What I don't understand is why they aren't in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. These guys were in their hey day bigger than Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath.

Being from Detroit, saw these guys everytime came around. Always a party and a half! But I think Cream still the best trio hands down. But GFR nearer and dearer to my heart!
Um, you must've missed it, 'cuz they ARE in the R&R Hall Of Fame, & their original instruments have also been there for quite some time, (and still are, according to Mark), including Mark's "Messenger" hollow-body aluminum guitar, (which, if you took the neck off the body, you'd find that it was a calibrated tuning fork!), which he had to "cram full of" upholstery foam, & then taped over the "F-holes", to keep it from excessive feed-back... I THINK even Mr. Wests' original "Oh, so THAT'S what I hooked up backward!" amplifiers are there, too. (Being both a musician & an Electronics Design Engineer, I know there are only a couple of things on an audio power-amplifier tube that CAN be "backward", without the tube blowing itself out, so I REALLY want to know WHICH wires he'd reversed; between that "unique" guitar & the WEST amplifier's "happy mistake", is the reason that their original equipment sounded like it did. I have the same "vintage" William F. Ludwig, Chicago, Ill." drums that Donnie had started out with, but I LIKE mine, so I keep them, & once I finally have a child, after my wife gets back here from China, I'll have someone to "bequeath" the set to, since they're already worth a small fortune.) (If I knew which wires the West amps had reversed, I'd start building them, since Mark had spoken with Bill?, or is it Dave?, West about resuming production of those crazy amplifiers.) IMHO, Mark Farner was, IS, & always WILL be "GFR", at least to me. Mel Schacher was "getting better with touring & practice", but I've been a trained percussionist since I was only 9 yrs young, & by age 12, I "went pro", so I'm more than "qualified" to say, that in MANY pro drummers' opinions, "Drummers like Donnie Brewer were, and still are, a dime a dozen". If Donnie hadn't cooked up what he THOUGHT would get both Mel & him more money, by "firing" Mark, the REAL "GFR" would still be playing TODAY, & there'd be a LOT more tunes like the old ones. Mark never stopped, & STILL goes out to tour EVERY YEAR, & that's the way to do it. (IMO, Terry Knight was a total putz, & if he'd sued them today, he'd have lost, but back then, things were different.) I listened to "The Red Album", titled simply "Grand Funk", to teach myself both electric bass + electric guitar, which helped beyond measure, when I "went Pro" on "all things percussion" at age twelve.) I have the first "Live Album" in an Appraiser's Sleeve, WITH the original POSTER in it, & I only played the "reprints" when my tapes got worn out. When "audio CDs" started replacing most (but NOT all vinyl recordings), I found all but 1 album on CD; it took 2-1/2 months for the people at "CD Now" to FIND that ONE Live Album, (someone had bought the rights to it, & it ended up being re-mastered onto CD in Germany with a British label-name, after going through some other hands in other countries, but they WERE smart enough to have left the ORIGINAL artwork on it.) I still listen to "Closer To Home/I'm Your Captain", which belongs strictly to Mark Farner, since he woke up one morning at around 2:30am, grabbed a pencil & paper, & wrote the lyrics, then went back to sleep; the next morning, he strummed the opening chords to it, thought "Hey, I think that'd go great with those words I wrote don last night, & got his notes & sang it while he played it. When the other guys got to "The Swamp", he played it for them, & the first comment was "Hey, Man, I think you've got a real hit!", & he most certainly did. I also still listen to the REAL Mark Farner singing & playing it, with the band called "En'rGy", & he can STILL hit every note, every time. A true professional.
@ Phoenix Night Owl I don’t necessarily disagree with any of your points, but though they all had talent, none of these boys were virtuoso musicians. Mark was a true rock star. He BROUGHT >IT< like no one before or sense. Brewer was not a great drummer, but he was a great pocket keeping drummer, and Mel was in lock step with him. This song is a perfect example. They remind me of another iconic American rock and roll rhythm section; Doug Clifford and Stu Cook of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Listen to anything live with the Fogerty brothers. Not virtuosos, but killer pocket player that made the band what it is.
