    My Ukrainian name is Євгенія but my family calls me Геня (Genya) for short. In English, it is equivalent to 'Eugenia'. But my favourite Ukrainian name is Зоряна (Zorianna)... the zori are night spirits from Slavic myth- they are two sisters who help the dark God, Chernobog, cross the sky... and my grandmother used to read to us from a Ukrainian fairy tale book.

    • @taras3702
      @taras3702 5 місяців тому

      Were the Zori benevolent or evil? As I recall, some spirits that roamed the night were guardians of humans, while others were quite the opposite such as Rusalkas. They were vengeful or angry ghosts.

    Olena is a very popular Ukrainian name. I really like the old Ukrainian female name Oriana (meaning "to plow" because, as you know, Ukrainians were famous farmers) and the male name Oles (meaning "defender")

    Fascinating to see the deep cultural connection remaining from the Greeks. Not surprising considering Ukraine was a breadbasket all the way back to Ancient Greek times before Christ - Olbia, the Greek trading city in Scythian times is nearby to Kherson your hometown (Ever visited the ruins?). Also to see the names connected to Jewish heritage.
    Would be interested to know of names that have Cuman, Tatar, and Turkic origin.

    • @greatsarmatae
      @greatsarmatae 7 місяців тому

      There are no Turkic names in traditions of Ukraine. There was no such joint existence between Nomads and Rusins to get affected that much.

    • @KG-1

      @@greatsarmatae wrong. All wrong. The left bank of the Dnipro and the connection to Crimea and the Ottoman Empire rebut that comment utterly. Listen to Brigade song for the UA 30th Mech brigade. Point is all kinds of Ukrainian connection to Turkic and other steppe horse peoples in their history. See also the troop id necessary for Polish -- Ukrainian troops needed at Vienna in 1683.

      @@KG-1 mate, you didn't get what I meant. Nothing is wrong here.
      I told you about names and joint life (like in mixed societies) which are not there, not about history of tight geographical contacts and it's specifics like lending of weaponry, garments and some vocabulary.
      Besides, lands of Crimean Khanate weren't Ukrainian, it is so now, but historically they weren't.

    The word resurrection refers to Jesus being raised from the dead. The definition of the word resurrection is the action or fact of resurrecting or being resurrected. The word resurrect is to restore (a dead person) to life.

    - Thank you a lot for the (beautiful) meaning of Anastasiya, my best Ukrainian friend is named like that. She stayed in the country, I pray for her everyday.
    - There's a famous Inna in my country for about a decade, Inna Shevchenko, radical feminist militant, but I didn't like her much before the large scale invasion because her girls desecrated a church in my city. I have softened since, especially with all the ignorant/malevolent anti-Ukraine crowd attacking her and your people.
    - I was hoping you would talk about the name Bohdan, I find it pretty badass.

    I am a Ukrainian-American whose first name is Taras, and indeed I live up to its meaning. I consider it a genuine privilege to bear the name of Ukraine's poet, artist and nationalist, Taras Shevchenko. He rebelled against injustice, and not just on behalf of Ukrainians. He was in many ways very much like America's Patrick Henry.

    Hi! I live in New Orleans, Louisiana (USA) and my girlfriend is from Ukraine, and her name is “Svitlana”. I googled it, and this name means “light”, or “pure”, which is perfect for her. I also understand that it is the Ukrainian analogue to the Russian name “Svetlana” (same meaning). What is the nickname for Svitlana? I know the Russian nickname for Svetlana is “Sveta”, does that mean the Ukrainian nickname for Svitlana is “Svita”? She just goes by Lana since she’s lived here so long, and likes the American sounding name… but I love the name “Svitlana” very much and would love to be able to address her by the appropriate nickname.
    Дуже дякую! Cheers from New Orleans! 🥃

    I'm pretty sure Μαρία is pronunced very similarly to how it is in Ukrainian except there is no я. So, written in Cyrillic it would be Маріа. There are a lot of Cyrillic letters that come from the Greek alphabet. А, Д, Е, Г, І, К, Л, М, О, П, Р, У, Т, Х, and Ф are Αα, Δδ, Εε, Γγ, Ιι, Κκ, Λλ, Μμ, Οο, Ππ, Ρρ, Υυ, Ττ, Χχ, and Φφ in Greek with very little phonetic dіfference. Greek Γγ (Ґамма) is more like Ґ than Г, Ρρ (Ро) is not rolled and Ιι can be pronounced like І or И/Й (дівчина; Greek name for Ιι is Йота); these are the only phonetic differences.
    The Ukrainian names with Слав in them can be found in other Slavic cultures, although the meanings will be a little different since the languages themselves are different from one another.
    My name is Hebrew (ליעם) but is pronounced the same as it is in Ukrainian (Ліам). It means "I have a nation/people" in Hebrew.

    I have a funny one for myself, Dana. Sounds like Donna in English but spelled like day-na to English speakers. Sometimes short for Bohdana, feminine version of Bohdan meaning "given by God" in Slavic.
