OFF GRID LIVING We Bought Bugs To Kill Bugs A Backwoods Living Vlog Episode 98

  • In this episode, we're infested with aphids in the greenhouse but mama's got the situation under control. Shes ordered 3000 ladybugs and the little buggers are doing their job.
Homesteading off the grid and on the mountain certainly has its challenges but there's no place we'd rather live. We restored the old camp and transformed it into a cozy home for ourselves, then we cleared more land, built a workshop and greenhouse and spent the late part of the winter starting seeds and now we're busy planting our first garden on the mountain. Little by little we're reaching our goals of having a self sufficient homestead.

This man is truly a conservationist who lives from the land. I have personally seen him as a trapper .Who makes a portion of his living from catching beaver. Keep in his yard a family of beaver. Even though they flooded a piece of his property. He gave them a sanctuary just outside his door. He is a conservationist and outdoorsman.

We homeschool and when my son was little he wanted to grow a Maple tree here in Maine. He started it from seed and is now 16 years old. It is in our backyard. He enjoys that Maple to this day and knows that it is there because of him. I love that you are doing that.

Curious as to it's current size as our property in the Appalachian mountains lost some trees to the Sandy storm and would like to see a tree large enough to support swings for the grandkids and great grandkids our lot size and time is limited

Part of a bush that our relatives had brought from Wales (late 1800s), is growing in the back yard. That bush has been divided/moved to many different states, and we were shocked to see many branches of it had died after the -20F temps in Feb. Happy to see several new branches covered with leaves and blossoms!!
A silver maple that had been a twelve-inch, branchless stick when we'd moved to our new house, 40+ years ago, is now a tall, gigantic *monster* tree out back.
There's a Cottonwood tree with an over twenty-foot circumference is in a park by the Mississippi River.
The stories old bushes, plants and trees could tell! 🤣

I have seeds from my mom that are over 45 years old and still viable and growing. I love the fact that I can take something that my mom loved so much and keep them growing in perpetuity. I am nostalgic too and I wouldn’t want to be any other way. 🙂

Two things about this video that I love. First, your lecture on harvesting and replenishing, excellent! Second, how wonderful to have a family history with a plant that you can say you started your life with and that you will probably end your life with. You’re probably one in a hundred million that can say that. Touched my heart that you revere that. You are a special human being!

I really like it the planting new trees and new flowers from old it is amazing to see trees coming out of a stump you can cut a tree down but it still wants to grow and remove carbon monoxide and give us oxygen when you cut down one tree as I can see you can get four five six seven more from the stump that you thought was dead adding oxygen how lovely it is I really like the views over your shoulder on the last part it's fantastic I don't know what the view will be from your new cabin but that one was spectacular keep going and God bless

I love the story of the flowers. When my parents passed away in 2004 I dug up lilies from their yard. I had been raised in the town, 80 miles north of here, not in that home but the town. My mother and dad had moved those flowers to each home we lived in. When my Granny passed away in 1980 in Mississippi I was with my parents when we dug those lilies up at her homestead. They are now growing in my back yard and have been since 2004. I have lived here 30 years. My small little home will go to my daughter, she is 40 now and she was also with me when we dug up the flowers in 1980. She was 6 months old. Blessings my friends

The "roots" idea IS really cool. Before my Dad passed in 2004, I took several different varieties of flowers from his yard. Ferns that were from my Grandma in Iowa where we were all born. Lillies, Rose's, mums etc. I planted them all in a new garden I made and I named it " Grandpas garden". ( my kids and I really enjoy it ). Anyway, I love you both, and what you believe,, and practice, it makes total sense to me .. Some people just dont get that now days. Love the way you politely set them straight !! Lmao.. take care

Looking good Boss and Laurie 😊 Those darn bugs. Happy Place is still looking good. 👍👍 I'll only use white vinegar, little dawn and water for the bugs. Epsom salt in the soil. Been lucky so far. Had to put an old screen tent around one garden to keep the squirrels out. Working so far. Trees are neccessary for many reasons. Thank you for growing more trees. Loved the series and will watch it again. So excited for the new project. In my thoughts and prayers. God Bless y'all and the kids ✌❤😁

I grew up with a fabulous big ole oak in the back yard! Dad made a swing and every sister and brother swung on the swing hanging from a big branch , and then the grandchildren too. And now a new family owns it and swings from it’s boughs.... Life continues, memories are made.💕
When we moved out West my mother dug up some of her 🌷 tulips and daffodil bulbs and brought them out here on a visit and we planted them in my yard, every spring I smile as they pop up and bloom. I feel connected as she is gone now but something she loved so lives on ....at my home.