Sin dudas una de las bandas mas espectaculares que dío la historia del Rock'roll a nivel mundial y que lamentablemente,no alcanzó la repercusión que merecían ¡LOAS a GRAND FUNK RAILROAD!
How many of those hall of fame bands can say they sold out Shae Stadium in a matter of hours... even the Beatles couldn't do it. They also got kicked off a Led Zeppelin tour because they were showing them up. That is hall of fame.
Ésto es música. Tengo 65 años y los oía en 1969 en Secundaria en CDMX. Y si, esto es música y no la de los jotitos raperos. 50 Años y se sigue escuchando GFR. Grácias por compartir.
One of the best live performances I've ever seen and heard, worthy of being alongside the Beatles, The Who, Jimi Hendrix and others from a select group. The sound of the Grand Funk Railroad was made to the exact measure! The band is great, either in the studio or live!

@@pwgasson, unfortunately I have to agree with you. Rock is not what it once was, and it's a damned shame. With the auto tune bs singers use these days and the less than kick ass music being produced in mass these days, we have fallen a long way from what it use to be. Long live GFR! Rock on brothers!!
Yeah, I don't recall the mid 70's to the early 90's but, I do remember some of the better concerts I attended. This BS, BTO, GFR show would have been flippin' awesome.

These guys always put on a good show! In 1975 they rushed the doors here at the civic in Albuq. The police had a riot on their hands, i will never forget! Bad ass man!
The whole Rust Belt R&R ethos of the period embodied in pretty much one tune. From The Outsiders through The James Gang to Barkin' Bob and Michael Stanley.
+Harold Mackie HI Harold, I've seen it lots of times since. Mark was my inspiration to learn piano/organ etc. I used to do it all the time in the bands I played in during my twenties.
+Evan Thompson You look a little like someone ive seen before are you a producer ,or something in that line of business.. A weird thing is you dont have to answer that. ...
I think his ankle must be spring-loaded. Amazing speed and power combined with great touch and timing. One of the more underrated rock drummers of the day.
My whole body is still shaken and fingers are sore from beating on my desk. This is hot, raw talent at it's best in the 70's. Wish I had been old enough to see them live. Thanks again GFR.
This was one the best kick ass rockin' stage bands that I've ever seen and I have seen MANY. They should have been in the Rock Hall of Fame LONG ago.......they sold out Yankee Stadium faster than the Beatles.
Love this group back in the late 60's and early 70's. They could rock the house big time. I still have my "E Pluribus Enum" album that looks like a large silver dollar. Will never, ever get rid of it. The only rock group I know if in the history of rock that has a round album that jams. Rock the house!
deutschlan You are correct... the keyboard player (Craig Frost) was added to the band in 1972. However, in "tiberio135's" defense... when this song was first penned and recorded... Grand Funk Railroad was a three man band (69-71) and helped coin the phrase "Power Trio" in rock folklore.
I remember when the brick walls mortar was falling out the wall on my head somewhere in the 70's at the Warehouse in New Orleans!! That was a COOL memory!!!
If someone could bottle the sheer energy of this one performance and put it in an energy drink, they would become a billionaire. This is one potent performance!!!

I saw them live in NYC around 73. Freddie King was the warm-up band (whom no one really appreciated) D. Brewer pulled off a fabulous drum solo. Better than Bonham (and I've seen Zepplin numerous times.)
I believe Freddie King is in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. If you look up the people who are in that place that GFR did a show with. Another thing when they changed their sound a lot of people did not like that but they was more popular when they did it. Rolling Stone Magazine will never admit that they blew it with GFR.
Saw em in 73 I remember the firecrackers and the train! It was my first concert and I didn't know what to expect....wow. Something I'll never forget. Old school ROCK!
THIS IS ROCK N ROLL,YOU'VE FOUND IT,FIND DON AN MEL'S ADDRESSES AND WRITE THEM IT IS TIME FOR THE REUNION AND LET THE HEALING BEGIN,THIS BAND IS PURE MAGIC,MARK IS STILL PRIMED
+fredthejunkman He teaches now, holding master classes. Seeing him here reminds me that he was so often underrated. Impressively solid time keeping and nice fills.
