I just opened a Wilderness Trail Family Reserve Cask Wheated store pick; ~115p and it absolutely blew me away. I've had most of the WT lineup, minus the htf higher age statement products (7yr/8yr) and just couldnt believe how good it was. I cant find much info on it but it has to be at least a 7yr. I immediately went and got a backup. Im really looking forward to what these guys put out in the future. Cheers.
Wilderness Trail is doing some great things. I have a couple as well including the wheater and found it to be complex and delicious. Really opened up about a week after uncorking for me. For this review I think that's sometimes the breaks for a brand when you're putting a SiB against standard consistent production runs.
I love wilderness trail as well they really shine in the cask strength picks that’s what should have been in the lineup some of the cask strength’s are lower proof
I’ve only tried Wilderness Trail and Maker’s Mark standard line up plus some of the experimental barrels - not the 101. Agree n Wilderness Trail but it’s got its place for easy weeknights for me. Wilderness Trail seems to often have pronounced grain forward flavors. Thinking of their ryes in particular. Maker’s was easy to ID when the musty character was mentioned. All Maker’s that I’ve tried has at least some of that musty “frunk” in the nose which also rolls into the palate - not something I prefer. Weller anything is allocated and heavily marked up around my area. Full Proof runs around $200-$250 if it’s on a shelf. Special Reserve is around $70-$100. Don’t remember the Antique 107 price. Not paying those FOMO prices so… Keeping an eye out for that Bardstown wheater. I’ve seen it posted by a local shop, in their “Coming Soon” page. Almost all Bardstown Discovery series have been great as has been most of their collaborations. Been very luke warm on their Fusion series - 4-6? But hoping as their own stocks age more that this will show in future Fusion expressions. Someone above mentioned Old Elk double wheater - I second that. 107 proof, it has some classic wheater character but also has a tempered assertiveness and great mouthfeel. Surprisingly showed up at a local Costco for~$89.
Of those four, I've only had the Weller Antique 107... but I've been thinking about the Wilderness Trail recently (either that one or the black label). Curious to see how it rates here.... Haha! I'll pass on Widerness Trail; The Wood Finishing series, as well as the 46, are my favorite Maker's; I will buy the Weller Antique again (planned to, anyway), and I will need to check out the Bardstown now! Thank you!
I would love to get my hand on some more Bardstown stuff, as per usual not in PA and have to take the trip to Delaware which isnt bad. Next time im down there im going to try to grab a bottle of this now! Cheers.
I agree somewhat with Mr. Cheung except I would demand a rematch that includes my favorite daily bourbon, the regular Old Elk Wheated Bourbon (not the Wheated Whiskey). Old Elk Wheated Bourbon is a delicious sleeper that deserves more publicity. It has the chops, being made by former MGP master distiller, Greg Metz. Give it a try. You won’t regret it. Also I love what they are doing at Wilderness Trail. What a back story.
I'd love to see which was which in the notes or something.. When you start I would like to know which one you are talking about to follow along easier... By the time you tell which was which I have to go back and listen to the notes again.. Anyway, thanks for another great video
I new exactly which ones were which from your tasting notes. I feel the same way about the OWA and the Bardstown. They are both fantastic, but different and IMO equally as good as each other. I have been killing my Bardstown and am already having trouble finding a backup.
Great video Jason I’ll have to find the bardstown but I’ll say you should have done cask strength wilderness trail wheater since they are usually still low proof I have a 105 proof one and it’s much better than 100 proof versions also should have went makers cask they are usually only 109 to 110 would be curious if that changed up the results
I like the special reserve more than antique. But, I love the BBC black label wheated. I tried the BBC rye barrel strength in October 2022 at BBC, IT WAS AMAZING!!! Can’t wait to buy all of them!
Going to give some free advice, don't abbreviate Bardstown bourbon company as BBC. Especially not in a search engine. Just type, "Bardstown" Will definitely save you some embarrassment. "Oh man, I had some BBC last night, and it was FANTASTIC"
Question for you Jason - I had a fantastic 34y single grain from Strathclyde a few months ago and believe one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much was the wheat content (plus the age...)? I am looking for a similar taste profile in a wheat forward bourbon and don't know if this is realistic, and if you have any suggestions? I really liked the buttery slightly biscuit/savory palate and was curious if you could point me in the right direction? Cheers!
