@pieter-jandevriendt7789 goes to show you that everyone's tastes are different. Crown of barbedwire is my least favorite song on this album, but I still like it, just nit as much as the others.
If Outlaw Torn and Fixxxer had a baby and it was raised by Tony Iommi. I've been listening to it on a loop all day. Earbuds at the grocery store... I'm walking around with a shopping cart with... What I like to call "Newstead Face" 😜😝
This isn't proggy. It's in 4/4 the whole time, and 123 bpm the whole time, except where it changes to a half-time feel. This would be right at home on _The Black Album,_ though "My Friend of Misery" might have something to say about it.
@MKDumas1981 of course, it's not prog. But for a thrash band like metalica, it has a prog feel to it. And justice for all was the most progressive they ever were.
The album quickly grew on me. Inamorata by far has won me over the most, I can't quite put my finger in it. In all seriousness though, James vocal on this is excellent, and as whole this song is an authentic journey. There's a stripped-down darkness of emotion to this song, and the last solo in the end by James (not Kirk), really caps it off. Very cool way to end the album. The last few seconds you can hear James talking "that was the best one," you can clearly tell he's got a cigar in his mouth while saying that lol. The song is a beautiful composition.
Metallica surprisingly nails the Stoner Metal songs in their discography (or sludgy, doomy, etc). Bleeding me, Outlaw Torn, Fixxxer, Inamorata, have such great flow and have riffs that just suck you into the song for the entire run time. They never feel as long as they are to me, because they just feel perfectly satisfying. They just all have a good sense of groove and progression. Not to mention James leaves it all out on these songs lyrically, and melodically.
It has that stoner Kyuss-Sabbath vibe, with a lot of elements from the 90's, FIxxxer, Outlaw Torn, and of course takes a lot from My Friend of Misery. Sounds like an instrumental with lyrics. Oh and I think the video added to it, to the story and background. Really good video.
My friend of Misery would work better as instrumental like it was intended to be but Inamorata works better this way with this James performances because he elevates the song so much with great singing. awesome build up, emotional middle section and solos. these songs are risky but they nailed it. Its all great again when they work on project as a full band not as a duo. Hardwired was missing that. this album destroys hardwired easily.
The verse riff doesn't move quite enough to stand on its own. As a riff over a static vocal line (the vocal line only has three different notes), but not by itself. This song works as written, although, had I written it, I would eliminated the vocal line over the bass interlude, and asked Rob for a little more movement in the bass interlude. Maybe even overdrive some of it, as a Burton throwback.
Like you, I heard all the hype and after the first listen, I liked it, but wasn't saying it was the best. After about five listens it grew to easily my favorite song. Even my wife (non-Metallica fan) said this song was "Epic!"
Mango, when I first heard this song I was not sure, but rapidly this song has grown on me. And now I believe this will become a Metallica Master piece! 🔥🤘
I think James really reinvented his vocals for this album. Clearly the man can no longer growl on every song, and that's okay. But he tried something different and it works. Great song.
Preserving his voice. I think the sound of vocal & technique is definitely better than all his singing. He could do the growl whenever, but he is being smart.
I liked it when you said something to the effect of, "Looking forward to this song speeding up." I knew it wasn't going to, lol. Glad you still like it. Thanks for sharing!
For me it's in the top 3 on the album. Really dig Crown of Barb Wire and If Darkness had a Son. But really need to go through the whole thing a few times to really nail down specific rankings. I liked that they finally gave us a video in the Pushead art style from the t-shirts.
@@u.s.m.c.fewproudthemarines2987 Yes, good as they can be..but that amount they can be is not much compared to lets say Room of Mirrors, Too Far Gone? You Must Burn! and Inamorata
I just can't get into if darkness had a son, I think it's one of the worst songs they ever put out, inmorata, room of mirrors and chasing lights are my top 3 on the album
Thank you Mr Mango, for the journey through the album. This song has a special place near to Outlaw Torn and other great songs from Load and Reload days... See you next time.
Thanks for pointing out the Load/ReLoad vibes. Been trying to pinpoint what it feel like and that mixed with a little To Live Is To Die is what I feel.

Me around 5th listen - it's good, but everyone says it's the best song on album? Me 3 weeks and a million listens later - it's their best song of the last 10+ years!
Best song on the album, it stands out, actually feels inspired, great solos, more of this! The rest feels like they fed all their previous music into an AI program and it spat out the album!🤘 P.S. I got my cassette the next day! ☺️
Dark and groovy. Heavy enough to invoke Sabbath. Very classic heavy metal sound. Kirk having input is obvious with that descending lick at the end of each verse, over the rhythm chords. Not sure how I feel about Rob's background vocals.
I sped this song up a bit. When on 15%+ when James starts singing it is really cool. On UA-cam you can do 25%+ Try that on when James sings. Gives this song another dimension. But + is to fast though. Around 15+ is perfect

The last 3rd of the song really saves it for me, the rest is good but I don't really feel like its as spectacular as most people are saying it is. It's got a nice catchy chorus and groove that is straight out of Load era but there's far more better songs on this album for me. Even the breakdown is just from Unforgiven 3, but the harmonies definitely elevate the song.
I absolutely agree with you. This song doesn’t sound like Metallica at all. Average song in my opinion. Personally I like shadows follow,72 seasons, too far gone and chase the light

My favorite song from the album. Love it. Overall a successful album in my opinion.
This song is about alcoholism. The empty bottles punishing the man, the desert, the thirst.

I think it's about his wife/recent divorce. Especially when he says she's not what I'm looking for.