+Phil Black He certainly seems to have, um, messed over Mr. Farner. I don't know how you tour as GFR without Mark Farner, the primary voice of Grand Funk, or how you justify what they've done to Mark personally. Two sides to a story, but don't know how you make Brewer's side look good given what's in the public domain. Sort of like what the other CCR guys did to John Fogerty, the voice, composer, and lead guitar for Creedence.
+Gary B He screwed Farner over. Farner can not use the name Grand Funk. Brewer did some legal wrangling that cut out Farner. Seeing how the majority of the songs were written by Farner something is wrong with this picture. Have seen both Farner and Funk in concert. Wouldn't pay to see Funk ever again, but go once a week to a Farner show if I could. From what I hear Mel didn't have anything to do with the mess. It's all Donnie.
+icetech6 It had nothing to do with Farner not wanting to tour. Farner tours with his own band and puts on a better show than the current Grand Funk. When I saw Funk I wanted my money back. The show I saw had Bruce Kulick formerly in Kiss playing guitar. I have a friend who is the most die hard Grand Funk you will ever find. He says he will not go to a Grand Funk concert without Farner ever again.
I,very been a fan since 72! I'm 63 now! The 70,s was the best decade for music, rock, blues soul, and jazz
Hmmm not

IMHO, Mark Farner was, IS, & always WILL be "GFR", at least to me.
(IMO, Terry Knight was a total putz, & if he'd sued them today, he'd have lost, but back then, things were different.)
I listened to "The Red Album", titled simply "Grand Funk", to teach myself both electric bass + electric guitar, which helped beyond measure, when I "went Pro" on "all things percussion" at age twelve.)
I have the first "Live Album" in an Appraiser's Sleeve, WITH the original POSTER in it, & I only played the "reprints" when my tapes got worn out. When "audio CDs" started replacing most (but NOT all vinyl recordings), I found all but 1 album on CD; it took 2-1/2 months for the people at "CD Now" to FIND that ONE Live Album, (someone had bought the rights to it, & it ended up being re-mastered onto CD in Germany with a British label-name, after going through some other hands in other countries, but they WERE smart enough to have left the ORIGINAL artwork on it.)
I still listen to "Closer To Home/I'm Your Captain", which belongs strictly to Mark Farner, since he woke up one morning at around 2:30am, grabbed a pencil & paper, & wrote the lyrics, then went back to sleep; the next morning, he strummed the opening chords to it, thought "Hey, I think that'd go great with those words I wrote don last night, & got his notes & sang it while he played it.
@ Phoenix Night Owl
I don’t necessarily disagree with any of your points, but though they all had talent, none of these boys were virtuoso musicians.
Keith shannon: you're a moron
Good ole rock & roll from Detroit in the late 60s -70s. Detroit produced so many talented and diverse musicians and music.
Hate to be a Negative Nancy and correct, haha. But! My favorite band, EVER!!! They were from Flintmmm
Sin dudas una de las bandas mas espectaculares que dío la historia del Rock'roll a nivel mundial y que lamentablemente,no alcanzó la repercusión que merecían ¡LOAS a GRAND FUNK RAILROAD!
One of the greatest bands ever
And not in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame yet? That is so freaking crazy!!!
How many of those hall of fame bands can say they sold out Shae Stadium in a matter of hours... even the Beatles couldn't do it. They also got kicked off a Led Zeppelin tour because they were showing them up. That is hall of fame.
And Axel Rose is??!!! WRONG DANG answer!!!!
That is just wrong. GFR defines rock.
ONE OF AMERICA’S GREATEST GIFTS TO ROCK AND ROLL!!!
The best band ever,,,,my fav....sounds just like records....not fake like most....loved them
just 3 kids from Flint playing Rock-n-roll. Farner still says that to this day...and a great guy off stage.
