- For more gear reviews and videos check out guitarworld.com In this video Slipknot's Mick Thompson talks about his signature amplifier, the KR7 from Rivera amplification.
I could listen to this dude all day long. His intelligence about his gear and tone and how he describes it all is something that I find so fascinating.
+JohnnyMrHattersmith im more a blues experimental kinda player, but slipknot both Mick and jim are some of my fav guitar players ever. They know their craft well
Easily one of the most underrated guitarists in metal. The man is fucking insane.
He is nothing compared for eg. Nergal, Peter, and King,
Demost is that a fact?
Yup
Demost Damn. And here I thought I was entitled to an opinion. Stupid me.
Yes, you're dumb xD
indeed. I saw him live and his attitude on stage is awesome, he played an entire song standind still looking at one point only moving his hand lol
I like how he said that you can sound great in your bedroom with a little practice amp and a boss metal zone. That is legit my setup right now!
I think weve all had that setup at 1 point or another lol. I know I did.
HorrorNightsFan13 My setup rn as well XD
+HorrorNightsFan13 More importantly, he noted that if you're gonna be playing in a band, to be heard in a mix, you need those Mid Frequencies, othewise you're not gonna be heard.
i have just a fender champion 110 and i can get killer tones out of it
You can, but it's very difficult. Crank the mids up, not the gain. Get half of your gain from the pedal and half from the amp. Straddle two pickups for your solo tone. If you do that, you could even play small gigs with that rig.
he describes guitar tone so simply and straight foward and then you listen to alot of other guitarists talk about their tone and they dont make any sense
Things you cannot see:
1. Air
2. Someone's thoughts
3. Ghosts
4. *Mick without he's glasses or mask*
His*. But your comment is still pretty funny
5. California without Marlon Brando's eyes
@@VideoGamePlay369 😂
Geez, you need some serious stamina to play riffs that fast and tight and not hit a bad note.
Some are difficult but i'm playing regulary for 1 year now and it's not that hard if you're doing it with your heart ^^
of course he got a lot
but it gets easier the more passion you have
MrBlackMysterious Passion doesn't stop you sounding like shit if you can't play it.
it's easier because you have the will to learn everything
MrBlackMysterious
Persistence is far more important, practice then taking a solid listen to your playing and listen for mistakes and focusing on those specific errors in your playing will do you far better...
I love how well spoken and balanced Jim and Mick are... they're awesome.
I'm a little taken aback at how articulate he is. Very cool discovery.
Damn he is a fucking robot on the riff`s. I think this goes to anyone who thinks he is a bad player.
nice picture
Lol U too
And he has got amazing solos !
Mick has to be the tightest thrash rhythm player out there
Dylan Edwards slipknot is not thrash. Slipknot is alternative nu metal
slipknot is slipknot
Indeed
He's also a solid lead player.
Pretty much agreed
Impressive how articulate he is in all aspects of playing dynamics and audio mixing and recording.
dude. hes such a bad ass. i nvr really realized how complex there shit wuz and how good of a guitarist he is.
I love how he's all chill in person and on stage he's a fucking headbanging, monster.lol
I have such a crush on Mick. I love that he can't stop playing his guitar!!!
I do too, Seven is just so badass. Love him so much.
That amp sounds great, so many options, awesome!
looks awesome sounds even better
He makes it look so easy and effortless
what a metal beast
Bad-ass player! Damn he is tight, love his style.
i love the markers he has on the top of the neck
i love how they spell his name right in the video but wrong in the title and description
Why is mick not on a 7 string, and why doesnt jim play bass? their numbers would be perfect!
+Burning Innocence umm why he dont play 7 ... well first of his strings are thick enought to handle low tuning ....
He once said 7-strings are just a trend
He's warmed up to sevens recently, but he said he won't record with one until they record something with that low of a tuning. He tunes his sixes to Drop B and drop A, so he probably won't use a seven until they drop to G or some shit like that.
+JohnnyMrHattersmith i play in drop A with a 7 string, thats like standerd for a 7
Noel Crowley Not sure why. It would make sense to me if he switched to sevens, but he wants to stick with sixes.
Awww his voice ♥
I love that I have to watch a commercial to be able to watch what is essence is a (amp) commercial. 3:51 makes it worth it though...
