Mark Farner just has to be the coolest guitar player on the planet. The way he feels the music and the way he lets it all hang out is just a joy to watch. Thanks for posting this GREAT live version!
Totally agree! And the way the rest of the band screwed him over is criminal in my opinion. Saw him several times as a solo artist and will always love his GFR songs. Thank you Mark!
Epic vault video. This band was what every three piece band wanted to be. Two of my very close friends became members of Mark Farner’s band after the breakup. I cannot share the stories but I will say, Mark was truly taken advantage of. Pray for Don and Mel and then maybe, a reunion, but the candle burns shorter with each passing hour. I love Grand Funk Railroad
I grew up near FLint Mochigan and discovered one thing about being in a grand funk concert. You never went to a GFR concert, you were in it. Your seat would vibrate to the back of the auditorium and your hair was straight back for a month after the experience. This kids, was MUSIC
Nothing like the night saw them at the old Olympia Where the Red Wings played in the bowels of Detroit. With my sister and friends refused to watch from nosebleeds, got to the front of the stage was getting squeezed up front pulled out by some roadies ,got to watch rest of the show from the stage. Doesn’t get more memorable than that. Only way it could have been better was if I had a camera. My friends said they saw me through their binoculars and couldn’t believe it.😅Rock on ! Seventies rocked.❤
Grew up on GFR while in high school in the early ‘70’s. Their live album was epic; still play it along with their other albums. Fortunate to see them in concert in ‘73 at university of Cincinnati.
I alway loved the sound of the Wah, Wah pedal Mark used in this song and the facial expressions shared by him and Mel!! Love the part when Mark engages the distortion switch on his "Messenger"@ 3:32! Yeah, time to crank up the volume on the custom made "WEST"amps@6:00!! Farner owns the stage at this point and flies into a frenzy....what a great distorted guitar solo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And watch Schacher's crazy looks he gets on his face as he slams riff after riff! And Brewer's tiny drum set that he totally smashes & thrashes. Such and awesome band! Nobody could touch them at the time!
Don’t be a critic, just sit back and watch a live performance of a band that sold millions of albums, and dominated concert stages throughout the 1970’s.

Wow, what a story! I've heard similar over the years. I had a friend that Mark invited to ride his motorcycle with him up north. He was very cool to my friend who like 12 at the time. Very cool guy.
I played bass guitar to this band's music when I was 10 years old and went on to play my first school concert on guitar and vocals to this band with success.
Grand funk railroad was between the years 1969-1976 the best live act, I never saw them live, only saw the live shows that everyone can see on you tube, like that one that I see right now and let me tell you something, I saw in my life more than 500 shows, most off them of rock and metal acts but nothing even come close to the live shows of grand funk, this is the main reason why the people loved them, they sold two shows at the shea stadium faster than the beatles sold only one show there in the peak of the beatlemania, grand funk did it in 1971, they were a new band that was active at that time only two years, everyone knows that, it's a well known fact in history
Wouldn't know this band if it wasn't for my Dad. He taught me how to play the cool part on guitar but he always nailed it way better of course. Rest in Power, Dad.

This is one of my favorite Grand Funk tunes. Love the hell out of this one. I've been listening to them since 1971 when I was 10. Most excellent band! 😎👍
Had the pleasure of meeting them backstage at The Fillmore East in the summer of 1970 (I was not quite 18...) as the winner of a radio call-in contest! They were super cool and I got to stare at THE MESSENGER, as well as my heroes!!!
Listen to the fill on drums before the vocals come in on the verses. That sound on the Messenger guitar also - GREAT. And Mel, what more can be said? They were amazing. GREAT sound from all three - an American band indeed!!!
I was in the kitchen listening and watching this vid on my living room's widescreen TV and when I heard that drum fill you referenced I walked from the kitchen back into the living room to rewind it and hear it again. Jaw dropping drum fill it is. I don't think Don Brewer used a double bassdrum pedal either like so many drummers would have to normally do to play that fill. 1:55
Those of us who were there in those days know..Grand Funk Railroad was a live performance phenomenon and the biggest concert band on Earth..when I was a teen punk guitar student, Mark Farner was my idol and hero. My first garage band played whole albums worth of GFRR in our sets.
AMAZING!!! Farner had one of the best heavy rock guitar tones of the early 70s... and the heavy metal freakout towards the end of the song is so ahead of its time, you would think it's Megadeth or Judas Priest.