Totally badass. Man, can't find this kind of power onstage anywhere today.
There was no Funk without Farner!Soul of the band.
Saludos.
One of the best live performances I've ever seen and heard, worthy of being alongside the Beatles, The Who, Jimi Hendrix and others from a select group. The sound of the Grand Funk Railroad was made to the exact measure! The band is great, either in the studio or live!
What a rockin’ band! Just pure raw energy!
@SteinRobert your comment made me feel great.i'm 56 this was my heyday 68-72 high school.hi norway usa here.takr care.love to read the comments from young people diggin this classic rock.thanks young ones! i feel so good! had a stroke recently and youtube has helped me relive my youth watching these videos!
Oh my God, I just found this jewel, and it brought back memories of when I went to high school!
Holy Heaven ! Another song that if released today would shoot straight to the top of the charts. Timeless rock and roll !🎸🎵🔊🎶🎛🎹🎼🎤
daaam, you're right bro...
I don't think so. People are so weened on today's slop, they wouldn't know a GREAT song if they heard it. What a shame.
Ladies and gentlemen, a true American rock...
The energy Farner and Brewer had is astounding. Actually, now it kind of wears me out just watching, LOL.
😆 🤣
There's not a better song to begin a show. I was not around for the 70's, but still love the music. Thanks dad! :)
💘 theseguysigethimg hjustlistening2them

Each member put out 100% and you could tell it!! Rock On Grand Funk Railroad!!!👍🇺🇲
Sure were great back in the days, just miss this good ole music....
great song,i was only 16-in this time ,now 61,a fan from Hungary
I'm a Hungarian fan from America. 59
Early 80's. Old Philadelphia Civic Center. Bob Seger, BTO and GFR closing. Best concert I can remember. Thanks for the clip!
I don't remember Grand Funk touring in the 80s ? was that with Dennis Belanger on bass ?
It could have been the late 70's. Bob Seger just had his first hit and was opening act.
Yeah, I don't recall the mid 70's to the early 90's but, I do remember some of the better concerts I attended. This BS, BTO, GFR show would have been flippin' awesome.
One of the greatest bands, ever! It is hard to believe that they had so many hits, great musicians, Dominated rock in the 70s and they are not in the damn Rock and Roll hall of Fame. It's an embarrassment
These guys aren't in the R&R Hall of Fame but Guns & Roses are? Please.
They should be in there but there is a lot more questionable choices than Guns n roses.
@@4z94 agree, like Tupac
Perfection!
G n R were good for a handful of years, but then the drugs and alcohol took over...🙄👎
"but Guns n Roses are?" Both bands rock hard, man
brings back great memories seen them in Detroit at the Eastown theater 1970 change my life.
+Carlos Garza Up on Harper---they tore it down last year or so i'm told---fucking scrappers going in there and fucking it all up--for awhile they wanted to fix it and bring in music-just an awesome old theatre that the scrappers fucked up
Shinin On tour, Providence Rhode Island. 1973. Wet Willie band opened. My very first concert..EVER!!
Will always remember it!!
Quite the first concert!
Talent. Charisma. Discipline. Pipes. Fingers. Stamina. Farner.
AMEN! FARNER!
Wow......if this doesn't get you out of your seat, nothing will! One of the best bands live, thank you Grand Funk!!
GFR gave us all the hope that our own garage band could make it in the music world. These guys will forever be underated. Fuck the quote unquote Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Those guys wouldn't know rock if it shit on them.
Fantastic live rockin' version full of pure energy !!!!
Farner's footwork is impressive, not to mention Brewer's on the bass drum.
+Evan Thompson the man plays keyboard and guitar,I never seen that b4 or since
+Harold Mackie HI Harold, I've seen it lots of times since. Mark was my inspiration to learn piano/organ etc. I used to do it all the time in the bands
I played in during my twenties.
+Evan Thompson You look a little like someone ive seen before are you a producer ,or something in that line of business.. A weird thing is you dont have to answer that. ...
Donnie is playing that boogie with one pedal and one amazing right foot...
