The actor playing the General (who you asked about near the beginning) is Rupert Vansittart. He's a British character actor who has' been in many productions; the biggest being in Game of Thrones playing Lord John Royce. He was also in Braveheart, Remains of the Day, Bridgerton, Andor and many more. I love Penelope Wilton's character, Harriet Jones and how she's always flashing her ID and identifying herself as "MP Flydale North" (a fictional constituency). A 'backbencher' is a member of Parliament who isn't in cabinet and doesn't rank very highly within their party. They literally sit on the back benches in Parliament. The cabinet ministers (or shadow cabinet) sit close to the prime minister (or the leader of the opposition) so they can answer questions posed by the opposition during Question Period. No one usually directs questions to backbenchers & they aren't usually picked to ask or answer questions. (When a party "caucuses- - meet privately they usually plan out who will ask questions/answer questions.) We use the same term "backbencher" here in Canada for our less important MPs. However, our MPs actually have desks, in the UK, they literally sit on benches without desks in a fairly crowded room.)
Can I just say how every whovian I've come across has been so awesome? Y'all have been so helpful explaining terms and helping me on this journey. Harriet Jones seriously captured my heart.
1:54 I think this part is so funny because Russell T Davies (the showrunner from 2005-10) had gay people mad at him for this line and also homophobic people mad at him for having openly gay characters showing affection in the show, he was just pissing everybody off 💀
8:06 A backbencher is basically a "rank and file" member of Parliament, they sit at the back benches of the House of Commons and they're just everyone who doesn't have an office or ministry in government or a spokesperson seat in the opposition party
I stop watching those around episode 7 or 8. I can't remember. I actually have everything filmed up to 2x3. It's just a matter of getting those edited. All the full length unedited reactions are on my patreon.
Oh my goodness the editing style for this episode is on point! High hopes for the rest of them.
I'll send your compliments to the editor. He does an awesome job. I cackled at this and episode 5.
They are having a party at Jackie's at the beginning of the episode. But it's not due to the aliens, it's to celebrate Rose coming back home.
Ahhh!!! Now that makes sense. I didn't catch on to that.

I'm just not looking forward to Russell T Davies breaking my heart at some pace throughout his run.