In 1969 the Grand Funk Live was one of the biggest musical phenoms in the black community. Take my word for it. This was mind bending stuff back then. I played my GFR albums so much the vinyl would turn grey. They should be in the rock-n-roll hall of fame. Farner, Schacter and Brewer are monster musicians.

ah hell I'm back again. folks if you have any clue what TRUE rock-n-roll is. this is it. 1 guitarist, 1 base and a drummer making this sort of sound. Suppose I was just drugged back then but I'm damn near 60 now and I scream to the accomplishments of these guys. "F' it you had to have lived it to appreciate it. One of their songs from this time is going to get played at my passing ceremony, if I actually have one.
This is my favorite version of 'Into The Sun'. Such energy these guys displayed! With bands such as GFR and Led Zeppelin I still cannot understand why there aren't any more bands like them in these times.
***** Artists these days, wait, calling them artists is a insult to real artists. More like money making puppets that fit a Hollywood fake plastic look, with dumb'ed down music and lyrics for a lacking attention span audience.
Víctor Alcántar they are but no one will sign them because not in now it all shit music now and I wish this plus 80s metal could just stayed not the shit they play now I may be 24 but I know what real music is unlike people my age or younger think what is music
Still A LOT of bands like this around. You just have to know where to look cause the record companies don't promote the good stuff! Checkout Samsara Blues Experiment, All Them Witches, Earthless, or Colour Haze! All popular in what is called the psych/stoner scene but with roots in 70's blues based rock. Earthless will melt you face...little to no singing but tons of riffs that go on forever! If you checkout All Them Witches find the live show from the KEXP radii studio and you won't be disappointed! Interested to hear what you think!
This was my very first concert that I ever attended. Pirate's World was a little amusement park in Dania and you paid like $5 and went on the rides all day and then stayed for the concert. I believe they opened for Three Dog Night and Earth, Wind and Fire. Still to this day the BEST concert that I have ever seen!! There was an incident between the cops and some of the crowd and some were arrested. I also saw Led Zepelin The Grateful Dead and a bunch of other great bands there. Wish it never closed! Thank you so much for posting this, it brings back some awesome memories!!
Yeah I went to that concert up RX world too cuz I've lived in Dania on 6th Street and then I remember all the other concerts member Ted Nugent and the Amboy dukes
Just want to let you know I'm in Davie now but not the pirates roll down the other consulate so we have besides the sportatorium and will not shut down the how to make Gulfstream racetrack ice in quite a few concerts in those are all free
Thanks John for bringing this awesome video to light. It never fails to fascinate me just how incredible Mark, Don and Mel were.... just all these 30+ years later.
@@barrysmith8920 Met them when they played the old Orlando Sports Stadium in Orlando out by FTU where I was attending university there (now UCF) on West Colonial Drive in 1969 or 1970. They picked us up hitch hiking to their show; great memories. GFR played Phillies several times here in West Palm Beach in the 90's and we stood outside the club talking to Mark for several hours after the show. Always just a super nice, chill dude.
@@kathycandia2203 Great times! Yeah Farner was my hero then. You have very nice intimate memories. GRF were an incredible band, my fave then by far. Until Brewer took over with that sappy bubble gum “We’re An American Band”. But they needed a huge hit as Knight took all their money basically. Saw them in Tucson 1971!! Freddy King opened. I was right up front, everyone standing in their seats entire show.
Heavy! First concert I went to at age 14 begging my older brother to include me with his friends was Grand Funk Railroad in 1974. Billy Preston opened and I had the experience of sneaking my first toke from a passing joint. Oh yeah, Closer to Home.
I saw GFR around the same time and year in San Francisco at Bill Graham's famous Winterland. Opening band was Bloodrock. I was 20 ft. from the stage and...what a performance! Very loud, too!
tigerclaw1955 Really? Was Black Sabbath a new and unknown band then? Bloodrock was limited to 2 or 3 tunes that were OK, but Black Sabbath took off quickly with their 1st album. I also saw Black Sabbath at Winterland two times, but, they were the headliner band each time. Remember Bloodrock's tune...DOA?
actually my memory is apparently a little disjointed on this subject. Archives show that Sabbath played with Yes and Wild Turkey on that date, Gentle Giant later the same year. I actually can find no reference yet to Blood Rock's concert date in San Diego. I definitely know I saw Sabbath, because I was a little freaked out about their name choice. Regardless, I was an immediate and steadfast fan.
tigerclaw1955 Understood, man...it was a long time ago...43 years ago. I still have the ticket stub for the GFR/Bloodrock show at Winterland...$3.50 + .35 service charge! A far cry from what is charged nowadays!