1:16. Vendetta. Such an awesome song, I wish they would play it live
Ripping it up on Vendetta is fun as hell.
dont' even like slipknot but this guy is really smart about electronics and music and Rivera amps are kick ass. funny his guitar and amps are the 7 model and their song is called Gematria... haha if any of you guys can figure out the relation to the number 7 and the word Gematria you win a cookie. good luck
it goes way back like 1785. gematria is hebrew or greek . used to put a numerical value on words? thats all i got. i looked it up and it was pretty interesting but confusing too. please elaborate more if you would.
Jews interpret the written work by mathematical means and seven is typically interpretted as good.
Oatmeal raisin with a side of sliced pork and non-cloven hoof.
Shiney JerkFace
Funny! my first metal band i formed was called Cloven Hoof.
jeffrey monroe I just googled the word "Gematria" and I found this:
"a Kabbalistic method of interpreting the Hebrew scriptures by computing the numerical value of words, based on the values of their constituent letters."
What I THINK that means is that every letter in the Hebrew alphabet has a numerical value directly related to it's place in the alphabet. For example in the English alphabet A is 1, B is 2. You just add those numbers up to get the Gematric value?
his day job before Slipknot took off was at a guitar shop and engineering at a recording studio.
there are a bunch of great guitar players in the world in all music types but mick is just a beast warrior when it comes to his sounds and is definately influencing other great bands to come
He has such a fascinating and unique style of playing.
You can sound legit with a big amp and a metal zone if you use it right. I run it straight from my guitar to the amps input and get an insanely killer tone out of my Marshall DSL 100. I cut the gain out completely on the pedal and turn the drive up and it tightens up the tone while still keeping all the bottom end
damn i could watch him play forever
@Mohamed636 That's his number in Slipknot but on the Slipknot website it explains it a little better.
fucking love that Gematria riff.
lol at 3:38 i thought it was sped up...
but the the sound comes in...
geez he's got fast trills
the song is called gematria from all hope is gone...SLIPKNOT
3:52 min
Absolutely awesome ❤️
That opening riff is 11th Hour by Lamb of God.
@spitfiremk2ify no, because this footage of the studio was on the dvd that was included with the album, and craig was censored in that dvd
Wow, what is the Song at the Beginning of the Clip?
its amazing !!
+Fritz Sailer Vendetta off All Hope Is Gone
@M0NsTer20010 Not sure what video you were watching, but he's definitely got long hair in this one. It's pulled back through most of it, but he's got long hair.
i buyed that white ibanez guitar on christmas , it took long to convince my dad :p
but it was worth it , playing on the same guitar as mick thomson :p
Dude knows his guitar + gear
i'm not really that much of a Slipknot fan... but Mick Thompson is a badass :D
sick riff at the beggining
Amazing riff work
thats why his arm and band number 7
the songs they showed was Vendetta one of their new song \m/
Hes got that whole Kerry King thing going, even the raiders cap, K.K. in the 90s Im sayin ofcoarse the shades inside also. KK never takes his off, same with Simmons. wish I had this rivera amp & cabnet.
Eq is what makes the Boss metal zone sweet as fuck. Those Rivera heads are sweeter than fuck though.
as much as i love slipknot(no joke)
i think guitar needs to do interview bands like cannibal corpse, morbid angel.
in my opinion, thats where the talent and influences are
eddie van halens big influence is trey azagthoth from morbid angel, that guy influenced him to dive bomb
so guitar world, please do reviews of good old fashion death metal bands
He is has the right jersey on!
I would love to try this amp.. Im not big into slipknot, the only good cd was vol. 3... But this amp sounds great.
Look at this man shred! Heavy heavy heavy heavy
Mick has beautiful hair
Without comparing him to anyone (because that's stupid), he's amazing.
i like his signature acoustic
This would be the one tube amp I could consider buying. Mick's ideal tone is just insanely close to what I hear in my head.
Gematria is truly a symphony of metal riffs and brutal trash technique.
he looks like a rider ,and he is a fucking great guitar player
@jantisoy It's the song Vendetta from the All Hope Is Gone album.
Slipknot inspired me! funny thing I never learned one of their songs lol and now I play bass lolz!
ive never seen that white guitar in any shops...damn.. i want it
The raiders cap explains all the anger in the music....
Wikipedia says it's rock/hardrock/metal, so I guess you're right!
The band members says it's actually hardrock, it's just like Motörhead!
I'm going to make my own Grindcore band and then i say it's actually MerseyBeat=D
seems like a really cool guy
that big building at the beginning is that his house or a studio
He looks like a mix of Silent Bob and Vinnie Paul lol Dude jams though!!