So isn't it a little weird that the new all in-house made whiskies from Bardstown are all identical mash bills to commonly sourced distillate? MGP low rye, MGP high rye, MGP rye, and Heaven Hill wheated. Makes you wonder if they're pulling a Bowman and redistilling sourced distillate.
I knew the young tasting wheat forward one was Wilderness Trail. Every bottle I've ever tried from Wilderness Trail has tasted young and grainy. I've tried several. For me, it's really expensive whisky that just doesn't cut it. I will say that they have a unique profile that you don't get with a lot of other whisky....it's just that I don't find it enjoyable. Because it's very grain forward, it always tastes young to me. It's one that you may want to try just to see if you like their profile because, like I said, it is unique. I'd be interested to know what kind of char they use on their barrels. If I had to guess, I'd say it's not a heavy char, but I could be wrong.
Back in December of 2022 someone posted a UA-cam comment that "Wilderness Trail was good at 6 years, they’re stuff now is all 4 years to keep up with demand and suffers significantly."
@Be There Again Productions I was not aware everything they did was 4 years old but it makes sense. I tried a bottle when they first came out in Kentucky in 2018(I think). It almost tasted like moonshine to me. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good. I'd definitely age it longer or change the barrel char. But I guess they don't need my advice. If they're putting out younger whiskey because they can't keep up with demand, I guess they're doing quite well. Apparently, a lot of people really like it. It wouldn't be the first time my taste clashes with a popular product. I don't care a lot for a lot of the 4 Roses releases. They have a floral note in them that I don't like. Everyone else seems to love it. I've been drinking Bourbon and Scotch for almost 25 years. I live in Kentucky and have almost tried them all. I guess you can't like every distillery's products.
If only the weller 107 was available more locally and much much closer to msrp. I first tried it on my birthday in 2022 and genuinely loved it. Problem is, it's almost unavailable and always way overpriced.
Totally agree with that statement. I've been on 2 tours at Bardstown where you sample straight from the barrel, and both times they were amazing. On the first tour, they said the barrels were only 3 years old.....it would have been difficult to make the choice not to dump those barrels right then! Very rich.
Not surprised with the MM, it's less than meh for me. Was surprised on the WT, you've picked some awesome barrels for us from them. I was routing for BT tho. Just for doin their own juice now. Cheers !!!
I would like to see Maker's Mark 46 Cask Strength against the Weller Antique 107. I think that iteration of Maker's Mark would better acquit itself. Enjoyed the video, however, nice lineup. Cheers.
Ha, as I was watching you describe “very wheat forward” I actually thought to myself that was the Wilderness Trail. I have a bottle myself and half to admit that I’m not a huge fan myself. I think it’s a bit overrated and don’t get why it’s so expensive. Imo regular Larceny slaps it around and it’s basically half the price.
Exactly what I guessed on your IG, I haven't had 3 of these, but I had a feeling lol I feel like makers is terrible, I haven't been impressed with them.
Thank your for another nice review. I'm convinced that our pallets align, but this one is just not relevant to 90% of the bourbon drinker in the US! It is so Frustrating that NOTHING from Weller OR Bardstown can be had in St. Louis! SCREW them BOTH!!! I will keep spending my bourbon funds on (your favorites too) best bang for the buck & ALWAYS AVAILABLE Wild Turkey 101 & Russell's Reserve 10yr Bourbon with an occasional sip on "also radially available" Maker's Mark Cask Strength. Going forward, Please ignore Wellers until they figure out how to supply the masses! (FYI, I am a long time fan of Antique 107 and do own a small "unopened" stash w/ no plans to tap!) Please start ignoring the unobtanium bottles and review the ones that normal folks can acquire. Rant Over :) !!
Origin by a large margin. OWA is just so overrated. Wilderness trail is absolutely solid. It does everything well but nothing great. Makers for me is a drain pour. I don’t like anything they do. Your results and taste may vary. Skol
Come for the throwdown, stay for watching Jason drink in agony. Old Elk Double Wheat is another strong Wheater contender.
Great idea for a throwdown! Like the mash bill throw down idea
Love the "Did You know" facts. Thank you for including those.
Fantastic blind. As a big fan of the Antique, this was good to see to have an alternative. Cheers & Go birds 🦅
I picked up the Bardstown BiB last week. I couldn’t agree more with your picks. Huge Weller 107 fan but that Origin is so tasty !
Just got this bardstown bottle yesterday and cracked it immediately. Amazing.
That Bardstown is fantastic!
And it's readily available at the $50 price point. 👍😳👍
Love the opening music!🤘
I'm a big fan of makers mark cask strength
Great review! I love the Woodford Wheat myself.
That's a favorite of mine as well. Hard to beat for $30.
Maker's Mark cask strength is such an underrated whisky. So good.

