  • Growing vegetables in the woods can be challenging. Growing them through the winter may be impossible but we're certainly going to try. We've done a lot of experimenting since we built our greenhouse, some we had great success with and others were failures. In this episode, we share what we have learned from our journey.

I have already asked God for a cabin in heaven and a garden and vineyard to tend. Someone else can have a mansion. I was never fond of marble floors. He knows my heart on this. He knows yours too. After a growing season, you still look like a kid in a candy store when you’re in your greenhouse. Of course having green growing plants with snow on the ground would make anyone happy. Lori looked a little like a kid too scarfing tomatoes at Thanksgiving. Glad all that hard work is paying off so well with food and with happiness.

Seed tray forces roots because they hit the boundary wall. Ones in dirt take longer to fill in roots because they will spend time reaching out before greening.

I can answer the seed-starting question for you. The reason they started off faster was the thin cubes of the seed trays can warm up faster thus promoting faster growth. The dirt in the larger tray stays cooler which inhibits growth. I have worked with plants for 40 years and I do a lot of education for folks at the plant industry where I work. You don't have to dig up old tomato plants in order to keep them. Just break off some of the laterals leave them about eight inches long and cut the lower leaves off and just stick them in pots of dirt. It takes about six days and they will be rooted! That way you have a fresh new plant with the tender green off the end of the plant instead of the old base plant. You can get many new starts of tomatoes like this.

So we got 6 inches from that same storm here in Goffstown, NH. I noticed you grow no strawberries so a trick I saw my mom do in her greenhouse with great success was she found a 6 foot section of gutter at the dump. My father screwed it to the wall and she started strawberries in it and they took off hanging down not taking up much room in the greenhouse. Just a FYI!! Happy Holidays!!

I know what you mean about the green in the middle of winter. A friend keeps a large amount of plants indoors during winter. Her long dead husband had converted a southern facing room into a solarium. It was like walking into a jungle during winter and always uplifted the spirit. A bunch of us would go over on Sat morning and spend the day with her in the jungle. Maybe adding a layer of clear plastic on the inside of your studs would help create a dead air space and help raise the temp higher.

Great advice on the seed trays, and you're 100% right on starting them in the trays yields faster growing plants. I've seen this first hand as well. I don't know all the science behind it, but has something to do with the root structure growing downward instead of outward, which is more efficient for the plant. Great video as always!

Okay last comment....😁 the larger the seed the larger the seed tray needed to plant it in. The smaller the cells on the seed trays, the smaller the seed that goes in it. Seed tray sizes are based on the size of the roots that the product growing will produce. Vegetables that are large rooted will not last but a week or two in a small seed tray and will die before time to transplant it. There will not be enough dirt to hold the water to make it grow. I would definitely think twice before planting bulbous seeds in the seed cells. The problem is, take for instance, beets. Once beets germinate they throw down a very long Tap Root to Anchor the plant to begin the bulb of the Beet or even for radishes. By that time the Taproot has circled the seed Tray cell and has practically ruined it for planting out. I know this from personal experience as I have had it happen to me. I typically will direct seed beets and radishes and turnips. Hope this helps. Here's a free tip for you..... Put a tablespoon or two of bloodmeal about once a month on your pansies. You're welcome!!

I'm certain that the hydroponic aspect of the floating tray is the reason why those seeds did better than the soil sown seeds. The styrofoam may help to insulate, too. You want to experiment? Start looking into hydroponics.