I think his ankle must be spring-loaded. Amazing speed and power combined with great touch and timing. One of the more underrated rock drummers of the day.
This never get old. My all time fav band.
he plays the guitar, the keyboard, vocals AND no shirt - - - - God I love this video!
this is what music is supposed to sound like
tacosandpussy i agree to that up beat and groovy is what i think of this kind of music Yeah!
tacosandpussy ..Amen.!!
¡Qué buena época cuando el rock se basaba en la batería!
How could anyone not say Grand Funk is not one of the greatest bands ever! But they werent respected! They kicked ass in the early 70's!
Grand Funk Railroad is timesless ! Just love myself some Grand Funk .
These Gus are awesome! Brings back memories.
I could watch this a 1000 times an never tire of it...
dang. forgot how good those guys were. I was doin so much acid in those days couldn't really appreciate the quality of the band.
Love this group back in the late 60's and early 70's. They could rock the house big time. I still have my "E Pluribus Enum" album that looks like a large silver dollar. Will never, ever get rid of it. The only rock group I know if in the history of rock that has a round album that jams. Rock the house!
Classic showmen , energy was off the charts ! Wow
BEST 3 man band EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR !!!
great band man, but the best threesome is that little ol band from tejas.
There really is four here .But that cool man...
deutschlan You are correct... the keyboard player (Craig Frost) was added to the band in 1972. However, in "tiberio135's" defense... when this song was first penned and recorded... Grand Funk Railroad was a three man band (69-71) and helped coin the phrase "Power Trio" in rock folklore.
deutschlan Mark , Don, Mel Thats three .
+tacosandpussy You MUST be speaking on Donald and Walter. :) (Steely Dan still plays on my MP3 player whenever I have chance to listen.)
La mejor canción de este gran grupo Grand Funk!!!
Love Grand Funk Railroad, thanks for this video and past memories!!
These are the guys that first got me listening to rock and roll when I was a kid I got to see them 20 years ago so great
I remember when the brick walls mortar was falling out the wall on my head somewhere in the 70's at the Warehouse in New Orleans!! That was a COOL memory!!!
If someone could bottle the sheer energy of this one performance and put it in an energy drink, they would become a billionaire. This is one potent performance!!!
Delicious raw talent with the music that still ROCKS in 2021!! Love from Canada - Grand Funk Railroad and Mark Farner - THANK YOU!!
i'm 56 had stroke recently and i'm in bad shape healthwise.music like this has cheered me up this was my heyday high school 68-72 linwood nj thanks for the video.i'm diggin grand funk, rare earth, uriah heep, etc!
I saw them live in NYC around 73. Freddie King was the warm-up band (whom no one really appreciated) D. Brewer pulled off a fabulous drum solo. Better than Bonham (and I've seen Zepplin numerous times.)
CEF....Cool man 😎
Sad about Freddie. Unfortunately those guys get lost in the shuffle. But in a appreciative world they wouldnt
I believe Freddie King is in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. If you look up the people who are in that place that GFR did a show with. Another thing when they changed their sound a lot of people did not like that but they was more popular when they did it. Rolling Stone Magazine will never admit that they blew it with GFR.
the organ break just kills. WOW
Oppie Oppenheimer I get goosebumps. Awesome.
Saw em in 73 I remember the firecrackers and the train! It was my first concert and I didn't know what to expect....wow. Something I'll never forget. Old school ROCK!
i saw them at NY MSG in 72. I was 12. my mother let my 15 year old brother take me. How time have changed. But have been a fan ever since
THIS IS ROCK N ROLL,YOU'VE FOUND IT,FIND DON AN MEL'S ADDRESSES AND WRITE THEM IT IS TIME FOR THE REUNION AND LET THE HEALING BEGIN,THIS BAND IS PURE MAGIC,MARK IS STILL PRIMED
strattuner , Come on men bring it !!!!
Brewer is the only guy who could get away with wearing a pink, ruffled-sleeve, bared-midriff blouse in public. Just sayin'.....what a drummer he is!
+Phil Black how do you know? maybe then, but now?
