pre-order and on kickstarter only, which sucks. Aside from that a traditional bulb projector would be your best bet. I use a BENQ TH671ST which is great for gaming and super bright, but I wouldn't call it "portable".

    • @TheHookUp

      I feel like most of those questions would be answered if you watched my portable projector video, but in short yes, they have those things via AndroidTV (Halo has Android 9, GV30 has Android10), that means chromecast and google assistant built in. Ambient mode is a joke, buy a lightbulb for $20 if that's what you want, no need to leave your $900 projector running to make some colored light, it's not energy efficient, and it degrades the light source.

      The fact that no reviewers mentioned brightness is a red flag. If I had one in hand I could do a standard ANSI lumen test, but for now I just have to go off of what samsung reported which was 550 LED lumens. LED lumens are converted into ANSI lumens by dividing by 2.4, so 550/2.4=230 ANSI Lumens.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  2 роки тому

      The reason I haven't done a full review of the XGIMI Aura is I don't have much to compare it to. I prefer to be able to give an "expert" opinion, and the only three USTs that I've used are the Epson LS300, the original VAVA, and the XGIMI Aura. I will say out of those the XGIMI is the best, I think the VAVA has a slight advantage when it comes to brightness, but the XGIMI had great picture, great color, and in gaming mode the input lag was low enough that I could play Nintendo switch games, which I couldn't do on the LS300 or the VAVA.
      Unfortunately, it was just a preview unit and I had to return it. This year I'm planning a UST showdown video for sub $2500 USTs, I'll buy the Aura for that video.