Just a suggestion.... you may want to do some research on hand pollinating. Doubtful any bees or wind will be visiting the greenhouse any time soon ; ) I did some hand pollinating with corn because I had so few stalks & wanted to make sure the male & female plants got the necessary fertility (?) LOL not sure what to call it. haha At any rate, I got quite a few ears of corn from only about seven stalks, so I think that little experiment went pretty well. I got the info on YT. I love the greenhouse; wish it was parked in my back yard. I'll just have to resort to daydreams again until spring. Blessings @--->----

Greetings from PEI Boss. I know your power options are somewhat limited. Myself I use a heat matt, which speeds up germination. I have multiple trays depending on when stuff goes out. I have what is called 'Root Trainer's which have grooves down the sides and train the roots not to spiral or clump. Tomatoes and peppers are started in larger trays. My onions are started in tree plug starters, they are hard plastic and quite deep. I start my onions around Feb 5th for transplant mid to late April. The baker creek web site is selling out of many seeds quickly and was not able to get the onions I wanted. Wethersfield Reds are one of my favourites for salads. Once we hit the 10+hr daylight mark you should see some more plant growth. At ten hours nothing grows, but it's great for harvesting, and you are certainly doing that. My experiment this winter is lacto-fermenting garlic. I had 200 bulbs this year and after freezing some, I decided to put some down this way. Sun set at 4:26 here these days and it makes for a short amount of daylight. All the best

Hi Boss, Back when you first showed us your Greenhouse I told you that it looked like Heaven to me, and it still does. There is just something about growing your own and taking care of them every step of the way that makes it taste better as well as restores all those weary dreary feelings back to refreshed and at peace. Just a huge mood booster. I miss mine so, so much!
I'm not sure if there's a difference between Floating seed trays and Seed trays, but I've used trays for years. A friend convinced me to use and make my own seed blocks instead of a tray. They worked just as well or better, Plus no damage pushing the plant out of the tray. You might want to try them.
When my Indeterminate growth Tomatoes become leggy and start flopping over, I cover the vine with dirt where its touching. Like Pumpkins and many others, the tomatoes will grow new roots to help feed that far end. Just like yours I've had the main root die while this newly rooted section continues to produce fruit as if it was a new plant.
The only time I got better results with direct planting over trays, were plants whose main tap root is vital and cant be damaged in any way. Carrots are a good example. Corn and Sunflowers are more as they rely on the strong tap room allowing them to grow tall.
I am eagerly awaiting all the goodies and surprises the Greenhouse experiments will bring! Oh, when are you planning on getting chickens?

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  3 роки тому +1

I'll be doing a followup very soon regarding the seed trays and the chickens but yes, these trays float in a waterbed and they produce amazing roots systems.

He said it works amazing. I live in Texas it doesn’t get cold enough to worry about feet being chilly. But if you try the bubble wrap please let me know how it works out.And that is another awesome way to use bubble wrap or bubble foil, or reflect dicks whatever you wanna call it. Check the root mass in your experiment of the radishes. Root mass in your foam trays should be bigger with more shorter roots. Thus more roots better chance of faster growth when transplanted. On the other hand the seeds growing in a container with more soil will grow onger but there will be less roots thus less chance of growth of the plants. My two cents on the subject.

Well it is the time if year to stay busy, but one does not have to work quite as hard. One can try and make plans for the coming year and perhaps do a little reading ir inside hobbies if one has them. I loved the intro on yiur last vlog with the squirrel and the bag of seed and if coarse the bubble wrap. It reminded me so much of my husband I had to show it to him! He is always taking care of the birds and squirrels and of coarse our resident kitty
and our Husky Bella Rose. I kid him about taking care of all the critters except himself. It has been a different year fir sure, but we are headed into the Christmas season and maybe the colored lights and decorations will help lift peoples spirits. Lets not forget the reason for the season! My best to you and yours for a blessed Christmas and to our precious puppies Frankie and Tildy. Don't forget to get the little ones something special in their stocking! 🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊👍👍👍👍👍

Your question at 19:10. It's always been my experience that when the root growth is restricted the plant growth thrives...and vice versa, when the plant growth is restricted or plants are pruned, the root growth thrives.