Been looking forward to this Bardstown release for awhile and I love me some 107. Can’t wait to do this head-to-head myself. Great vid Jason, cheers!
Buffalo Trace Kosher wheat is on point.
Amazing results. Great video.
Nice head to head! Weller here is 200.00 plus! Looking forward to the new Bardstown series!
Ha I called it! Bardstown for the win! You told me it was good and my bottle is awesome! Great blind!
I knew it. That Disco is very, very good.
I knew BBC would win. Glad I made a recommendation for this.
Having the wheater at BBC I was blown away how good it was.
Funny. I actually went out this morning looking for both Bardstown expressions. I came up empty on the wheater. FML.
Great info, thanks Jason!
I got a bottle of bardstown the prisoner today i love it got it for 140
Good double-double!
Good stuff. I grabbed an origin wheater a few weeks ago..need to crack it. Cheers!!

Very happy with these results. We rarely get OWA in Illinois, but Bardstown (owned by the Pritzker family) is always available out here
So glad to see this. Got to taste origin series around 5 years straight from the barrel and man it was good.
Four of my favorites! Stellar episode!
I have the Wilderness Trail BIB and agree that it has great finish. I found and bought the Bardstown Origin BIB for $49.99 and cannot wait to try it!
I need to try that winner, sounds delicious!
Not surprised. Great quad bass!
Great blind! Real enjoyed the bbc, just got the bbc high rye- opening this week, great to have these value (under $50) options 👍
Well, I just happen to have a bottle of each, so I'll have to give it a try tomorrow.
Bardstown and distilling some great bourbon! Steve McNally is on fire

Admittedly. EXCELLENT TITLE and CONTENT. How about a"10-YEAR BOURBON BOUT!" for the undisputed 10-year Champ. :)
hell of a throw down gonna have to try it. I have all 4
I would love to get my hand on some more Bardstown stuff, as per usual not in PA and have to take the trip to Delaware which isnt bad. Next time im down there im going to try to grab a bottle of this now! Cheers.

Need to pick up one of those Bardstown. Then again, I'm a fan of their Disco series already.
Based on your tasting comments, I picked your rankings exactly. Great review on your part. Kudos.
I'd love to see which was which in the notes or something.. When you start I would like to know which one you are talking about to follow along easier... By the time you tell which was which I have to go back and listen to the notes again.. Anyway, thanks for another great video
Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey is a good contender as well

Headed to the store to get some Bardstown. Can’t wait for the Green River wheater.
Called it. Their wheater is really good. Would love to have a cask strength taste or sib of it! Great review

Nice lineup Jason, thank you. I recently skipped over that Bardstown Origin, going back...Cheers my Man .
I liked both released Origin bottles. For the price and availability? Great.
Cheers J - great content as always
Man I hope that wheated Bardstown BiB becomes more wildly available. Can’t find it NOWHERE and I LOVE the 96 proof high eye origin.
Double double bass!
Crazy how tastes can very.. Bardstown for me is smoke, oak with a strong finish.
I see a buzzards roost on the barrel Jason, you need to rip into that, very good cask strength bourbon.
Very interesting results. Shame bardstown still isnt in my state
Awesome, I’m going looking……
I like the special reserve more than antique. But, I love the BBC black label wheated. I tried the BBC rye barrel strength in October 2022 at BBC, IT WAS AMAZING!!! Can’t wait to buy all of them!

You should taste the Bardstown at cask strength. Very delicious, and I'm not a big wheater guy
Need a double oaked blind with the 2xo and starlight. Hell might as well throw in sagamore to. Looking forward to a double oaked bloodbath lol

Good taste testing between some good wheaters. The only problem is that the only one available in Oklahoma is the Makers Mark.

Both of Bardstown's origin releases are amazing...hopefully they do some cask strength releases....those could be serious game changers if they do...
Cask strength Single Barrels on the Origin Bourbon (36% Rye). 6 years, $79.99 MSRP 🥃

Man…now it’s gonna sell out… I have a bottle from the distillery. It’s great, but I think I like the Rye mash bill origin series even more.
Double Double
What is the Old Forester 1915 on the table behind you?
1915 is a homemade blend some people like to make. It's equal parts OF 1910 and OF 1920
@@michelerivera6183 Thanks
Was that BBC a sample or a 200ml/375?
Jason, I see on the barrel Old Forester 1915. What is that ;-)
That's a blend I made and had some custom stickers sent. It looks great.
@@TheMashandDrum I was assuming ;-) Love to blend 1920 with 1910
Crazy thing is I love wheaters but had the Orgin black label v the white which is made with rye. White label was better.
Does anyone know where bardstown has distribution to? What states can't find any info.
Their website has all their info
@@TheMashandDrum I will check again. #boomer
Larceny BP C922 for the win

great quad bass. surprised by the makers being such a flop. Really hoping BBC does a triple 375 pack sooner rather than later.

Double Double Base?
Pritzker juice=bardstown
What does that mean, double bass?
Does any drummer actually use a quadruple bass? Neil Peart maybe? I know he plays some wild solos.
I've heard of a 3-legged drummer but never a 4-legged drummer 🤣
The Bardstown BIB is good, but it's not that good.
No MM 46 or cask strengths or Larceny anything.... :/
I think the peanut-butter-jar Larceny would stand out like a sore thumb.
Just bought WT and 101. Only because I couldn't find the new Bardstown. Your not helping my cause. I 2nd on the Old Elk wheated.
Gotta agree, that makers 101 was disappointing and underwhelming
For my palate, Weller Antique is awful. It tastes young, sharp and harsh! I don't like it
Interesting since it's the second oldest standard release, right after the 12 year.
@@robzilla69 Maybe it is the spice that I don't like or the rye in the whiskey. It is offensive to me, but I like all the other Weller expressions.