I went to Winterland for Jefferson Starship and could it have been. .Kansas opening?? sometime around 1975 or 76. I saw both there but was short on cash so I think it was Kansas opening for the Starship. Pretty cool.. JS had day glo stage props and black lights. I remember (or was it the Owsley?).some kind of giant candy cane lanes also. Papa John was awesome.. Grace too.. she was still pretty hot in those days. I saw Mark Farner in Ventura around 1993 or 94 I think.
Grand Funk has to be one of the most hot. Fired up inspirational bands I've ever seen. I've always yelled right with them and their energy.when I played the drums. I'm. Not schooled on all their names but I believe that Mark. F arner. Is my kind of person .100%..
THIS is the yield of hunger + drive + talent. This band was earning $300 a week at the time of this recording. While their manager was pocketing about $25K a week. Their clothes are old or found, they are skinny, and could not even afford haircuts. Yes they look grunge (when that meant starving musician). And they had the drive. Sharing a can of soup or SPAM was all they often had. If you ever get to meet one of them, look at them directly in their eyes and you will see it. You will see what made this and their other hits.
Isabella Lamond. Sadly, you'll never see anything like this anymore. Young modern artists don't know how to play with soul, fire and passion like this.
Mel and Don need to get over their feelings and get this Band back on the Road! There are too many wannabe rock bands that SUCK!!! GRAND FUNK would Blow their Ass’s Away!!! ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME!!! Time to Honor A REAL BAND!!!
They couldn't play most of their best songs because of all the legal reasons between them and their manager at the time. Which is the biggest reason they broke up!😟
Old manager T knight soured GF’s relationship with most music critics that could not be corrected even after he left. Even as successful as they were, This is why GF was never voted into the RR HOF.
I had seen Grand Funk Railroad in the early days, culminating at Madison Square Garden. I had seen Alvin Lee, Hendrix, Jorma of the Jefferson Airplane..... GREAT Guitarists!!! I knew Mark Farner couldn't compete with them, but boy, his SOUND created such ENERGY, that it was Addicting. Wow, what Concerts they put on. I will :ALWAYS be a Grand Funk Railroad FAN!!!!!
Edward Manginelli That's the thing. Mark was not the best guitarist on the planet. Their songs weren't exactly the greatest. (Neither had to be.) But, what they did, they did with such precision and energy--NOBODY did what they did any better the 'Funk did what they did. They were electrifying live. You have to take it in context of the era, too. First time I saw them was in Detroit around '69-'70 I guess. There were four or five acts in the lineup. 'Zep was supposed to be the headliner. I had heard 'Time Machine' on the radio, so I thought I had an idea of what to expect. Man, I had NO idea. GFR had the place on fire. Honestly, nobody would have cared if they never stopped. I can still remember the announcement after the sound went dead: "Due to a contractual agreement with Led Zeppelin, the show has to be stopped." (OK, or something to that effect.) Mark threw up his hands and walked off. Mixed emotions. Yes, we wanted to see Led Zeppelin, but we did not want Grand Funk to stop. Funkus Interruptus. Zeppelin was amazing. So was Grand Funk. Cool video. Sure brings back memories.
You're one lucky sob. I'd give my left breast to see Funk and Zeppelin. I was definitely born in the wrong era. You just don't get better than these band's.
Those amps have a very unique sound. Loud & clean with a really sweet crunch tone. Bigass 15" speakers. When Mark engaged the octave fuzz switch on his Messenger it was pure chaos. Power Trio unlike any other
This band was my first ever live concert in the old Boston gardens back in 70. I was 16 at the time and was totally blown away. GFR was the band that changed my attitude about rock music and where it could go. Now all these years later I still go and see the bands, that are still with us, in much smaller venues with much better sound quality but unfortunately this band is not the original anymore. There is actually 2 versions, one with Mark and another with Mel and Don. I would love to see these guys get back together and do a tour while they are still with us.
Man,I can't believe this, I was just looking around at stuff and saw where this vid was filmed. I saw them there and Deep Purple a few weeks later there again. I can't swear it's the same show as the one on this tape ,but it's definitely the same place, and around the same time. Me and my best friend hitchhiked there from Houston all based on a letter from a pen pal . Great times!
JohninFunk I remember it being kind of cool, so it was probably the first one. Though, I did see GF with Bloodrock, but that was here in Houston. Bloodrock was a Dallas band and they played Houston a lot.
Bloodrock, ...wow, that's a 1 hit wonder band if there ever was one. Did they do D.O.A. in concert? Kind of a downer song, but a good warning about dinking & driving!