What a great video ❤️ Here we have slips (roots) from my gr, grandparents home, and the grandparents homes. We have a large Maple tree here which came from a slip off the one we have in our front yard. My son planted that slip years ago and it is huge and provides good shade. Several years ago my husband helped our grandson plant a little spruce seedling and it’s growing nicely in the backyard. We have another Spruce that my children’s grandmother planted out here before she died from Alzheimer’s. Some people really are oblivious. You two are doing a wonderful thing. God Bless 🌲

I know it will be a delight to live in a home with the lumber you harvested from your land. That is very special indeed! Giving back taking only what you need. Growing and nurturing the land with seedlings of white pines and red oaks awesome. Planting your roots. Very thoughtful of your sister to remove some from the original home and growing them again so they may be replanted on your homestead. Everything you do improves the land in which your going to live. It will be a wonderful and healthy place to live.

Another FANtastic video ! That greenhouse is wonderful! FYI I have spent my 67 years with many of those years growing and planting trees in all of the places I have lived. Just this past week my wife and I went back to see a dogwood I planted and later grafted a branch from a pink dogwood to it. That was roughly in 1967. Too my amazement it was still alive and fully grown, about 25 feet high and with a spread of about 28 feet. At my present home I have a Norway spruce and a Douglas fir I planted with my children’s 16th birthday’s,.They are both huge now and look beautiful in the yard. That was about about 1995 and 1999. But then again, I’m strange lol I also raise about 1100 Hemerocallis, Daylilies (Registered Plants) with the AHS. There is nothing like nature! Have a great day! 🐾🐾🐾🐾👍👏😎

Just a reminder to all.....don’t cut trees in the spring and early summer! I volunteer at a wildlife rescue hand feeding baby birds that have been injured or orphaned from having their nests destroyed by tree trimming. Baby birds and baby squirrels are born each spring in those trees, and every year our rescue is overwhelmed with babies that have to be hand reared to survive. Love your videos, Boss! Awesome stuff JC! “Take what you need and give back.” If only those who are so quick to criticize would practice this simple truth! If others would simply attempt to leave their own baggage and preconceived ideas “at the door” and allow your journey be able to speak into their lives. If not, why are they watching or following you anyway?

Bravo to you. Narcissistic people cretasise others because they have no self-esteem or backbone. To do what you have done, takes a lot of backbone and knowledge to be successful. Again, Bravo. If I would needed to survive, I would want someone like you on my side.

I can see that you are an "old soul" type of person. I'm one, too. Thank you for the information and the entertainment. I'm an old "Boy Scout" that looks at things in a different way than most. You are such an inspiration! Thanks for the video.

Around 15 years ago, I had to cut a specific maple tree down. So the stump developed suckers. I left one grow with the intention of cutting it down later for wood. Now it's a decent sized tree.

I love watching your videos. The way you explain things is very comforting. It is neat that you are planting flowers that were part of your youth. Gives you a sense of knowing your parents hands were also responsible for where they are being planted today. I agree with you when it comes to all these experts who criticize you for what you are doing and they don’t have a clue. Maybe they should spend more time with their unicorns and spend less time showing their stupidity. Anyway, thanks again for your videos. Take care.

What a lovely visit BossMan. Many blessings to you and Lori!! It will be fun to watch this new, and last, homestead come to life. I really enjoyed your 'Root's series, and I was tearing up as you talked about those flowers and bringing your family roots to your final home on this earth. Pretty neat. And good to know about those lady bugs!! Have to tell you too, I made a modified version of your stuffed swiss chard leaves...a deconstructed version in a casserole dish. It was delicious!!! Thanks again to you both. Have a great week. Prayers continue for you.

    That's a great story about the Lily's.
I live out in the woods and the pine trees plant new seedlings in the flower pots on the deck.
I've been repotting them and the second year put then into 1 gallon jugs, next year plant them in the yard.
Been doing this for 10-15 years now.
You're not the only one Boss...

I just moved into my last home and brought wild ginger plants that were growing in my last home and the one before. They were originally planted by my husband’s great-grandmother on the property we inherited soon after marrying 48 years ago.

You and your lady are very wise and truly living life the way I wish I could. I know we can’t all do this, but it’s a dream I’ve always had. You are living a very sustainable lifestyle that takes into account the land as well as the wildlife you live with. I try my best to give back to the property I live on as well, by planting trees and adding compost to the soil and attracting and feeding wildlife around me. It’s the desert however so I can only do so much! Kudos to you both. 😊

An enjoyable video as it always is. I liked the way you usd the bugs to combat bugs. Myself and my son have grown two oak trees from acorns and we will be taking them to the local forest when they are ready, they are too young yet. You will always get people that are quick to twist, but not quick to say something good.
We are lucky here in Poland in that we will be able to bushcraft in the forests in designated places to enjoy the nature at its best. I love the way you are bringing nostalgia to your new home. Good luck to you and Mamma and the kids.

Here in Ireland, our government planted a tree for each citizen to welcome the millennium. Each citizen was issued with a certificate identifing their tree. There are a lot of millennium forests around the country. You can visit your own tree which are now 21 years old.