Greets from Hamburg in Germany! The "seed-starter home" If the seeds had the same place for growing- the same sun the same cold then it has an simple answere why the seed in the smaller homes growed better: 1: The temperaturs in the sourounding is better the isolation through the styro helps 2: The water is better keept in the smal boxes. The funnel is like a tunnel that make the water run slower. The "cold feet thing" My first mentor was a cancer doctor a famous one in the early 90th. He was like a father for me- my father was an alcoholic and a bad men. This men helped me to overcome some soul problems and I learned some basics about cancer. 80% of his patients where "death candidats" we viseted them and hold many hands or the sick person until they toke the last breaht. Some lived for years other more then 10 years! Not everyone had family. One importend in your situation is to ceep the feed warm and dry. The feeds are in connection with some organs like the kidneys- and others and if you have to long cold feeds you weaken your iumun-system and can create special infection that are not good in your situation. My hunter tipp: If you have to run through your swamp with wet grounds morass- use the waterprove NEOPREN boots and even if the weight is 2 KG or kilo have 2 real warm hunterboots "or long time sitting in the high places" with you and change then the boots. Go on Jagd-Schuhe de (De for germany take a look at the handmade traditionell boots. Lether, goere tex, Sheep wool inside water proofe some with electro heater. They can cost between 500 US$ or 600 US$. I will make contact with the 3 companys that have such warm hunter boots (for long sitting and walking times when hunting) and will ask them if they are willing to support you with such nice live changing ääää hunter changing boots. 1: Haix is a global player mil. hunter police special winter boots worldwide tale a look 2: MEINDL KIRUNA GTX WINTERSTIEFEL they are also in the US. Handmade. 3: A CA boot produktion: BAFFIN HERREN STIEFEL CONTROL MAX they have high end hunter boots for real cold times. I will call them in 2 hours from Germany. And please give me information what kind of size- if you need some extra space some wide boots (I wear only extra wide because my feed became wider in the last 50 years through my weight) So to prevent more pressure of your body- check out the "2kind of boot" thing also good are the real wool insoles out of real cheep wool. You will not sweat in them they ceep the feed dry IF you have enogh space in the boots. As more air is in a boot as better the isolation is but with NEOPREN its not function. NEOPREN will not breath and then you sweat in them. Love from Hamburg

I put a HotHands hand warmer in my shoes. Once you walk a couple hundred yards they co form to my feet and keep them nice and toasty warm. Sometimes too warm. Just put something (a sock) between your feet and the warmer.

I had a mate who was a semi professional grower and he always advocated that you always should transplant your seedlings, but leave them laying in the sun before replanting as they go into survival mode and hardly ever look back, also if your talk nicely to your plants and tell them how beautiful they are, as silly as it sounds really works..

P.S. I love my Muck Boots. While they aren’t as pretty as the boots some of the other ladies wear, they are comfy and practical for me. haven’t had a problem with the cold feet. I wear Merino Wool socks on the colder days. Happy Holidays to you two and the pups 🎄

Nice to see your doing so well Boss & hope you read my comment. I think I mentioned to you before but anyway. I grew this year 79 celery & 51 tomatoes in 4 eight inch pots in two sunny south windows 15 inches wide. My best year planting like that was 1100 lbs of tomatoes in Alberta. Everything else we direct sow as we found they do best from seed but we sow very thickly. Peas as example we toss maybe 10 to 15 in a 1 foot area all the way down the rows. Also the grey on tomatoes is powdery mildew. Get rid of every sign & clean with hydrogen peroxide or baking soda.

From experience: Because of the short day length, the plants will grow very slow if at all. So if you have full grown plants in the beds by November, they will survive through the winter for fresh picking. However sprouts will grow pretty good and are more nutritious. See UA-cam videos on sprout growing.

You might try a couple food seeds for entertainment in your greenhouse, I’m growing Mexican peppers from dry ones from the grocery spice rack. Also growing onions and celery tops, beet greens, chicory and the like, can come back for quite a while. Nasturtiums might do ok in there and are edible, leaves + flowers. Spinach does well for people in winter.

On your tomatoes, you can take cuttings, and plant them, stick the cutting in water, change water every few days. After roots form plant in pot. You've now cloned your tomatoes