Love how guitar cord coming straight outta Mel's bass head right into his bass , no sound effects needed here crank it up and play ur ass off !!! Love it 😎
The Hall Of Shame is a joke. Madonna is in (is she rock ? No. How could that happen ??!) , but not Grand Funk. Tells you all you need to know. Took Rush forever to get in.....
@@onthe1481 LL COOL J ??!! What a joke ! Wow. See, that's the problem right there. That dude has absolutely NOTHING on Grand Funk and never will. The Hall Of Shame strikes again ! Judas Priest isn't there as well and they're still selling out everywhere after all these years.....
I was at this show at Pirates World. THE best concert I ever saw there, and DEFINATELY THE LOUDEST! It took a week to regain 75% of my hearing and am still looking for the other 25%, and the Tinnitus (ringing in my ears) is relentless. BUT knowing what the consequences are would I go again...HELLYEAH!!!! IN A HEARTBEAT!
I was at the show at Pirate's World. Apparently there was a riot outside when they ran out of tickets. Those of us inside had no idea until the show was over. Bloodrock opened for them. Unforgettable concert. Saw them about a year earlier and twice more in the coming years. Awesome rock performances.
On there double live album into the sun is a whole side of one of the records ,but hands down my favorite is inside looking out, farner kicks it on that song, live or studio recording, the studio recording ,anyone who was there must have had there mouths to the floor
Grand Funk Railroad kick some fucking ass back then move to Florida 1979 Coral Springs . Pirate's World was all over but they had Race-O-Rama for many years now everything is all closed 2016 thanks for the blast from the past
@@andrewthompson7707 Because I am black some would be led to believe that I would not "hear" or "feel" this kind of music. Oh but how wrong they are.
*****
Artists these days, wait, calling them artists is a insult to real artists. More like money making puppets that fit a Hollywood fake plastic look, with dumb'ed down music and lyrics for a lacking attention span audience.
RoyalWulffDry I couldn't have said it any better u hit the right on the head.....how sad what music has become
RoyalWulffDry Exactly....
I'm your Croatian fan from 1972 and I wish you good healt and the best wishes in the life future.
How's that Pirate's World for the concert too I was one of the best concerts at Pirates world ever I will never forget it

The most under rated band of the sixties/seventies, such energy!!! 🙂
Grand Funk Railroad was, simply put, one of the greatest Rock bands of all time. They deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame BIG TIME.
Roll Hall of Fame sucks, they decline many bands that have a right to be there,i believe that was exactly your point...sorry😂
I LOVED them as a 14 yr. Old in the 70's and now I know why!
The RRHF doesn't deserve them
Even LZ make them stop playing, Poor Page and Plant.
@@edwardpegolo2133i couldn’t agree more. f the rrhof
These guys knew how to get the job done, the critics were jealous punks, lucky these guys keep on and rocked their true fans to the bitter end!
Oh Hell Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!! I was there!!!!!! My first concert ever with Bloodrock opening for them. My ears are still ringing to this very day.......
Bloodrock. There was another great unheralded rock band. Saw them in 1971 when I was in grade eight. Grand Funk Railroad were the best for me though.
Me too!
Mark Farner was a true pioneer of prog rock. Long live the king!!!
Prog Rock?
C'mon
What?
Grand funk surviver is the Album that I heard long time ago..
He was not but the band was hotter than hot
Thanks John for bringing this awesome video to light. It never fails to fascinate me just how incredible Mark, Don and Mel were.... just all these 30+ years later.
Mynameispaulriefer.
Their live album recorded in 1970 was best live album in Rock history. 👍😁
Still is...
I got mine then, wore out TWO copies before college
The greatest band ever. Each individual was unique in contribution to their combined sound. Each had a distinctive role to play
It’s unbelievable I get the chills!
Great song by Grand Funk! I had forgotten how good this is. Thumb Up!
Very loud, too!
sunking2001 haha I saw Black Sabbath open FOR Bloodrock in around 1972 at the San Diego Sport Arena!
tigerclaw1955 Really?
Omg I loved this will never be another band like them
THIS is the yield of hunger + drive + talent.
I don't even know what to say anymore? The Best!
Majestic playing here by an awesome and best band I love. Into The Sun. 1970.
This is magical and rocks big time, yeah!
Isabella Lamond. Sadly, you'll never see anything like this anymore. Young modern artists don't know how to play with soul, fire and passion like this.
Geo B Legends!