I haven't cut my toenails since 1986. They are now over 25" in length. They are very curly and knobbly. They are browny yellow. I never wash my socks. I have been wearing these dark green socks for eight months now. I sleep in them. They haven't been off my feet in all that time. I will stick a black olive on the end of each toenail. You can come to my house, remove my green socks and eat the black olives. Pull them from my toenails with your teeth.
@@falseteeth5621 I know I'm really late but. HOW IS THAT RELATED TO HIS COMMENT?
WTF
@Exmortus100 May be an optical trick with the black-white binding.
he looks even cooler playing the guitar without his mask
@414deathmetalist i can see what you mean. i think he needs a more thrash/death metal band to play in because it would show his true metal talent.
@MasterMetallicaCover You ever heard of them because all of there songs have Drop A. So out of all there songs there is a couple that do better than Psychosocial.
The Darkest Day of Man is a good one. There really is no point in arguing over bands anyway because both are great in there own way.
Not a fan of Slipknot... But I'm really liking the white Ibanez... If it had offset blocks instead of SEVEN I'd buy it instantly
@lolocska1995 if you're talking bout the beginning should be Vendetta ,the second one is Gematria(The Killing Name) all the way,
It would be cool if he maid a solo album with other people what do you think?
@idangle6 the song is vendetta :)
one day im gonna kick ass like mick thompson oneday
@Blackhawk5656 its Vendetta, from All Hope Is Gone -album
if u think that check out the devil wears prada theyre pretty heavy and the riffs definately arent boring
ZOMG I WISH I COULD BE THAT FREAKIN GOOD
all of the knobs on his head were at seven....he is number seven..
I WANT THAT AMP!!!!!
Mick is the best guitarist
Hmmm . From what he says, seems to be the Ultimate Guitar Head.. But for about three grand, I guess it should be .. I don't know. I bought a "Dimebag" Darrell/ KranK Amp-head years back and I like it.... But then again , Still nothing compares to my Hughes and Kettner, custom model (Alex Lifeson) TriAmp MKII ! !!!
yeah first time i see someone from slipknot playin gematria :D
metal will never die. and your opinion is yours to have about mick or slipknot. as long as there are pissed off people in this world metal will survive
loooks pretty sick actually!
You left out MFKR (Mate Feed Kill Repeat). Great album actually.
I'm not a Slipknot fan by any means, but they do have some catchy songs.
I tried this amp out. My local shop has a used one and I plugged into it with an Epi Les Paul. I think he's got the bottom end all out of whack. In metal, when I am chugging on the low E (tuned to C+) I expect the amp to move air, a sound that is more felt than heard. I could not get that to happen with this head. Oh, it was loud, but it was just loud to your ears, not to your chest. I don't like that. Perhaps it was just the guitar I was using, but it had a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge, so I don't think it was the guitar really. Anyways, it does sound great on the clean channel and with a Boss Metal Zone Pedal on the clean channel I got what I wanted, but I could not get it with just the amp. And for $3000 new ($2600 the one I played on) you would expect perfection all the way around.
That's the point of this amp though, Mick has specifically tailored this amp to be heard in a live mix. As explained in the video, the sound that you were trying to achieve with the head would get lost in a professional mix. In a live setting guitars occupy specific frequency ranges, that should avoid crossing over into bass or drum frequencies, the whole band sounds huge as a result. Guitar sounds that have too much low end tend get lost in the mix, because a half decent bass rig usually has a lot more power and clean headroom on tap than your typical guitar rig. As a result the bass player drowns you out.
Yea that scared the shit out of me! :D I've always thought Mick is the tallest. I think Jims is not standing very straight or then he just looks smaller than Mick.
4:05
faster than youtube can handle lol
Mick Thompson is so good it FUCKING pisses me off and quit playing haha
He looks like Steven Seagal but his skills are real!!
dam.. is that his home recording studio?
wow, i was completely wrong. I thought his amp would have been pink and had ponys and unicorns on it....
I want to have him and Mustaine as my guitar mentors. lol
Cause both of them are awesome. :D
All hail Mick Thompson!!!!!!!!
He kind of ressemble Dimebag to me.
Specially in the Damageplan days, when he was a bit more fatty.
R.I.P. Brother of Metal!
at least we get to know some what of his amp settings are......... 3:21
Used to like SlipKnoT dont anymore. Still a fan of MIck though hes bloody good!
It's from the All Hope Is Gone album....