I've been turning my 25yr old daughter onto GFR,n like her father she loves them! She says dad, i think u have great taste in music😄✌
I definitely agree with you 💯
Don was working for Barkin' Bob last I knew. But Seger =is= retired now, so...
Manuel G Chapa
They couldn't play most of their best songs because of all the legal reasons between them and their manager at the time. Which is the biggest reason they broke up!😟
To late, they are a bit to old by now.
I'm astonished to hear critics didn't like these amazing musicians. Critics....worthless.
They didn't like led Zeppelin either....critics are so dumb...
So TRUE
Old manager T knight soured GF’s relationship with most music critics that could not be corrected even after he left. Even as successful as they were, This is why GF was never voted into the RR HOF.
Critics have had some pretty stupid opinions over the years.
Don & Mel are such a solid backbone for Mark to shine...gawd they're tight!
It's rock perfection! They were born to rock together
Played this album a zillion times in high school
+Kat “Zepluv” Hamilton
Wrong era, Right ear!!!
JohninFunk Thanks to my dear dad...
An slightly older guy I knew when I was 14 or so went to see GFR and said how intense and loud it was. We loved Grand Funk back then.
I built the West boxes the boys are playing through in this video. Dave West rest in peace brother.
facebook.com/john.infunk.7/
Those amps have a very unique sound. Loud & clean with a really sweet crunch tone. Bigass 15" speakers. When Mark engaged the octave fuzz switch on his Messenger it was pure chaos. Power Trio unlike any other
I was is a band in Lansing that bought their PA right after they were signed. West cabs were no joke !!!
Farner was just a totally free spirit music feeler, pure emotional journey in his stage performance.
Mi banda favorita de todos los tiempos. Viva GRAND FUNK!!!
Hell yeah, grew up listening to this was my first rock and roll band I played on my 8 track every day!
Grand Funk played the Pirates World twice: January 16&17 1970 and March 19&20 1971.
Bloodrock opened the 1971 show.
Keep Funkin' Jon!
As an old Grand Funk Railroad fan, I'm completely blown away..Thank you!!
Love how guitar cord coming straight outta Mel's bass head right into his bass , no sound effects needed here crank it up and play ur ass off !!! Love it 😎
I've read that he changed the pickups on his bass, and it gave it that kinda fuzzy sound that sounds so good.
Excelente!!!! De los tiempos de mis hermanos mayores. Aquí en el Perú lo grabaron los Datsuns de Huancayo con la voz de Claudio Huanca.
Wake up Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. These guys should be in, and it's a joke that they've been kept out.
The Hall Of Shame is a joke. Madonna is in (is she rock ? No. How could that happen ??!) , but not Grand Funk. Tells you all you need to know. Took Rush forever to get in.....
Well said should have been in Rock Hall of Fame long time ago.
Neither is MC5 or Ted Nugent or Mitch Ryder. Detroit acts.
I had no clue they were not in the hall of fame. WTF, was their hair to short, or to long ? This God Damned world is crazy.
Cannot get any better than Mark, Don and Mel
For those music fans out there that never knew how brilliant Grand Funk Railroad was, here is the proof.
IN A HEARTBEAT!
oh my Pirates World, I remember that - what great times !!!!!
Now that was a rare find.
Indeedy!
I was at the show at Pirate's World. Apparently there was a riot outside when they ran out of tickets. Those of us inside had no idea until the show was over. Bloodrock opened for them. Unforgettable concert. Saw them about a year earlier and twice more in the coming years. Awesome rock performances.
WHAT A FUCKING BAND!!!!!......i wanna see any of these new "so-called-bands" of nowadays do what they did in those days!!!!!!
Thank you for posting this rare, 1970 footage of The Grand Funk Railroad.. It made my day to "discover" it!
Éste video es un TESORO!!!!
Muchas gracias!!!!
I'm a drummer and I been playing Grand funk since 71 and I'll BE playing Grand funk till I die and beyond
They beat the hell out of bands like red hot chili peppers and chevelle
Any day of any week.
So true.
damn right!!!!
Just look at all The Hall Of Famers Grand Funk Railroad did shows with. That there will tell you how good they are!
Raw and incredibly power driven.
Im a black man and i know real music played from the heart. This is iconic at say the least. Love it.
Speak yo mind brothea
Your black? Really? Do tell how that matters so much you have to tell everyone. I am white. And?...
@@andrewthompson7707 Because I am black some would be led to believe that I would not "hear" or "feel" this kind of music. Oh but how wrong they are. Good music from the heart transcends, one just has to feel it. But to answer your question race, culture and environment can guide a person into the type of music they are able to hear and feel.
